Sidewalk
g n fi r u s
Do you know that millions of young people go sidewalk surfing every day? Sidewalk surfing? Don’t you know what it is? Well, this is how it started many years ago.

In the 1950s, young people in California wanted to go surfing even when there were no waves. That is why many surfers tried to surf on the streets or on the sidewalks. They made their own skateboards from boxes or boards and put on wheels made of steel. They took the wheels from roller skates. The first skateboards were really difficult to handle.

Ten years later, skateboarding was very popular. But lots of young people left skateboarding because of all the accidents. Then in the 1970s, everything changed thanks to new soft wheels. The skateboards were much safer and of good quality, so people started trying out new tricks. T H E ‘O LLI E’ | T R IC K To do difficult tricks you must first learn how to do the ‘Ollie’. It is a basic trick that a guy called Alan Gelfand invented. This is how you do it:

•
Get your board moving.
•
Place your back foot on the tail and your front foot just behind the set of screws.
•
Push your back foot down on the tail and jump at the same time.
•
When you are in the air, slide your front foot up to the nose and level the board.
•
Land with your feet on the screws.
The sport became more and more popular and in 1975, they held a freestyle contest in California. The spectators saw things they didn’t believe were possible. You could watch programs about skateboarding on TV and the sport was now well known all over the world. But it was still dangerous. In Norway, for example, they banned skateboarding between 1978 and 1989. Remember, it all started in California with some homemade boards and they called it ‘sidewalk surfing’. Are you a sidewalk surfer too?

Ireland, the green island Green, green, everywhere green! Why do people think ‘green’ and Ireland go together? Of course, a lot of rain and mild winters make the island green and beautiful, but that is not the whole story.

People say that when Saint Patrick took Christianity to Ireland, more than 1,500 years ago, he filled the country with green fields of shamrocks and made all the snakes disappear. To this day, there are no snakes in Ireland!

St patrick’s Day in Chicago
Some experts say that there never were any. Ireland moved away from the mainland long before snakes came to Britain after the Ice Age, about 6,500 years ago. And the snakes couldn’t swim across the sea. Or maybe, the shamrock did the trick. What do you think? 5
10
The shamrock appears in many Irish logos. Every year, on 17 March, the Irish airline, Aer Lingus, flies fresh shamrocks all over the world, so that Irish people can wear it on their clothes. To wear the shamrock is a symbol of the Irish fight against Great Britain. (Ireland was part of Great Britain until 1921.) But why on 17 March? Because it is St. Patrick’s Day - the Irish National Holiday, and on that day every year, even the fountain of the White House in Washington D.C. and the Chicago River turn green. Can you guess the colour of the football shirts of the Irish national team? Yes, you’re right. They are green. What other colour could they be?

New bathrooms
Chapter

We live in an old semi-detached house just outside Brighton. Downstairs we have a kitchen, a dining room and a big bathroom. Upstairs there are four bedrooms and a small toilet. This is what happened in October last year.
I left for school at half past seven. Mum and Dad had already gone. As usual I put the key under the doormat and then rushed to school. On the other side of the hedge, Mr Hawkins next door said ‘Good morning’ to me.

When I came back at four, I found our bathtub on the lawn just inside the gate! A man in red overalls came out through the front door with the washbasin and put it down on the steps.

“What are you doing?” I said. The man looked at me. “It’s for your new bathroom. Didn’t your parents tell you?” “No, they didn’t.” “Maybe they want it to be a surprise. Did you see the new Jacuzzi? Look! Nice, huh?” “A Jacuzzi? Wow!” A few minutes later, our neighbour arrived in his car. The man in the overalls walked over to him. “Good afternoon, Gerald.” “Afternoon, John.” “I started today at lunch time. I hope it’s all right with you. You told me where you put the key, so it was easy to get inside. Your bathroom is already empty and the wall is gone.” Mr Hawkins looked stunned. “But, but … it’s the wrong house. I don’t believe it! It’s the wrong house! “You … you said number 16!” “I did not! Check your phone. What number did you write? 14? “Er … let me see. Er … Yeah, you’re right. It says 14. Oh no!” Well, what happened next is a very long story. But today, six months later, both our families have nice new bathrooms with Jacuzzis. And we have another thing in common: we don’t put our keys under the doormat any more.
