B The Early Days of the Horse The horse developed from a small, multi-toed animal into a modern powerful one-toed horse. It grew larger and adjusted to new conditions. Some died out, but others lived on. The horse remained fleet-footed and kept its almost 360degree vision. Przewalski’s horse is said to be the parent of all modern breeds and is found in zoos all over the world where it is bred without problem.

First the horse was hunted for meat. Later on the first members of the equine family were captured and tamed. Among these were the donkeys which were used for transportation. The horse was probably first harnessed about 5,000 years ago in China, and before long, took the place of the donkey. Although the horse had evolved in North America, it became extinct there, and did not return until Columbus brought it to Haiti on one of his ships in 1493. In Europe, Asia and North Africa there were still plenty of wild horses that could be caught and tamed. The horse now developed into a battle animal in war. Horses were also bred for special purposes. Man learned to ride them and made bridles to help control his steed. The saddle was invented, which allowed riders to stay on the horse for longer periods, and then the stirrups were introduced for stability reasons.

2 Horses and History Write a summary using the information about the horse in A and B. Make sure you get at least ten different pieces of information.

C The Horse’s Anatomy Now, let’s look at a horse and its body. To start with, the barrel is the main part of the body. The muzzle is the chin, mouth and nostrils of the horse’s face. The crest is the upper part of the neck where the mane grows. The chin groove is the part of the head behind the lower lip. The back is behind the withers, where you will find the saddle. A horse’s hindquarters is the large, muscular area of the hind legs. The cannon is between the knee and the fetlock (like an ankle) joint. Horses are measured in ‘hands’ (one hand equals 10.16 cm). The smallest horses are up to 8 hands and the largest more than 20 hands. Horses naturally live in herds, protecting each other, even taking turns to sleep. Because their stomachs are small they eat night and day. Horses’ teeth never stop growing. Their noses are very sensitive and can detect different types of grass or a dangerous animal. A horse can see things further away if it raises its neck.
