SAINT MICHAEL

and All Angels Episcopal Church

The Last Sunday after Pentecost: Christ the King November 23, 2025

11 AM TRADITIONAL Saint Michael Chapel

WELCOME

FROM THE RECTOR

The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata

We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.

We have multiple ways to give over the next month, including I Believe In Angels, a Christmas program that invites all of us to sponsor angels (children and seniors) at Jubilee, or through Heart of Giving, Christmas cards that provide tangible benefits for Mission and Outreach initiatives. You’re also invited to sponsor flowers for our Christmas services with a donation of any amount. Please make donations by December 12 to be included in the Christmas Altar Flowers Memorial bulletin.

The Season of Advent begins next Sunday, so please make a note of all the special offerings we have. These include the Advent Festival, Advent and Christmas Lessons & Carols services, and our Nativity Pageant, just to name a few. Please pick up a Sunday News handout if you haven’t already and join us for our special programming whenever you can.

As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

Mostly known for his choral works written mainly for the liturgy at Magdalen College, Oxford, Grayston Ives has had a career as an organist, choral director, and singer. Processional, one of only four organ pieces by Ives, starts in grand style with fast scales in the hands and chordal progressions before a dance-like theme appears on bright sounds. This builds in volume before an exact repeat of the opening brings the piece to a brilliant conclusion.

The First Lesson (seated)

Jeremiah 23:1-6

Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the LORD. Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the LORD. Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the LORD. The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: “The LORD is our righteousness.”

Lector The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

The Psalm (seated) Psalm 46:1-6

The God is our refuge and strength, * a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, * and though the mountains be toppled into the depths of the sea;

Though its waters rage and foam, * and though the mountains tremble at its tumult.

The LORD of hosts is with us; * the God of Jacob is our stronghold. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, * the holy habitation of the Most High.

God is in the midst of her; she shall not be overthrown; * God shall help her at the break of day.

Chanted
Choir to a psalm setting by Martin Luther.

The Second Lesson (seated)

Colossians 1:11-20

May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers-- all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Sequence Hymn (standing, sung by all)

Hymn 444, v. 1

“Blessed be the God of Israel, who comes to set us free” Thornbury

The Gospel (standing) Luke 23:33-43

Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory be to thee, O Lord.

When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots to divide his clothing. The people stood by, watching Jesus on the cross; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save

himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!” The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.” One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” He replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord.

People Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Sermon (seated)

The Nicene Creed (standing)

The Reverend Greg Pickens

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People: Form I (standing)

Celebrant Let us pray for the Church and for the world.

Lector For the peace of the world, for the welfare of the Holy Church of God, and for the unity of all peoples, let us pray to the Lord.

People Lord, have mercy.

Lector For Sean, our Presiding Bishop; George and Wayne, our Bishops; our parish clergy and their families; and for all the clergy and people, let us pray to the Lord.

People Lord, have mercy.

Offertory Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir)

Unclouded Day Shawn Kirchner

“Unclouded Day” was first written as the bright opening movement of Heavenly Home: Three American Songs, a suite of 19th-century hymn arrangements for a cappella mixed voices. This arrangement of the treasured gospel tune by J.K. Alwood retains as much of the original material as possible. A straightforward first verse and chorus are followed by two verses in which traditional bluegrass vocal stylings combine with counterpoint and fugue. The crescendo of excitement peaks in roof-raising fashion as the choir reaches the climactic final phrases.

O they tell me of a home far beyond the skies, They tell me of a home far away, And they tell me of a home

Where no storm-clouds rise:

O they tell me of an unclouded day.

O the land of cloudless days

O the land of an unclouded sky,

O they tell me of a home

Where no storm-clouds rise:

O they tell me of an unclouded day.

O they tell me of a home

Where my friends have gone, They tell me of a land far away, Where the tree of life in eternal bloom Sheds its fragrance through the unclouded day.

O the land of cloudless days

O the land of an unclouded sky,

O they tell me of a home

Where no storm-clouds rise:

O they tell me of an unclouded day.

They tell me of a King in his beauty there, They tell me that mine eyes shall behold Where He sits on a throne That is bright as the sun In the city that is made of gold!

O the land of cloudless days O the land of an unclouded sky, O they tell me of a home Where no storm-clouds rise:

O they tell me of an unclouded day.

“Praise God, from whom all blessings flow” Old 100th

The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer II (standing)

All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God.

Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and singing,

Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

Sanctus and Benedictus (standing, sung by all)

“Holy, holy, holy”

Please kneel as you are able.

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice forthe whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again.

For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

L ikewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord;

By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say,

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread (sung by all) Hymn S 152

“Alleluia”

Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

T. Frederick Candlyn was born in Davenham, Cheshire, England, in 1892, and died in Point Lookout, New York, in 1964. In 1942, Candlyn set the text of “Christ Whose Glory Fills the Skies” to music. Charles Wesley had originally written the poem in 1740. Wesley was educated at Oxford, where in 1727 he formed the “Oxford Methodist” group among his fellow students. His elder brother John joined in 1729, and together they established what is now the United Methodist Church.

Communion Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir)

Christ whose glory fills the skies

T. Frederick Candlyn

Christ, whose glory fills the skies, Christ, the true and only Light, Sun of righteousness, arise!

Triumph o’er the shade of night: Day-spring from on high, be near; Day-star, in my heart appear. Dark and cheerless is the morn, Unaccompanied by thee; Joyless is the day’s return, Till thy mercy’s beams I see; Till they inward light impart, Glad my eyes and warm my heart. Visit then this soul of mine!

Pierce the gloom of sin and grief! Fill me, Radiancy Divine; Scatter all my unbelief; More and more thyself display, Shining to the perfect day!

- Charles Wesley

The Post-Communion Prayer (kneeling, spoken by all)

Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs,

through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.
