hi! my name is sydney lystad and I am a fourth year interior architecture student at kansas state university. I enjoy creating spaces that provide unique experiences and tell a story. as a designer, I strive to create environments that not only inspire but also resonate with those who inhabit them. by seamlessly blending architectural forms, functions, and connections, I design to evoke emotions, spark conversation, and leave a lasting impression. my goals are to exceed expectations and deliver spaces that not only meet the needs of today but also anticipate the demands of tomorrow. I approach the design process with passion and dedication.

antcipation - explosion - haze
for this project, we were asked to design a memory cafe for the uk alzheimer’s society. the cafe is located in downtown phoenix, arizona. the purpose of the cafe is to celebrate the memories of the people the alzheimer’s society is benefitting. this was done by choosing a personal memory and translating the feeling of that memory into the space.
the memory I chose to incoporate into this cafe was from attending the taylor swift concert this past summer and all the emotions that occurred in this memory. the feelings of anticipation and explosion are displayed through the bright and playful environment by the way it embraces you as you enter. the anticipation builds up, the explosion of excitement occurs, and you leave in a haze.

canopy wine co.
shoots & leaves of the vine
for this project, we were asked to design a winery in sonoma county, california. after doing research on the process of growing grapes and the process of making wine, I created my client, the owner of the winery. my client wanted to celebrate the intricate layers of these two processes and create a sensory and immersive experience.
canopy is about how the process of wine making begins with the grapes on the vines. the canopy of a grapevine is composed of the leaves, flowers, shoots, trunk, and the fruit. the canopy houses the grapes as they begin to grow. this concept represents the layers that go into wine making. the evolution from ground to bottle begins outdoors and is completed inside the winery.

beverly grocery
for this project, we were asked to develop a brand and create a retail space that includes an activity or experience related to the brand. I chose to create an upscale grocery store in beverly hills with a learning kitchen. after doing research on beverly hills, grocery retail, and culinary education, I created my client, the store owner, who’s goal is to create a place where people can grow in their health journey, while also catering to the specific dietary needs and preferences of her community.
project concept
growth revolves around the transformative power of healthy eating, culinary exploration, and community connection. beverly grocery is an organic, upscale grocery store, that sells groceries, fresh produce and ingredients, drinks, snacks, and grab and go options, located in beverly hills. beverly grocery offers a sophisticated destination where health-conscious individuals can indulge in the latest wellness trends, as well as learn how to cook easy, healthy recipes.

acadia national park visitor center
for this project, we were asked to pick a national park and design an experiential visitor center. I chose acadia national park, located along the coast of maine. acadia is the first place in the united states to see the sunrise each morning. hundreds of visitors gather on cadillac mountain day after day to witness it.
the dynamic nature of acadia national park comes to life inside the visitor center due to how the sun path and seasons affect the experience within the space. the visitor center will allow visitors to experience the dynamic nature and different seasons, no matter what time of year they are visiting. the natural light will create a dynamic experience teaching visitors about the sun path and seasons experienced in the park. visitors will develop a deeper appreciation for the beauty inside the park, leaving them curious and eager to explore acadia.
