YEARS OF TRADITION IN EXCELLENCE AT SLUH

“FOR OVER 200 YEARS, ST. LOUIS UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL HAS BEEN COMMITTED TO LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE FORMATION FOR GOD’S GREATER GLORY. SLUH IS A PLACE WHERE STUDENTS BECOME TRUE LEADERS FOR THE WORLD.” — FR. IAN GIBBONS, SJ PRINCIPAL

JESUIT EDUCATION: A SLUH TRADITION From the moment a young man steps foot in SLUH, to the moment he strides across the stage at Powell Hall to accept his diploma, everything he will experience is designed to ensure he leaves SLUH intellectually inspired, open to growth, loving and a faithdriven “man for others” committed to doing justice. He will share a desire to achieve “Excellence in All Things”: an active, aspirational ideal that goes beyond academics, one that has driven, and differentiated, SLUH and its Jesuit traditions for over 200 years. It is our purpose, and our privilege, to oversee

the education and formation of 1,000 young men with exceptional God-given abilities, from whom we expect extraordinary things. To accept less would deprive them, and the world beyond, of their full potential. Throughout his four years at SLUH, he will be embraced with respect and inclusion through needs-blind admissions, statusblind friendships, a rich diversity of cultures and perspectives, and extensive co-curriculars that offer each student the opportunity to be all they can be. All in a loving and spirit-filled community.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION SLUH’s 32-acre campus is situated in Forest Park South in the city of St. Louis. It allows us to cultivate relationships and offer opportunities in many unique ways:

• Forest Park provides our teams with a glorious backyard in which to play and practice. • Internships and career interests are right around the corner at Washington University Medical Center, Saint Louis University and various midtown corporations. • Students easily access the Saint Louis Art Museum, Missouri Botanical Garden or the Saint Louis Science Center in classwork or club activities.

“STEAM IS NOT A BUZZWORD: WE FORM INQUIRY-BASED LEARNERS AND INTELLECTUAL PURSUERS OF PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS IN TODAY’S COMPLEX WORLD. THIS PROCESS CALLS FOR REFLECTION AND MINDFULNESS, BOTH OF WHICH ARE HALLMARKS OF JESUIT EDUCATION.” — MR. SLUH students are offered three distinct areas of support: • School Counselors are the first point of contact for a Jr. Billiken and assist parents/ students with their transition to SLUH. They also promote and support students’ success and wellness over their 4 years. • College Counselors help students and parents with the planning, discernment and application process while developing relationships with colleges and universities. •O ur comprehensive Learning Center provides students with learning and study skills that promote success in their four years. Learning coaches work one-on-one with students, and when needed, coordinate with faculty how best to assist the student.

FAITH

See SLUH’s 2019 senior class practicing their faith in service of others.

FIND GOD IN ALL THINGS Every afternoon, silence fills the entire school for two minutes. It’s a special moment dedicated to the Examen of Consciousness, a self-examination inspired by St. Ignatius. Then, each day for closing prayer, the hallways and classrooms echo with the sound of our Jr. Bills dedicating all of their thoughts, words and actions “To the Greater Glory of God.” Prayer and reflection are just two ways Campus Ministry further develop faith, spirituality and a sense of social justice in our students. Through a comprehensive program of liturgy, prayer, retreats and service, we form Men for and with Others while fostering the love of God, others and self.

FAITH IN ACTION SLUH students serve communities at over 80 different sites throughout the city of St. Louis, neighboring states, and globally. Our students are guided along a four-year service model with three years of foundation to propel students into their Senior Service Project. These experiences help SLUH students strive to live our motto of being “Men for Others.”

LEADERSHIP PURSUE YOUR INTERESTS Each Jr. Billiken is unique with a wide variety of interests and talents. Many of life’s most important lessons are taught outside the classroom. Opportunities for students to become leaders are unlimited. It’s also why our Jr. Bills form a deep sense of spirit and brotherhood—and have lots of fun—throughout their four years.

Whether it’s attending a retreat, slapping on some blue paint and outrageous attire for a pep rally, or working on the student newspaper well into the night, SLUH provides opportunities for each student to define who they become.

SPIRIT LIVE LIKE A JR. BILLIKEN Whether playing in the game or cheering on his fellow Jr. Billikens from the sidelines, your son is guaranteed a front-row seat for an incomparable display of Jr. Billiken spirit.

“THERE’S A SPECIAL ENERGY AT SLUH, A PALPABLE FORCE THAT BRINGS TOGETHER YOUNG MEN FROM ALL ACROSS OUR CITY TO TRANSFORM THEM INTO A SINGLE, UNIFIED BODY. I FELT IT THE MOMENT I STEPPED ON CAMPUS FOR THE FIRST TIME, AND THAT SAME SPIRIT CONTINUES TO ANIMATE MY EVERYDAY LIFE. THE BROTHERHOOD THAT ONE DISCOVERS AT SLUH IS, IN FACT, THE VERY ESSENCE OF THE INSTITUTION ITSELF.” – PJ BUTLER ‘20 PRESIDENT, STUCO

Each fall, freshmen paint themselves blue and, for the first time as Jr. Billikens, cheer on their team. It is a memorable experience for all and quite a sight to see. This has become the official “Welcome of our new students to the school community.
