2017-18 Season Preview

Consistency The Key For Lions In 2018 As a former golf professional and one who has played tournament golf, Southeastern head coach Jake Narro knows the pressures of competing and finishing down the stretch. “Those are some of the hurdles,” said Narro, who is in his third season coaching the Lions. “It’s hard finishing off rounds, it’s hard finishing off tournaments. It’s hard feeling comfortable challenging to win tournaments. We need to put ourselves in those positions a little bit more.” Southeastern found itself in those positions early in tournaments during the fall but had difficulties closing them out. Narro is looking to change that trend during the spring season. “Hopefully, we have a few little things in the spring along those lines,” Narro said. “The first thing is to figure out who you are as a golfer. Sometimes we feel like who we are is not good enough. And the truth is we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t. Secondly, our real theme this semester is grit and determination. We need to show more of that when things are not going our way. Anybody can play and have a good score when things are going good. But just because you’re not on the top of your game doesn’t mean you can’t have a good score and we have to figure that out.” Southeastern returns a pair of golfers, juniors Joris Etlin and William Meyers, who competed at the Southland Conference Tournament in 2017. The Lions led after the first round before finishing fifth. With Etlin, Meyers and junior Bailey Smith returning and the addition of freshmen Logan Kuehn and Kristofer Kerr, redshirtfreshman Grant Glorioso and sophomore Connor Wilson, Southeastern is looking to make another run at the conference title. Etlin, from Frejus, France, has emerged as the leader of the squad. He led the Lions in the fall with a 73.71 stroke average and had three top-20 finishes. He recorded the best finish of his career at the Duck Commander Intercollegiate with a tie for fourth and received honorable mention Southland Player of the Month recognition for September.

“Joris is a rising star,” Narro said. “The sky is the limit at this point if he continues doing what he is doing.” Meyers, out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, received All-Southland Conference honorable mention recognition for his sophomore season in 2016-17 after finishing with a 74.70 stroke average. He had four top-20 finishes, including a pair of top 10. Meyers struggled a bit in the fall but did have a pair of even-par rounds and Narro said he is ready for him to break out in the spring. “The real key is William and he is capable of it,” Narro said. “He is just fighting to get a little momentum, and once he gets it, I think he is going to take off on a run. He may be battling expectations a little bit. When you go from playing the three- or

four-man and then all of a sudden you’re look at as a number one of two, maybe he thought he had to do more than he is capable of doing. All we need is for him to be himself. He has a lot of talent.” Smith, from Mount Maunhanui, New Zealand, was limited by health issues in the fall. In his first season as a Lion in 2016-17, he had three rounds at or below par and finished tied for sixth at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate. Kuehn and Kerr both showed promise in the fall. Kuehn, a four-year letterwinner at St. Louis Catholic High School in Lake Charles, Louisiana, closed out the season with a 20th-place finish at the Duck Commander Intercollegiate. Kerr, who recorded four-straight top-10 finishes at the Louisiana State Division II Champion-

Southeastern junior Joris Etlin led the Lions in the fall with a 73.71 stroke average and had three top-20 finishes, including a tie for fourth at the Duck Commander Intercollegiate. He earned honorable mention Southland Conference Player of the Month consideration for September.

ships while playing for nearby Loranger High School, shot an even-par 71 in his second round as a collegian at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate. The spring schedule will have a different look. Southeastern opens the slate against a strong field at the All-American Intercollegiate, held at the Golf Club of Houston, home of the PGA Tour’s Shell Houston Open. The Lions then stay in the Houston area to play in the Colin Montgomerie/ HBU Huskies Intercollegiate, hosted by Southland rival Houston Baptist. “We have a great opportunity to play good,” Narro said of the opening tournaments. “There are going to be a lot of good teams there and what I want us to do is if we play well and match up well against some of the top-ranked teams in the country, we can draw on that for the rest of the semester as we go along. If we can beat these guys or those guys in a couple of rounds, as we migrate back to our more normal events, especially in the Southland Conference, we can draw on that.” Southeastern is next scheduled to play in the Bob Sitton Intercollegiate, hosted by Oral Roberts at the TPC-Four Seasons in Dallas just down the road from the Southland Conference Championship site in McKinney. “Hopefully we can go to it more in future because that’s 30, 40 minutes away

the Lake Charles Invitational. Southeastern closes out the regular season at the ASU Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate histed by Arkansas State. The Southland Conference Championships will once again be held at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney. The Lions have led after the first two rounds the past two seasons and will be out for their first title since 2013 and fifth overall. Narro said Southeastern’s experience in the tournament the past two years should help both the team and himself. “The more I go there, the more I’m familiar with it,” Narro said. “The more I realize how realistic it is for us to feel like we should go there and if play our game and get a break or two, there is no reason we can’t get some hardware.” Getting that hardware is on Narro’s bucket list for the Lions this spring. “My expectations for this team for the spring is to continue to improve,” Narro said. “To play up, to handle adversity and to obviously have better finishes. I expect us to go and challenge for the Southland Conference championship. I’m really looking forward to the team maturing a little bit and figuring out who they are as golfers.”

2017-18 Fall Tournament Recaps Etlin Ties for 17th at Sam Hall HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southeastern junior William Meyers fired an even-par 71 to highlight the final round for the Lions at the season-opening Sam Hall Intercollegiate at the Hattiesburg Country Club. Junior Joris Etlin (3-over 216 ) led Southeastern with a tie for 17th. Meyers (7-over 220) tied for 34th, freshman Kristofer Kerr (10-over 223) tied for 42nd and junior Bailey Smith (18-over 231) tied for 63rd. Freshman Logan Kuehn (20over 233) finished in a tie for 69th. Southeastern dropped a spot after shooting an 11-over 295 in the final round to finish 10th at 34-over 886. Sam Houston State defeated UT Arlington in a playoff after both finished at 5over 857. “Disappointing finish, obviously,” Southeastern head coach Jake Narro said. “I thought we had something going a little today to improve our position and we weren’t able to hold onto it. We didn’t finish any of our rounds off today. But we did have our first one of the year so hopefully we knocked a little rust off and a little nerves and now know what we have to work on. We have another one real quick to prove ourselves in.” Etlin shot a career-best 3-under-par 68 in the first round and added a 2-over 73 in the afternoon round to finish the first day in a six-way tie for third at 1-under 141. Kerr bounced back from a first-round 76 to shoot even-par 71 in the second round. Meyers was at 7-over 149 after rounds of 75 and 74. Smith shot rounds of 76 and 81 and Kuehn had a second-round 78 after shooting an 80 in the first round.

Joris Etlin had the low final round for the Lions, a 1-over-par-73, at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate at the Squire Creek Country Club. Etlin just missed a second straight top-20 finish, tying for 23rd at 2-over 218. Junior William Meyers finished in a three-way tie for 35th at 6-over 222 after a final round 74. Freshmen Kristofer Kerr and Logan Kuehn both tied for 58th at 12-over 228. Kerr shot a 5-over 77 on Tuesday while Kuehn was at 6-over 78. Southeastern came in 12th at 32-over 896. South Florida fired a 21-under 843 to defeat Stephen F. Austin by 13 shots. “Disappointing,” Southeastern head coach Jake Narro said. “I wish we had done better. We had a couple of average rounds. Joris had a pretty good event. We now have a little break, maybe a little regrouping and we’ll work on the things that have been hurting us.” South Florida’s Cristian DiMarco rallied with a 3-under 69 for an 8-under 208 to edge Stephen F. Austin’s Angelo Leyvani by a stroke for individual medalist honors. Etlin recorded a career-best for the second straight week with a first-round 4-under-par 68. ville fired a 5-under 283 to defeat Miami (Ohio) by 11 strokes with a 9-under 855. “It was a great week, a great golf course and great weather, a great event and we completely dogged it,” Southeastern head coach Jake Narro said. “We’re disappointed. We didn’t get it done. We came up here with a few more expectations than that, obviously. We didn’t coach or play good. We need to re-evaluate and double our efforts. We’re a young team taking our lumps, for sure.” Miami (Ohio)’s Patrick Flavin fired a 2-under 70 to take a two-stroke victory over Louisville’s Erik Dulik at 9-under 207. Meyers led Southeastern with a 1-over 73 in the second round. The Lions shot a 22-over-par 310 to tie Penn at 32-over 608. Host LSU won with an 11-under 585 after a final-round 277. The tournament, originally scheduled for three rounds, was shortened to 36 holes and the start of the final round was delayed nearly three hours by rain. There was another delay late in the round. “With the stop and start weather, it certainly was not a normal day of golf,” Southeastern head coach Jake Narro said. “On top of it, unfortunately, we didn’t back up a great day yesterday. The conditions while we were playing the first 15, 16 holes, were really good, actually, and it was just disappointing we couldn’t get it going again.” Freshman Logan Kuehn had the best finish of his young Southeastern career, tying for 29th

at 7-over 151 after a second round 4-over 76. Kuehn had birdies at No. 9, 11 and 17. Junior Joris Etlin also shot a 151 after a 3over 75 Saturday. But obviously overall, he’s really happy. Freshman Logan Kuehn also had the highest finish of his career, tying for 20th at 18-over 23. NCAA infraction notice On December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally self-reported by Southeastern Louisiana University almost one year ago, largely agreeing to the penalties self-imposed by the university. As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligibility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 2009-2010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 20052006 and 2006-2007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibility requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to graduate from Southeastern or left the university in good academic standing. Athletics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certification during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current student-athlete at Southeastern participated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-

athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has implemented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compliance coordinator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification process and streamline monitoring, changes in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of student-athletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infractions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are absolutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules,” stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues. On April 9, 2015, The NCAA Committee on

Infractions finalized an infractions case for violations stemming from June to July 2013. As a result of the case, Southeastern’s probation period has been extended for one year, ending on December 9, 2018. Southeastern self-repoted that a former volleyball coach had engaged in impermissible athletically-related activity and impermissible lodging and tryouts for prospective student-athletes. “Southeastern Louisiana University received final confirmation by the NCAA Infractions Committee that stemmed from self-reported violations related to recruiting and practice irregularities in the university’s women’s volleyball program during the spring and summer 2013,” Artigues said. “The university selfreported the five violations to the NCAA following a thorough internal investigation, which led to the resignation of the then-Head Volleyball Coach. Southeastern has accepted the penalties and corrective actions imposed by the NCAA. “Our athletics program is committed to complete compliance with all NCAA rules and legislation,” Artigues added. “Intentional disregard for this responsibility will be dealt with firmly and swiftly.”
