2017 Season Preview

Team members are, from left, bottom row: Kim Porche, Logan Phillips, Gabrielle Alexander,Vanessa Arzaluz, Maja Blanck, Amber Marinero, Alexandra Gundersen and Caroline Lee; middle row: McBride, Lauren Babcock, Payton Colson, Maddie Kresevic, Jessi Cooper, Larissa Galvez Estrada, Miranda Marquez and assistant coach Mary Mancin; and top row: Abby Johnson, Maggie Ramsey, Matilda Hallas-Potts, Sofia Olsson, Michaela Hawthorn, Bailey Scott, Megan Gordon, Christina Cutura, Elizabeth Hunter and Caitlin LaMarche.

Lady Lions Open New Era in 2017 It has been 19 years since the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions have opened a soccer season with a new coach. In that span, the Lady Lions recorded 213 wins on the pitch, eight Southland Conference championships and three trips to the NCAA Tournament. New head coach Christopher McBride what it means to be a part of a winning soccer program, as a player and assistant coach at Martin Methodist and as an assistant at North Alabama and South Alabama. Now, McBride is out to return Southeastern to its winning ways after the Lady Lions finished 7-11-2 overall and tied for sixth in the Southland at 4-6-1 in 2016. Southeastern reached the Southland Tournament for the 11th straight season before losing to eventual champion Houston Baptist in the opening round. “It’s an exciting time for me as a coach to come in,” McBride. “They won a conference championship here in 2013 and 2015 and a lot of our team, especially that junior class, were on the team that won the championship in 2015. So after last year with the results and where they finished in the conference, the girls themselves have developed a mentality of not letting

that happening again. The work this spring when they got together was unbelievable. They know what our goals are and have set them early for the fall.” McBride and assistant coach Mary Mancin will not be the only new faces on the pitch for Southeastern this season. The Lady Lions bring in 11 newcomers in 2017, nine true freshman, a redshirt freshman and a junior transfer. They will join 13 returnees, two of whom, juniors Maggie Ramsey and Elizabeth Hunter, were limited to six and 12 matches, respectively. A third, Lexie Gundersen, redshirted the season. Southeastern is replacing seven seniors, including 2016 All-Southland forward Casey Peacock and 2015 All-America goalkeeper Hope Sabadash. “We have a lot of new players coming in and some who redshirted last year, so it’s going to be like a brand new team,” McBride said. With the new staff and players will come a new up-tempo, attacking style of play, one Southeastern demonstrated during a trio of matches during the spring. “We saw a little bit of that in the spring,” McBride said. “We finished up lot more offen-

sive than defensive. But at the same time, each game will be different in the way it comes. There are some very strong teams in the conference who are very athletic and very powerful and you may not be able to play the same way against them. We’ll have to be a lot more defensive. Some teams, it will be an open game and both teams will take some more chances. We’re going to play a little more adventurous, a little more creative, a way our girls will enjoy playing.” Southeastern returns all but two of its 10 top points scorers from 2016. Junior forward Sofia Olsson returns after leading the Lady Lions with six goals and tying Peacock with 13 points. Ramsey and senior midfielder Maddie Kresevic each had three goals and seven points while junior defender Christina Cutura and junior midfielder Vanessa Arzaluz added two goals and six points apiece. Senior midfielder Lauren Babcock tied Peacock with a teamhigh five assists and joined junior defender Payton Colson and sophomore forward Amber Marinero with five points each. Looking to add to that attack are Gundersen, freshmen Jessi Cooper at forward and Larissa

2017 Season Preview Galvez Estrada, Megan Gordon, Gabrielle Anderson and Miranda Marquez in the midfield. Injuries, particularly to Hunter and senior Katie Noonan, affected the defense a season ago. Southeastern went from allowing 0.83 goals per match in 2015 to 1.61 in 2016. That unit should be improved with the return of Hunter, senior Kim Porche, sophomores Caitlin LaMarche and Caroline Lee and the addition of junior Logan Phillips and freshmen Matilda Hallas-Potts, Maja Blanck and Abby Johnson. Southeastern will have a big hole to fill in the net with the graduation of Sabadash, a four-year starter who ranked fourth nationally with 122 saves in 2016 while recording five shutouts. A pair of freshmen, Michaela Hawthorn and Bailey Scott, who battle for the starting role. McBride said he likes the leadership of the upperclassmen and the versatility of the team as a whole going into the season. “Our seniors and juniors have experience in winning a conference championship and that experience will be good for our freshmen coming in because it’s going to lead them in the right direction and set the tone for not only this year, but next year and the year after that,” McBride said. “And there’s a lot of versatility in there, a lot of players who are very adaptable. We have a lot of ability there to play different positions and have different roles and responsibilities.” McBride said the key will be how fast the newcomers can be integrated in with the returners. “When you look at 11 players coming in, that’s nearly half of the team,” McBride said. “The biggest thing for us is getting them together and playing as a team together pretty quickly. Getting them used to each other, finding out how we play, finding our individual strengths and weaknesses and how we can put that together into a game plan to prepare for each opponent and prepare for us to make sure we can play the best that we can play and make teams adapt to us. The key is that the girls, the seniors and juniors, have done that already, to have that mind set. It’s all about professionalism, it’s all about competing and it’s all about getting there. That’s where we are.” The squad will have to come together quickly as the Lady Lions open the season at home against Jackson State, a team that advanced to the quarterfinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament in 2016. Southeastern then hits the road to play a pair of a pair of teams which advanced to their respective conference tournament championship matches in Georgia State and Alabama State. Alabama State won the SWAC Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, one of three teams on the Lady Lions’ schedule to do so. Southeastern returns home to host in-state rivals Louisiana-Lafayette and Southern before traveling to face McBride’s former program,

South Alabama. The Jaguars also advanced to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Sun Belt Tournament title and pulling upsets of No. 1 Florida State and Ole Miss on their way to a 15-6-1 record. The Lady Lions close out the non-conference slate at home against ULM. “It’s a tough schedule,” McBride said. “Three SWAC schools and four Sun Belt. Of those seven games, none of them are going to be easy at all. We’re just hoping we prepare right this preseason, everyone can stay healthy and we can get our job done in the non-conference games.” Southeastern opens Southland play at McNeese before hosting Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word. The Lady Lions then visit Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Houston Baptist before returning home against Lamar. After trips to Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State, Southeastern welcomes in Northwestern State and reigning conference regular season champion Central Arkansas before closing out the season at Nicholls. “There are no easy games on it,” McBride said of the conference slate, noting UCA went undefeated in conference play before losing to Houston Baptist in the tournament semifinals. “Everybody can beat everyone. We saw that last year. We’ll see it this year with all the teams. It’s going to be who can prepare themselves best for the opponent.” Southeastern will be looking to return to

Corpus Christi, Texas for the tournament, which grows to eight teams this year with Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word becoming eligible. The Lady Lions needed a win over Nicholls in the final match of the season to make the tournament in 2016, their lone win in their final five matches. McBride is looking for a stronger finish this season. “Unless you win the whole national tournament, you always finish with a loss,” McBride said. “We lost four of our last five games. That’s something we are going to look at. Coach Mary and I, we’ve dug in deep this spring and watched a lot of film. We looked at the statistics, talked to the players, found out about the conference, done all our research. We’re looking at it and saying, ‘how can we prepare ourselves better?’.” When you lose four of your last five, it’s not setting yourself up for the conference tournament. We want to peak at the conference tournament. We want to get there, but we want to peak when we get there. We don’t want to be falling off and scraping and just get in there. “We’ve been preparing for the whole fall. We’ll take each game as it comes. No opponent is more important than another. We’ll be taking every single game as we should and preparing for every opponent in the same way. We have expectations and the girls have seen that. They have the same expectations as the coaching staff so we are prepared for that.”

Southeastern senior midfielder Lauren Babcock (16) earned Preseason All-Southland Conference second team honors after tying for the team lead with five assists and ranking 10th in the conference and 126th nationally with 0.33 assists per game in 2016.

Woodbridge, Toronto Lynx, Dixie and Toronto Blizzard club teams. Her Woodbridge teams won the 2016 CGSL league and cup championships and was the League One league runner-up and league cup finalists, while her Toronto Lynx squad won the 2015 Super Y League Midwest Division title. “She has a big presence, very vocal,” Southeastern head coach Christopher McBride said. “She’s a great shot stopper and her distribution for her is immaculate. She can play a ball 60 yards on a bang. Her accuracy is unbelievable. She’s great at commanding the box. Anything that comes into that section of the box, from 12 yards

out, is going to be hers.” Scott lettered four years in soccer at Fontainebleau High School where she helped lead the Bulldogs to the Division I state championship match in 2017, the 2014 district title and the quarterfinals in 2014, ’15 and ’16. She received the Bulldog Award for soccer, was named the New Orleans Advocate Player of the week this past January and was selected to play in the Louisiana East vs. West All-Star Game. “Her athleticism is incredible and her ability to block shots is really good,” McBride said. “Her reactions are really quick. Anything close range that keepers aren’t

supposed to get to, she will get to.” McBride said the competition between the two could continue into the season. “They are going to work together to push each other to get better,” McBride said. “We’ve got an exhibition game to see how that goes and then we’ve got games and practices to see who is performing the best. As freshmen, we just want them to get on the field quickly. We want to get them experience and playing time under their belt, to feel confident and ready to play, and hopefully we as coaches have a tough decision as far as who is going to be starting for us.”

season ago. Also back are senior Kim Porche (Luling, La.), who played in just nine; junior Christina Cutura (Pearl River, La.), an honorable mention All-Southland selection as a freshman; junior Payton Colson (Flowood, Miss.); redshirt freshman Lexie Gundersen (Reading, Pa.); and sophomores Caitlin LaMarche (Laguna Nigel, Calif.) and Caroline Lee (Tryon, N.C.). Cutura and Colson combined for four goals and 11 points in 2016. “We have Lexie (Gundersen)

and Liz (Hunter) back and we’ve got two new ones coming in Hallas-Potts and Logan Phillips,” McBride said. And we have Caitlin LaMarche back there was well. We have a lot of more depth back there. We’ll be able to play people back in the position they are supposed to be playing. Defense was also a focus of McBride’s first recruiting class as he added Tyler Community College transfer Logan Phillips (Arlington, Texas) and freshmen Matilda Hallas-Potts (Sheffield, England),

Maja Blanck (Orust, Sweden) and Abby Johnson (Yardley, Pa.). “We have lots of options,” McBride said. “It’s really just finding who fits the best, who plays well with each other, who we are playing against, how we will defend our opponent, how we are going to attack our opponent and from what direction. We have a lot of girls there and all are going to play.”

points in 2016. “Both those seniors are good leaders,” McBride said. “And they are always moving, always looking for the ball, always wanting to attack and looking to defend. Our energy in there is going to be incredible.” Junior Vanessa Arzaluz (Sparks, Nev.), who had two goals and six points, is technically sound and can pick apart a defense. She was the conference’s Defensive Player of

the Week for the opening week of the season. Southeastern’s attack will be bolstered by the return of junior Maggie Ramsey (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), who tied for third on the team with three goals and seven points despite being limited to six matches. She was named the Southland’s Offensive Player of the Week after scoring two goals against Jackson State. Joining those four will be

freshmen Gabrielle Anderson (Mandeville, La.), Megan Gordon (Clophill, England) and Miranda Marquez (Carrollton, Texas), a transfer from Louisiana Tech. “Who’s going to play, that’s going to be the biggest challenge for me and (assistant) coach (Mary) Mancin - finding out who our best three are,” McBride said.

FORWARDS

game very well and always wants to get better.” Sophomore Amber Marinero (West Covina, Calif.) had five points, including a pair of goals, her freshman season with the Lady Lions. “She did really well this spring in the games we played,” McBride said. “Her movement and her reading of the game are top. She did a great job of holding the ball up

there and playing underneath and letting us get behind the teams we were playing.” Joining the offense are freshmen Jessi Cooper (Jackson, Miss.) and Larissa Galvez Estrada (Frankfurt, Germany). “Cooper is really good technically and potentially one of the quickest girls on the team,” McBride said. “She is really athletic as well. Where she plays on the

front line, that will depend. We’ll see how the preseason goes. “Larissa is also technically very sound. She loves the game and represented her team at the highest level in Germany. She’s athletic, she knows how to break down compact defenses and she knows how to get behind them. She’s going to be a super addition to the team as well.”

A pair of freshmen will vie to become the next All-Southland goalkeeper for Southeastern, following in the footsteps of Allison Holladay, Nicole Helmig, Crista Wood, Holly Moran, Lacey Bockhaus and Hope Sabadash. Michaela Hawthorn is from the same hometown as Sabadash – Mississauga, Ontario, Canada – while Bailey Scott is a local product from Mandeville, Louisiana. The two will compete for the starting role following the graduation of Sabadash and Casey Jeanfreau and the departure of junior Matilda Bylund. Hawthorn previously played for

Southeastern’s defensive squad was racked by injuries last season. Not only did key players miss substantial time, but their absence forced other players to play out of position. That was a big factor in the Lady Lions’ allowing nearly twice as many goals in 2016 as the season before. Southeastern is expected to be much deeper in that end of the field in 2017. Junior Elizabeth Hunter (Bakersfield, Calif.) returns after being limited to 12 matches a

Southeastern also has options in the midfield with the return of four starters and three additions. Senior Lauren Babcock (Canton, Mich.) tied for the team lead with five assists and will be joined by another senior, Maddie Kresevic (Solon, Ohio) to give the Lady Lions high energy from the middle. Kresevic, an honorable mention All-SLC selection as a sophomore, scored three goals and had seven

Southeastern is expected to play a more aggressive, attacking-style offense under McBride. Leading the attack will be junior Sofia Olsson (Orust, Sweden), who scored a team-high six goals while tying for the lead with 13 points. “She’s a junior and still has two years left, so we are excited about that,” McBride said. “She is dynamic and understands the

2017 Southland Conference Preview Lady Lions Picked 7th in preseason poll FRISCO,Texas – A new-look Southeastern

Louisiana women’s soccer squad, with a new coaching staff and 11 newcomers, was picked seventh in the 2017 Southland Conference Preseason Poll. Southeastern received 106 points in the vote by the league’s coaches and sports information staffs. The Lady Lions graduated seven seniors from a squad that finished 7-11-2 overall while tying for sixth in the Southland at 4-6-1. The Lady Lions return 13 from that squad. They will be joined by 10 freshmen and a junior transfer. “When you graduate as many players as we graduated (from 2016), the squad is pretty unknown to the conference,” first-year head coach Chris McBride said. “As coaches, we’re still evaluating what our best lineup is and assessing the players, so that’s fair for us. We’re happy with that. It’s the preseason and nobody has seen anyone. There are changes every year - newcomers nobody has seen, seniors depart, injuries happen, freshmen and sophomores from last year emerge - so a lot can change throughout the year. It’s been a long time since last November. The preseason vote is a reflection of where we are expected to be but it’s not a true reflection of where we will finish this year.” Central Arkansas was picked to repeat as regular season champions with 14 first-place votes and 232 points overall. UCA went undefeated in the regular season in 2016 after being picked to finish sixth by both the coaches and SIDs. Stephen F. Austin, last season’s runner-up, received five first-place votes and 219 points in being picked second. Abilene Christian was third with four first-place votes and 204 points. Houston Baptist, the reigning tournament champion, received the other first place vote and 180 points for fourth. Northwestern State was fifth with 138 points and McNeese sixth with 131. Lamar followed Southeastern with 93 points. Sam Houston State (86), Nicholls (82), UIW (61) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (52) rounded out the poll.

Babcock makes All-SLC preseason team

Southeastern Louisiana senior midfielder Lauren Babcock, the Lady Lions’ returning assists leader, was named to the Preseason AllSouthland Conference second team. Babcock played in 15 matches in 2016 with 12 starts. The native of Canton, Michigan tied for the team lead with five assists, ranking 10th

10

in the Southland and 126th nationally with 0.33 assists per game. She finished with five points and six shots, all on goal for the Lady Lions. Southeastern finished 7-11-2 overall and tied for sixth in the Southland with a 4-6-1 mark. Babcock assisted on a goal by Amber Marinero to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead in a 2-1 loss to Houston Baptist in the opening round of the Southland Tournament. Babcock also assisted on Christina Cutura’s opening goal in a 3-0 win over Nicholls in the season finale. She had an assist in a 3-0 win over Sam Houston State and her free kick led to hand ball in the box that resulted in Maddie Kresevic’s match-winning penalty kick in a 1-0 overtime victory against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. She also dished out a career-high two assists in a 5-1 win at Southern. The preseason all-conference teams are voted upon by the league’s head coaches. Returning players from the 2016 All-Conference first and second teams are automatically named to the 2017 Preseason All-Conference teams at their respective positions. Second team players are elevated to first team if the first team slot is vacated by a non-returning player at their same position.

Southeastern junior midfielder Elizabeth Hunter carries a 4.0 GPA into the 2017 season. She is expected to graduate in the spring with a degree in finance.

2017 Lady Lions continuing tradition of academic success The Southeastern women’s soccer team has had a proud tradition of success on the pitch with 19 trips to the Southland Conference Tournament and three NCAA Tournament appearances. The Lady Lions have also had a tradition of success in the classroom, one that is being continued by the current squad. Fifteen members of the 2017 team carry a 3.0 or better grade point average into the season, led by junior midfielder Elizabeth Hunter with a 4.0. Twenty-one Lady Lions were named to the Southland Conference Commissioner’s 2016 Fall Honor Roll with senior Casey Peacock making the conference’s All-Academic first team. Peacock was the 45th Lady Lion to be named to the Southland All-Academic team since 2002. Ten soccer student-athletes received their degrees this past spring with Amber Lasher among 19 graduates to receive Southeastern’s highest academic honor, the President’s Medal for Academic Excellence. Lasher was among three student-athletes who were honored at the annual Southeastern Athletics Academic Banquet in April for having the highest GPA in the department among

graduating seniors. Lasher and Hunter were also among four student-athletes who were presented with “Athletic Scholar” black jackets for having a cumulative 4.0 GPA. Since the 1997 season, Southeastern has had 11 soccer student-athletes named to the NSCAA All-South Region Scholar Team. Four more have been selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District squad. Kim Kwolek (1999) and Dana Mayer (2009) have been recipients of the Southland’s prestigious F.L. McDonald Academic Scholarship. Mayer (2009), Alexis Tramacchi (2003), Kari Yost (2006) and Kyle MacIntosh (2010) were named the conference’s Student-Athlete of the Year for soccer. “Academics is extremely important,” head coach Chris McBride said. “At the end of the day, after these four years, we want to encourage as many girls as possible to go play soccer. But the most important part is that at the end of the four years, they walk off with a degree in a timely manner. “Our girls are very studious student-athletes. We carry a very successful team GPA with respects to our goals and the athletic department’s goals. We put a lot of emphasis on good grades.”

Head Coach Christopher McBride

Christopher McBride Head Coach 1st Season at Southeastern Louisiana • Martin Methodist, 2011 Christopher McBride was officially named the fourth head coach in the history of the Southeastern women’s soccer program on Nov. 28, 2016. McBride follows Kim Stewart (199597), Blake Hornbuckle (1998-2016) and Matt Muia (interim, 2016) as head coaches of the Lady Lions. McBride comes to Southeastern from the University of South Alabama where he served one season as an assistant coach under head coach Graham Winkworth. The Jaguars captured their fourth straight Sun Belt Conference Tournament title this past season after finishing with a 7-3 conference mark during the season. USA advanced to the NCAA Tournament, losing to 11thranked Auburn, 4-0, in the first round to finish the season at 15-6-1 overall. McBride previously was at North Alabama for four seasons, helping lead the Lions to a 50-21-6 record and three NCAA Division II Tournament appearances. In 2015, he worked with UNA goalkeepers who recorded eight shutouts and a 0.75 goals against average as the Lions won both the Gulf Coast Conference regular season and conference titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament with a 15-3-2 record.

12

UNA had a 0.57 GAA, posting 11 shutouts — including a streak of seven straight — in going 14-4-1 with a NCAA Tournament appearance in 2014. In his first season, McBride helped the Lions record a 136-1 mark that included a 1-0 victory over Valdosta State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. UNA tied for second in the GSC that year with a league record of 6-2-1, finishing third in the conference with seven shutouts. McBride is a 2011 graduate of Martin Methodist, serving as team captain twice in a four-year career during which time the RedHawks won one TranSouth Conference regular-season championship and one league tournament title in addition to advancing the quarterfinals of the 2009 NAIA Tournament. As a senior in 2010, McBride — who was selected a TranSouth scholar athlete on three occasions — was named an Academic All-American while receiving both the Tom Read Academic Award for the highest grade-point average by a male student-athlete and the Royce Hughes Physical Education Non-Licensure Award. Serving as an assistant coach in 2011, he helped MMC to a 14-2-2 overall record as

the RedHawks would claim the TranSouth regular-season championship while advancing to the final 16 of the NAIA Tournament. A native of Scotland, McBride earned his master’s degree in health and human performance from the University of North Alabama in 2013. He received a bachelor’s degree from Martin Methodist in physical education with a minor in biology, graduating with magna cum laude honors. McBride was one of 30 coaches selected from more than 300 applicants in August to the 2017-18 United Soccer Coaches 30 Under 30 Program, a year-long education and mentorship opportunity for a select few up-and-comers who have made soccer coaching their career of choice. McBride holds a Scottish Youth F.A. level “E” and “D” License as well as Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 Licenses in Goalkeeping from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, in addition to an NSCAA National Diploma and has also helped coach the Alabama Olympic Development Program. Assistant Coach Profile

Mary Mancin Assistant Coach

First Season at Southeastern Louisiana • Columbus State (2013)

Mary Mancin is starting her first season at Southeastern in 2017 after spending a season on the University of Tennessee at Martin staff. Mancin, who joined UT Martin in August 2016, served as the goalkeeper coach for the Lady Skyhawks as well as assisted in the day to day running of the program. Mancin joined the Skyhawk staff after a stint as the goalkeeper coach at Belmont University, where she coached Oakland University junior transfer Stephanie Bukovec, who was named to the All-OVC second team, All-OVC Newcomer team, and accrued multiple OVC goalkeeper of the week honors in the fall of 2015. The junior broke into the Belmont record book in her first season with the Bruins in GAA, saves, shutouts, and minutes played. Prior to Belmont, Mancin served as a graduate assistant coach (2013-2015) at Columbus State University, alongside Peach Belt Conference all-time winningest head coach, Jay Entlich. 2016 In Review Back in the Tournament

Southeastern finished 7-11-2 in 2016, its first nonwinning season since 2005 and just the fifth season under .500 in its history. The Lady Lions advanced to the Southland Conference Tournament for a league-record 19th time before losing to eventual champion Houston Baptist 2-1 in the opening round.

Change at the Top

For the first time since the 1998 season, Southeastern had a new head coach on the sidelines when assistant Matt Muia replaced Blake Hornbuckle 11 matches into the season. Muia went 3-5-1 as the interim head coach and led the Lady Lions to a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament. Christopher McBride was named the program’s fourth head coach in November.

Southeastern Athletics Infraction Notice On December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally self-reported by Southeastern Louisiana University almost one year ago, largely agreeing to the penalties selfimposed by the university. As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligibility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 2009-2010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibility requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to graduate from Southeastern or left the university in good academic standing. Athletics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certification during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current student-athlete at Southeastern participated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has implemented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compliance coordinator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification process and streamline monitoring, changes

in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of student-athletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infractions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are absolutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules,” stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues. On April 9, 2015, The NCAA Committee on Infractions finalized an infractions case for violations stemming from June to July 2013. As a result of the case, Southeastern’s probation period has been extended for one year, ending on December 9, 2018. Southeastern self-repoted that a former volleyball coach had engaged in impermissible athletically-related activity and impermissible lodging and tryouts for prospective student-athletes. “Southeastern Louisiana University received final confirmation by the NCAA Infractions Committee that stemmed from self-reported violations related to recruiting and practice irregularities in the university’s women’s volleyball program during the spring and summer 2013,” Artigues said. “The university self-reported the five violations to the NCAA following a thorough internal investigation, which led to the resignation of the then-Head Volleyball Coach. Southeastern has accepted the penalties and corrective actions imposed by the NCAA. “Our athletics program is committed to complete compliance with all NCAA rules and legislation,” Artigues added. “Intentional disregard for this responsibility will be dealt with firmly and swiftly.”
