Randon changes pageant systems

Emily Randon is a past Miss Southeastern and was apart of the Miss Louisiana Organization, competing for the title Miss Louisiana in 2017.

Randon, a 2018 kinesiology graduate has had experience in the pageant world since her firstever pageant, Miss Southeastern Louisiana University.

Randon discussed what she has been doing since winning the title.

“In 2015, I competed in my first pageant and was surprised and honored with the title of Miss Southeastern Louisiana University,” shared Randon.

“Each year since then, I have been incredibly thankful for the opportunity to compete on the Miss Louisiana stage. Pageantry has taught me so much about myself and the world around me.”

The winner of the Miss Southeastern pageant goes on to compete in the annual Miss Louisiana pageant each year, amongst other women representing organizations, universities and parishes.

Randon also discussed how competing has affected her personally.

“Competing for Miss Louisiana has empowered me to share my platform and talent with thousands,” shared Randon. “It has also given me a voice and a forum to speak about the world’s largest issues. I am thankful for all of the experiences, memories, skills, and friendships that pageantry has given to me.”

Randon’s platform for the Miss Southeastern pageant was, “Love the Skin You’re In,” where she had the opportunity to spread this message and participate in many community involved services. For her more recent competitions, Randon has promoted the STEM field.

“With my platform, ‘Raising the Barre’, I have partnered with NASA and Microsoft as a mentor for students interested in entering the fields of STEM,” explained Randon. “I have also been honored to win the Women in STEM award at Miss Louisiana in 2018 and 2019.”

Randon has since stayed devoted to competing and discussed her plans for the future in pageantry.

“Now that I have aged out of the Miss America system, I have transitioned into the Miss USA system with the title of Miss Lafayette, USA,” explained Randon. “I am very excited to be competing for the title of Miss Louisiana USA in Luling, Louisiana. I would love to see my fellow lions come out and support.”

The biggest difference between Miss USA and Miss

America is that Miss America does not compete for a higher title, unlike Miss USA. Miss USA goes on further to compete in the Miss Universe Pageant, where she will group against title holders from different countries around the world.

Randon also explained what has pushed her to keep competing and what she wishes to achieve through her titles.

“It is such an amazing and empowering feeling to be surrounded by so many driven, intelligent, and talented young woman from all over the state,” stated Randon. “I wouldn’t be the woman I am today if I hadn’t competed for Miss Louisiana.”

The Miss Louisiana USA 2020 pageant will be held on October 18-19 in Luling, Louisiana. The pageant will be held at the Lafon Performing Arts Center, with ticket prices starting at $45.

Contestants will be competing through a panel of judges in an interview, swim wear and evening gown competition. In order to compete, a contestant must be born between the years of 1992-2001.

Randon believes that pageantry truly empowers women and is overall, a great experience.

“Pageantry has challenged me to become the best version of myself and for that, I am so thankful,” said Randon.

Random is also currently pursuing her doctorate in kinesiology at Tulane.

In June 2018, Emily Randon, an alumna of the university, competed in Miss Louisiana for the fourth time.

Learn to manage a budget in college to form good future financial habits GABRIELLE WOOD Budgeting is a key essential in saving money. Learning to have a budget in college is important because it prepares students for “real life” skills outside of school.

A budget is a plan to save increments of money for a certain period of time. An example of this would be putting away $200 each month for an upcoming trip, or $20 a week specifically towards one’s desired entertainment.

This is helpful to everyone because it provides a bases to how much they can or can’t spend. Being in college, it may seem difficult for some students to handle their money on their own

and figure out what money can go towards each area that it needs to go, this is where a budget becomes useful.

The article “Reasons why you Should Budget Your Money”, discussed why budgeting is an essential life skill for everyone.

“If you feel like you are not in control of your money and you are constantly wondering where it went and what happened to it, budgeting can put you in control,” stated thebalance.com. “It allows you to prioritize your spending, track how you are doing and realize when you need to stop. It puts a solid plan into place that is easy to flow and gives you the chance to plan and prepare for the future.”

The first step in creating a budget is to figure out the number of expenses that will be needed. Typically, people add up the amount of expenses for a month’s worth of a budget. However, it can also go by weeks, months, and possibly years if desired.

Common factors that go into a budget can be a car note, insurance, grocery expenses, gas, and extra spending money.

University student brings attention to Clark Hall safety GERARD BORNE STAFF REPORTER

A concern has been raised on campus regarding the safety of students around the Clark Hall area.

Allison Arrigoni, a senior art major, has recently shed light on a wall at Clark Hall that may cause concern to students who pass it at night.

Arrigoni shared what her main concern is with the brick wall located in between Clark Hall and the Clark Hall Annex.

“When I exited Clark Hall and turned right, I quickly came to a small doorway opening made from a brick wall between the two buildings,” stated Arrigoni. “There is a large tree that grows over the wall, and many plants on the other side of the wall. From the east side of the building, you go through the doorway/opening blind. You cannot see up close if anyone is on the other side of that wall, much less from the cul de sac parking lot. From the parking lot on the west side, unless you pull all the way up to the stadium, you cannot see down the alleyway.

From the parking area, there is still plenty of hidden space behind the bushes, tree and a bench that sits under the tree.”

Arrigoni feels students are vulnerable when walking alone in the area.

“Anyone walking down this alley is vulnerable to attack or assault,” said Arrigoni.

“If they pull you behind the wall, behind the bench or even into the recessed alcove of the photography and sculpture classroom doors, no one from either direction would see you.”

Arrigoni explained what she would like to see happen to the brick wall.

“I feel like the brick wall extending from each building should be taken down to make the opening larger,” commented Arrigoni.

“Allowing people to see through the alley from one side to the other. I also think cameras would help deter any wrongdoing in this area.”

The tree and the wall blocks sight from surrounding area, which makes Arrigoni worried.

“I believe this mostly affects anyone taking photography, sculpture and pottery classes or uses the labs during non-class hours,” explained Arrigoni. “Many hours of lab time are required for these subjects. So, it’s often late at night when students, lab monitors and teachers are leaving, but it also affects anyone who uses this alleyway for any reason. It is secluded with no line of sight and is dangerous.”

Dr. Eric Summers, vice president of student affairs, was made aware about Arrigoni’s concern and the situation was handled.

“They did make sure to not only check that the light that was installed over the tree was working, but they have also added additional lighting down the alley,” stated Arrigoni. “I appreciate their quick work but still feel the area is unsafe, especially at night and outside of class hours.”

Summers explained what his first steps were when he found out about the issue.

“The first thing I did was contact the physical plant to see if the lighting was appropriate,” stated Summers. “They came back to me and told me that the lighting could improve in the

Summers shared what the plans are for the brick wall.

“As of right now, we do not plan to remove the wall,” commented Summers. “But, we still will continue to access the area and keep an eye on it. The University Police Department has increased patrol in the area, and they monitor the area very closely.”

Summers requested students or faculty concerned with walking back to their vehicle to contact the UPD. “Call the UPD if you do not feel comfortable walking back to your vehicle,” shared Summers.

“Their hours are 24 hours a day seven days a week. The safety of our students and faculty is the most important thing to us on campus.”

This just provides accuracy to the amount of money that will be needed to budget each expense.

Once each expense is listed and the money that will be made each month is figured out, then a person will be able to put together how much money can specifically go to each. It is best

to determine which expenses may be more important than others, considering these will be the ones that money will go to first. Once each essential expense is budgeted, then there should be leftover money for things that are considered nonessential such as free-time activities.

This allows one to be able to visualize what their earnings will go towards and be able to have a guideline of what is needed to be budgeted. It also may help one to stop overspending, a common problem

for many college students.

When having a budget, it is also very important to save money. Having a tight budget, where one is restricted or limited to the amount fo expenses money can go towards, can be very straining.

It may also be helpful to save for long term investments over a period of time.

Budgeting can be used as a plan for many students to have a better grip on their spending habits and to keep track of a financial plan.

The Office of Student Engagement has a separate branch that helps students from diverse backgrounds, cultures and nationalities .

OSE works with a mission to strengthen diversity across campus through an organization called Multicultural and International Student Affairs.

Claudio Franc, a graduate student and a studentworker for MISA, described the structure of MISA and what he does for the organization.

“MISA is divided up into two separate branches with Multicultural Affairs and the National PanHellenic Council,” said Franc. “My job role as a graduate student is basically running the Food

Pantry. I do different food drives throughout the year for the community. On top of that, I also help with international students in getting them ready for college and helping with anything they need.”

Franc described some of the events that MISA hosts throughout the school year.

“We just hosted the ‘Longest Table’ event where we gave students a free lunch, and they got to sit down with each other and talk about anything they wanted to,” said Franc. “We also just previously hosted the ‘Block Party’ in which students came out and got to relax before the start of the semester.”

Franc feels the office brings inclusion in diversity and feels it to be the vital component of the university.

Learning to live with a new roommate may be a difficult adjustment for some students.

Students face conflicts such as dividing responsibilities and getting along with their roommate. In order to help ease this process, University Housing offers students the option to sign a roommate agreement.

“The roommate agreement is a written agreement that establishes certain duties between the two roommates,” explained Aaron Wilkinson, a senior mathematics major and St. Tammany Hall resident. “They both sign this agreement at the beginning of the fall semester along with their RA. They also make it clear how they feel about things such as noise level, room temperature, sharing items, etc. Basically, both people sit down and establish clear terms.”

The agreement is designed to reduce the possibility of conflict by addressing common problems between roommates. The agreement encourages students to resolve conflict in a mature fashion.

“Some of the most common problems that I hear about from other residents is having too many guests in the dorms, too much noise, going to bed too late, disagreements about having guests of the opposite sex over and a lack of communication,” said Wilkinson. “Pretty much every roommate conflict that I have heard of from other residents boils down to one or all of these issues. Many were unable to resolve these issues, and the relationship broke down. They simply could not understand each other because they never made an effort to.”

Michael DeGraauw, a sophomore history major and a resident of Twelve Oaks Hall, shared how the roommate agreement affected his experience with his roommate and helped

make his first year of college better.

“Last year, the roommate experience itself was actually a lot of fun,” explained DeGraauw.

“Filling out the roommate agreement and having the RAs come to the rooms and inspect them actually helped me bond with my roommate.

After we filled out the roommate agreement and went through inspections, we began talking to each other more which led to us starting to become friends. The most important thing to remember is that you need to talk to your roommate to try to understand him or her.”

Among the residents that he knew personally, Wilkinson emphasized that the ones who filled out the roommate agreement were more likely to live cooperatively.

“One of the benefits of completing the roommate agreement is more accountability,” explained Wilkinson. “Both people have sat down and made it clear that they are responsible for sticking to what they wrote on the agreement.

They have also allotted certain duties between each other. If a disagreement ever occurs or someone does not do what they said they would, you can contact the RA and show them the document.”

Wilkinson feels that communication is essential if students wish to have a peaceful living arrangement.

“If y’all do not talk to each other, that’s a recipe for disaster,” discussed Wilkinson.

“The roommate agreement can serve as a good starting point in regards to that.”

Beginning your relationship with a new roommate by filling out a roommate agreement can also have a positive effect on your college experience.

Printed copies of the roommate agreement are available in the Housing Office located in Pride Hall and on the University Housing page on the university website.

PHI KAPPA PHI – Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society is hosting the 18th Annual Homecoming Intramural Quiz Bowl Tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 2-6 p.m. in the Student Union Theatre. Rebooting... fix the campus Wi-Fi A lot of things about this university are truly amazing like the Monday through Thursday school week, free student admission to all sporting events and Gerard Borne the numerous Staff Reporter events held by student organizations but one thing that needs to improve is the campus Wi-Fi. In some buildings, the Wi-Fi reception is reliable and strong, but in halls like D Vickers, the Wi-Fi needs drastic improvement. I have had countless professors have to stop class and refresh their computers and laptops to get

Personally I would not have a problem with the Wi-Fi if it did not interrupt lecture time, I am tired of seeing my professors have to pause class time due to the internet connection. Professors are having to slash through lecture time just to make up for the internet malfunctions.

One solution to fixing this minor issue is to install more Wi-Fi routers in each hall and building. School is too technology-based to take a step back and use less technology.

Literally everything is on the internet in all of my courses.

The Wi-Fi is just too slow in some halls to base all of the classwork around the internet.

Now some of the students do overreact and complain

because they can not access social media in certain places, but that is not to my concern.

My concern is when it cuts into class time, I am their for an hour and fifteen minutes to learn not to see professors have to try and reboot the Wi-Fi. Another solution is that each building and area on campus can have their own separate Wi-Fi. Southeastern uses one main hub as its Wi-Fi, if each building had its separate Wi-Fi and passwords then we would not have to see professors go at it everyday with the internet.

Yes, this may cost more but I am very positive that every student will donate or help with a fundraiser to make this a reality. Have a drive where each student who donates will get a

t-shirt for donating money for the universities Wi-Fi or start a GoFundMe to raise funds for the new Wi-Fi. Students are tired of the everyday struggles that are faced just to log in to Moodle.

Yes, my solutions may be a little expensive but students will be willing to help raise money. T-shirt drives are like drawing flies to honey for college students, nothing excites a college student more than t-shirts. If you center and focus the fundraiser around something the student body likes and has passion in then the outcome will be better.

Pumpkin season has arrived For many fall is their favorite time of the year When leaves start to change brown and there’s a cool crisp smell in the air, fall is coming right around the corner.

Fall is one of the best times of the year, with so many reasons to be smitten with the season.

The best thing about the fall season is Gabrielle Wood Halloween. Fall creates Staff Reporter a spooky atmosphere that is exciting for some, like myself, who love to be scared.

My favorite thing to do is watch variety of scary movies. Throughout the season, I watch many scary movies during my free time and with friends. It is our favorite way to spend time together.

Halloween has some of the best movies such as “Hocus Pocus,” “Halloweentown,” “Twitches” and “Casper.” This is one of the best things to look forward to because networks don’t play these movies all year long.

It is also the perfect time to go crazy decorating my room with Halloween

decorations. I love to decorate for any occasion or excuse, and Halloween is the perfect time to get creative.

There are so many ways to get festive with fall by having decorative lights, jump-scare decorations, and pumpkins.

There are also many stores like Walmart and Target that have special sections for Halloween items.

There is always something to do during this time of the year, whether it is visiting haunted mansions with friends or going to scary corn mazes. Haunted mansions are one of the exciting things to do this fall. There are always some local or, my favorite, the Mortuary in New Orleans.

Pumpkin patches are another Halloween activity that I have enjoyed visiting with my family ever since I was a little girl. Decorating pumpkins is another tradition that I love participating in every Halloween. Pinterest has many ideas and creative ways to make pumpkins look spooky enough for Halloween.

As a kid, I always loved dressing up as my favorite movie character or any costume that I could find. My favorite dressing up as Velma from “ScoobyDoo” because it is a show that I have been obsessed with. Halloween provides the perfect time for kids, and even adults, to express themselves and really get creative for one night for the whole year.

Another great aspect of Halloween is the candy. Many people find this night acceptable to eat as much as they want without the judgment of others. Candy is always on a discount during this time of the year, and it is an excuse for lovers who have a sweet tooth to splurge. Kids also get to go trick-or-treating which is a great way to get candy for free. Now that I’m older, I like handing out the candy.

Fall has so many reasons to celebrate and enjoy the season, the biggest being Halloween. Everyone should be excited about this quickly-approaching holiday.

The Hammond Regional Arts Center is expanding its Zen Aesthetics exhibition to include the Japanese Tea Ceremony.

The event will be held on Sunday, Sept.

29. Currently, the arts center is displaying works from Rosemary Goodell, an artist whose work is heavily influenced by Japan.

According to the display at HRAC, Japanese Aesthetics are a set of ancient ideals that include wabi, transient and stark beauty, and sabi, the beauty of natural beauty and aging.

Tara Bennett, media coordinator for HRAC, explained that the tea ceremony is more than just about drinking tea.

“The Japanese Tea Ceremony is a choreographic ritual of preparing and serving Japanese green tea, called matcha, together with traditional Japanese sweets, which balances with the bitter taste of the tea,” said Bennett. “Preparing tea in this ceremony means pouring all one’s attention into the predefined movements. ” Serving tea is an art and a spiritual discipline in Japanese culture.

“Serving tea is an art and a spiritual discipline in Japan and aesthetic contemplation is required,” explained Bennett. “The Japanese Tea Ceremony is steeped in Zen Buddhist thought and practice while combining art, appreciation of nature and social interaction. Many of the concepts of Zen Aesthetics are applied to the process of the Japanese Tea Ceremony right down to the placement of the tea utensils.”

Participants can also expect to learn traditional Japanese customs all while enjoying tea. The event will be

conducted by Naomi Yorder, Japan Society of New Orleans board member.

“During the ceremony, guests will enjoy tea and sweets while learning the conduct and etiquette of traditional Japanese tea custom,” shared Bennett. “The tea will be carefully prepared by Conservation Biologist Naomi Yoder, who studied Chado, the Way of Tea, at the Urasenke School. After the demonstration, Yoder will host a group discussion.”

Goodell’s work is mainly influenced by Japanese art, line, flat color, pattern and asymmetrical balance. Bennett explained that the main intention of organizing the event was to offer experiences beyond the exhibition.

“Rosemary Goodell’s artwork was heavily influenced by her time in Japan,” said Bennett. “So, we wanted to offer enriching experiences such as the tea ceremony as expanded programming for the exhibition. With the purposeful intent of the tea ceremony, and its intricate relation with art and aesthetics, it is another way to experience art at the Hammond Regional Arts Center.”

Bennett feels that the event is an opportunity to learn about a different culture without going to Japan.

“People will get to learn an age-old Japanese tradition that still is popular today without the need for a passport,” expressed Bennett.

The 10th annual Brews Art Festival will be organized on Sept. 27 from 5-9 p.m.

Local breweries around Hammond will be sampling some of their finest craft beers in an event organized by the Hammond Regional Arts Center.

Tara Bennett, media coordinator for HRAC, described the history of the Brews Art Festival and what the event entails.

“Brews Arts Festival is a signature Hammond Regional Arts Center event that began in 2010,” shared Bennett. “The Brews Arts Festival is designed to support HRAC’s important work in the community while promoting an appreciation of craft beer.”

be participating in the Brews Festival and some changes that were made in the past year to the festival.

“Beginning in 2018, the focus of Brews Arts Festival has shifted to focus primarily on local breweries,” said Bennett. “These breweries are Gnarley Barley Brewing Company, Bayou Teche Brewing, Southern Craft Brewing Company, Tin Roof Brewing Company, Urban South Brewery, Great Raft Brewing, Port Orleans Brewing Company, Parish Brewing Company, and Low Road Brewing.”

Breweries try to present their highest quality work to attendees.

“A lot of the compliments we get about the festival always centers on its quality because the HRAC focuses on bringing the best experience to its attendees every year,”

explained Bennett. “Not only that but our patrons also enjoy the quantity. One year I had a patron tell me he thought we were the best brew festival compared to others because his glass was never empty. Anyone who enjoys having a good time can look forward to Brews Arts Festival. There are always new brews they may have never tried before. And with the demonstrations, vendors, food pairings and music, it’s a very good time for a Friday night.”

Ben Bell, an instructor of library science, thinks the Brews Art Festival gives an opportunity to experience local culture.

“There are so many benefits this festival has to offer,” shared Bell. “One of them is that everyone gets to experience a local festival with the local community. You are also benefiting local art and a local art center when you attend this

festival, overall its an amazing event. There is local food this festival has to offer which is absolutely amazing. There is also great local craft beer and overall it is a really good event for the Hammond Regional Arts Center.”

Bell described what his favorite aspect of the festival is.

“I love to see everyone having a good time and drinking local craft beer,” said Bell. “The community really comes together to enjoy a local festival. It is always an engaged audience that attends these events that the arts center host.”

HRAC members get a discounted ticket price of $25, ticket prices until Sept. 26 are $30 and the day of the event prices will increase to $35, for more information regarding this event visit HRAC’s website.

1984 to 2019: Is Big Brother still watching?

70 years after its original publication, George Orwell’s dystopian novel “1984” is still ingrained within our popular culture.

Written in 1949, the book centers around a man named Winston Smith who lives in the totalitarian futuristic country named Oceania in the year 1984. Oceania is one of three superstates left in the world which is ruled by the English Socialist Party, referred to in the book as Ingsoc.

Smith works for the party, and the world that he lives in is very controlled.

There is a specific way that all people are required to talk, and they are prevented from partaking in the many freedoms we enjoy.

Throughout the course of the book, Smith starts to wonder about the past before the revolution that led to the creation of Oceania and questions the state. He also participates in more activities that are deemed illegal by the

party, such as having an affair with a coworker. Eventually, he has some encounters with leaders of the state who crush his spirit and show him that the state is going to win in the end.

Natasha Whitton, an professor of English and freshman English coordinator, explained the deeper themes of the novel.

“Orwell was thinking of the social contract, which writers and thinkers had been playing with for several years before he wrote the novel,” said Whitton. “Basically, what is it that you give up as an individual when you agree to be apart of a society. In this book, he is showing that sometimes that too much individual freedom can be given up.”

One major themes of the novel is personal freedom and how much control the state should have over an individual.

“The book asks if infringing about personal freedoms is something that the state should do,” explained Whitton.

“The tagline of ‘1984,’ what most

people remember, is ‘Big Brother is watching you.’ This is seen on many of the large screens that are a part of everyone’s homes and public spaces which sends the message that people cannot have private thoughts. What sort of benefits come from this system? Is the price too high?”

Orwell wrote the book thinking about the rise of communism after World War II in 1945. It was not yet clear at that time that the western countries opposed communism. So, Orwell wrote the story to warn the West against it.

“These totalitarian states that arose in the aftermath of World War II took away lots of personal freedoms to the point where most of the population lived in abject poverty,” explained Whitton.

“In most of the countries that adopted communism, there was this atmosphere of great fear of the state similar to what we see in the novel. Orwell was trying to think about what some of the results of these policies would be. So in ‘1984,’ he was imagining extreme versions of these governments.”

Dance department to showcase talent in Fanfare GABRIELLE WOOD Staff Reporter

A vision comes to life through the production of the university’s dance department.

As a part of Fanfare, one of the dances that will be showcased from the dance department will be “Missing... have you seen her?” This dance will be directed by Keith Costa, director of dance.

Fanfare is the university’s month-long celebration of the arts during October. The festival features over 50 different events such as films, concerts, literary readings, theater productions, dance, and many more.

Costa explained his artistic idea behind the dance and what it was about.

“It is about the idea of how people and things go missing in your life as well as if they choose to leave or was forced to leave,” explained Costa.

With every dance, there is a reason behind it.

The dance production derived from the emotions of Costa who further explained his reasoning.

“It came from this artistic place in my head where I saw a very large white wall that separated where I needed to be from where I was both physically and emotionally,” stated Costa.

“The set-piece that we dance on is an 8-ft-tall by 24-ft-wide white wooden wall, and behind

it are video projects of ideas that support the choreography which was created by myself and students, Alaura Cervini and Stephanie Harris.

The inspiration is further defined by the entire contemporary dance concert being performed in all white until we see all colors unfold at the end of the work as a metaphor.”

Costa explained why students should attend and see all the hard work that the dancers have put into this dance for the past few weeks.

“I think that every student loses something in their life so this contemporary dance concert challenges them to think of the person or item that was lost and will they ever recover it again,” explained Costa.

Costa discussed the effort to get ready for the Fanfare premiere.

“We had to be very focused for this rehearsal schedule since we only had five weeks to prepare the choreography and set the contemporary dance concert into production mode under a very tight timeline since we are part of Fanfare on Oct. 1, but so far we have succeeded,” stated Costa.

The dance concert will be performed on Oct. 1-2 at the Vonnie Borden Theatre at 7:30 p.m. as a part of the Fanfare activities.

Buffy Baker, a junior elementary education major, attended the Louisiana Renaissance Festival in recent years and described her experience there.

“RenFest is basically a bunch of people who enjoy fantasy, history, sci-fi and all kinds of other stuff coming together and appreciating it all through shows, food, music, and camaraderie,” explained Baker. “My whole family has been going to the RenFest for years. So, now I associate it with my family spending

quality time together. I also love all the different music and food there.”

Out of numerous shows and performances featured at RenFest, Baker feels that one show in particular stands out.

“My favorite activity is the ‘Robin Hood Presents...’ show,” said Baker. “They let children and adults be a part of their show, and I have basically grown up being in the show and enjoying it. I look forward to it every year.”

The Renaissance Festival has a wide variety of activities throughout its month of operation.

Grace Butzman, a senior communication major, has also attended the festival in the past

and outlined what students can expect if they wish to attend.

“They have a schedule for each day of the festival listing the different shows and acts you can see,” described Butzman. “These acts include things like jousting, magic shows, juggling, comedy acts and more. They also have various foods and shopping booths that sell crafts and other Renaissance-related things that you can buy. These activities and events go on through the whole month of November.”

Butzman also described what she enjoyed about previous Renaissance fairs that she has attended.

“I liked that it actually felt like you went back in time to a Renaissance-era town,” said

Butzman. “The people who are running the festival would dress and act like they lived during the time period of the Renaissance and would stay in character all day. They also had amazing types of food. My two favorites were the Greek food and frozen cheesecake.”

For students that have not been, Butzman recommended that this festival is something they should experience.

“I think that other students should go to experience the fun of it,” said Butzman. “Plus, it’s not far from Hammond. So, if you’re looking for something fun to do in the month of November, it’s a must.”

Alumnus baseball player earns two pitching awards GERARD BORNE STAFF REPORTER

Corey Gaconi, an alumnus pitcher, earned two accolades for his performance in the 2019 regular season. Gaconi brought home the 2019 Louisiana Sports Writer Pitcher of the Year and the 2018-2019 SLU Male Student-Athlete of the Year award.

The university baseball team finished with a 33-27 record in 2019 and wrapped up the season with a 6-3 loss to the University of Central Arkansas in the Southland Conference Tournament, Gaconi earned these two awards after finishing his last season of eligibility.

He is the 10th baseball player in program history to bring home the award given by the university and first baseball player since Jameson Fisher earned the award in 2015-2016.

Gaconi explained how it felt to win the awards at the end of his final season.

“It was pretty awesome to win both accolades,” shared Gaconi. “We did not finish the season how we wanted to. To finish with both of those awards at the end of the season was pretty awesome. It feels great when other people notice all of the hard work you put into the regular season.”

Gaconi was inspired by his father to play baseball.

“I have played baseball since I was three years old,” explained Gaconi. “When I was growing up, I played as much as possible. I played in numerous different leagues just so I could keep playing the game yearround. My dad was the person who inspired me to play baseball. He was my coach growing up my whole childhood and always pushed me to do the best that I possibly can.”

The Metairie native was crushed when he did not initially get drafted to a Major League Baseball team.

“I felt like I had a pretty good chance to get drafted,” said Gaconi.

“I really did not know what to do for two or three weeks after the draft.

Everyone told me just to keep throwing and preparing in case any team gave me a call. Eventually, I gave up and started throwing altogether. I went through the university’s amazing sales program and planned to do something along those lines. I started to make my resume, but then Coach Riser called me and said that the Mets were interested in me, and I got a call the next day from them to play baseball.”

Gaconi shared how his time playing baseball for the university prepared him for the minor leagues and his favorite university baseball experiences.

“Southeastern did a great job preparing me for different in-game challenges,” stated Gaconi. “My

Gaconi shared what he does during the off season to stay in shape and how he stays physically active.

“I usually go back and forth to

Southeastern to throw a couple of times a week,” stated Gaconi. “I work out and do a lot of stuff to stay in shape so I am prepared for spring training next season. On the side, I teach pitching lessons to kids who want to learn how to pitch or need help with pitching.”

Nearly a quarter way into their 2019 season, the Lady Lions volleyball team have already surpassed last year’s overall record.

After ending last year’s season with a record of 2-27, the team is now 3-7 overall in the season after its victory against Jackson State University on Sept. 14.

Jeremy White, head coach of volleyball, feels the team is going in the right direction.

“I am very happy with where we are at the moment,” said White. “We are a growing program, and the girls have made a great effort to change the program. We are competing well against some really great teams. We have not quite closed out as many as we would have liked, but it is great that we have already eclipsed last year’s win total this early into the season, and we are moving in the right direction.”

After last season, the coaching staff worked on making several improvements to the team.

“Our big focus as been on a culture change as well as a heavy focus on technical training,” explained White. “We are making a big effort to improve our volleyball skills across the board. With this, also instilling an ability to come and complete to win. I feel that the program in the past has sort of focused on competing not to lose.”

Highlights of Bennett’s career GERARD BORNE Staff Reporter

On Saturday, Sept. 21 the university inducted Bryan Bennett into the Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame.

A native of Los Angeles, California, Bennett finished his university football career in the top five of all-time career passing yards.

Bennett talked about how much he enjoyed his career at the university.

“I loved playing here at Southeastern,” explained Bennett. “Southeastern and the Hammond community really opened up their arms to me after coming from Oregon. I loved every second of every game that I played here at Southeastern.

My time here was really special and I cherished every moment while I was here.”

Before making a career in football, Bennett played track and basketball as well.

“I started playing football when I was 11 years old,” stated Bennett. “The first ever team I played for was the North Valley Golden Bears in the Los Angeles area. I played every sport at least for one year. But in high school, I was a track, football and basketball type of guy.”

Bennett transferred to the university after playing two full seasons at the University of

Oregon.

“There was a couple different factors in my decision to transfer,” stated Bennett. “When I was looking for places to go Southeastern was at the top of my list because I knew a lot of the coaches here. The coaches had a good track history. I felt like they recruited me well and it just really worked out well that I started playing here.”

Now a quarterback for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League, Bennett shared how his playing days at the university prepared him for the CFL. “One of the biggest things I got to come here and play,” said Bennett. “I really got a good opportunity to come here and get good in-game experience.

I got the chance to get film put out there. Once I put some film out there, it showed players and coaches that I had what it takes to play at the next level. I will be forever grateful for the opportunities that Southeastern gave me.”

Bennett explained how it feels to be in the record books for the university.

“It is an amazing accomplishment,” stated Bennett. “It’s really awesome to be able to say I did that. It was great just to get to come here and get that experience.

Bennett shared what his favorite memory was while playing at the university.

“I had a lot of good memories when I played here,” commented Bennett. “One of my favorite memories would have to be my junior year against Sam Houston State, it was a mustwin game in the playoffs. My second favorite memory was playing at home against a really talented McNeese State football

team, and we got the job done and picked up the win.”

Bennett explained how he likes playing football in the CFL and how it was different than American football.

“I love playing up there,” stated Bennett. “The only thing that took some getting used to was the rules that they have in Canada. They have a bigger field which took some getting used to.”

Bennett is currently ranked fifth on the all-time passing yards list with 3,165 total yards and is second in averaged passing yards per game with an average of 226.1 yards, Bennett’s next game will be against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Oct. 5 at 6 p.m.

Manuel returns as an assistant pitching coach JACOB SUMMERVILLE Opinions Editor

An alumni pitcher’s lifelong passion for baseball lead him back to coach at the university starting this upcoming season.

Whether it was through video games or watching television, for Kaleb Manuel, interim assistant baseball coach and pitching coach, the sport has always been prominent to him. Manuel pitched for the Lions during the 2012 and 2013 seasons, and after graduating in

2013, came back as a volunteer for the 2016-2018 seasons.

Starting his collegiate career at Louisiana State UniversityEunice, Manuel decided to transfer over to Southeastern at the end of his sophomore season.

“I came to my first showcase over here and fell in love with Hammond,” explained Manuel.

“It’s a perfect college town.

I guess I was good enough at Eunice, and Southeastern recruited me, and I think it took me a week and a half, and I

made my decision between this school and a couple other schools.”

After graduating and volunteering for the Lions for three seasons, Manuel took his coaching skills to the high school level for a season.

“I thought I wanted to be a high school coach right away,” said Manuel. “Did that, and I said, ‘Ah, let me get into college,’ and then so, I spent three years here as the volunteer – absolutely loved it. Being under the guy that’s a mentor to me, Coach Riser, he’s an unbelievable man. Last year, I did high school, and came back when the pitching job opened up.”

During his three seasons as a volunteer for the Lions, Manuel learned skills ranging from field maintenance to college recruitment, the latter he still uses in his new job role.

“Coach Riser did a good

job of introducing me to the recruiting and all that to where now when I’m back at this, I’ve already done it before,” shared Manuel. “There’s no more learning – I just come in and get my job done.”

As a pitcher, Manuel made it to the Southland Conference Championship twice, and during his three-year tenure, the team went to two regional championships.

Returning as a pitching coach, he hopes to bring the team further than before.

“Hopefully we can get past that regional, maybe finally win me a ring,” said Manuel.

“This’ll be my sixth year over here. I’m gonna go out and at least win a ring.”

In his position as an assistant pitching coach, Manuel strives to build the pitchers into fastpaced players.

“I want batters getting really frustrated that our pitchers are

going really fast,” discussed Manuel. “That’s why most of this past year watching College World Series and all of that, those teams that end up in the finals, Vandy and Michigan, that’s what they’re all about: just being very aggressive. I want us to be like our offense is and be very aggressive.”

A highlight of Manuel’s job is the camaraderie built among the coaching staff.

“I know that there’s some coaching staffs where guys are maybe 25, 30 years apart from each other, and they don’t even like hanging out, but our staff is full of good guys that want to do things the right way,” shared Manuel.

Coming back from one season hiatus on the collegiate level, most of the team’s lineup is new to Manuel.

“Two things I tell the kids all the time: just have fun being out here and get after it,” explained Manuel. “I’m not asking you to throw 95 or hit the ball a mile – just go. That’s what this program got built on last year. In high school, the team had an unbelievable year, fell just short, but that’s the two things. That’s what everybody needs to understand is you go out there and have fun and get after it.”

Along with “Silver Sneaker,” “Barre” and “Zumba,” the Pennington Student Activity Center is also hosting a group fitness course called “Yoga Flow.”

“Yoga Flow” is one of the 11 group fitness courses offered this semester.

Julia Wallace, instructor of “Yoga Flow,” explained what the class entails and what students should expect when taking the course. “’Yoga Flow’ is a Vinyasa style class developing flexibility

in balance, integrating breath into every movement,” shared Wallace. “Expect a flow of sun salutations that will increase heart rate, develop strength, and improve balance. ‘Yoga Flow’ is designed for all fitness levels.”

She has been teaching for five years now.

The yoga instructor shared her experience teaching her first course.

“My first time teaching yoga was at North Cypress Fitness Center, and I was not quite prepared even though I had taken years of yoga classes prior to that point,” said Wallace.

“I was very nervous. But with practice comes polish, and you learn to overcome fears, and sometimes you just go with the flow with the class.”

Wallace loves teaching and also embraces the challenges that comes while teaching.

“Several things I love about

teaching yoga is that I get to do the class along with everyone else,” stated Wallace. “It is a challenge for me to develop and create new and exciting yoga classes that are different every time you step into the studio.

I also like the social aspect of being in a class, seeing familiar faces, getting to know the people that are usually of all ages and just sharing some life experiences.”

Wallace feels that she is still a student of yoga herself and hopes to improve her knowledge of yoga.

“I am always learning new things and new modifications,” said Wallace. “The movement in the breath that you hear in

class is not something you can experience through a YouTube video. The energy in class is awesome. You might walk into the yoga studio feeling low or stressed out and by the time you walk out, you’re a brand new invigorated lively person.”

Jason Templet, a coordinator of competitive sports, explained what he thinks the benefits are for “Yoga Flow.”

“There are so many benefits that this course offers to anyone who participates,” stated Templet. “Yoga is a fullbody workout that really helps the body as a whole. While stretching out your core, it also helps with your cardio in working out your heart.”

Templet shared why he feels the course is one of the best the activity center has to offer.

“It’s a class that draws everyone’s attention,” shared Templet. “Everyone enjoys ‘Yoga Flow’ because of the instructor Julia. She’s a good teacher that drives everyone to do their best.”

“Yoga Flow” is taught every Tuesday and Thursday night from 6:30-7:20 p.m. and Saturday from 11-11:50 p.m. in Room 225 at the Pennington Student Activity Center.

‘Storm 30’ adds new aspects to routine JACOB SUMMERVILLE Opinions Editor

A football pregame tradition has continued to evolve with the start of the new season.

Thirty minutes before kickoff, “Storm 30” is a pep rally that starts in Friendship Circle and migrates into Strawberry Stadium. The Lionettes and the Spirit of the Southland Marching Band and Colorguard perform as they march through Friendship Circle.

This season, the Victory Bell was incorporated into the routine.

Lindsey Owens, assistant athletic director of marketing and student promotions, explained that the new addition was voted on by the University Traditions Committee.

“We felt like the Victory Bell is such a vital component of game day, and it’s been parked on the turf for home games,” shared Owens. “As an institution, it was important to let others see the bell up close and have it recognized. So, now it lives in Friendship Circle until ‘Storm 30’ where our Southeastern ROTC walks the Victory Bell into the south end zone of Strawberry Stadium.”

A student group named the “MANEiacs” has returned to the “Storm 30” line up.

Owens said that these students are in the routine to enhance the spirit of the occasion.

“This group is exclusively made-up of Southeastern students who showed interest in extending their passion and love for Southeastern Athletics,” said Owens.

Since fans are encouraged to follow the procession into Strawberry Stadium 30 minutes before the official start time, traffic at the entrance gate during kickoff is lessened.

“Students will be able to take advantage of getting a better seat in the student section as well as get free giveaways, if applicable, as there are

limited quantities available,” explained Owens.

While the event has been around for years, Owens says Athletics is wanting to raise awareness of the tradition.

“This is a traditional activity for Southeastern and athletics, but we felt it was time to communicate the purpose and idea to those who may be new to campus or have just joined us on game day.”

Derek Stoughton, director of athletic bands, shared that one difference he noticed in the performance is that the band now follows behind the cheerleaders and university fire truck instead of leading the parade.

According to Stoughton, the first home game presented challenges for the band with it being some member’s first time.

“There are always a lot of new folks who are joining us for the first time, and we haven’t settled into a normal routine yet,” said Stoughton. “There is always a lot of excitement and energy in the air, and you have to constantly be reminding your people to stay focused, remember what we’ve practiced, and execute everything to the highest level possible.”

Overall, Stoughton is proud of the way the first performance went.

“Everything that we did was done with a high success level,” shared Stoughton. “That being said, we’re always working on improving our sounds, getting better on our first notes and remaining focused throughout the entire day.

However, I am very proud of our group and thought that they performed excellently all day.”

Fans can witness “Storm 30” at every home football game, and the next home game is scheduled for Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. against the Picuted are the “MANEiacs” and the cheerleaders performing during “Storm 30” at the first home game of the season.

Excel in foreign languages with Mango Learning online classes GABRIELLE WOOD Staff Reporter

Online resources are available for students who want to learn new languages.

Mango Language is a course where students can enroll and study many different languages.

This software is available for students to have an in-depth learning outside of their classroom environment. The objective of introducing this program is to help students increase their cultural knowledge.

Dr. Lucia Harrison, director of international initiatives, discussed further what a Mango Languages course entails.

“Mango Languages is an online language learning resource offering courses in over 70 foreign languages, several foreign films, specialty courses such as Legal and Medical Spanish, Business Mandarin and over 17 specialized English as a Second Language (ESL) courses,” said Harrison. “Its purchase was possible, thanks to a collaborative grant between the Department of World Languages MISA

Mango Languages can be accessed on and off-campus. Students can create an account anonymously or have a designated login so that their information is automatically saved.

Students can also keep a track of what they have and have not completed in their course. Some university classes also require its students to create a free account for the course.

“Everyone with web access can use this product, including those not currently enrolled in a foreign language course, thus making the resources increasingly popular for students learning a new language for professional,

organizations and Project P.U.L.L. I also help co-advise NPHC and Project P.U.L.L. I make sure these organizations are up to date with communications about upcoming events, networking and leadership development opportunities.”

Hawkins explained what changes MISA has made in the past few semesters.

“In the past two years, MISA has implemented more programming that is inclusive and intentional,” shared Hawkins. “We put on events that target more than our required areas. Our events aren’t just fun but educational. We are shifting to more a diverse and inclusive way of programming. Be

Hawkins was involved on campus while being an undergraduate student.

“I attended Southeastern in undergrad,” stated Hawkins.

“In undergrad, I was a pretty active student on campus. I was involved in Greek Life and other organizations like Project P.U.L.L. and NAACP I actually worked for MISA for a semester in 2016.”

Students can learn more about MISA’s services, organizations and events through the OSE page on the university website.

Considering the questions raised by the book are still relevant, Whitton feels it is important for students to read the novel.

“I would reread ‘1984’ because it is a precursor to many of the ideas we see play out in our media today. Several movies such as ‘The Truman Show’ and ‘Minority Report’ have played around with similar themes,”

said Whitton. “Also, the debate about how our technology now provides endless amounts of data on every person can be a little frightening. The question that is being asked is the same one posed by Orwell 70 years ago: Are we willing to give up these freedoms for the added convenience our technology provides us?”

“The team vibe has been very positive so far,” described White. “There are times where some of our girls have been frustrated due to the amount of information we are throwing at them. For the most part, however, the atmosphere that I get from the team is extremely positive. They have been working very hard so far this year and have had a great attitude about making changes and improvements.”

Compared to previous seasons, White believes that the team is now being held to a higher standard due to these improvements.

“The Tulane match was a huge win for us, the

kids really enjoyed that and had a lot of fun doing it,” said White. “At the same time, we have had games where even though we were not competing very well, we were not able to secure a win. A lot of that goes back to that lingering attitude of competing not to lose. So, the vibe fluctuates depending on the game but right now, the vibe is fairly positive.”

White hopes that the student-athletes continue to grow and stay healthy.

“Above all, I just want to make sure our kids stay healthy and in shape,” described White. “That is my only really concern about the team at the moment. I love the team. They work hard and they are always trying to get better. It is really nice to see the growth we have already had so far this season not only in terms of our athletic progress, but the kids progress as individuals and as people.”

Some of the languages that Mango Languages offers are Spanish, French, Japanese and English.

The software has all of the languages that the university requires students to be enrolled for their respective degree program.

There are many different ways for students to be able to practice the language that they choose or are required to learn. Through Mango Languages, students are able to study over conversation, grammar and vocabulary skills.

There are also tools to learn about each culture, whether it’s through films, food or clothing.

“An important component of Mango Languages is the emphasis on cultural material related to the target languages,” discussed Harrison. “The program comes with multiple,

culturally specific tutorials based on areas in which a given language is spoken.”

Some activities require students to learn by writing, listening and speaking. This provides a structured learning environment and students are able to review each assignment after finishing to have an understanding of what they need to further work on.

“Implementing Mango Languages will help our students to become better, more well rounded, and culturally sensitive second language learners,” said Harrison. “We, the faculty of the Department of World Languages and Cultures, encourage our students and the community at large to be fluent in at least one foreign language whether it is one offered at Southeastern or not.”
