Hello, Lions. My name is Megan Simon, and I’m the new Editor in Chief of The Lion’s Roar. When I’m not on the soccer field kicking balls with the Lady Lions Soccer team, you will mostly find me at The Lion’s Roar, striving to get the paper out to you every Tuesday.

We have a lot of cool issues planned for the year to come and hope we can continue the tradition of being one of the best ways students can get information about what is happening

The Office of Student Publications consists of both the newspaper and yearbook staff. While the newspaper is produced once a week during regular semesters and once a month over the summer, the yearbook, Le Souvenir, comes out around Homecoming Week each October.

As for this magazine, the staff, including myself, aimed to bring interesting features to the table. We wanted to write stories that apply to not just freshmen, but upperclassmen too. These pages contain information about parking, workout advice and even a feature about the school’s nursing program.

A WALK IN THE SHOES OF THE LION’S ROAR STAFF

Each turnaround happens swiftly and rigorously. Editors navigate through all the bumps in the road and keep moving till everything is done Monday night (sometimes really late!).

Once photos and stories are turned in, the hectic part of the process begins: editing.

This exasperating process involves more than checking for spelling errors or misplaced commas. In ensuring the credibility of the paper, the entire staff works to make sure all names, times, locations and other factual details are correct. Editors oversee the process and are responsible for the accuracy, clarity and brevity of every component of the paper. Through the intense weekly processing editors learn to be more efficient and to question everything.

Over the span of an editor’s career, they will have the opportunity to interview a plethora of people from different backgrounds. The interview process is necessary for almost every article, as it is the reporter’s duty to seek out information from an expert.

Some people interviewed for this publication in the past have ranged from professors and university presidents, to actors and actresses known around the world and to athletes that are now in the pros. After years of interviewing all types of people, shyness goes out the window. As a result, reporters highly sharpen and expand their communication skills.

The greatest thing editors will take away from the job is well-developed leadership skills. When a reporter transitions into an editor, they learn how much planning and

preparation goes on behindthe-scenes when reporters are out completing assignments.

While many are writing stories, editors are figuring out what stories will go on what pages, which photos are print worthy and what fonts the headlines will be.

Unfortunately, one of the downfalls of being a student journalist is the potential for errors. There will be errors, and when something is done wrong, the responsibility falls on the editors, regardless of who wrote the story and who did a poor job editing it. As you grow in the position you realize it’s not about who is to blame; you correct mistakes and keep moving. The closer you get to interdependence,

the more you can accept that your co-workers are flawed, but they have strengths as well—strengths you need to produce a great newspaper.

Teamwork and interpersonal communication are just a few of the highly transferable life skills learned on the job.

All in all, being a part of The Lion’s Roar teaches many lessons, but mostly it teaches all staff members that time is something you cannot waste. It teaches staff members how to prioritize and delegate what they have to do and when they have to do it, because without that lesson there is little to no chance of survival in the fast-paced world of student journalism.

The job of a student journalist requires a great deal of hard work, sacrifice and growth as an individual.

Reporters have to adjust to the fast-pace of a weekly newsroom, stay up to date on community news and campus events, learn to manage their time effectively and meet individual deadlines so that the newspaper comes out every Tuesday morning. While the student reporter position is difficult, the challenge escalates immensely for the editors.

This job helps students develop a multitude of journalism skills, the more involved in the process you become, the more you develop an array of life skills that can apply to any career or life path.

Working as an editor not only allows you to delve into the entire newspaper production process, but it also forces you to develop teamwork and interpersonal communication skills. Editors quickly learn that producing a quality newspaper each week requires group collaboration. Being a successful editor requires humility and selflessness. You have to take the focus off of yourself and your own abilities, and place it on the success of the newspaper as a whole.

Time management is crucial. The Lion’s Roar newspaper produces a paper nearly every Tuesday of the semester. Reporters typically have two or three days to turn in assignments. This gives editors two to three days to set up pages, ensure stories are edited, sort photos, complete their own assignments and serve as a net for any errors made by staff reporters.

Columbia Theatre is for the arts enthusiast in us all. Owned and operated by the lovely Southeastern, the Columbia Theatre was renovated and reopened in 2002. With a main seat performance hall sporting 830 spots, there is more than enough room for you and friends to go and spend an evening of entertainment there.

The pub also has the best location around. With Pita Pit as a neighbor, you can run next door between songs and get a pita and water if your heart desires. Pub hours are 8:00 a.m. through 2:00 a.m., Monday through Saturday, but they are closed on Sundays.

Live music is a given on the weekends from young bands, and you will have great food too. With Boozy Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays at 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Bloody Marias are to die for and paired with your choice of steak and eggs, omelets, grits or burritos, you will feel like heaven while recuperating from the night before. They also offer outdoor seating and you can people watch to your heart’s content while listening to the trickle of a waterfall.

NURSING RANKS TOP50

The Lion’s Roar | 9 The College of Nursing campus’ online program, granting registered nurse students the opportunity to earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing, was named 35th among the top 50 on valuecolleges.com.

Southeastern was one of three Louisiana colleges who made the rankings.

According to valuecolleges. com, University of Louisiana at Lafayette was named 16th while McNeese State University ranked 44th.

Each program was ranked based on its 20-year return on investment, per credit tuition rate and national ranking.

Despite the popular belief that online programs are not as successful as in-class prgrams research supports how online learning can be as productive as an in class setting.

“Some students thrive in the online environment;

some students prefer face to face instruction.

Research overwhelmingly supports that students learn equally well in online environments,” said dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences Ann Carruth.

“Registered nurses have real world experience when they return to get a BSN degree online.

So the online environment is a great fit because these nurses have experiences to draw on when engaging with faculty and peers. It also provides flexibility in completing coursework.”

According to valuecolleges. com, Southeastern offers “a special adult learning initiative known as CALL, Center for Adult Learning in Louisiana.”

This encourages registered nurses to earn their BSN online in three semesters. To qualify for the program, applicants must have at least one year of nursing experience. Also, the 31-credit

CALL program remains under $2,000 per semester for Louisiana students.

According to valuecolleges. com, out of state fees are waived for non-resident students, making Southeastern Louisiana a better value than advertised.

In addition, Carruth believes incoming freshmen can look forward to “recent curriculum changes to keep up with national healthcare trends.”

There are many routes an invidual can choose when pursuing a nursing career. Each category of becoming a nurse requires different levels of education.

A nurse can be a licensed practical nurse (LPN), registered nurse (RN) or nurse practitioner (NP). Practical nurses complete a one year Practical Nursing Program. Registered nurses can either have an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or a Bachelor

of Science in Nursing (BSN).

Nurse practitioners usually have a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and an area of specialization.

The main differences between a registered nurse having an Associate Degree in Nursing versus a Bachelor of Science in Nursing are education requirements, job types, job outlook and salary. Regardless, both courses to become a registered nurse require passing the National Council Licensure Examination.

For those wishing to earn a higher credential, Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees are offered through a “completer program” often online, like the CALL program.

STUDENT’S SHORT FILM WINS PRIZED EMMY Senior communication major Sarah Barbier’s psychological, romantic short film won the honored Emmy presented by the National Academy of Television and Arts and Sciences’ Suncoast Region.

Barbier won the Emmy in the “Directing” category of the competition.

“It was a short film called ‘Emma,’ and it was about a guy, Nate, whose girlfriend breaks up with him because she wants to do bigger and better things since they live in this small town,” said Barbier. “He gets depressed and goes to see this psychiatrist and starts taking medication for it. His psychiatrist tells him to go out there and explore, maybe find somebody new. He meets these two other women, both named Emma. They remind him of his ex-girlfriend. She ends up coming back in the end, but you don’t really know if these other girls were just in his head or a coincidence. It’s left up to the audience to decide.”

The concept for “Emma” originally came from her boyfriend, senior general studies major Matthew Green. They both worked together, building the story until it became fleshed out enough to become a film.

“I didn’t come up with the idea [for “Emma”],” said Barbier.

“My boyfriend, Matt Green, did. He wanted to make it into a play, but he didn’t think he could flesh it out that much. So, I took his concept, and we wrote it out together to make it into a short film.”

The film was a three week process, including writing the screenplay, fleshing out the story, storyboards, filming and finding actors. It took three days of editing and post until “Emma”

was finally completed.

Despite the enormous amount of time put into the film, Barbier found the true challenge in casting for the roles.

“The most challenging part was finding people to act in it because I couldn’t really find a lot of actors,” said Barbier. “I had to rely on my friends and help them with the lines and how I wanted them to portray the characters.”

In order to make the film, Barbier had to utilize many of the skills she learned from her classes at the university, such as editing film and framing.

“I didn’t have any idea how to edit anything before coming to Southeastern,” said Barbier. “That really helped me piece everything together in the end. Also, I learned just basic story writing, how to word things for film versus how you would write a book and how to frame correctly to make the audience see certain things.”

Barbier also learned trade secrets about filming that she was able to use in “Emma” to get the audience to see and hear what she wanted them to.

“In a book you have the option of getting inside people’s heads,” said Barbier. “Instead of just someone talking to themselves or letting the audience know through thoughts. You kind of have to make it seem more natural and figure out someone for them to talk to, which is why there is a psychiatrist, because Nate can’t really think these things.

He has to say them to someone so the audience can get all the information they need.”

In addition to creating certain characters to get the audience inside Nate’s head, Barbier also used framing skills to get the audience to pick up on the little hints she left in the film. This

Senior communication major Sarah Barbier won the Emmy in the “Director’s” category for her short film, “Emma.” She will be starting a new film project, “Fugue” in the near future. included the connections between the two girls Nate comes across and his ex-girlfriend, Emma.

“For the second Emma, she’s in a coffee shop, and she has a stack of books with her,” said Barbier. “They are all by the same author, who is the author the main character’s girlfriend really liked, so there are little hints like that that I wanted to stick out.”

Barbier hopes viewers not only put thought into the twist of an ending but also appreciate it for the love story it is.

“I hope that they [the audience] find it enjoyable and see it as both an inspirational story and love story, showing that you don’t always lose somebody forever,” said Barbier.

Barbier is currently working on another filming project titled “Fugue,” which is about a young man named Percy, dealing with his friends before and after the apocalypse. It switches from pre to post apocalypse throughout the

film, from him playing chess one minute to him trying to survive the next. The concept and story was written by graduate Cody Love.

She is currently raising money for the project on Kickstarter and will be looking for actors in the near future.

Barbier hopes to pursue a career in editing and filming in the future once she graduates. While she aspires to be a director or producer one day, she personally enjoys the editing process and intends to start a career in that first.

“My favorite part is editing, just getting all these pieces after somebody has already shot them, and you’re the one who gets to put it together and create something,” said Barbier. “You are kind of the one who writes the story.”

PROFESSORS TEST HOW EXERCISE AFFECTS PAIN PERCEPTION

By Staff Reports It is the age of pain, where researchers, doctors and psychologists alike are charting out the unknown: the relationship between pain and the human body.

Dr. Brandon Baiamonte of psychology joined forces with Dr. Daniel Hollander and Dr. Robert Kraemer in the Kinesiology Department to research the effects of exercise on pain perception.

“It is difficult to pinpoint the exact inspiration for the project because it was a collaborative effort,” said Baiamonte.

“Previous research has focused on aerobic exercise and failed to extensively study the effects of resistance exercise on pain perception, which is what we wanted to address with this current study.”

Resistance exercises mainly involve an individual engaging in workouts that include weights or applying resistance to the body.

The three-month experiment was completed during the 2015 spring semester and involved a two day process, each day separated by a week.

The first day, participants had to complete the necessary paperwork for the study.

“The protocol required participants to complete two separate days of exercise,” said Baiamonte. “On the first day, all participants were screened for any health issues by completing a medical history questionnaire.

The current study involves an intensive exercise regimen and excellent health was imperative for the safety of all participants.”

In addition to completing the medical background checks, participants had to find their three repetition maximum weights for each exercise in the circuit, which was used as a benchmark for the second day.

“The amount of weight lifted was used to estimate a one repetition maximum that will be utilized on the second day of the experiment,” said Baiamonte.

On the second day of the experiment, approximately one week after the first day, participants completed three rounds of nine different exercises. These exercises included leg presses, military presses, lateral pull downs, rows, leg extensions, planks, lunges and abdominal rollouts.

calculated from first day was used for all weighted lifts.

The circuit had a full body workout approach, requiring participants to engage in a lower body movement, followed by a core exercise and then, an upper body exercise.

Participants went through the circuit three times, each exercise requiring 12 reps.

“This circuit was completed three times and the participants completed 12 repetitions of each movement in 45 seconds with 45 seconds of rest between movements,” said Baiamonte.

Between each movement, the 24 participants were measured for heart rate and perceived exertion. In addition, pain perception and blood lactate were measured before the exercise and one minute, five minutes, and 15 minutes after completion of the entire exercise regimen.

Because exercise intensity and an elevated heart rate have been connected to changes in pain perception in previous studies, heart rate was measured with a monitor that was connected to the participant throughout the workout.

Participants’ perception of exercise intensity was measured

using The Rating of Perceived Exertion, which is a scale used to gauge how much individuals exert themselves.

Pain perception was tested by the experimenter applying pressure to the individual’s non-dominant hand’s pressure point until the pain became intolerable.

Blood lactate was measured by poking each participant’s fingertip to collect a drop a blood.

After collecting the data gathered from the experiment, Baiamonte and his colleagues found when compared to normal circumstances, an individual will be able to tolerate more pain immediately following resistance exercises.

The alteration in pain perception of an individual occurs in relation to the changes in the other factors measured in the experiment: heart rate, perception of exercise intensity and blood lactate.

Baiamonte, Hollander and Kraemer plan to continue this experiment on attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder patients who take medications that have been known to increase exercise performance and possibly altering the effects of resistance exercise on pain perception.

LIONS CUT LOOSE, FOOTLOOSE

By Heather Jewell - Staff Reporter With multiple events planned for the Fall and Spring semesters on campus, fans of the arts have much to look forward to.

Unlike the town of Bomont from the 1984 movie “Footloose,” dancing and rock music are not banned in Hammond. There is no need for Kevin Bacon to roll up in his yellow Volkswagen Bug and begin teaching students how to dance behind a barn.

Instead, Southeastern students with the desire to dance have a large selection to choose from. As a bonus, an informal presentation will be held on Tuesday, October 27 at 9:30 a.m. in the Kinesiology and Health Studies Building Dance Studio to showcase all the classes offered in the semester. Current dance students will perform pieces for each particular class, allowing hopeful registers to gauge which class they may enjoy most.

Their first performance of the season will be The Katrina Project, a piece that will be taking on an InterArts approach by fusing the elements of dance, music, theater and visual arts into its production.

There will be four choreographers, 10 dancers, three musicians playing original, live music and an original live spoken word from a poet: All will be performed on and around a massive 24 feet wide and 8 feet tall structure that has been built for The Katrina Project with a multi-media image projection as the backdrop.

According to Artistic Director Keith Costa, better known as Skip Costa, The Katrina Project is devoted to exploring the elements of how a storm is created, what is experienced during a storm and several types of repercussions that follow after it is over.

“Even though this is a bigger picture about a storm, any storm,

anywhere in the world, we will be personalizing it by taking the devastating storm of Katrina as our reference point as that affected us locally,” said Costa.

Dance students pitched the idea last year due to 2015 being the 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. One of these students was senior dance major Christa Clement-Sevin, whose family suffered the loss of her grandmother as a result of Katrina.

“The powerful thing is, [Katrina] is still having some effect on us one way or another,” said Costa.

Performances are October 15 at 9:30 a.m. and October 16 at 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. in the Vonnie Borden Theatre. General Admission will be $5 with a running time of 45 minutes and no intermission.

Returning for the second time during Fanfare will be the improvisation project, this year titled “Thinking for a Change.” The concert is devoted entirely to the art form of dance improvisation.

Along with the performance, Costa established a new departmental dance company called DPP2, Dance Performance Project 2, which is the residential departmental dance company for the dance program, devoted exclusively to improvisation. “[The concert] is devoted to ideas that we need to think about.

Whether they be social, moral, ethical, spiritual or educational based, in order for us to ask the world to start thinking again for a type of change to occur,” said Costa.

Eight to 10 choreographers and 10 dancers will be a part of this project. The performance will be held on Monday, October 12 in the Vonnie Bordon Theatre with a general admission of $5 and running time of 45 minutes with no intermission. Audience members may also be given an

Closing up the Fall semester will be the Fall 2015 Informal Concert, taking place on Tuesday December 1 in Pottle Auditorium.

The dance is being done to support World AIDS Day and all the efforts that have been conducted around the world for many years in search of a cure.

“We ask that you wear a red ribbon [for AIDS awareness] to the performance,” said Costa. “It will be a showcase of 10 cutting edge choreographers who will be enrolled in our Dance 372 Choreography and Dance 472 Advanced Choreography class.”

Fall semester as part of the Dance Minor Program and General Studies - Dance Concentration Major here at the University.

During the Spring semester, graduating seniors will have their own concert as their senior thesis project. Concert titles have not been made at this point but each choreographer will have their own theme and each concert will last approximately 30 minutes. Concerts will contain a solo, duet, trio, small ensemble dance and large ensemble dance. They will each have five dances to perform as their final Dance Thesis statement within their general studies, dance concentration degree program

offered at Southeastern.

“Currently, this is the only way to obtain a dance degree at Southeastern,” said Costa.

All concerts will be performed in March at 7:30 p.m. in the Vonnie Bordon Theatre with a general admission of $5.

Auditions will take place on Friday, December 5 in Kinesiology and Health Building Dance Studio from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The graduating seniors will be pursuing careers as teachers, dance studio owners or obtaining their Masters of Fine Arts degree in Dance after leaving Southeastern.

Southeastern’s own dance crusader, Costa has had the honor of being selected for the American College Dance Association National Board of Directors this past year in Tennessee and with that, has brought the Southeastern Dance Program into the possibility of national recognition.

Costa is trying to push the boundaries of artistic dance expression with students in order to complete national standards with other universities so students can get the best advantage in their dance careers once they leave Southeastern.

“Since the three years that I have been here, we have inspired students to pursue masters degrees in dance, to pursue masters degrees in dance therapy, to open their own studios, to start their own dance companies and to become innovative teachers,” said Costa. “This is an incredible time to study dance at Southeastern at all levels and within all disciplines of the arts and non-arts. I believe in a balanced InterArts approach to creativity and we are developing artists here.”

Costa believes Southeastern offers a very supportive, and welcoming, process of creation for those who want to study movement at all levels.

Hammond’s City Council held a meeting Tuesday, July 28 about lifting the ban on Sundays for bars selling alcohol.

While the council’s vote did not lift the ban, Hammond’s community remains affected by this vote. After the meeting, Council Member Lemar Marshall urges those that are interested in seeing this ban lifted should create a petition so it can be revoted.

Although residents of Hammond are aware of this issue, there is debate on whether if people should take action in supporting this ban being lifted or in believing the ban should remain in place. Citizens of Hammond have been questioning whether the decision of the council’s vote was fair. It has been debated on whether or not it would be beneficial or harmful to the community of Hammond if the ban was lifted.

During the City Council meeting,

Executive Director of Hammond’s Downtown District Terry Lynn Smith shared the same opinion as Latino, believing all business should stand on equal ground, “We want to maintain that fairness, and honesty and equal opportunity,” said Lynn.

“That’s very important for all of us to remember that’s why we live in America, is equal opportunity. Sometimes you have to forget the selfishness of your desires and put the community first, and that’s what we hope that our council does, that our mayor does, our director of administration does.

We admire these people, and we work very hard to work with them, for them, and beside them.”

Owner of the Red White and Brew, Todd Delune explained the hardships business owners and bar owners face with the ban in place.

“The tax this city loses is probably $75,000-100,000 in revenue due to that ban,” said Delune. “It affects my top line income and my bottom line income. It just forces us to have to operate more efficiently

than all of our counterparts because they get seven days to perform, and I get six days to perform. The difference is I don’t get a discount on any of my expenses because I’m forced to close another day out of the week, so I obviously have to make less money than my counterparts do as well. By counterparts I mean restaurant bars, grocery stores, convenient stores and big box retailers who all sell essentially the same category of goods we do.”

Students, much like the citizens of Hammond, are just as split on the matter.

Southeastern nursing major Khudija Aftab is in favor of the ban.

“I believe if there is any ban, there should be a ban, and if there is a ban I strongly support it,” said Aftab. “Alcohol should be banned on Sundays. I think alcohol at any level, at any stage, at any time, harms the community more than it benefits.”

Aftab has a one year old child and when looking to buy a home, does not see herself in Hammond.

“I see myself buying a house more in Mandeville, not in Hammond because

of the fact there’s college students here.

There’s a lot of drinking and drugs. I strongly agree that Hammond needs a family city image, and I would want to move out of here if that’s the case.”

Southeastern student worker Connie Rezentes believes the ban does not need to be lifted.

“I think there’s plenty of alcohol to be sold on every other day of the week, and people in college are often first timers away from home, learning to exercise their independence,” said Rezentes. “It’s easy to get caught up in alcohol, and before you know it, you have an addiction. I’m a Christian. I think Sunday is the day of the Lord. That’s one day we are to take a break from things like that and give time to our families, resting and restoring ourselves.”

While debate and opinions differ, the ban remains in place. Many Hammond residents, from bar owners, their employees and to Southeastern students, stand on opposite ends of whether the effects of the ban would be positive or negative.

Southeastern Director of Sport Performance, Brandon Howard trains the university’s athletes all year round, preparing them to succeed in their sport.

It is no surprise Southeastern’s Lions and Lady Lions’ sports teams are fit.

Between school, relationships, spring break and more recently, summer, these athletes maintain their shape even outside of their season.

They are not being followed around by a drone demanding they randomly, “Drop and give me fifty,” or that they stay away from the carbohydrates. These athletes have someone looking out for them; more specifically, Southeastern Director of Sport Performance Brandon Howard.

Howard’s job is more than just assigning workouts. HE has to also consider factors that play a role in the body’s response to stress, like specific injuries to the body and nutritional intake.

Nutritional intake can especially be important to how well the body will respond.

According to Howard, when your diet is clean and balanced, you’re not going to get sick as often.

“You’re not going to get the flu,” said Howard. “You’re not going to catch a cold. Things that hold you back, keep you weak and in the bed.” said Howard.

Summer training for athletes is in full swing, primarily with football, soccer and volleyball players. For athletes, staying fit is a year-long obligation with no off time. They train during the school year and are given things when they’re not in school, like during Christmas or Spring Break.

Howard believes there is always time for training and the

more you stay in shape, the less likely of an injury you are going to have.

“The more time you put in, the better off you’ll be,” said Howard.

According to Howard, there are different workouts for different people, but all should include a full body approach. There are some exercises that carry over to all sports, exercises that are all about increasing athleticism, increasing overall strength and increasing explosion. Howard’s workouts strive to maintain a total body approach.

“There is no set of five or six exercises that I’m going to give them [athletes]. It’s all different, all built around the needs of the athlete,” said Howard.

Each team has their own training time based on classes and

where they are in the season.

Howard sits with coaches during the preseason and makes a schedule. An athlete’s training does not consist of an, “I’m just doing arms” or “I’m just doing legs today,” approach. Instead, it is a training methodology that focuses on sports performance.

“I don’t care how big their arms are getting; I care about how they produce on the field, how they move, how they run and jump,” said Howard.

They are training the whole body, concentrating on the shoulders, neck, hips and knees, and going into core strength as well with abs and rotational strength.

Howard also believes that it is important for not only athletics to eat healthy and exercise, but for everyone in general to do so.

Howard thinks often times, people feel that to see results they have to do a particular exercise or program. His advice however, would be to just get out and do something. To find something you enjoy, such as bicycling, Pilates, Cross Fit and all the different types of exercise.

“Find what you enjoy doing and what you feel you’re getting the most out of and then go do it,” said Howard. “Find what keeps you motivated, what keeps you coming back two, three, four days a week.”

He encourages students to question what they are doing, how they are doing it and to find a way to learn. Going on the internet and researching is a starting point.

“Everybody has their own nitch, their own thing that they are going to enjoy,” said Howard.

“Being fit is all a state of mind, being fit is about what you enjoy doing. Maybe you like to run 5ks, maybe you like to Cross Fit. It’s

about finding your nitch that makes you feel active and keep being active.”

Finding an exercise routine that is your own and not another person’s may be the key to finding a good routine.

“That’s what I would recommend to any student looking to get into an exercise routine,” said Howard. “Get out of your comfort zone, don’t just do what everybody else is doing because a lot of times what everybody else is doing is not doing anything for you.

People tend to eat for convenience and eating just what is in front of them. Bettering nutrition and being conscious of one’s intake is the first step to changing the body.

According to Howard, diet is 80 percent of the battle and he advises staying away from processed and fast foods. When people get into their late 20s, early 30s, their metabolism will not work like it did in the past, so eating properly will have long-term benefits.

“My biggest tip is work on nutrition, drink more water, less soda,” said Howard. “These little things everyone hears but doesn’t want to do and then find a form of exercise, a form of fitness that you enjoy. You put a good diet with exercise and you will see results.”

It was during Howard’s time at East Carolina University he first began to learn about what a strength coach does and considered it as a career option. A self-acclaimed weight room guy, he enjoyed training and was always interested to learn about training and asking questions.

“I was that kid that was always asking a million questions,” said Howard. “When I had a strength coach, I was like, ‘why do we do this? Or, ‘Why do we do the percentage of that that we do?’ Just out of curiosity. I had an inquisitive mind towards that subject.”

He earned his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology from East Carolina and his master’s degree in Exercise Science from Utah State, becoming a certified strength and conditioning specialist after six years of education.

For students interested in pursueing a workout regime, Southeastern’s own Pennington Center offers multiple classes and opportunities for fitness.

Howard gave some final advice for exercising properly by saying, “It’s not always about lifting weights.”

CAMPUS BRINGS NEW BUS ROUTES

Lion Traxx Shuttle Service will be offering two new routes in place of the old route for this coming year in order to give students better transportation to and from classes.

The Student Government Association originally started the program in 2007. Currently, an average of 1,500 students ride the bus each day.

Through requests and surveys from students and the growing need to put bus stops at increasingly popular areas, such as the Student Union and the teacher’s education building, the program decided it was time to expand the route and separate it into two different routes: a gold route and a green route.

“We took the one route we were running for the past seven years and split it into two routes,” said Director of Lion Traxx Gary Prescott. “Now we will have one route on the west side of campus and one route on the east side of campus. What that does is allow us to add two more stops to populated areas of campus.”

Since freshmen commuters, students from Greek Village and Southeastern Oaks mainly use the bus system to get from north campus to south campus, all north campus stops will remain the same and be on both the gold and green routes. The

only difference between these routes is one splits off to go to the east side of campus while the other splits off to go to the west side of campus.

“The routes will be designated: a green route and a gold route,” said Prescott. “Each stop will be equipped with a map showing where the next stop will be. Also, proper signage will say all our hours of operation. One thing we will add is there will be a little QR code at the bottom, which will allow the students to track the shuttles in real time.”

The Southeastern App will also be updated and revamped to be more user friendly. This will give students a way to track all the shuttles and see which bus is closest to them.

Furthermore there will be four running buses going throughout the routes at a time instead of three. These may include one 40 passenger bus, one 16 passenger/handicap accessible bus and three 24 passenger buses.

This will make routes faster. The standard route used to be 17 to 18 minutes; this recent change to the system will cut the bus routes to 13 to 14 minutes.

“All of this is done in hopes of trying to speed up our transient times for more students to meet the demands of transportation that has been required these last couple of years,” said Prescott.

Lion Traxx hours are between 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Students must have a valid Southeastern student identification card in order to ride the bus.

In addition, Lion Traxx is offering student employment for student drivers. Students who are interested in becoming student drivers need to contact Prescott in order to apply for the position.

“We currently have two student drivers who did an awesome job and we are hoping to expand a little more,” said Prescott.

LADY LIONS READY TO KICK OFF

The Lady Lions will be hosting their first soccer match against Jackson State University on Friday, August 21 at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.

Fans will see several familiar faces in the lineup as well as five new ones. Last season, as freshmen, Maggie Ramsey and Maddie Kresevic each had a great deal of playing time.

Ramsey started in all but one of the 20 matches, and Kresevic played in all 20, though only starting in three. Each contributed to Southland wins and added to their goal and assists counts.

“We have anticipated roles for players but that all comes

down to who gets it done in practice and who performs in games,” said Head Coach Blake Hornbuckle.

Joining freshmen will be Christina Cutura, Vanessa Arzaluz, Payton Colson, Sofia Olsson and recently signed, Elizabeth McMurray.

Cutura is a Louisiana native from Pearl River, where she attended Pope John Paul II Catholic High School. Her older brother, Andro, is a Southeastern alumni and also played for the Lion’s baseball team.

Cutura has something of a rare ability in the soccer world, being able to play dominantly left footed on the field.

It’s a great commodity to have left footers on the team.

According to Hornbuckle, it gives balance on both sides of the field.

“We are excited about what Christina is going to offer us with her attributes and left foot,” said Hornbuckle.

Arzuluz is coming to humid South Louisiana from dry Sparks, Nevada. With her, she brings experience from top clubs like the San Juan Spirits and Nevada Elite Football Club.

“Vanessa is very skillful, very crafty with the ball and can play centrally. I think she’ll give us a new dimension to our tactics,” said Hornbuckle.

Colson is coming down from neighboring state, Mississippi where she lived in Flowood County.

Like Cutura, she is not the first in her family to attend Southeastern. Her father, Robb Colson, played for the Lion’s football team in 1976. She has played for the Chicago Fire Juniors of Mississippi and Gulf Coast United Futbol Club.

The Lady Lions’ previous season ended with a 12-8 record after a loss to Houston Baptist in a Southland Conference match. A veteran Lady Lion squad featuring 21 letterwinners and nine starters from last season’s sqaud looks to delve deeper into this year’s tournament.

“She is a sheer athlete; she’ll be able to get up and down the field, to the sides,” said Hornbuckle. “She can play centrally as a mid and be very great and tough on challenges. She’ll win a lot of balls.”

Rounding out the new-comers is Olsson, hailing from Lysekil, Sweden.

“Sofia is going to be very difficult for defenders to contain; she has great size, great speed and can fetch the ball. We’re really looking forward to her arrival,” said Hornbuckle.

The new teammates each bring with them strengths and talents that can add to the team’s overall performance.

“It’s going to be a great addition for us,” said Hornbuckle.

“Along with the returning players, if we can keep everybody healthy, with a little luck and cohesion, it could potentially be a great year for us.”

Returning are core players forwards Bri Singh and Kayla Vera; midfielders Cheyanna Maxwell, Ramsey and Gisenia Utreras; defenders Maddie Allen and Erin Christ and goalkeeper Hope Sabadash.

“We’re looking forward to the stability our returning core players will offer,” said Hornbuckle.

Last season Sabadash was injured but will be returning this season, full force and leading the team from the back.

“We are very excited about having Hope in the goal; she’s a catalyst and it’s great when you have one of the top 15 goalies in the country,” said Hornbuckle.

Team captains will be forward and midfielder, Casey Peacock alongside the afore mentioned Allen. Hornbuckle believes they will bring a sense of maturity and cohesion to the team.

“They’re very conscious of what they do and what they bring to the team,” said Hornbuckle.

The Lady Lions’ previous season ended with a 12-8 record after a tear-jerking loss to Houston Baptist in the Southland conference match. However, the team is determined to come back.

“We have big hopes to stay healthy, to put in good performances consistently, day by day and just get better every day as a team,” said Hornbuckle.

LIONS OUT TO DEFEND SLC TITLE

This football season familiar faces will return to build upon their legacies and new players will join in hopes of creating their own. The Bennett Era is now over, and in its place is a duo of quarterbacks, who hope to continue the winning tradition Bennett and company left behind. Throw in several new coaches with another strong Lion defense, and 2015 is built to be another entertaining season for Lions fans.

The first difference that fans might notice is the absence of star quarterback Bryan Bennett. Filling his role looks to be in the hands of either junior D’Shaie Landor or Larry Cutbirth. Both men played during this year’s spring game, but it appears Landor may have the edge on gaining the starting spot.

“Anytime you lose a great player, it’s an opportunity to step up. D’Shaie Landor did that in the spring, and it’s his job heading into the fall,” said Head Coach Ron Roberts during the 2015 Southland Media Day. Roberts, however, did not rule out the possibility of another player winning the spot.

“He’s going to have to face some competition for the job, but he’s a tremendous football player, and we have faith in D’Shaie to be the man,” said Roberts.

One of the strongest advantages the Lions will have this season is the defense that featured several players on the preseason All-Southland honors. Headlined by senior defensive backs Harlan Miller and Denzell Thompson appearing on the first team, the Lions had a total of seven players make it onto the first and second All-Southland team. Every group within the Lions defense made it on the list as senior defensive lineman A.J. Bowen and senior linebacker Herbert Harris both made the second team. Senior running back and kick returner Xavier Roberson also made the list as both kick returner and all-purpose player on the second team.

Among the several new coaching hires the team has made this offseason, defensive coordinator Blake Williams looks to continue the intense Lions defense that fans have become accustomed to. Although the team will feature many plays fans already know, Roberts believes Williams will put his own spin on the defense.

“Blake will bring his own touches to the defense, and I am sure his passion will come across when you see our defense play,” said Roberts.

experienced running backs to help carry the team to another conference title.

Seniors Roberson, Kody Sutton and Rasheed Harrell look to split the majority of the carries for a Lions team that is not shy when it comes to running through the trenches.

“We have always been a run first team, and pride ourselves on being in the top of the conference every year in rushing,” said Roberts.

The Lions kick off their season against conference foe Northwestern State University.

Their game last year was a close contest that finished 3022 victory in favor of the Lions.

NEW FACES TO JOIN LADY LIONS VOLLEYBALL

Last season was cut short after a loss against the University of Central Arkansas, leaving Lady Lions 11-18 overall and 8-8 for conference.

The Lady Lions look toward the upcoming volleyball season this fall, being led by Head Coach Jim Smoot, who has been with Southeastern for over two years. New additions to the team hope to bring strength and intensity to the court.

This past season, the Lady Lions started off at home with a postseason scrimmage, shortly followed by the first game of the regular season against the University of Alabama. Throughout the season, the team made a continuous cycle of wins and losses. They ended the season in the first round of the Southland Conference Volleyball Tournament with a loss against the University of Central Arkansas, two-time defending tournament champions, finishing the season 1118 overall and 8-8 for the conference.

Reflecting on the season, Smoot felt the team did well despite their finishing record.

“Our overall win-loss record was not where we wanted it to be, but overall, the team met most of our expectations,” said Smoot.

“Making the conference tournament was the most important.”

Smoot wants to see repetition from last season and new improvements present in this season to come.

“I want us to carry over the attitude shown during our spring tournaments, that being an attitude of expecting to win,” said Smoot.

“I really enjoy working with this group of players and I am looking forward to seeing them improve to the point of competing for the Southland Conference title.”

Smoot also wants to see “continued improvement in skill, conditioning and team play, which will allow us to meet that expectation of winning.”

Five new players, three freshmen and two juniors, will join the team for this new season.

Freshmen Monica Ramon from San Antonio, Texas, and Macey Stock from Baton Rouge, Louisiana will compete for the libero, defensive specialist, position according to coach Smoot. Freshman Haley Baker from Baltimore, Maryland will contend for the setting position.

Juniors Sara Ulm and Madeline Odom, a Kingwood, Texas native, will play as outside hitters.

“She [Madeline] transferred

from a JC in January and made an immediate impact on our squad with her steady play as a six rotation player,” said Smoot.

“She will make us a much more consistent team.”

CROSS COUNTRY EXCITED TO RUN

The Lions and Lady Lions finished 11th and nineth, respectively, at the 2015 Southland Conference Championships.

Senior Harry Wiggins and the rest of Southeastern’s Cross Country team return this fall in hopes of leading the Lions and Lady Lions deeper into the postseason in years past.

The Lions and Lady Lions both started out strong last season, winning multiple meets. The men took home first place finishes at both the UNO Relays and Wolfpack Invitational. Both teams came up short at the Southland Conference Championships, with the Lions and Lady Lions finishing eleventh and nineth, respectively.

Wiggins joined the team in 2012 and has built a reputation for himself as a leader for the Lions since. Coming out of Prairieville, Liouisiana, Wiggins has continued to lead the pack for the men of the cross-counrty team. With the upcoming season being his last, Wiggins has taken a more serious approach than in past years.

“There is a little more pressure, definitely. I am running little more mileage than I usually do,” said Wiggins.

Over on the women’s side, Celia

Zaeringer impressed for the Lady Lions last season, but will not be returning to the team this year. Sophomore Haley Gregoire will look to lead a team that features severeal new faces with hopes of leading the young team.

Head coach Sean Brady was confident on the incoming freshmen, joining the Lady Lions.

“Amber Ferguson is an incoming freshman from Denham Springs who has a lot of upside and is a very energetic young lady,” said Brady. “Hayley Leonard is an incoming freshman from Poway High School in San Diego, California. She will bring a great attitude to our team and will be a contributor to our cross-country team as a freshman.”

The men’s team also has two incoming freshmen, Salem Morelli and Tahj Lewis, who will add to the depth of the team.

“Morelli is an incoming freshman who just started running his senior year at Slidell High School and made huge improvements over the four months of the HS season,” said Brady. “Lewis is

an incoming transfer from the Cayman Islands. He’s competing at the Pan Am Jr. Games in Canada and will be a great addition to our middle distance group. We are looking for him to be a great training partner for our other talented middle distance athletes this season.”

Last season’s team featured several freshmen on both the women’s and men’s squad. Brady is confident that the returning runners will only get better with a season under their belt.

“Our freshman class was pretty big last year. This season, we expect them to be a little more competitive and more willing to take ownership of the team,” said Brady.

“We were lucky to bring on some talented and focused ladies who are driven to be better than they were last season, so we are looking to take that next step as a group.

Our goal is to build on our successes each and every season.”
