From the editor: It’s a never-ending cycle

When I came to Southeastern nearly four years ago, I never imagined where I would be at the end of my time here.

Back then, I underestimated the journey Student Publications would take me on.

It’s hard to think my time here is coming to an end in May. However, I know life has more in store for me post-graduation, and The Lion’s Roar newspaper will

and see so much potential. I know some will move up and take command one day, and although many will only ever work as staff reporters, they have also proven their worth.

When I think about the future, I can’t help but think about the legacy I’m leaving behind at Student Publications.

It’ll be hard to go after four years, but I have faith that these talented young reporters will move up and fill in the spaces; someone will take over as Editor in Chief and others will fill in as section editors.

As reporters, the staff at Student Publications knows that the news cycle is never-ending. My cycle at this newspaper is almost over, but until May 16, I’ll be doing my best to keep the newspaper going while preparing the next group of leaders for my departure. Rest assured, the editors and reporters may change, but The Lion’s Roar will always be here to bring you news and entertainment.

I started my journey as a staff reporter, new to this town and the ways of the weekly newspaper. At first I was quiet and unsure, but over the years, I developed as a person and a reporter thanks to my experiences on staff. I learned not to be scared to approach new people, to ask the hard questions, to write with the audience in mind and to be myself every step of the way.

As I changed, so did my role at the newspaper. I went from a staff reporter to the Arts and Entertainment section editor and last December, I was chosen to take over as Editor in Chief. When I graduate, I’ll be back at the bottom, just a staff reporter trying to work my way up at some newspaper or magazine. But this time, I’ll have confidence in myself and my skills to get me where I want to be.

Now that I’ve been in charge for a year, I look at the role of a staff reporter in a different way. I look at my reporters

What’s next for football seniors?

Ryan Adams

Isiah Corbett Isiah Corbett, a Florida native, has been a premier linebacker in the Southland Conference during his two years as a Lion. During his first year, Corbett was named Louisiana Defensive Player of the Week FCS Linebacker of the Week and made it to the AllSouthland Conference second team. Corbett was successful in making the All-Southland Conference first team in 2014, to also go with his selection to the Sports Network All-America team.

The senior linebacker became the first athlete in school history to be named the Southland Conference Football Student-Athlete of the Year.

Of all the accomplishments Corbett has achieved over his time at Southeastern, he recalls the 2013 season as perhaps his favorite.

“My fondest memory would have to be the fans rushing the field after we beat Sam Houston for the conference title,” said Corbett.

With so many accomplishments under his belt, Corbett has the chance to be taken in the upcoming NFL draft in the spring. Since graduating in December, Corbett has been training in hopes of making it to the next level of his football career.

“I’ve been training at this facility in Baton Rouge called Traction,” said Corbett. “I really don’t have a preference, but I would like to go to a team with a 3-4 scheme, so I can showcase all my talents.”

If Corbett does not get the chance to advance his football career as a player, he hopes to continue his career around the game he loves.

“If I don’t go on to play football, I would be doing something with football such as training players or the business side of it,” said Corbett.

Ryan Adams took over the place-kicker duties this past season successfully. After handling the kickoff duties for two years, Adams finally got the chance to showcase his talents during his senior year. Adams was successful in 16 of his 18 attempted field goals this season and kicked a school record 55 yard field goal against Northwestern State.

“My favorite memory being here has to be winning the two conference championships and changing the atmosphere here in Hammond, America,” said Adams.

Adam’s senior season garnered several awards for his efforts, including making it onto the All-Louisiana first team. Adams has aspirations to continue his playing career, but also has plans if he is unable to do so.

“My plan for the future is to give the NFL a shot. I recently got an agent and will have pro day in April,” said Adams. “If it doesn’t work out, then I will be graduating with a degree in graphic design next fall. Hopefully I can work for Nike or Adidas one day.”

Marice Sutton Marice Sutton has played his part in making the Southeastern defense one of the most feared in the FCS. Playing all four of his years a s a Lion, Sutton was around to witness the past two historical years in the Southeastern football history. Along the way, Sutton has had his fair share of recognition as a top defensive back in the league. Sutton was a Southland Conference Honorable Mention in 2013, part of the 2014 Defensive Back of the Year Watch list and is currently a sports management major.

“My favorite memories were winning the conference title two years in a row,” said Sutton.

The New Orleans native has aspirations to continue his football career on the next level.

“I’m going to try and continue working towards football and see what my chances are to make a team,” said Sutton.

Brady sees potential in teams

The Lion track and field teams return to action this semester, both heavy with potential. With high hopes to maintain their champion status from last year, the men’s team will have returning athletes such as sophomore Alex Holden in the 800, and juniors Jonathan Kinchen and Jimmy LeBlanc in shot put and Kadarius Williams in high jump.

New transfers include Alex Young, an All American hammer thrower; Devin King, the top ranking high school recruit in the country; Gennard Paul in multiple jumping events; Ashley Riley, a sprint and middle distance runner; and Raheem Brown, who set four school records at his junior college and was a national qualifier.

“This is the best recruiting class we have had since I’ve been here,” said head coach Sean Brady. “We have very high expectations for the team’s performances during this season.”

The women’s team aims to improve their rank and finish among the top three in the conference. Returning to help them accomplish this is Domonique White, a sprinter and National Collegiate Athletic Association qualifier; and four pole vaulters: Addison Martinez, Whitney Adams, Katelyn Whitekiller and Sharon Ann Ourso.

Similar to the men’s team, the women’s will add many transfers to their running family this season:

from Jamaica, Sharonna Williams will join the team as a red shirt freshman and high jump champion Ikea Kaufman will join.

“It is looking up to be a fun and exciting year when we can move up the ladder,” said Brady. “We’re just a couple steps from the championship and close to the top.”

Brady also believes the coaches on staff are the strongest thus far. Mike Bartolina, who has been at Southeastern for 10 years, will continue to coach pole vault and jumpers; Lucais MacKay who has been on staff for three years; Brandon Chapoton for four; and new arrival Corey Mistretta.

“He [Mistretta] brings energy and experience to the team that we’ve been missing,” said Brady.

The coaches’ main goal is to help the athletes get their degrees and prepare them for professional work in those fields after school.

The track and field season has been underway since Jan. 9, where they partook in their first meet of the season at Louisiana State University’s Invitational in Baton Rouge. Only a small group participated and the experience was taken as a trial run opportunity.

The following meet will be in Houston and Brady believes the team will perform at full strength.

Southeastern’s annual invitational will be held April 16 and 17 on campus with field events beginning at 10:00 a.m. and running at 1:00 p.m.

Lions continue to play through break

While no classes were taking place during winter break, the men’s basketball team continued to battle their opponents on the court.

Southeastern has played over six teams since they lost against the Redhawks before finals week.

The first game to take place after finals was on Dec. 16 when the Lions battled the Miners at the University of Texas at El Paso.

Southeastern would not fare so well in this game, letting the Miners take as much as a 24 point lead before ending the game with a final score 80-62.

Zay Jackson, who had to leave early in the first half due to an injury, made 26 points leading in offense while Joshua Filmore

added 12, and Onochie Ochie made 10.

The Lions then took on the Winthrop Eagles at the University Center and continued to stay undefeated playing with the home court advantage.

The Eagles and Lions battled constantly to have their names on the leader board with the lead switching hands seven times in the first half.

The Lions would gain momentum on the offense and hold a 44-32 lead at the half.

Southeastern would go up by 19 in the second half but Winthrop cut the deficit ending with a score of 81-71.

Five players scored in the double digits for the Lions.

Filmore and DeVonte Upson scored 15, Daniel Grieves and Ochie lent 14 and Jackson added

13 points of his own.

Jackson was also able to make a career-high of seven assists.

After playing the Eagles, Southeastern then traveled to Florida to put in two games before Christmas.

On Monday, Dec. 22, the Lions played at Central Florida, and they played at South Florida on Tuesday.

With the start of the first game on the road, Southeastern’s top scorer, Jackson, was unable to lend his hand in scoring due to an injury. Cedric Jenkins stepped up, making a career best by scoring a season-high of 22 points.

Even with Jenkins picking up some of the slack of the loss of Jackson, the Lion’s still ended the game short with a score of 70-65.

With the match against Central Florida not taking place

until nighttime, Southeastern had to turn around right after their loss and travel to Tampa, Fla. for a noon face-off against South Florida.

After facing a loss the night before to Central Florida, Southeastern would once again face defeat at the Sun Dome falling 78-63 to the Bulls.

With the Lion’s playing yet another game without Jackson, the defense stepped up their game, but it was not enough to pull out a win before the final buzzer blew.

Upson was able to grab a game-high of nine rebounds for this game and Ochie and Filmore led the Lions with 16 points each.

After Christmas, the Lions returned home to host the Dillard Bleu Devils in an exhibition win,

Lady Lions start SLC play over break By maria goddard Staff Reporter

Though the university closed for winter break, the Lady Lions basketball team continued to play.

They celebrated wins against Florida A&M and Sam Houston State University, and suffered losses to LSU, Ole Miss and Stephen F. Austin.

Despite setbacks, they were not discouraged. They continued to move forward during practices and games.

“We practice at five in the morning,” said head coach Yolanda Moore. “They show their love for the sport through their commitment. They are on time for everything, have great attitudes and give maximum effort in practice and games.”

Even with their best attempt,

the LSU Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Lions 75-42 on Dec. 14. The Lady Lions were able to collect 38 rebounds, 19 turnovers and eight steals. Senior guards Symone Miller and Elizabeth Styles led the team, collectively scoring 25 points.

The next three games went into overtime with the Lady Lions winning once and losing twice.

On Dec. 20, Southeastern bounced back from the loss against LSU and conquered Florida A&M 69-67 at home in the University Center. Styles was able to achieve her season-high of 21 points, leading the team to victory.

“We’ve seen a lot of growth with our team. They have matured a lot and are not making as many mistakes as they made early on in the season. We’re finding our

identity, playing together, learning to play within our system,” said Moore.

According to senior forward Jameika Hoskins, the team had trouble closing out in the overtime games. In order to improve, the Lady Lions play against each other during practice and follow Moore’s direction. “[We’re] making it more like game situations and going through the game plans the way coach planned it out for us. We feed off of each other’s energy,” said Hoskins.

The Lady Lions kept up the intensity in an away game against Ole Miss, but came up short, 7179. Styles led again with 18 points and senior guard Annessa De La Cruz scored her season-high of 13 points.

The Lady Lions did not

catch a break when they opened Southland Conference play against Stephen F. Austin’s Ladyjacks on Jan. 5. The Ladyjacks took the lead in overtime and came out on top, 78-71. Junior guard Peaches Anderson led the team and set her career-high with 18 points. Junior forward Nanna Pool also dished out 15 points.

The Lady Lions beat Sam Houston State University during their first home conference game on Jan. 8 with a final score of 78-76 as Hoskins scored with the sound of the final buzzer, avoiding a fourth straight game featuring overtime.

This game marked the first conference win under the Lady Lions’ first-year head coach Moore.

Lions aiming to repeat history

Those who made the drive down I-12 last May to watch the Lions baseball team play against Bryant University were rewarded by witnessing history.

The Lions capped off a 38-25 season by winning the Southland Conference Tournament championship that eluded them for three years.

By virtue of winning the conference tournament, the Lions were guaranteed a spot in a regional, setting up the team’s first regional victory since 1992.

“Obviously last season was a great year. We played our best ball at the end of the season and getting to be a part of that dogpile was special,” said secondyear head coach Matt Riser. “Now it’s time to take it even further than the regional tournament.”

The 2014 season was a historical

one for the Lions baseball program, but now there are new challenges that face the team. All-Conference pitcher Andro Cutura and Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year Andrew Godbold were taken in the draft and have left the team to play in the pros. Riser now has the task of instilling the same winning mentality to a team featuring the thirdbest recruiting class in the state.

“We knew it was going to be a big class that we would have to go out and get. Honestly, we feel like it is one of the most talented classes we have ever had on campus,” said Riser in an interview with lionsports.net. “There’s going to be chances for some freshman to play.

They will have a chance to get on the allfreshman team.”

Despite the large amount of new faces that will be joining the team, there will be several key players returning to the Pat Kenelly Diamond. Senior third

baseman Brett Hoffman and junior Jameson Fisher enter the season a part of the 2015 Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American team. However, Fisher will redshirt this season due to an injury acquired in the fall. Junior Jacob Seward, who was a part of the Southland alltournament team, will return to his spot in the outfield. Also returning are senior infielders Sam Roberson and Jacob Williams, both of whom represented the Lions on the regional All-Tournament team.

“Hoffman is a preseason AllAmerican, so we are going to expect a good bit out of him this season,” said Riser.

The bullpen this year will feature a mixture of new members to the team and some familiar faces. Senior Tate Scioneaux, the 2014 Southland Tournament MVP, will return to the team.

The Lion’s Roar | 11 “Tate has done a fantastic job of stepping up and leading the younger guys. We expect another good year for him,” said Riser. “After the fall, a lot of the feedback we got from the team was just how close this team was.”

Joining Scioneaux will be Kyle Cedotal. Cedotal, a senior, will spend less time in the outfield than he has in the past three seasons.

“Kyle has done a fantastic job of responding to his job on the mound,” said Riser.

One newcomer to watch for is transfer Jake Johnson.

The junior spent the last two seasons playing at Neosho Community College, where he led the team to the Junior College World Series. There are also several freshmen that will have a chance to get into the mix of the bullpen.

This season will include games against some usual instate rivals as well as games against unfamiliar nonconference teams. The Lions will match up with Tulane three times this season, where Riser played at during college. Southeastern will also face the University of Louisiana-Lafayette twice this season, once away and once at home. One year after setting a record for attendance when the Louisiana State University Tigers visited Southeastern, the Lions will travel to Baton Rouge to take on the Tigers before the start of conference play. The team will be tested with several key non-matchups against Utah University, Northwestern University and Michigan State University.

“We’re going to have to take this season one game at a time and just try to continue to get better,” said Riser.

This game features former stars from the Lion baseball team facing the current squad in a scrimmage. This year’s game will be Saturday, Feb. 7 at 12 p.m.

Later that day, fans will have a chance to dine with the team and get to know the squad members at the First Pitch Banquet. The banquet is slated to begin at 7 p.m. and costs $50 per ticket. Coach Riser will present the Lion for Life Award at the banquet and a pair of seniors from the team will speak to those who attend.

The Lions will start conference play in March with a series against Incarnate Word.

Lady Lions to feature returning seniors

The Lady Lions softball team is returning this semester following an excellent previous season where they finished with a record of 19-29-0. Their final game had been against Baton Rouge Community College, where they won with a score of 11-0, a staggering victory.

Returning this season will be junior Katie Lacour, senior third baseman Megan Moore and sophomore designated player Amber Sather, all o selected for the All Southland Conference Team in 2014.

Lacour is originally from Port St. Joe, Florida and stood out among the rest, being named as the first selection,

while her teammates were given honorable mentions. By Southeastern’s standards, she maintains the highest batting average with a .397, and she made an outstanding finish in the season with an 11 game hitting streak.

Moore is from Elgin, Texas and had two career highs. She had made nine homeruns and batted 38 runs in last season, leading the Lady Lions.

Sather is a native of Kennedale, Texas. She added six homeruns to her record as well as 35 walks and was hit by a single season school record tying 13 pitches.

University Housing honors top RAs

Each year, two outstanding Resident Assistants are honored for their hard work unifying and entertaining students who live on campus while also keeping them safe and happy. They help lead those living in their residences hall in finding their place among the Southeastern family.

This year, University Housing chose Krista Achor and Aaron Johnson as the 2014 RAs of the Year.

Achor has served as a Resident Assistant since fall 2012. She began in Pride Hall and currently serves the residents of Greek Village.

“My experience as a Resident

Assistant has helped me branch out and network to meet so many different people throughout my college years at Southeastern,” said Achor, a senior majoring in elementary/special education. “It has been hard work, but definitely worth it in the end with everything I have accomplished so far.”

Achor holds one of four leadership positions on the Resident Assistant staff, managing the Hall Council Committee of RAs who work with officers to create programs, events and interactions for on campus residents.

is exceptional,” said Amanda Robbins, assistant director of residential life. “In November, Krista led a team of students and professional staff in attending the SWACURH [Southwest Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls] Conference at the University of Arkansas.”

Achor oversaw all conference planning and requirements for Southeastern delegates to attend the conference for the first time. In addition, she was recently elected as the National Communications Coordinator for the regional Residential Hall Association, which also is part of the national organization. She plans to use her experiences with the regional organization to grow as an RA. “This semester as a Resident Assistant 2, I intend to continue trying to build the foundation of the Greek Community,” said Achor. “I also plan to continue to promote Hall Council and get other residents involved in the various events that we plan on campus.”

Johnson has served as a Resident Assistant in St. Tammany Hall since fall 2013.

His creativity and dedication have been utilized by the

Departmental Programming Committee in planning events such as Oktoberfest, Fais Do Do and more.

“Aaron’s ability to create successful events and programs can be seen in his relationships with the residents of St. Tammany Hall,” said Robbins. “Aaron has contributed greatly to his residents’ housing experience.”

According to Robbins, Johnson is known among the staff as an outstanding tour guide. He enjoys meeting potential Lions and speaking about the campus.

“I have worked to make the residents’ living experience the best that it can be,” said Johnson, a junior majoring in political science. “One of the main things that I have also done is to make giving tours fun and exciting for potential residents. Giving tours has become my specialty in the Housing office.”

Now that St. Tammany Hall is considered the community service hall, Johnson hopes to engage residents in several service opportunities and events during the spring.

Visual arts program receives accreditation

The skills and academic performance of the visual arts program were put to the test and passed with flying colors when the program was accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

The accreditation of the visual arts program required that the program met specific national criteria, following the academic review and evaluation of peers.

This process of certification is carried out by the organization NASAD. Founded in 1944, it has approximately 323 accredited institutional members.

It establishes national standards for undergraduate, graduate degrees and other credentials in order to provide a higher standard for education.

“Accreditation is a process by which an institution or disciplinary unit within an institution periodically evaluates its work and seeks an

independent judgment by peers ,that it achieves substantially its own educational objectives and meets the established standards of the body from which it seeks accreditation,” said Dr. Kenneth Boulton, department head of fine and performing arts.

As department head, Boulton was the designated NASAD Institutional Representative for the university. He was responsible for managing the self-study process, planning the on-site visit, coordinating any required follow-up correspondence and functioning as communicator between the university and NASAD officials.

According to Boulton, it was no easy feat achieving the accreditation for the program.

The process began as far back as 2008 when the university’s art and design program achieved Associate Member Accreditation status through the NASAD. After this status was obtained, the program was required to undergo an accreditation

review in 2014 for the purpose of achieving Full Member Accreditation status, per NASAD policy.

The process to become a full member took two and a half years of planning, execution and review.

Boulton pointed out the program benefited the visual arts program because they were able to get objective feedback on areas needing further attention, as well as addition to assistance towards future development and growth.

“The process was extremely thorough, and included a period of departmental self-study and subsequent evaluation by a team of outside reviewers who examined all aspects of our program and mission,” said Boulton. “Following this, the NASAD Commission undertook its study of all of materials and rendered a final decision.”

The accreditation of the program will help students for future employment or graduate studies, giving them a leg up in

the real world.

“On the surface, the direct impact might seem somewhat minimal, since our faculty and students have always been a part of an extremely dynamic and productive program,” said Boulton. “However, what this demonstrates is that we are meeting, and in many cases exceeding expectations of educational quality according to nationally recognized standards. It will also assist our students in terms of future employment or graduate study, as most institutions require earned degrees from accredited programs.”

As for the program itself, it offers degrees or concentrations in art education, art history, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, graphic design, drawing, painting, photography and new media and animation.

Big Event lays path to President’s Honor Roll for Community Service

Since 2011, Southeastern has made a spot on the President’s Higher Education Honor Roll for Community Service, now holding the title for four consecutive years.

According to the nationalservice.gov website, this award “highlights the role colleges and universities play in solving community challenges as a result, more students are likely to pursue a lifelong path of civic engagement that achieves meaningful and measurable

One community service project Southeastern has been participating in for these past four years is the Big Event.

The Big Event began in April 2011 when 300 participants signed up to help the Hammond community. The amount of volunteers doubled in March of 2014.

“It is a day set aside for any student, faculty or staff member to give back to Hammond and its surrounding areas,” said senior marketing major Taylor Petit. “It is the best way that we can show our the sooner you can return fresh and more than ready to take on all those new projects.

appreciation for the community that we call home during our time at Southeastern. There aren’t many opportunities set aside for an entire university population to come together for one reason, and the Big Event allows for that opportunity at Southeastern.”

Though the Big Event had over 600 volunteers, it was still a disappointment from the previous year when over 800 people participated.

“If you look at it as a whole, the entire event went smoothly,” said senior sports management major and codirector for the Big Event 2015,

Ivy Gonzales. “It was just a matter of the participation of the student body. If you look at the year prior to it, we had about 400 more students that were involved with the Big Event and it’s a little disappointing because it was our fourth year doing it.

Receiving the honor award for Higher education, with being better the year before, we kind of slacked off on it.”

Rain was one of the problems with lack of participation in 2014. The inclement weather caused one of the larger projects of the Big Event to be canceled.

The Lion’s Roar | 19 “The job that we had was in Zemurray Park,” said senior communication major and Big Event 2015 co-director Zachary Whitehead. “We were going to go and repaint many of the pavilions and the dugouts. Just within that, that was a 300 student job. After that [the rain], all we could do was clean up over there.”

The date for Big Event 2015 has already been set. The forecast does not call for rain, but the co-directors have already made a plan of action if inclement weather causes issues once more.

“I think we also have alternate sets,” said Whitehead. “That is one of the things that we wanted to fix. If there was inclement weather, we wanted to have an alternate date to be made.”

Though 2014 caused issues for the Big Event, some still believe that the Big Event has shown continual improvement over the years.

“I think it went well considering the issues we had with the weather,” said Petit. “Most of our job sites were outside jobs and the rain prohibited us

from completing those. There are always hiccups, but I think the Big Event has consistently improved through the years.”

The 2015 Big Event is scheduled to take place March 15 and applications can be found on the Southeastern page.

Getting involved in the Big Event is a way to show that Southeastern is worthy of having the President’s Higher Education Honor Roll for Community Service award.

“I think it is a really big honor to receive this award,” said Whitehead. “I think it should drive Southeastern to do a little more for their community. The Big Event itself is a big thank you. The more students that we have being a part of it, the more it sounds like we are saying a bigger thank you to Hammond for allowing us to be here. I think anyone and everyone, whether or not you’re here five days a week, six days a week living hear or you commute, you are a part of this school, you are a part of this Southeastern family.

To me, it’s the right thing to do, to give one day back to this community.”

Student sees world from the runway

Jenna Hildebrand, a visual arts major, not only balances a full class schedule, but walks the runway on the side.

Hildebrand’s first experience of the modeling world began with projects for friends. Photos from one of the projects were liked so much they were featured in the 2013 spring catalogue for a clothing company called Geneologie.

These projects soon evolved to walking for seven designers at Fashion Week New Orleans.

“Fashion Week New Orleans is this big event where a bunch of designers submit their designs to it and it’s essentially a big fashion show, where there are multiple fashion shows a day,” said Hildebrand. “For example, I walked for seven designers, we had two shows one day, two shows another day and another show the last day.”

Hildebrand also dabbled in acting, appearing in multiple films and obtaining speaking roles in a couple. She was a member of Talented Theatre and Talented Art during high school, all of which she believes aided her modeling career.

Hildebrand is using what she has learned from modeling in her major courses. Her interest in modeling comes from its relation to her field of study.

“It’s all under arts, whether it’s visual arts or performing,” said Hildebrand. “Modeling is tied into the whole realm of visual arts. When you’re an art major, you are exposed to so many different kinds of art: could be a print, a painting or even a video. It’s inspired by some kind of emotion or a

message the artist wanted to get across. When you’re modeling, your designer has a vision and it’s your job to get that vision across. It’s all a part of an image you are trying to project.

As far as self-expression goes, modeling and art are all tied together because you are the art.”

Even though modeling is tied to Hildebrand’s major, the feelings she experiences while walking in front of a crowd on the runway are something all their own. “[Walking on the runway] felt exhilarating,” Hildebrand said. “It’s an awesome feeling.

It seems like it’s really glamorous, and that part is, but the rest of it is kind of different.

It’s a very interesting industry to be a part of. When I walked in the model call, I could instantly feel the pressure, but when you walk out on the runway, it’s very exciting.”

Despite the glamorous appeal of the clothes and walking in front of an audience, Hildebrand is more drawn to the independence that comes with the job.

“What I value most from the whole experience is how it challenged me,” said Hildebrand. “Sure, there was the challenge to be in shape, to not trip on the runway, all that fun stuff, but there were a lot of behind-the-scenes aspects that proved to be even more meaningful. Successfully navigating fittings from all over New Orleans to Metairie to Baton Rouge, for example.

Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun Indie rock band to perform at Ghost Light

On top of new things the spring semester will bring, Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun will drive in from Atlanta, GA to open up The Ghost Light’s first concert for the spring.

The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 26 at the Columbia Theatre with additional acts opening for this new wave indie rock group.

Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun is made up of Lauren Gibson, Cregg Gibson, Micah Silverman

and Jeremy Cole. The four work together to create a unique sound, which they describe as “noisy, dancy, loud, sincere, sweaty, loveable, hardworking.”

Their music blends indie rock with danceable electronic combinations.

“Making music is one of the most satisfying outlets,” said Lauren Gibson, who plays guitars, keys and vocals. “Connecting with music and fans is an amazing thing.

We’re not really chasing anything, we’re just making music and sharing it.”

The band was created

when two previous bands the musicians were in broke apart. They decided to then make music together and began touring in 2009.

“The development of the band came easy as we’ve all been friends and in bands together for a long time, and have always been on the same page on how we want the music to evolve,” said Gibson.

While Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun is growing their fan base, their hopes for the audience is for them to gain a friend, according to Gibson.

“Just that they can

feel something, anything, profound or just a smile,” said Gibson. “We tend to lean towards themes of hope and strength and perseverance.”

The title of the band was chosen with this ethic in mind. The four musicians stumbled across an article from a satirical fake news magazine about landing on the moon and this article transformed into the idea that anything is possible. “[We are] living by the motto: Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun. It is a code; an ethic,” said Gibson.

“Aim high, work harder, think bigger, sound bigger.”

“These days our musical heroes are the artists who make the music they wanna make and people gravitate towards it because it is awesome and not ‘cause it is popular,” said Gibson.
