President’s Column

by Richard Anderson Well, the 2010 Half Marathon & 5K race weekend is over, and when I add up all of the plusses and minuses, I will call it a clear success. Our goal is always to do everything perfectly, but in reality, we just want to do more right than we do wrong so that in the end our participants have a positive experience. I think

This year’s field was arguably the best it has ever been, and these two led their respective fields for the overall wins. I would also like to congratulate women’s runner-ups Jackie Pirtle-Hall and Margaret Lyons and men’s runner-ups Sammy Rotich and Micah Tirop. The spectators loved every minute!

I would like to thank all the sponsors, volunteers, charter volunteer groups (Girls on the Run St. Louis, Pathways to Independence, Payback and the Belleville Running Club), runners, administrative staff and spectators for coming out and making our Half Marathon/5K weekend a great one.

I would also like to send a special thanks to Captain Murphy and the Clayton Police Department for all they do to support the Special Olympics. Captain Murphy and the Clayton PD do most of the “heavy lifting” in this effort, from pre-race tasks such as soliciting sponsor support, lodging discounts, coordination with the University City PD and St. Louis City PD, to race day operations command of all traffic, EMS response, etc. I would also like to thank the University City officials and PD,

Now for new business. I would like to talk about something that I will be adding to the newsletter periodically. I will be doing interviews with former Olympic runners (long distance, middle distance, hurdlers and sprinters) to paint a picture of what it means to compete at this level and then to maintain a life outside of sports as well. I find it particularly interesting to talk to them about family dynamics and keeping a healthy lifestyle after competing at the highest level. I think they can offer valuable insight and strategies on this. In the end, as they transition from young adults to masters and beyond, they deal with the same issues as all of us when they retire from professional athletics, so some of their life lessons could help us. The first person that I’ve interviewed is 1984 Olympian at 800m and 1500m Ruth Wysocki. SLTC Member Profile: Jereme Foster Age: 27 ~ Born: Springfield, Mo. ~ Occupation: Project Manager ~ Family: Mom, Dad, brother and sister are still in Springfield. I’m survived in STL by my 140-lb puppy, Titan. ~ Favorite restaurant: Sage. ~ Favorite movie: For the Love of the Game. ~ Favorite book: Atlas Shrugged. ~ Why did you start running: After playing college baseball and having my career end because suspected testicular cancer and having surgery at the most inopportune time, I had a large athletic void in my life. I tried rugby at first and kept active running 30 minutes a day, playing basketball, baseball and other various sports. I was in sales at the time, and walking into appointments with black eyes and scratches doesn’t help close a deal, so I had to drop rugby. I was then challenged by a co-worker who was partially paralyzed and had completed 14 marathons to run my first. Eight weeks later I finished my first marathon in 3:10 and was addicted! I now run for my life, health and mental satisfaction. ~ Running since: Seriously, Oct. 2009; originally, since 1986. ~ SLTC member since: August 2010. ~ How did you learn about the SLTC: Website. ~ Miles per week: 35-60. ~ Favorite place to train: Soulard, Lafayette square, Forest park, Creve Coeur Lake. ~ Favorite workout: 40-minute lift and a 9-mile tempo pace around Lafayette Park. ~ Most satisfying performance: First marathon in 3:10:15 or first time I placed first in the Clydesdale division of the Innsbrook Triathlon 2010. ~ What do you like about the SLTC: Current running info, events and community. ~ What do you want others to know about you: Converting from team sports where running is punishment to running now for enjoyment has been a big transition. I travel for work and running allows me to have a first-person view of the most amazing spots in the US. From discovering Civil War battlefields in Arkansas, to dodging traffic in downtown LA, to running along the freedom trail in Boston. My running shoes are the first thing I pack in my suitcase and the first thing I take out.

Marine Corp Marathon On Oct. 31, a number of SLTC members took part in the MCM in Virginia, and these photos definitely caught our attention.

Chris Bossman (left) and John Finkenkeller by coincidence happened to run into each other in matching SLTC shirts at the MCM expo, where they stopped to pose with a wax Oprah. Said John of their trip: “No PR's, but we did meet one of our goals which was beating Oprah's time. Chris was just under 4 hours, I was a little over 4 hours. The highlights of the day were certainly the scenic course in Virginia and the DC monuments, great crowd support , and the Marines stationed at the start, along the route, at every water stop, and handing out medals at the end.

On Oct. 24, Chris Paletta ran the Army 10-miler. A week later, he took part in the MCM. Afterward, writes Chris: “I sort of passed out and was carried to the medical unit overlooking Iwo Jimo by 4 strong Marines on a stretcher. Because I did not respond to leg elevation and drinking some tasteless junk … I agreed to an IV. Well, being the photographer that I am, of course I had to document the event. Besides, if something bad had actually happened, why not go out with a photograph? … I was fairly weak and just lifted my trusty camera, which I always have wrapped around my wrist for just such an event.”

We’re happy to report that Chris is doing great now and even ran the SLTC Half Marathon last month. He’s moving out east this month and we wish him and his family the very best.

Q&A with Ruth Wysocki, 1984 U.S. Olympian 800M and 1500M Olympian now is teaching in Temecula, Calif.

In 1978, Ruth Kleinsasser upset a runner named Mary Decker to win the 800 meters US Championship with a time of 2:01.99. Six years later, after her marriage to Tom Wysocki, she made the Olympic team in the 800M as well as 1500M (beating Decker again), and at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, she went on to reach the finals of both events. In 1997, she went on to set a number of Master’s records.

In October, she spent a few minutes with SLTC president Rich Anderson to talk about the current state of running and what she’s been up to.

SLTC: Ruth, first of all, let me congratulate you on such a great running career. I think the first line of your USA Track & Field Bio sums it up: "There is the history of women’s track in America, and then there is the history of Ruth Wysocki’s career, which is a little longer." When did you know, or at least think, that you would pursue running for a living?

RW: I think it was probably about 1980 when I realized I might be able to make some money, but not what I would now call “making a living.” The biggest possibility at that point was scoring a running-related job with the flexibility to train and travel to races. In about 1983, I definitely felt there was money to be made, but I thought it would be my husband, Tom, making it, not me.

The Olympic Trials in 1984 opened all those doors for me. Up until then, I didn’t even have a shoe contract. Tom was sponsored by Brooks and gave me free shoes since we were married.

Tom and I always knew that “you were only as good as your last race.” Running income couldn’t be counted on indefinitely and a bad season, illness or injury could be devastating financially if you were totally dependent on that income. Fortunately, from 1984 through 1988, my contract with Brooks afforded some security.

SLTC: What do you think was your defining moment as an athlete, and tell us also what moment, if any, caused you to question your career choice?

RW: There were many races that were very significant to me personally, but obviously winning the Trials at 1500 in 1984 was the defining moment. I don’t think I ever questioned the career choice. I never really looked at running as a “career,” but rather something that I was very fortunate to be able to pursue. If I ever questioned the career choice, it was probably after the “elite” racing was over. I never felt I was sacrificing, but rather doing what I loved. However, now I realize that it probably hurt me financially in the long run because I raced for so many years without pursuing a “real” career.

SLTC: If you had to pick one quality that is important to not only propel a young person’s athletic prospects to the next level, but also aid in self-improvement as a person, what would it be?

RW: Picking just one is very difficult. Setting the goal, having the dream and committing yourself to do whatever it takes. I heard something once at a seminar that I carried with me through the years. You need to set your goals and then ask yourself two questions: How badly do I want it? And what price am I willing to pay? One quality? Probably perseverance.

SLTC: I was at the 1984 Summer Games in L.A., sitting in the eighth row right at the finish line holding my breath for most of the finals. What does it feel like to perform on such a stage? Heck, I was nervous and was only a spectator!

RW: I vividly remember the Opening Ceremonies. It was an incredible experience. As the host country, we marched in last, so the anticipation of it all was almost overwhelming. As soon as the American flag hit daylight coming out of the tunnel, it was all goose

Ruth Wysocki, continued from page 7 bumps and some tears. Lots of emotions. One thing I remember was looking for my husband and knowing approximately where he’d be in the stands. I saw famous people in the stands watching us – seemed kind of weird.

There were times during the Games that I was sort of stunned, thinking things like, “Wow! I’m really here!” Other times it seemed very natural. I had spent my running life always trying to be a little better than I was before, and in some ways, this had to be the next step.

Q: We know that you had an exceptionally long career as an elite athlete, but all athletic careers eventually end. Tell us about your life after professional athletics?

What have you found to be the most fulfilling outside of the sport?

RW: In many ways, I was ready for it to end at any moment. I actually “retired” several times and had more than one occasion where I was away from competing for a few years. From the beginning, Tom and I were very conscious of trying to live a balanced life – one that didn’t revolve totally around running. We were aware that it could all be taken away in a moment with an injury or whatever, and we didn’t want that to be all we had going for us.

Tom got his real estate license in 1986 and I got mine a year or so later. He is still in real estate (not a good thing right now in California!).

Our oldest, Michael, was born in 1990 and is now in his 3rd year at UC Santa Barbara studying Mechanical Engineering and running. We adopted Alexey from a Russian orphanage in 2003, and he is now a freshman in high school and involved in Jr. ROTC. Family is very important to us and we love spending time doing things together.

I taught PE and coached at a private school until shortly after we adopted Alexey. I Ruth in 1984 (inset) and was home for a couple of years and then ventured out again. I’m currently working 1998, at age 41 competing in the Tulsa 15K. as an Instructional Assistant at a local middle school and recently started working at the Running Center in Temecula. I have done some coaching/mentoring at local schools and still love being involved in running. I love having the opportunity to share my passion for the sport. In December, Tom & I will celebrate our 28 th anniversary.

SLTC: How about your kids? Any potential for followers in your’s and Tom’s footsteps? For those who don’t know, Ruth’s husband Tom was an outstanding runner; sub :29 10,000m and Div I All-American in cross country & track. Great running lineage!

RW: Michael started running in high school and is currently running for UCSB. I think he’s ready for a big breakthrough, and it’s been great to see him develop his own love of running. Alexey is incredibly athletic, but has no desire to participate in organized sports. However, like I said above, he is involved in the ROTC program at his high school and talks of joining the military.

An interesting thing is the running history of my family. My dad was 4 th in the California state meet at 880 yards in 1946 and the Athlete of the Meet at the first ever National Masters Championships, nearly breaking 2:00 at age 43. My three brothers all ran competitively and many of our respective children compete as well. The torch is being passed on to the next generation.

SLTC: We are now in the age of mega-production races, such as the Rock ‘N’ Roll marathon series, which has expanded into the St. Louis market starting in 2011. We also have a second big race locally, the GO! St. Louis Marathon & Half Marathon. These are both great organizations that do aspire to add value to the runner’s experience with a lot of amenities, etc. However, in this limited market dominated by the giants with bell & whistles, what advice would you give an organization, such as the St. Louis Track Club, which is 40 years old, steeped in rich tradition and still believes our 31-yearold, smaller, less expensive with less extras Half Marathon is still relevant?

RW: Being an “old timer,” I have great appreciation for the local, simple races. Entry fees have skyrocketed and you get to a race with thousands of runners where you are just “one of the crowd.” There is a definite place for the traditional races that cater to the needs & wants of the runner. I also remember back to when I would go to a race and plop down 50 cents to get a 3X5 card with a number written on it to pin on.

SLTC: How about running shoes and running stores? I think this is also an industry that is seeing some small specialty running stores under siege by both the large retailers and the online sales industry. What are your feelings about their relevance in the market place and value to the runners? Do you think they provide a valuable service worth saving, or do you think they will go the way of the independent book seller? If they are worth saving, what can be done to protect them from extinction?

I’m also inspired by many of our customers. Those trying to finish a half marathon, trying to qualify for the police academy, get in shape following gastric bypass, find a little time for themselves with several children underfoot, etc., etc. …

their local running store, and I RW: I certainly hope they won’t be swallowed up. I’m currently working for the Running Center in Temecula (with 2 other stores in Carlsbad and hope all the local running stores Redlands). We offer a full fitting process that includes a real “education” are a special place for them to go. on running shoes and knowing that you will leave with the correct shoe for you. We’re there for the local runners & walkers not matter what —Ruth Wysocki level they’re at. Like other local running stores, we’re they’re for all their needs, even if it’s just to encourage them through some aches and pains.

Try getting your questions answered at the local sporting goods store! We have the BEST customers! They are loyal and stick with us even though they might get a shoe cheaper online. If we cease to exist, they know they have nowhere else to turn. I’m also inspired by many of our customers. Those trying to finish a half marathon, trying to qualify for the police academy, get in shape following gastric bypass, find a little time for themselves with several children underfoot, etc., etc. We offer fun runs, clinics, conversation, entry forms, and encouragement. What an awesome place to work!

I hope all runners will support their local running store, and I hope all the local running stores are a special place for them to go.

George Pugh runs eight half marathons in seven weekends

“I recently completed eight half marathons in seven weekends,” said George Pugh.

“Starting in September I ran Virginia Beach Rock 'n Roll in Virginia. I ran in Effingham, Ill., at ThedaCare in Appleton, Wisc., and the Omaha Half Marathon, on consecutive weekends.

“I PR'd in Appleton with a 2:13:19, followed the next week in Omaha with a 2:15:43.

“The first weekend in October I ran “The Hamptons” Half Marathon in East Hampton, N.Y., on Saturday, followed on Sunday at the Smuttynose Rockfest Half in Hampton Beach, N.H. “The third weekend I ran the Indianapolis Community Half Marathon on Saturday (2:17:11) in Indiana, followed by the Nationwide Columbus Half Marathon in Ohio.”

George began running in January 2008 and ran his first half marathon that December in Dallas. George has run a total of 41 half marathons and one full marathon in 23 months. He joined the 50 States HALF Marathon Club at one of the race expos and hopes to accomplish his 50-state goal by June of 2012.

“Feeling good—having fun. See you on the road,” he commented.

His long distance running has resulted in body-firming, as well as an initial 45-pound weight loss—and a smiling face.

Rae Mohrmann gives a thumbs up to October’s Des Moines Marathon Another long-distance achiever is Rae Mohrmann, who ran the Des Moines Marathon on Oct. 17.

“Cool & crisp, 39 degrees for the 8,000 plus runners at the start of the 5K, 1/2 marathon, marathon relay & marathon—about 2,000 in the marathon,” she said.

“Lovely course that included downtown, some residential, and also along Gray's Lake. Some rolling hills in the first half, but pretty flat for the remainder of the race. Great pasta party the night before with Jeff Galloway as the speaker. Well organized, lots of helpful & friendly volunteers. Nice race,” she commented.

Rae, who won her age group by more than 30 minutes, has been adding to her 50-state marathon cadre, which she completed last June.

Jim Jeske’s walking helps him meet local citizens in Indonesia, Singapore Avid walker Jim Jeske has been keeping fit during some worldly travels. In October, he visited the tropical island of Lombok, Indonesia. The owner of a remote new villa resort had extended him a personal invitation.

“The activity is to enjoy the beach,” Jim said.

Jim also enjoyed rides on a small motorcycle, which he rented for $5 US Dollars, twice the cost of a Coke on Lombok. He followed his stay on the island with some time in central Java and in Singapore.

“One thing great I have learned while traveling is that when you walk or run when you are in a foreign country, you are quickly able to meet locals that are interested in you, want to know where you are from and want to practice their English. I often learn about what is going on in the USA. You would be surprised how much local people know about our country and the government. They love to learn, to talk about their country, and many times will go out of their way to see that you find your way without problems,” Jim said.

Jim has completed Saint Louis as well as out-of-town marathons. He is a longtime board member of Hostelling International’s Gateway Chapter.

Alyssa Rebecca, Alyssa Jones, Tim Rackers among area’s top Cross Country runners Congratulations to cross country runners Alyssa Rebecca, who was named a Saint Louis Post-Dispatch “Athlete of the Week” on Oct. 20, and to Alyssa Jones and Tim Rackers, who were named Athletes of the Week Nov. 3.  Alyssa Rebecca, a senior at Eureka High, took first in the Suburban West Conference championship, first in the Ladue Invitational and second at the Fleet Feet meet.  Alyssa Jones, a sophomore at Rockwood Summit High, took first at the Parkway Central sectional meet and second at the Paul Enke Invitational and Parkway West Invitational.  Tim, a senior at Saint Louis University High School, helped his team capture a championship by winning an individual title at McNair Park with a 5K time of 15:54.63—the fourth best time in the area this season. Forest Park constructing remaining portion of dual path system thanks to $3 million donation “Visitors of Forest Park will soon be able to enjoy the convenience and recreational benefits of a complete ‘Wheels and Heels’ dual path system,” read the Fall 2010 edition of “Forest Park … Now & Forever.”

A $3 million donation from Mary Ann Lee and The Crawford Taylor Foundation will provide $1.5 million for constructing the remaining portion of the dual path system and $1.5 million in endowments for the ongoing maintenance of the paths. The new portion of the paths will extend from the Steinberg Skating Rink, around Jefferson Lake, around Boeing Aviation Field, and connect with the dual paths at the Hampton pedestrian underpass. Several Saint Louis runners and walkers have given input by attending Forest Park Forever’s planning meetings.

FPF’s Dual Path Amenities Plan The final section of the dual path system encompasses the park’s southeast area.

Trailnet moves to 10th & Locust to join Downtown Bicycle Station and Big Shark Best wishes to Trailnet Inc. as it transfers its headquarters from Reavis Barracks Road to the 411 Building at 10 th and Locust streets, downtown. The 411 building also houses the Downtown Bicycle Station and Big Shark Bicycle Company’s second location, “Urban Shark.” The Downtown Bicycle Station will offer 24-hour secure access, bike racks, showers and locker rooms for bicycle commuters. Urban Shark will be a full-service bike shop offering equipment, repairs and rentals.

“The synergies of this partnership will place Saint Louis among those cities recognized for a commitment to healthier transportation choices,” said Trailnet Executive Director Ann Mack. Trailnet, formed in 1988, partners with organizations to promote open space conservation, trail development and outdoor recreation. Projects have included developing the KATY Trail, Grant’s Trail, the St. Louis Riverfront Trail and The Old Chain of Rocks Bridge. Trailnet partnered with The Saint Louis Track Club to put on “The Mississippi Mile” over The Old Chain of Rocks Bridge for eight years.

Correction: Pathways to Independence, of which Craig Strohbeck is Executive Director, provides opportunities for learning disabled adults. An editing error misstated that. (Their walking club continues to thrive, and a contingency from Pathways to Independence assisted at the Half-Marathon/5K on November 7.)

Oatmeal, Chocolate Chip & Pecan Cookies

By Kate Evett, RD, LD. From Cooking Light, December 2007 These easy drop cookies are crisp on the outside and slightly chewy on the inside.

Chocolate mini-chips disperse better in the batter, but you can use regular chips.

Yield: 3 dozen (serving size: 1 cookie)            

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (about 5 1/2 ounces) 1 cup regular oats 3/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/3 cup butter, softened 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 large egg 1/4 cup chopped pecans, toasted 1/4 cup semisweet chocolate mini-chips

Preheat oven to 350°.

Lightly spoon flour into dry measuring cups; level with a knife. Combine flour and next 4 ingredients (through salt), stirring with a whisk; set aside.

Place sugars and butter in a large bowl; beat with a mixer at medium speed until well blended. Add vanilla and egg; beat until blended. Gradually add flour mixture, beating at low speed just until combined. Stir in pecans and mini-chips. Drop dough by tablespoonfuls 2 inches apart onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350° for 12 minutes or until edges of cookies are lightly browned. Cool on pans 2 minutes. Remove cookies from pans; cool on wire racks.

SLTC Board Meeting Minutes Thursday, Nov. 4, at Forest Park Visitor’s Center Attendees Richard Anderson, Tom Eckelman, Dave McNaughton, Pam Mosca, Christy Polk, Rick Lux, Mike Toolen, Kate Evett, editor Anna Jones

Membership count In October, we received 26 new members and 19 renewals for a total membership of 829 families.

Lung Run Had about 60 runners. The race consisted of mainly walkers (~200). They raised a lot of money and had a good time. They will most likely want to do it next year

Half Marathon/5K preparation Volunteers: Will pick up shirts on the morning of the race.

Saturday volunteers will get their shirts on Saturday. Pam reports we need a few more volunteers on Sunday. Rich may do a Facebook post to recruit more volunteers.

Photography: Videos and stills are planned for along the course.

Rich would like to have a lot of pictures from the race this year.

Two people are taking pictures (Joe Shea, Tommy Sansone).

Water stops: Ghisallo as you enter Forest Park, Girls on the Run by ball fields by fire hydrant, and Belleville Running Club in Clayton at Forsyth by Ritz Carlton.

Communication with EMS: In the past this has been handled by the Clayton Police Dept. Plan to have cell phone list.

Refreshment area: Discussed making a chute/corral to prevent congestion by directing runners to the medals and refreshment area.

Elite Runners: Elite runners have been given seeded numbers and USATF runners have a special tag on their race number.

They are competing for the prize money and the USATF championship.

Merchandise: New shirts and hats will be sold. Also some old shirts will be sold at a discounted rate. Christy suggested having more gloves available for purchase. Christy will sell on both Saturday and Sunday. Plan to have 2-3 laptops, along with credit card machine, available at the Expo.

Creation of committees for future: Rich suggested having a committee to address walkers, merchandise, membership, etc.

Specific committees would be helpful to address event issues rather than the entire board.

Early start for walkers: It appears there was different feedback as to whether or not the early start was received well by the walkers in the past. The early start was eliminated this year.

Course support ends at 11am. The finish line will stay open until the last participant finishes. Rich emphasized the importance of more feedback in order to make decisions, i.e., committees

Treasurer’s Report Christy presented the Treasurer’s report. The Half Marathon is doing very well ($11,000 better than last). The fact that income from last year’s Frostbite was reported in the 2009 report and most of the expenses were paid in 2010 negatively impacted the 2010 budget. For the most part, the budget seems consistent from last year. Email blasts and early membership discount appear to have boosted membership numbers.

Other Races SLTC Marathon Relay, Frostbite Series, and Girls on the Run races were discussed. 

Plan to put request for volunteers on the website.



Precision Health Group will come out for Frostbite.



Mark Williams will do the shirt for the Frostbite Series. Plan to ask him to come up with 3 alternate designs.

The next open Board meeting will be held 6:30pm, Thursday, Jan. 6.
