SUNSCREEN BASICS AND FACTS What are sunscreens? Sunscreens are products that contain certain ingredients that help protect our skin from harmful rays that the sun produces called UVA and UVB. These two types of radiation can cause harmful damage to the skin and even lead to skin cancer. Sunscreens vary in how much they will protect your skin, so make sure to choose the best one that fits your skin type.

What are UVA and UVB? Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is part of the electromagnetic spectrum that reaches the earth from the sun. It has short wavelengths that make it invisible to the naked eye. Utraviolet A (UVA) is the longer wave UV ray that causes lasting skin damage, skin aging, and can cause skin cancer. Ultraviolet B (UVB) is the shorter wave UV ray that causes sunburns, skin damage, and can cause skin cancer. What is SPF? SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It is a measurement of a sunscreen’s ability to protect the skin from harmful UVB rays. Most sunscreens with SPF of 15 or above are excellent sources of protecting your skin of harmful UVB rays. What does Broad Spectrum mean? Broad Spectrum helps project your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. How much sunscreen should you use and how often should you apply it? It is recommended that you apply 1 oz. of sunscreen to your body (about the size of a shot glass) 30 minutes before sun exposure. This allows the sunscreen to fully set in. It should be reapplied every 2 hours or immediately after swimming, toweling off, or sweating a lot. What are some other ways to protect yourself from the sun? Wear protective clothing such as hats, sunglasses, loose fitting clothing, and stay in the shade whenever you can too. How do you treat a sunburn? 5 Steps to treat a sunburn: 1. Act quickly when you feel a burn coming on and get into the shade to start treatment right away 2. Moisturize after a cool shower or bath with lotion or aloe vera lotion to cool the burnt area 3. Hydrate with a lot of water since the burn draws water to the area away from the body 4. Medicate with ibuprofen to reduce swelling or redness 5. Assess the damage to see if you need medical treatment
