Title to Lot and risk of loss or damage to the Lot passes to the Buyer when the Hammer falls (i.e. when Slotin, as agent for seller, accepts the bid). Slotin Auction shall have no liability for any damage to property left on its premises after the date of sale. The Sales Price must be paid prior to the close of the auction. 12. Suggest Bid Increments: $0-$500 - $25 increments. $500-1,000 - $50 increments. $1,000 and above - minimum of $100 increments. 11. Absentee Bidding Instructions: If you cannot attend this auction, but would like to bid on items, the procedure is quite simple: 1. Fill out the form on page 3, listing catalog lot number, description, and your top bid price for each item. The limit you leave should be the amount to which you would bid if you were to attend the sale. Bidding increments are listed above. Please make sure that your bids fall within these increments. At the auction, bids are handled in a competitive manner in an attempt to buy the object for less than your top bid. You will be competing against other absentee, phone and internet bidders. You will pay one bid above the next highest bid, but no more than your maximum. If two absentee bids are received with the exact same amount, the first bid received will take precedence. Slotin Folk Art Auction will always attempt to purchase designated lots for the lowest possible amount in competition with other bidders, but we cannot be held responsible for errors or failure to bid. 12. Live Phone Bidding Instructions: If you would like to be called as the lots you are interested in come up during auction, please complete the form on page 3. Items are sold in the exact order of the catalog around 45 lots an hour. List the lot number, and a brief description. Where it says bid amount or phone number, simply list the phone number you would like us to use during the auction. You may leave a back up number. There is no need to list a bid amount unless you would like the phone operator to bid for you in the event that you can-not be reached. Absentee bidding and Phone bidding is a convenience we offer to our customers and we will make every attempt to reach phone bidders as their lots come up during the auction, but we cannot be held responsible for errors, technical difficulties or failure to bid. Phone bidders may wish to view the auction live on online to check the progress of the sale and to help determine when to expect their phone calls. 13. Bidding Live on the Internet During the Auction: Bidders may place absentee bids or bid in real time along with our audience online. If you are bidding live online the Buyer’s commission is 25%. You may view the auction live for no fee. The process of bidding live on the internet is convenient, but not perfect. Your bids are submitted incrementally from Liveauctioneers to a live person in the auction hall who is executing the bids as they come in on behalf of the internet bidders while she is also typing in the bid history for each lot. She will attempt to capture the bid history as accurately as possible, but in the event of a discrepancy, the auctioneer’s records are the official records of the auction.

The Soft Sell of Racism The exhibition accompanying catalog by Tess Schwab highlights Americans’ “fascination/horror with blackness” and points out how these cliched works often “contort representations of blacks into cruel caricatures of subhuman, ruby-lipped bulging-eyed creatures.” Schwab emphasizes the popularity of these stereotypical representations with white audiences who loved the Darktown series and bought so many prints that it soon became one of Currier & Ives most popular products.” Also extremely popular with white audiences, according to Schwab, was the “Blackville comics printed in Harper’s Weekly, where the Smallbreeds, a highly caricatured black family” was introduced and the inspiration for this painting, Food For the Family. Schwab points out that because these representations were so “widely distributed and purchased, the Darktown and Blackville series not only reflected a popular culture view of blacks, but were also a devastating reinforcement of many negative black stereotypes.” So this bring us to the modern era and how these works of art fit into our collective culture. From conversations with many prominent collectors and museum curators of artwork representing African American subjects, the consensus is that we cannot sweep under the rug an entire culture that systematically denigrated African Americans through art and historic objects, but rather preserve these objects and try to provide context to accompany them.

Because the Nazis forbade him to paint, Rosenbaum had to teach crafts in Jewish schools until he and his wife left for London in 1939. There he restored houses and porcelain, was able to resume serious painting and with his wife ran a private art school from 1948 until his death, in The Hague, Netherlands. Ben Uri Art Society holds several examples, having given Rosenbaum shows in 1957 and 1968. Page 14

Provenance: Ex private European collection. Est. $3,000-$5,000. Buyer is responsible for shipping. Rare black ink unauthorized edition of 250 published by Sunday B. Morning in Belgium from the original negatives Warhol used to publish his ‘Factory Additions' screenprints of Marilyn in 1967. In collaboration with Warhol, the Sunday B. Morning publishers decided that they would stamp on the back of their prints “fill in your own signature" as a play on the concept of mass production. There was a falling out between Warhol and the Sunday B. Morning publishers, possibly about money, and communication between them ceased. The Belgian printers, already in possession of Warhol's negatives, went ahead and published editions of 250 of Marilyn, Flowers, and Campbell's Soup in 1970. When the Sunday B. Morning editions began appearing in the art market, Warhol was not pleased. He had not stopped the production of the unauthorized prints, but when he came across a Sunday B. Morning print he would sign it “This is not by me. Andy Warhol." This only served to make the prints even more desirable. Today the black ink Sunday B. Morning prints from 1970 are rare with few having survived.

This piece is from a single owner collection and comes with a copy of the COA from Opera Gallery in NY (signed, stamped and purchase price of $21,000). Est. $20,000-40,000. Buyer is responsible for shipping. Oli Johannsson was a self-taught Icelandic artist discovered late in life who quickly rose to international prominence before his death. Acquired from the final exhibition before his passing, this important painting by Johannsson, one of the last he ever produced, is a significant departure from the highly-saturated abstractions which first brought him curatorial and international acclaim. “You Can’t Come In” is a masterwork for both the front and the back of the canvas. Though the work is signed, titled, and dated on verso, the viewer can easily discern from recto an underpainting produced and abandoned by the artist in favor of the more intimate and seemingly autobiographical subject matter that now occupies its recto. The underpainting was clearly set to be another from his series of brightly hued geometric abstractions, while the current painting favors a more subdued palate, depicting a bucolic landscape with a home, figures, and farm animals in what was likely a snapshot of Oli’s life in rural Iceland. This beguiling departure into figuration from his longstanding oeuvre may reveal something like the too-common trope of an artist becoming more vulnerable as he grapples with his mortality. And yet, an interpretation of the artist’s intentions of being open to deconstruction or available to a straightforward reading is thwarted by the artist with its caustic, mischievous title: “You Can’t Come In.” The majority of Johannsson’s output currently resides in important private and celebrity collections worldwide, as well as Icelandic institutions.

Sam Doyle documented the people and events of the Gullah Islands in South Carolina in his artwork. This pair of works depicts the Sea Island Hurricane of 1893, a disaster of epic proportions. In August of 1893, the Sea Island Hurricane, the largest natural disaster to ever hit Beaufort Co.’s SC Carolina’s Coast killed 2,000-3,000 people, destroyed millions of dollars of property and left thousands homeless and desperate - almost all of them African American from Beaufort, St. Helena and Lady’s Island. An accurate count is difficult to determine as many were swept out to sea. After the storm, people were left with nothing. The bridge was destroyed so boats were the only way to get any thing in out and most of these didn’t survive the storm. Rubble and bodies piled up. Governor Ben Tillman asked Clara Barton and her Red Cross to take charge. This was the very first hurricane relief effort in the history of the United States Red Cross. Barton and her staff arrived in Beaufort on Sept. 20th and stayed for 10 months. These pieces were purchased from an estate in Waynesboro, GA belonging to a prominent Indian Artifact Collector. The collector purchased this piece from Sam Doyle directly in the 1970’s and had it frame at the same time by Marjories Frames which went out of business several decades ago.

Hawkins was a notoriously adept scavenger and painted many of his earliest works on materials he found on construction and dump sites near his home. The painting offered here is likely a prime example of Hawkins’ recycling prowess. Hawkins’ work is included in the permanent collections of every major museum in the country with an interest in folk art, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, The American Folk Art Museum, and The High Museum of Art.

The influence of his Mexican experience is clearly visible in his iconic and highly symbolic work. After a successful exhibition at the Knoedler Gallery in NY with other texas artists in 1952, Clawson moved to NY permanently and for more than five decades created paintings based on social, political, and religious satire, many of which like this painting, include liberal doses of nudity.
