Slotin Auction is proud to present The Collection of Richard Gasperi and James ReskoPioneers in the field of Self-Taught Art

and

Richard and I started the Gasperi Folk Art Gallery in 1980. Richard had experience in the art world working at a fine print gallery while I was working as a pharmacist at Tulane University.

The print gallery director had a small collection of folk art.

We borrowed enough money to buy the folk art collection and opened a small gallery in the French Quarter.

With a passion for outsider art, Richard started traveling the South, collecting the old masters in the outsider art field. Including Howard Finster, Mose Tolliver, Son Ford Thomas, Clementine Hunter, Sister Gertrude Morgan, David Butler, and other folk art greats. Richard became a force in the field of folk art. He had a love and passion for this genre.

As Richard said, "How could you not?"

12. Suggest Bid Increments:

$0-$500 - $25 increments. $500-1,000 - $50 increments. $1,000 and above - minimum of $100 increments.

11. Absentee Bidding Instructions: If you cannot attend this auction, but would like to bid on items, the procedure is quite simple: 1. Fill out the form on page 3, listing catalog lot number, description, and your top bid price for each item. The limit you leave should be the amount to which you would bid if you were to attend the sale. Bidding increments are listed above. Please make sure that your bids fall within these increments. At the auction, bids are handled in a competitive manner in an attempt to buy the object for less than your top bid. You will be competing against other absentee, phone and internet bidders. You will pay one bid above the next highest bid, but no more than your maximum. If two absentee bids are received with the exact same amount, the first bid received will take precedence. Slotin Folk Art Auction will always attempt to purchase designated lots for the lowest possible amount in competition with other bidders, but we cannot be held responsible for errors or failure to bid.

12. Live Phone Bidding Instructions: If you would like to be called as the lots you are interested in come up during auction, please complete the form on page 3. Items are sold in the exact order of the catalog around 45 lots an hour. List the lot number, and a brief description. Where it says bid amount or phone number, simply list the phone number you would like us to use during the auction. You may leave a back up number. There is no need to list a bid amount unless you would like the phone operator to bid for you in the event that you can-not be reached. Absentee bidding and Phone bidding is a convenience we offer to our customers and we will make every attempt to reach phone bidders as their lots come up during the auction, but we cannot be held responsible for errors, technical difficulties or failure to bid. Phone bidders may wish to view the auction live on online to check the progress of the sale and to help determine when to expect their phone calls.

13. Bidding Live on the Internet During the Auction: Bidders may place absentee bids or bid in real time along with our audience online. If you are bidding live online the Buyer’s commission is 25%. You may view the auction live for no fee. The process of bidding live on the internet is convenient, but not perfect. Your bids are submitted incrementally from Liveauctioneers to a live person in the auction hall who is executing the bids as they come in on behalf of the internet bidders while she is also typing in the bid history for each lot. She will attempt to capture the bid history as accurately as possible, but in the event of a discrepancy, the auctioneer’s records are the official records of the auction.

Bob Owens (1939–2004)

Artist, Educator, and Keeper of the Southern Clay Tradition

Bob Owens was deeply rooted in Southern Appalachian clay. Born in 1939, he spent nearly four decades shaping the arts across the region - as a master potter, visionary educator, and community builder dedicated to preserving and passing on the craft.

Though formally trained, earning his MFA in ceramics from the University of Georgia under studio pottery revivalist Earl McCutchen, Bob remained closely connected to the folk traditions of Northeast Georgia. He was a friend and contemporary of Cheever, Arie, and Lanier Meaders, as well as well-known ceramicists Charles Counts, and Michael Sherrill.

Bob often said that “the soul of a pot came from the land and the stories it held.” That belief came through in all his work, from humble storage jars to bold religious sculptures expressing his faith and values. Bob created pieces that often blurred the lines between function and fine art. Some were playful, others austere, but all carried a unique and unmistakable reverence for place.

His home and studio in White County, Georgia became a creative gathering place for potters, collectors, students, and neighbors to learn, share, and celebrate the region’s ceramic heritage.

Bob was also a founding figure at North Georgia College (now the University of North Georgia), where he helped establish and grow the Fine Arts Department, mentoring generations of artists. Yet he always made time to roll up his sleeves and work the wheel, often giving demonstrations at festivals and craft schools across the South, including the John C. Campbell Folk School, Arrowmont, the Southern Highland Craft Guild, and many others.

His legacy lives on in both clay and community, from the pieces held by collectors and museums, including the Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia, Southern Highland Craft Guild, and the Thomas E. Scanlin Collection. The Bob Owens Professorship in Pottery and Sculpture was established at the University of North Georgia in his honor. He received many other honors during his lifetime, including a Georgia Governor’s Award in the Arts in 1985. However, Bob is best remembered for his quiet, steadfast belief in the power of art to connect people.

As the art world continues to celebrate the makers who shaped the Southern clay story, Bob Owens stands proudly among them.

Crawford Gillis (1914-2000, Alabama)

Born in rural Alabama, Gillis left the Deep South at 21 to study at the National Academy of Design in NYC. When he returned home, he began to create artwork based on the lives of everyday working people. He joined with other like-minded artist and exhibited as a member of the New South School, a Montgomery-based group dedicated to promoting Southern arts and culture. Gillis’ paintings can be described as part of American Scene Movement popular during the 1930’s. While the Social Realists of the Movement focused on Life in the City, Gillis was a Regionalist highlighting rural life. His barren landscapes and somber figures reflect the difficulty of living in the Depression-era South. The New South School disbanded as its members were called to serve in WWII. In 1941 Gillis was drafted into the armed services and awarded the Bronze Star. His work was included in the prestigious, New South, New Deal and Beyond exhibit sponsored by the Alabama State Council and is in prominent museums throughout the United States.

In the 1950s, Jesse Howard began covering his twenty-acre property in Fulton, Missouri, with biblical scenes and model airplanes decorated with patriotic messages, raising the ire of his neighbors. After numerous vandalizations of his works, Howard erected an ever-growing series of hand-lettered signs proclaiming his views of the world, predominantly interpretations of biblical verse, commentary on local and national politicians, and condemnation of vandals who stole his signs. Neat capital letters in black or red paint, set within carefully ruled lines on whitewashed wood or metal panels, spell out the artist’s outrage, the words often spilling over to the next line as if articulating a breathless screed. The site, which Howard called Sorehead Hill, was soon brimming with hundreds of works of art. His fence, house, yard, and several outbuildings overflowed; as signs were stolen, Howard made more. Despite the ongoing battles with his neighbors, his work achieved national recognition. When Howard died in 1983, the Kansas City Art Institute became the steward of his signs. It worked with Kohler Foundation, Inc., in 2016 to add 187 objects from its collection to the John Michael Kohler Arts Center’s holdings of Howard’s work.

This piece was discovered hidden inside a secret hole in an elderly man's mattress including a cigar box, a phallic entendre in itself - its humor hinges on the artist's clever recycling of popcultural detritus.
