Coping with COVID-19

“There has never been a global health emergency like COVID-19 in my lifetime. It seems to bring out the best and the worst in people. Being part of what is considered the high-risk group, my wife and I have limited our activities to the most essentials, focusing on caring for each other and staying in contact with our distant families using social media.”

“For thirty five years I worked as a groundskeeper at Hearst Castle, until March 2020 when Covid hit. My position was furloughed. I still woke up early but I had no routine. Fast forward to August. I retired permanently, and have actually acclimated to my new life. I’m enjoying the free time and the lack of plans. I'm spending more time on my own garden and hanging around with my cat, however, I cannot wait to blow off mask wearing.”

“Sometimes I feel claustrophobic, stressed, and miss my friends. My dad has been lucky and able to work, but my mom might have to close her beauty salon and I'm sad. I don't see my friends often but we always wear masks, even though we don't like them. Soccer was canceled, but games will resume in the fall with social distancing. When I look back at this, I will cry because I'm sad about all the people that have died during this pandemic.”

“This has been quite a trying time for me and just about everyone else that I speak with. I am feeling so broken hearted at all the devastation I am observing in the lives of so many others. Additionally, my heart aches for the terrible impact on all of creation. Please be sure to wear a mask to protect yourself and others. I am praying that we come up with a vaccine and cure for this virus very soon!”

“As a parent and teacher, I have changed how I engage students during distance learning. I check in on them via video conferencing and messages. Schedules and structure are important. I develop a schedule for my students as well as my children at home, including breaks. Chunking weekly work into doable pieces helps out. Encourage and complement children on their efforts and successes. This is only temporary. We can do it!”

James Karp Orcutt

“I miss restaurants and stores, and I do not like wearing a mask. But I do. I feel bad that others are having a hard time coping, but I know we all do the best we can. It’s great that we can still take walks in our wonderful weather and that keeps me happy. I cook more at home now but I miss being able to eat out with friends. I guess I am getting healthier though.”

“Initially, the pandemic was so shocking and surreal, the drastic changes that occurred in such a short period of time did not register. After having a realization that life would not be the same and may never go back to “normal,” I had a difficult time reconciling with this. In turn, I had to place my focus on what I should be thankful for, rather than what has been taken away. Through this change of perspective, I became grateful to live another day and gained a hope for the future that did not depend on our current circumstances.”

“COVID has affected us in numerous ways, there is no questioning that. This experience has inspired me to uphold a more positive attitude despite losing all control down to the matters of life and death. With so much negativity going on in the world, it is easy to find yourself wallowing in it unintentionally. I personally cannot stand anything that involves negativity. Early in May, I had open heart surgery and, by the grace of God, my recovery went phenomenally. This progress has been due to my hope and faith that as my health improves, so will the conditions of our current pandemic. In our darkest moments, even if we cannot see, there is a light at the end of the tunnel!”
