they've Got Your Back! by Diane Parnell Estero Bay Kindness Coalition fights hunger through a backpack program

The concept was simple: send backpacks full of donated food home with school children in need, to help bridge the hunger gap over the weekend.

Got Your Back was started in March, 2018 by Bobby DeLancellotti, the founder of Estero Bay Kindness Coalition (EBKC). The program initially served 10 students at Del Mar Elementary School, but grew quickly, and now serves over 200 students at eight elementary schools in the Estero Bay area. “When COVID-19 struck, we transitioned to home deliveries to meet the needs of the children and families we served prior to the pandemic,” DeLancellotti said. “We currently deliver two bags of groceries and fresh produce to 90 families every week.”

But he admits that EBKC does not have enough resources to fill their latest needs. “There are more hungry people than our organization is able to feed. We’ve outgrown my pick-up truck and are on a mission to obtain a larger vehicle so we can deliver to more families in a timely manner.”
