The Voice of Sustainability for the Central Coast...

Free Fall 2023

At SLO Veg, the old adage, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, doesn’t hold water. When you add up all the benefits of SLO Veg’s fresh and local fall harvest boxes, you see the benefits really are too good–the benefits that you and your family receive from the nutrient rich fruits and vegetables, picked daily by local farmers and delivered to your doorstep within 24 hours of harvest. On average, fruits and vegetables available at grocery stores travel 1,500 to 2,500 miles from farm to your plate. And even if they are stored in optimum temperatures, they continue to lose vitamins while on shelves. With SLO Veg produce boxes; you’re getting the nutrients and vitamins essential to keeping your immune system strong. Oh. and there’s the convenience of having your fresh and delicious harvest box delivered right to your doorstep!

“I love everything about this service. The flexible sizing of boxes, the flexible timing, the ease of vacation holds, and the graciousness of the service for starters. The produce itself arrives as pretty as a flower arrangement, gently handled and rather clean. I love our selection!”

“We have been happy SLO Veg members for 13 years. SLO Veg offers a fantastic variety of food that’s local and predominantly organic. Customer service is responsive and friendly, deliveries are reliable, and most importantly, the food is always beautiful, fresh, and delicious.”

let nature Inspire us!

Has our definition of wealth as the accumulation of material goods defeated the entire purpose of human relatedness to nature, and on a larger scale, the universe? Mystical experiences in nature give us the inspiration to work and change global habits and legislation. In 1903 when John Muir was sixtyfive, he was asked by President Theodore Roosevelt, to guide Roosevelt personally through Yosemite. Muir made him a bed of criss-crossed evergreen boughs. “It was clear weather, and we lay in the open.” Roosevelt noted, “the enormous cinnamon-colored trunks rising above us like columns of a vaster and more beautiful cathedral that was ever conceived by a human architect.” In 1906 Theodore Roosevelt signed into law Yosemite National Park. Bringing inspired change into our homes, offices, schools and farms, would change us from users into appreciators.

Solstice Green Directory Mission: To provide information on environmental issues and ways to address concerns of residents on the Central Coast. We received many calls (mostly from the ladies!) wanting to know who the "cool looking surfer guy" on the front cover of our Summer edition was. Sorry but he is a stock photo image and we are glad you liked him!

Paddles Up... take it away!

In unison, 20 paddles dig deep into the water of Morro Bay, and a 40-foot-long dragon boat glides forward, powered by teamwork and pure joy; this is the sport of dragon boat racing.

The Central Coast SurviveOars is a dragon boat team of cancer survivors, friends and community members; 119 paddlers strong. In 2023, paddlers competed in dragon boat festivals in Marina Del Rey, Castaic Lake and New Zealand. A team of cancer survivors, men and women, won a gold medal and two silver medals at the Club Crew National Championships in Sarasota, Florida July 20-23.

The team is a program of the nonprofit organization Central Coast Dragon Boat Association (CCDBA). CCDBA welcomes paddlers of all ages and genders on three dragon boats: Dragon Dancer,

Rosana’s Ride, and a small boat for 10 paddlers, Puff. Whether they compete at race festivals or not, all paddlers benefit from the team camaraderie, the full-body workout, and the natural beauty of the water, birds and sea life of Morro Bay. On special occasions, the dragon boats are ‘dressed’ with dragon heads and tails, an amazing sight to see on the water! Dragon Boat racing is one of the fastest-growing international sports, with teams throughout the United States, Canada and 60 other countries. The sport began in China

2,500 years ago along the Yangtze River, as a summer ritual to appease the rain gods. In Chinese mythology, the dragon is the controller of the rain, the river, the sea, and all water.

Ciders

Hard ciders are making a big splash in the world of potent potables. There are about half a dozen cideries on the Central Coast, and more-and-more restaurants are offering ciders as part of their beverage programs.

If the word “cider” brings to mind a cloying beverage, you owe it to yourself to check out the new crop of quaffables. While there are still sweet ciders on the market, many emerging craft brands are crisp and dry. That’s a plus if you really want to taste the fruit, by the way. When a cider is too sweet, that’s the only dimension you’ll taste. The drier versions will offer flavor nuances just as a wine would.

As with wine and beer, hard cider is made by adding yeast to juice so it ferments. And, like those beverages, it can exhibit a variety of styles: from still to sparkling and all the stops in between. In terms of alcohol, most hard ciders will be akin to strong beers or lighter wines – typically about 7-8%. What cider doesn’t share with most

beers is gluten, so it’s a good option for those with dietary issues.

Cider can be made with any kind of apple, though taking a bite out of some of the dedicated cider varieties will leave you with quite a pucker. It can also be made with less-than-perfect fruit, making it a good way to cut down on food waste.

Other fruits can also be used for cideradjacent beverages, though technically they can’t be called “cider.” For example, if crafted with stone fruit such as plums and nectarines, they’re called “jerkums.” And if made with pears, well you’ve got yourself an appropriatelynamed “perry!”

10 Signs and Symptoms

Not to Ignore...

It can sometimes be hard to know when to seek help. Here is a quick list of events that require evaluation by a professional:

1) Headache: If you have a headache and you heard yourself say “This is the worst headache I have ever had,” go to the ER. 2) Dental Hygiene: Cracked or broken tooth? See a Dentist. 3) Shortness of Breath: If you suddenly cannot do your normal activities such as walking up stairs, walking across a room or are struggling to speak, call 911 or go to the nearest ER. 4) Blood Pressure: Everyone should have a blood pressure monitor at home and check their blood pressure regularly. Ideally, your Blood Pressure should be around 120/70 (with or without medication). If your upper (systolic) number is 160 mmHg or your lower (diastolic) number is 90 mmHg, this needs to be discussed with your Primary Care Physician. An ER visit is a must if the upper number is 180 mmHg or the lower number is 100 mm Hg.

5) Chest Pressure/Pain/Nausea: These three symptoms together especially with shortness of breath, go to the ER. It is better to be in an ER and wrong about a heart attack, than not go and be right. 6) Piercing Stomach

Pain that persists: See your Primary Care Physician or an ER if severe.

7) Injuries: If you’ve had a fall that yields an inability to bear weight or the injured area swells and bruises immediately, you need an X-Ray.

8) Bleeding: Rectal, vaginal (if already menopausal), or bladder. Any amount needs evaluation by your Primary Care Physician. If it seems like “a lot,” go to the ER. 9) Weight loss: Unplanned, unexplained weight loss always needs evaluation. See your Primary Care Physician as soon as possible.

10) Swelling, Pain and Redness: If in one extremity only without a history of injury, you need an Ultrasound, go to Urgent Care or the ER. This list in not comprehensive. If you have any doubt about a symptom, it is always best to have it checked by a professional.

Mushy bananas?

Solution: Wrap tops of bananas in plastic wrap. A handful of fruits emit ethylene gas to ripen themselves, and bananas are one of them. If you know you won’t be able to eat the entire bunch within a few days, simply wrap the stems (where most of the gas is released) tightly in plastic wrap. This helps reduce the amount of ethylene emitted, slowing the ripening process and keeping the fruit fresh for a longer period of time. The gas also causes other fruits and veggies to ripen more quickly, so this trick will help prevent nearby produce from going bad as well. Like bananas, cantaloupe, nectarines, pears, plums, and tomatoes also emit ethylene gas and should be stored away from other produce.

roads paved in Coffee Grounds?

Researchers in Australia have discovered an amazing use for the 22 billion pounds of coffee waste the world produces each year. According to them, concrete could be thirty percent stronger if charred coffee grounds were added to the mix.

“Our research is in the early stages, but these exciting findings offer an innovative way to greatly reduce the amount of organic waste that goes to landfill,” says RMIT engineer Shannon Kilmartin-Lynch.

This new concrete recipe could also help slow the depletion of sand from our planet. As the need for resource-intensive concrete accelerates, substituting coffee grounds for sand could be the answer to this dilemma.

“The ongoing extraction of natural sand around the world to meet the rapidly growing demands of the construction industry has a big impact on the environment,” according to RMIT engineer Jie Li. “There are critical and long-lasting challenges in maintaining a sustainable supply of sand due to the finite nature of resources.”

The researchers caution that they still need to assess the long term durability of their cement product, but are encouraged by the results thus far. Anyone for an Espresso Expressway?

Holiday Weight Gain?

Many Americans will gain from 1-5 lbs. over the holidays. Even though this is a relatively small amount, if they don't lose it again afterwards they can find themselves steadily gaining weight over the years. Here are some tips:

1) Eat as much unprocessed food as possible. This gives you more fiber which makes you feel full quicker. Think raw or steamed, sauteed or baked veggies. Snack on crudites such as raw carrots or celery. Try to avoid snacking and have 2-3 meals a day. 2) Stay hydrated. Drink half your body weight in pounds in oz. of water daily. Sometimes we feel hungrier when part of that is thirst. If you have to have a flavor water, cut up lemons, cucumbers or ginger and let it infuse into the water. 3) If dinner is going to be your biggest meal of the day, try to finish eating by at least 3 hours before you go to bed. 4) Take a little walk or exercise every day. This helps to reduce your hunger and improve digestion and elimination. It also helps to lower your insulin levels if done after eating and improves blood sugar regulation and this tends to prevent weight gain. 5) Don't sacrifice your sleep for a hectic holiday schedule. Getting enough sleep at regular hours is also important. It will help avoid hunger pangs late at night. You will feel less stressed, have more energy and a healthier immune system. 6) Eat healthy fats like avocados and nuts (within reason) and you will not gain weight from them. A likely cause of weight gain is grain-based carbohydrates (especially those containing gluten) and sugar, so if you are going to indulge in holiday cakes, pies, cookies, etc., just have a little, chew it slowly and savor it. www.dramadi.com

A Greener Military

The Department of Defense produces the most carbon emissions of any single institution in the world. Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, which has been working for years to build its renewable capacity, is the first in the military to reach its net-zero goal. Power plants generate electricity from natural gas captured at a nearby landfill, and from discarded tree bark and sawdust from a neighboring paper factory. Top Pentagon leaders say the Albany base, which is a hub for equipment going to and from Marine Corps deployments around the world, is a test project for the future of the military. Renewable energy on bases makes them more resilient and less prone to blackouts from the civilian grid. The Department of Defense accounts for 56 percent of the federal government’s emissions and 52 percent of its electricity use, so any effort to reduce the federal carbon footprint needs to take on the military. The base is also starting to electrify its fleet of noncombat vehicles, along with the rest of the military. A recently passed bill for the first time imposed a requirement to electrify all noncombat military vehicles by 2035. Other bases are also working to become more sustainable. They are building microgrids. The Air Force is investing in new fuel-efficient airplane designs. The Pentagon’s research divisions are also working on small nuclear reactors that can help provide emissions-free power to bases in remote locations.

what to do with

Autumn Leaves

1) Make a garden path: Mix whole leaves with gravel or wood chips to create a dry, weed-blocking path through garden spaces. 2) Make mulch: Shredded leaves are a perfect organic mulch. The leaves can limit weeds and help retain winter moisture. In mild climates, a bed of leaves can insulate some tender plants from winter’s chills. 3) Mix leaves into the soil: If you don't plan to maintain the vegetable garden or annual flower beds through winter, till shredded leaves into the garden. The decomposing leaves will add nutrients, boost the organic content, improve the soil structure, and encourage earthworms and other beneficial creatures 4) Add to compost heap: If you are already composting, you can make an even more valuable soil amendment by adding shredded leaves to the compost bin or pile. 5) Save for spring compost: If you are composting your autumn leaves, you may also consider saving a couple of

bags of leaves. “Brown” carbon-rich materials can be tough to find in the spring and summer. 6) Feed the lawn (judiciously): Once the leaves have decomposed, the compost is great for the lawn. By the same token, a thin layer of shredded leaves can break down over the winter and provide some nutrients to the grass. 7) Entertain the kids: Most young children would have listed “jump into them” at the top of this list of uses for fall leaves. To make leaf ghosts, glue googly eyes, sequins and other decorations to large, colorful leaves. Kids can also make beautiful place mats by simply pressing leaves between two books, arranging them on a board and holding them in place with contact paper. 8) Make fall decorations: Fall leaves are a great addition to Halloween displays. There are also plenty of other ways to incorporate the beautiful colors of fall into decorations such as wreaths, window boxes and imitation stained glass.

healthy Aging... Health News

While aging is inevitable, there are steps you can take to live a long and vigorous life. The main goal is to extend the number of healthy and active years. There are many factors that contribute to healthy aging. Genetics is an area where you do not have control, but knowledge of your family history will help with your health journey. The areas we do have control of are diet and physical activity.

A Nurses’ Health Study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), analyzed 75,230 women from 1984–2020, and found a significant association between healthy

eating habits and a 20% risk reduction of early death. The core principle of a healthy diet is consuming little to no highly processed foods. Processed meats are particularly unhealthy. The World Health Organization has classified processed meats including ham, bacon, salami and frankfurts as a Group 1 carcinogen. Eating processed meat increases your risk of bowel and stomach cancer. Focus on a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy, lean meats, fish, eggs, and nuts. Plus, as women age there are super foods that complement their healthy diet. These include, berries, dark green leafy vegetables, avocados, nuts and seeds, beans, and legumes. Some women may like to add seafood and dairy such as cottage cheese to their diets. These provide protein that help maintain muscle. There is a wide variety of foods to include in a healthy diet. surprising benefits of Walking... for Women

It should not come as a surprise that walking regularly is beneficial in maintaining good health. A recent report in Harvard Health Publishing confirms the known benefits and it added five more that may surprise you.

Walking briskly for about an hour a day, counteracts the effects of weight – promoting genes. It can soothe a sweet tooth. A pair of studies from the University of Exeter found that a 15-minute walk can curb cravings for chocolate and even reduce the amount of chocolate you eat in stressful situations. It reduces the risk of developing breast cancer. According to an American Cancer Society study, women who walked seven or more hours a week had a 14% lower risk of breast cancer than those who walked three hours or fewer a week. Walking eases joint pain and even protects the joints – especially the knees and hips. And finally, walking regularly boosts the immune system. So, what are you waiting for? Get your walking shoes on and improve your health!

what exactly is Lab Grown Meat?

In a nutshell, it’s meat that is grown from animal cells in a controlled environment. The cells are taken from a living animal. Instead, they are grown in a bioreactor, which is a large tank that provides the cells with the nutrients they need to grow, such as amino acids. Lab meat has several potential benefits over traditional meat. First, it is more humane. Animals raised for food are often subjected to cruel and inhumane treatment. Lab-grown meat eliminates the need for animal slaughter, so it is a more ethical way to produce meat. Second, lab-produced meat is better for the environment. Traditional meat production is a major contributor to climate change. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), livestock production accounts for 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Third, lab-grown meat can be customized to meet the needs of

individual consumers. For example, people allergic to certain foods can have lab-grown meat free of those allergens. As the global population continues to grow, the demand for meat is also increasing. Lab-grown meat may provide a way to meet this demand without increasing the number of animals raised for food. Lab-developed meat could also help to improve food safety. Traditional meat production can be a breeding ground for bacteria like E. coli. On the other hand, lab-grown meat is grown in a controlled environment, making it less likely to become contaminated. Lab-grown meat has the potential to be a more humane, environmentally friendly, and a better controlled way to produce meat. As technology improves, lab-grown meat will likely become more affordable and accepted by consumers.

Incandescent ban begins...

The rule, which effectively cemented the switch to LED lights for most consumers, was finalized last year, but it is making headlines again as the government will now fully penalize industry violations. Nobody is coming into your house to rip any remaining incandescent bulbs from your shelf. The Energy Department rule will penalize violators who stand to profit, including manufacturers, distributors and retailers, not consumers. The rules are expected to be a positive for the planet. The Energy Department projects that over the course of 30 years, they will cut carbon emissions by 222 million metric tons. This is the equivalent of the carbon dioxide emissions generated by about 28 million homes in one year. The emissions reductions would come as a result of the smaller amount of energy needed to power LED bulbs than incandescent bulbs. The Energy Department projects the proposed rules will save consumers nearly $3 billion per year on their utility bills and also provide savings for households, schools and businesses. Americans may also have to buy fewer light bulbs because LED bulbs can last between 25 and 50 times longer than incandescent bulbs, according to the department.

Fall Support 3 ayurvedic tips

The Fall Season brings the wind element (Air) into the picture, and it is a transitional season. If we consider the Ayurvedic principle that opposites balance, Vata season will be less aggravating if you fill it with warmth, oiliness, deep nourishment, loving relationships, and a sense of stability and routine. Here are 3 Ayurvedic tips to help you maintain your warm balance!

1) Favor warm foods. Substantive, oily, nourishing foods that are high in protein, high in fat, brought to life with warming, stimulating spices, and served hot, will help your body to stay warm and grounded through this season.

2) Oil up. Massage your skin with warm, organic herbal oil. It

will help calm your nervous system, awaken your tissues, and ground your energy by massaging your skin, followed by a warm, relaxing shower.

3) Perform a cleanse. Fall is the perfect time for a gentle detox through a combination of dietary guidelines, herbal formulations, and supplements to enhance digestion and support toxin removal.

helpful tips to acquire skills for

The last few months of extreme weather incidents have been a devastating reminder of the damage the climate change crisis is inflicting on communities around the world. Over the next decade, we expect to see millions of new jobs created globally due to new climate policies and commitments. A green job refers to any job that contributes to preserving or enhancing the wellbeing, culture and governance of current and future generations, as well as regenerating the natural resources and ecosystems upon which we all rely.

The International Labor Organization (ILO) estimates that 24 million jobs worldwide could be created by the green economy by 2030 alone. On LinkedIn, we can see that the shift to hiring for the green economy is already underway worldwide. Since 2017, we’ve seen the demand for talent with green skills

steadily increase as governments and companies step up their commitments and actions to achieve their climate and sustainability goals. As the urgency for sustainable solutions intensifies, employers are placing a greater emphasis on hiring individuals equipped with the necessary skills to tackle environmental and social challenges head-on. Candidates who possess an awareness of pressing environmental challenges, along with knowledge about climate change’s impact, energy conservation, waste reduction, and biodiversity preservation,

Green Jobs

will be in high demand. Employers are actively seeking professionals who can design, develop, and manage renewable energy systems, such as solar, wind, and hydro. Proficiency in renewable energy technologies and the ability to work with sustainable energy sources are considered indispensable. Skills in green finance, sustainable supply chain management, circular economy, and sustainable marketing are highly valued.

While resumes are important for presenting your qualifications, there are other effective ways to stand out among potential employers. Here are a few ideas to help: 1) Consider building a portfolio that highlights your work and achievements in the green industry.

2) Participate in initiatives such as community gardens, environmental clean-ups, or sustainability-focused

organizations to enhance your practical experience and showcase your dedication to making a positive impact.

3) Utilize platforms like LinkedIn, industry-specific forums, and social media to display your knowledge, engage in meaningful discussions, and establish yourself as an authority in the green sector. 4) Attend industry conferences, seminars, and workshops to connect with like-minded professionals, expand your knowledge, and build relationships. Networking still remains a valuable tool for making contacts. 5) Consider offering to speak at conferences, seminars, or community events on topics related to sustainability, renewable energy, or environmental conservation.

If you’re not ready to go back to school, the green energy sector has “new collar” jobs that don’t require a traditional four-year degree and instead allow workers to gain skills through onthe-job training or apprenticeships Take steps to position yourself as a highly valuable asset. This will allow you to make a good impression.
