Microbe

managing!

by Gary E. Foresman, MD

Our modern world’s obsessive fear of all things microbial is unwarranted and may be harmful. For example, if you think hand sanitizer helps your immunity, you’ve been misled. They can create great harm to you and all those around you, primarily due to their overuse.

Routine use of hand sanitizers breaks down the normal protective skin barriers, part of your innate immunity, while seriously disrupting the normal commensal flora, part of your acquired immunity. This habit is one of the great causes of infectious disease and susceptibility to toxin exposure that you can create for yourself. The occasional use in hospital settings and known contaminated environments remains appropriate. Viruses are little bundles of RNA or DNA that can’t live without you. Meaning, they represent pockets of energy and information meant to educate you and inform you! It is understood that a healthy person can still acquire infections but be the better for it as it is reflected in the history of Western medicine. Lessons from infections can be tough and uncomfortable but are needed at times as a wake-up call to be mindful of utilizing healthy lifestyle strategies to rebuild and maintain our immunity as well as protect our terrain. Microbes are a critical component of our terrain! In lieu of utilizing sanitizers that can harm our bodies, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water and be proactive in building your immune system naturally by living a healthy lifestyle.

try Floor Traction Grip so your Dogs Won't Slip!

by Sandy Rakowitz

Here are 7 easy ways to prevent slips and fall injuries on hardwood floors, smooth surfaces, or stairs for pups and seniors dogs: 1) Paw Pads - Dry, cracked or worn down paw pads can’t grip the floor. Look for a paw balm to rub into paw pads daily. 2) Nail Trim - Your anti-slip solution could be as simple as giving your dog’s nails a trim. 3) Hairy Feet Trim - A quick haircut could improve traction on slippery floors. 4) Use Rug Runners for easy gripping and soft spot to land. 5) Try Doggie Boots designed to help your dog gain traction on various indoor and outdoor terrain. 6) Use Yoga Mats for non-slip walkways. 7) Try Dog Socks with Grippers so there is no more sliding across the floor.

Ron and Peggy Carlock have rich family histories in retail here on the Central Coast. Ron’s family owned several well known bakeries in Arroyo Grande and Pismo Beach and Peggy’s family owned grocery stores here in the area before the “big box” stores moved in. 1972 was a significant year for both Ron and Peggy. They both graduated from Cal Poly and got married that same year. Ron has a degree in Horticulture and Peggy a degree in Liberal Arts. She recently retired after teaching 50 years in elementary school for the Lucia Mar School District.

Ron remembers working in his family home garden and discovered a love of gardening at the age of 16. He got his first job and worked for Chapman’s Nursery in 1966. In 1983, Ron’s Nursery opened up at it’s first location on 13th St. in Grover Beach across from Okui’s Fruit Stand next to their large strawberry field. After 28 years, they endured a few “bumps”and eventually moved to Arroyo Grande in it’s new and best location on Halcyon at the General Store. Ron is grateful for his new location and says, “It’s my favorite spot.” He continues, “the field across our new location was planted with strawberries coming full circle back to having strawberries across the way.” When you come to visit the new location at 936 S. Halcyon Rd., you will know exactly what he means. It’s an inspiring haven and a retreat. One customer exclaimed, “I am moving in and going to set up my bed over there in the corner!”
