At SLO Veg, a Central Coast family owned produce delivery service, you and your family receive nutrient rich produce picked daily by local farmers and delivered to your doorstep within 24 hours of harvest. Everything tastes better because it’s picked at peak ripeness, and packed with essential nutrients. Fruits and vegetables available at grocery stores travel on average 1,500 to 2,500 miles from farm to your plate. So, let’s add up the benefits of fresh harvest produce boxes from SLO Veg: better tasting produce packed with vitamins and nutrients picked by local farmers and delivered directly to your doorstep. They also offer pick up locations from Paso Robles to Nipomo each week. One more thing: buying from local farmers produces a much smaller carbon footprint, and Mother Earth appreciates that!

The great poetess, Maya Angelou said: "Every storm runs out of rain." It sure feels like our outer world is in chaos and that we are all being held prisoner by it. This is a global experience. There is also a sense of utter helplessness that we are unable to stop it, change it or even fix it. Can you feel it too? I personally find some quiet and peace inwardly by working with my plants, talking to the flowers, and even tiny bugs. I find myself thanking them for their quiet, unassuming beauty and their role in this web of life. Even the nearby trees and I have developed a loving relationship, and they know how much I appreciate them and all that they do for all of us. I find sanity in the woods, walking on the beach and just finding a quiet place to be alone with nature. A newly formed friendship with an extended family of nearby squirrels also gives me a much needed sense of balance and peace. These small "islands" that soothe and help maintain a semi-equilibrium as this "storm" consumes us is so important. There are things that will help you, too. If you can focus on what they are and honor them daily, it will help. Even making a cup of your favorite herbal tea can soothe nervous systems in a matter of minutes, and that calm may last for hours. Every storm runs out of rain...let's get through this...for now.

The weather will soon be getting cooler and more gatherings of people will be held indoors. This is typically the time when more respiratory viruses will be circulating. Here are some tips on keeping your immune system strong:

keeping your Immune System

strong...

1) Limit or avoid sugar. Sugar cuts down on white blood cells' ability to engulf and kill germs and it is dose-related: the more sugar that is ingested, the fewer germs each white blood cell can kill. 2) Make sure to get enough sleep! Sleep strengthens the immune system and is necessary for the body to repair itself. The days are naturally shorter in the fall and winter and we should take our cue from nature and go to bed earlier. 3) Keep doing some daily exercise. Exercise enhances our circulation and enables our white blood cells and antibodies to reach the germs that they are designed to

target. In addition, exercise helps us manage our stress, which is really important in order to have a strong immune system. 4) Eat foods that contain beta carotene. These are generally orange in color, like carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkins and other squash. 5) Eat foods that contain vitamin C. Good examples of these are the citrus fruits, like oranges and grapefruit. Vitamin C inhibits the replication of viruses and strengthens the connective tissue. 6) Dress appropriately for the weather and drink warm liquids like herbal teas. 7) Be mindful of your food consumption during the holidays. Don't overdo and try to leave at least 3 hours between your last bite of food and when you go to bed. This will improve your digestion and help prevent the weight gain that often accompanies the major holidays. www.dramadi.com

Onozuka, who started her business in 2009, attributes her success to being dependable, honest, and trustworthy, as well as the personal attention she gives to her clients. Using eco-conscious

materials, and learning about biohazard materials and infectious disease helps keep her clients safer. She engages in continuing education on best practices for cleaning, and gets certified each year through ISSA, the worldwide cleaning industry association that has the highest standards in the industry. “I love the service industry. I enjoy getting to know my clients, and customizing their cleaning needs, and have become friends with many of my clients,” Onozuka says.

Her passion for cleaning extends to volunteer work through communitybased environmental projects such as the annual ‘Creeks to Coast’ cleanup sponsored by ECOSLO. Onozuka believes that keeping healthy and fit allows her to do her job so well. “It is the most important aspect of my job,” she says. “By taking care of myself, I can take good care of my clients.”

What makes sponges from The Luffa Farm unique? Luffas grown and harvested at The Luffa Farm in Nipomo are heirlooms and do not go through a harsh treatment that can make the sponges tough. The result is a soft, washable non-abrasive plant-based sponge. Deanne, the owner of the The Luffa Farm began growing Luffas as a hobby over 30 years ago. In 1999, she decided to start a business growing and selling luffas and handcrafted bath and herbal products in retail outlets.

The Luffa Farm quickly became a local curiosity and Deanne decided to open up to the public and offer free tours, no reservations needed. Bring your friends and family by to learn about luffas, explore the unique gardens, or shop at The Luffa Farm!

it's all about trees...

at California ReLeaf

The golden state of California stands with communities wanting to preserve and enhance their green corridors. One group focuses specifically on trees. California ReLeaf promotes alliances among community-based groups, individuals and government agencies, encouraging them to plant and care for trees. Its grant program increases access to urban forestry funding by providing grants to community groups. Locally, Greening Los Osos has partnered with California ReLeaf to plant trees in open space surrounding the town. During the summer, California ReLeaf partnered with Save Our Water and urban forest groups across the state to bring awareness to the importance of tree care while cutting back on outdoor water use.

Here are some tips on caring for your trees while cutting back on water: 1) Deeply and slowly water mature trees 1 to 2 times per month toward the edge of the tree canopy – NOT at the base of the tree. 2) Use recycled water to care for your trees. Shower with a bucket and use that water for trees and plants, as long as it is free of non-biodegradable soap. 3) Don’t over-prune tree during drought. Too much pruning and drought stress trees. 4) Mulch! 4 to 6 inches of mulch helps retain moisture, reducing water needs and protecting trees. 5) Watch the weather and let Mother Nature handle watering if rain is in the forecast.

For more information on tree care and programs offered by California ReLeaf, log in to www.californiareleaf.org

And, while most recipes call for a significant amount of water to cook pasta, you can use much less by using a little elbow grease. The movement created by a large amount of boiling water helps keep the pasta from sticking together. You can achieve the same effect just by stirring the pasta until the boil recovers and takes over for you. An added benefit of this method is that the resulting water will be starchier than usual, making it all the better for thickening your sauce!

It takes water to grow food, so one of the easiest ways to save water is simply to not waste food. Make a point of organizing your daily recipes to use up what you already have in your fridge. If something is about to go bad – freeze it for stock, or start a compost bin, or find a friend with chickens.

Kitchen Tips for Saving Water

Do you save your shower water as it’s heating up? The same concept can work in the kitchen. Dedicate a pot to collect that water and use it for houseplants or even your pet’s water bowl. (If you use environmentally-friendly soap, you may also be able to use gently used dishwater on your garden; it’s not advisable for food plants, but your ornamentals can handle a bit of suds.)

With California in a severe drought, it’s up to each of us to conserve as much water as possible, especially in the kitchen.

minutes or until mushrooms and onion are tender. Add tomato paste, tomato sauce, and tomatoes, cooking at least 10 minutes. Mix egg, spinach, ricotta cheese, Parmesan cheese (optional), parsley, and pepper. Add enough milk (or almond milk) to make ricotta cheese mixture creamy. Spread a layer of spaghetti sauce over the bottom of a 4 to 6 qt crock pot. Layer 4 noodles, broken into pieces to fit, then add a layer of spaghetti sauce mixture followed by a layer of ricotta cheese mixture, sprinkling half of mozzarella cheese over ricotta cheese mixture. Repeat layers. Cover and cook on low setting 4 to 6 hours.

Save water by taking shorter showers instead of baths. A family of four can save nearly 300 gallons more a month by installing a water-efficient shower head. By pressurizing water more highly, you sacrifice no water flow and save money as well as water. If you have a faucet that drips, fix it! Just by dripping every other second, a leaky faucet can send 80 gallons of water down the drain each month. Also, hot water is a major source of energy costs. Use cold water when possible. This lowers the environmental impact and carbon emissions from regular activities like doing the laundry.

Pour the almond oil into bottle. Add 30 drops of your chosen essential oil or blend. Using the scissors, remove the pointy end from each bamboo skewer. Insert one bamboo skewer into the bottle and stir to combine. Pop the remaining skewers into the bottle and leave for several hours. Lift all skewers out, turn them upside down and place the unscented ends into the bottle, leaving the scented ends on display. Repeat this last step every two to three days. Refresh the oil and essential oils once a month. Blends, such as chamomile and orange, eucalyptus and lemon, rose geranium and lavender, rosemary, sage and lavender are nice. Sweet almond oil is the best carrier oil for reed diffusers, though you can also use safflower oil.

Caring for Your Garden during a drought...

Re-Purpose Wasted Kitchen Water: Instead of letting the water run down the drain, collect the water for your thirsty plants. You can also use water that was used for boiling food (unsalted) but be sure to let it cool first. Consider placing bins or buckets near your shower so you can collect water that would otherwise go down the drain. Mulch the Soil: It will help the soil retain more water rather than allowing the sun to dry it out. Try a variety of organic materials for mulching, including straw, newspaper, grass clippings and wood chips. When

done right, mulch can minimize weed growth and increase your yield too. Use Soaker Hoses: If water conservation restrictions aren’t preventing you from using city water in your garden, soaker hoses are great. They slowly drip moisture into dry soil, making sure that water gets into the soil and plant roots rather than running off where you don’t need it. If you have an old hose you’re not using, just poke small holes every six inches and attach a hose cap to the open end to block the water flow. This design will allow the water to drip out evenly. Be sure not to make the holes too large.

So many areas are experiencing drought during this time, including the Central Coast. Here are a few things you can do to help:

Autumn is a time to reflect upon one’s soul, spirituality, and the clearing of toxins physically and emotionally.

Lung Qi resides in our lungs. Visualize a white light to represent your truth and set aside time to reflect, detox, create your vision. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) recommends cleansing in Autumn including herbs, acupuncture, massage, sauna, dry brushing, exercise, breath work, yoga, and food instruction. These practices will help you through the change of seasons, physically and emotionally. Strengthening the core immunity (Zheng Qi) as well as the superficial protective energy barrier (Wei Qi) will enable you to feel strong and able to ward off cold and flu, have full vitality, and feel at peace within. If you are feeling run down, unmotivated, stressed, “blah,” please consider uplifting your mind/ body/spirit this Autumn season. You will feel a renovation in your body which can help you feel clarity, energy, joy, and good health! Happy Autumn!

Our modern world’s obsessive fear of all things microbial is unwarranted and may be harmful. For example, if you think hand sanitizer helps your immunity, you’ve been misled. They can create great harm to you and all those around you, primarily due to their overuse.

appropriate. Viruses are little bundles of RNA or DNA that can’t live without you. Meaning, they represent pockets of energy and information meant to educate you and inform you! It is understood that a healthy person can still acquire infections but be the better for it as it is reflected in the history of Western medicine. Lessons from infections can be tough and uncomfortable but are needed at times as a wake-up call to be mindful of utilizing healthy lifestyle strategies to rebuild and maintain our immunity as well as protect our terrain. Microbes are a critical component of our terrain! In lieu of utilizing sanitizers that can harm our bodies, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water and be proactive in building your immune system naturally by living a healthy lifestyle.

Routine use of hand sanitizers breaks down the normal protective skin barriers, part of your innate immunity, while seriously disrupting the normal commensal flora, part of your acquired immunity. This habit is one of the great causes of infectious disease and susceptibility to toxin exposure that you can create for yourself. Ron and Peggy Carlock have rich family histories in retail here on the Central Coast. Ron’s family owned several well known bakeries in Arroyo Grande and Pismo Beach and Peggy’s family owned grocery stores here in the area before the “big box” stores moved in. 1972 was a significant year for both Ron and Peggy. They both graduated from Cal Poly and got married that same year. Ron has a degree in Horticulture and Peggy a degree in Liberal Arts. She recently retired after teaching 50 years in elementary school for the Lucia Mar School District. Ron remembers working in his family home garden and discovered a love of gardening at the age of 16. He got his first job and worked for Chapman’s Nursery in 1966. In 1983, Ron’s Nursery opened up at it’s first location on 13th St. in Grover Beach across from Okui’s Fruit Stand next to their large strawberry field. After 28 years, they endured a few “bumps”and eventually moved to Arroyo Grande in it’s new and best location on Halcyon at the General Store. Ron is grateful for his new location and says, “It’s my favorite spot.” He continues, “the field across our new location was planted with strawberries coming full circle back to having strawberries across the way.” When you come to visit the new location at 936 S. Halcyon Rd., you will know exactly what he means. It’s an inspiring haven and a retreat. One customer exclaimed, “I am moving in and going to set up my bed over there in the corner!”

For those who drink tea, there are many ways one may reuse the tea bags instead of disposing of them. The following are some examples: • Reuse a tea bag by breaking it and feeding outdoor plant(s) by sprinkling the tea around the soil. This increases nitrogen levels and also gives earthworms (fertilizer) something delicious to eat. Also, the tea bags are great organic fertilizer for potted house plants. • Use an alternative to baking soda as a deodorizer by placing a used tea bag in a porous container, like a cotton bag, and let the tea absorb the odors of the refrigerator. Also, by emptying the used tea bags in your vacuum cleaner, the next time you vacuum your carpet will

smell nice. • Effectively remove grease and grime on mirrors, floors, and even linoleum by using your old tea bags. Make a cold brew, with your used teabags and then use it as a cleaning solution, i.e. on counter tops, etc. • Add used teabags to the compost pile. Some teabags compost faster than others depending on the bag material. You can also bury the bag in the ground for the enhancement of soil. In our day-to-day life, there are many ways to be environmentally friendly and this tip regarding reuse of tea bags is just one of them. May we continue to reuse, reduce, recycle, and conserve the goods of our sister, Mother Earth.

Most health experts agree that the first line of defense is to choose a healthy lifestyle which involves eating "a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low in saturated fat." They also suggest avoiding stress, since it has been linked to immune system disruption. Here are some tips:

due to the belief that a high-heat process diminishes the overall nutrient value of certain foods). Raw foods are excellent ways to maintain a strong immune system. Drink water. Since a significant portion of our body is water, proper hydration is important. It's a healthy way to flush out toxins and maintain excellent blood flow. Eat garlic. Garlic has been shown to help fight infection, playing a role in everything from staving off the common cold to fighting cancers. Studies have shown that adding garlic to meals on a regular basis may deter the development of pre-cancerous colon and digestive tract lesions. It's considered nature's natural antibiotic, brimming with anti-viral and anti-

bacterial compounds. Get rest. The body repairs itself best when it is at rest, allowing the immune system to function at ideal levels so it can essentially help recharge the body. Think about people who lack sleep. Often, they develop colds more often and are more susceptible to illnesses. So important is sleep that even the Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention (CDC) is on board noting that "insufficient sleep is an important public health concern." Get some sunlight. Getting vitamin D from the sun does wonders for the body. In fact, the aforementioned Harvard University health specialists explain that vitamin D has been known to help people with tuberculosis. Apparently, vitamin D triggers an antimicrobial response to the bacterium responsible for tuberculosis, helping to combat the condition. Treating the body well by enjoying healthy kinds of food and drink, while also getting plenty of sunlight and rest are keys to boosting the immune system.

While grass seems like a logical landscape solution, it's waterintensive, and high-maintenance. So, if you're trying to cut down on grassmaintenance costs without sacrificing the luscious green landscape, there is a way out. A few alternatives are easier on your wallet, health, and the environment. The most sustainable options include moss beds, clover, sedum plants, creeping thyme, chamomile, and Corsican mint.

Similarly, you can go with an eco-lawn with wood chippings and gravel. If everything else fails, create a mini wildflower meadow by letting native plants and flowers take over. Don't forget to plant trees around your home. The larger your garden, the more trees you should grow, including fruit trees, which provide more shade, translating to lower energy bills. Here's a bonus: a little orchard can also offer you mouthwatering fruits!

Gratitude. A study from the University of Pennsylvania found that people who wrote and delivered a heartfelt thank-you letter actually felt happier for a full month after, and the same researchers discovered that writing down three positive events each day for a week kept happiness levels high for up to six months. By writing down positive things that happen to you and actively acknowledging those who have helped you, you become better at recognizing the good in your life, which naturally helps you feel more grateful and thankful more often. According to researchers at Eastern Washington University, there are four primary characteristics of grateful people, and these are the ones that thank-you notes and a gratitude journal can help tap, strengthen, and invigorate. People who experience the most gratitude and therefore the positive effects tend to: 1) Feel a sense of abundance in their lives. 2) Appreciate the contributions of others to their well-being. 3) Recognize and enjoy life's small pleasures. 4) Acknowledge the importance of experiencing and expressing gratitude. 5) Acknowledging these things on paper, with words, or even in your thoughts will help you boost happiness in your life that will last year-round.
