STORY

EDITORIAL

WWelcome to the first issue of NRI ACHIEVERS. The magazine would provide professionals of Indian origin and particularly those outside of their home countries or countries of origin, with a platform to share information, concerns, opinions and aspirations. Our endeavor is to showcase role models from Indian Diaspora and to share the lessons and collective wisdom gained by those who have succeeded with those seeking success.

The Indian Diaspora today constitutes an important, and in some respects unique, force in world culture. Indian communities across the world all maintain some sort of tenuous link with the motherland. Our humble effort would help in rediscovering our roots, culture and tradition so that link gets strengthened. In our quest, we have come across various facts about NRI’s and PIO's, as some of them are informative and some are mind blowing. While some of the facts generate apathy and some of them make us think twice.

In our special cover story we have come up with 'achievers' in real sense of word. Be it Trinetra Bajpai or Kamla Persad, Kanan Bhatt or Mahendranath, all are marvels and made us proud by their splendid achievements. So all cheers for being INDIAN!!!

MANOJ BHARGAVA COMMITS 90% EARNINGS TO CHARITY Healthy NRIdeposits in Kerala

Manoj Bhargava, probably the wealthiest Indian in the US ahead of venture capitalist Vinod Khosla, doesn't believe in governments and formal education and was virtually unknown till about a month ago, ‘ when he committed that he will donate 90% of his earnings to charity’.

‘I only had training in common sense,’ the 58-year-old Manoj Bhargava, Princeton University dropout, who came into the limelight after debuting in the Forbes list of billionnaires this year.

Meet the founder of '5-Hour Energy'-a 2-ounce energy drink in a red and yellow bottle, which controls 90% of the US energy-shot market with retail sales estimated at $1 billion. This in just eight years after 5Hour's launch in 2003. Ask him about his biggest challenge and Bhargava says, ‘The biggest challenge is always the governments - they try to stop all good things. I try to stay away from them as much as I can, as I know if someone can destroy something good, it's the government!’ He sounds like a rebel, but Bhargava is closer to a monk.

In fact, he says he spent 12 years of his life shuffling between monasteries in India and learning to still his mind. He still spends an hour everyday in contemplative silence. And he is known for his frugal lifestyle and humble behaviour, dressed in a simple kurta-pajama, Bhargava lives up to this reputation. He thinks businesses in India give too much importance to education and mostly hire from top institutions. ‘It's like hiring theoretical plumbers! None of us are too impressed by MBAs,’ he says.

4 INDIAN ORIGIN DOCTORS AMONG UK'S TOP

The banks in Kerala witnessed a sharp increase in Non-Resident Indian (NRI) deposits with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reducing CRR rates due to depreciation of rupee.

In the last quarter which ended in June 2012, there was a growth of 44 per cent which was steadily increasing.

According to Federal Bank general manager Jagadeeshan, the deposits increased as the banks hiked the interest rate on a par with the domestic deposits.

Earlier, the interest rate for NRIs was around 2.5 to 3 per cent. ‘The interest rate has now increased to 8.75 per cent which is much higher when compared to banks in foreign countries. This resulted in NRIs withdrawing their money from foreign banks and depositing in Kerala,’ he said. Rupee’s depreciation is another reason for the high deposits. When NRI deposits increase, the domestic deposit automatically comes down, Jagadeeshan said.

IT'S TIME TO WOO INDIAN-AMERICANS

With both the Democratic and Republican parties out to woo the three million strong Indian-American community with its growing political clout, three of them have been given prime spots at the two parties' presidential conventions.

While California's IndianAmerican Attorney General Kamala Harris has won a prime speaking role at the Democratic National Convention in North Carolina, Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal and South Carolina governor Nikki Haley were among the ‘headliners’ at the Republican National Convention at Tampa Florida.

Apart from a speaking slot at the Democratic convention that would endorse President Barack Obama's run for a second term, Harris, daughter of an Indian mother and an African-American father, is also a co-chair of the Rules Committee.

The first woman attorney general of California, Harris was the first elected official in the state to

endorse Obama during his 2008 run for the White House and campaigned for him during his 2004 Senate run.

In July, Democrats announced that former president Bill Clinton would enter Obama's name into nomination at the convention, an important symbolic role for the popular Democrat.

Both Jindal, son of Indian immigrants from Punjab, governor of Louisiana since 2007, and Haley born Nikki Nimrata Randhawa, in a Sikh immigrant family have been named as headliners for the

Republican party's presidential convention starting in Tampa Florida.

Jindal, who spent in the Midwest stumping for the Republican nominee Mitt Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan, said in a statement, ‘I look forward to talking about the important choice facing our nation.’

‘We can either go the way of Europe, grow the public sector and make Americans more dependent on government or we can get

behind Mitt Romney, reinvigorate the private sector and get our people back to work,’ he said.

Meanwhile, five Indian-origin candidates, four Democrats and one Republican have been left in the fray for the simultaneous elections to the US Congress after the primary phase that eliminated four of them.

Giving a tough fight to their opponents are Democrats Upendra Chivukula from New Jersey, Ami Bera from California, Manan Trivedi from Pennsylvania, and Syed Taj from Michigan.

Bera, Trivedi and Taj are doctors, while Chivukula is currently deputy speaker of New Jersey assembly.

At 25, lone Republican Ranjit 'Rikky' Gill, the unmarried ‘young gun’ from California is the youngest of them all.

Though not of Indian origin Tulsi Gabbard, is set to become the first Hindu to become a member of US Congress as she won the primary contest from a safe Democratic seat from Hawaii. A

Medi tourism in India accounts for 3-5% of total healthcare delivery market and attracts patients from various parts of the world like, US, UK, Canada, South Africa, Austrailia, Newzeland, etc. India has immense potential for future growth and development in healthcare sector. Some of the major advantages that India has for medi tourism to flourish are as under:

There is a Cost difference of approximately 400-800% between healthcare services provided in India and most other developed countries. Surgeries and serious treatments are made possible at almost 1/10th the cost of developed countries. Due to strong generic drugs business and low cost of drug development, India offers low medication cost. According to a study conducted by American Medical Association (AMA), the cost of heart bypass surgery in the US is approximately US$ 1,25,000,

whereas its only US$ 10,000 in India.

If we talk of Quality, India has the advantage of having world class medical facilities which includes state of the art hospitals, trained doctors, dedicated & well qualified nurses, and well trained paramedics. Indian medical professionals also possess competent interactive English speaking skills that comes in handy when interacting with patients from other countries.

As far as Hospitals are concerned involvement of private sector and increased competition has revolutionized the Indian healthcare sector. Private players like Apollo Hospitals, Fortis Health Care, SRL Ranbaxy, etc., are expanding in India and abroad through mergers and acquisitions.

Also the P h a r m a c e u t i c a l industry in India is growing rapidly. India has a very strong generic drugs industry which has resulted in cheap and affordable medicines. Ayurveda, the traditional healthcare system of India, yoga, and spiritual

healing are fast becoming popular in the West, which attract many medical tourists to the country. India is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, renowned for its historical and cultural diversity. It is ranked in the top five favorite destinations worldwide.

Despite strong potential, there are some areas that Indian authorities needs to work on to further improve the quality of healthcare. Infrastructure is a major concern affecting India as a destination. Some drawbacks include lack of proper flight connectivity to all destinations, bad roads, safe food and water availability etc. Also, target oriented infrastructure investment would prove helpful.

Many hospitals in India still do not have international accreditation which would make them eligible for coverage with foreign insurance agencies. This would see a surge in the number of patients willing to come to India for treatment.

For the future growth of meditourism in India, the healthcare and tourism sectors need to grow in tandom. Brain drain also needs to be arrested and reversed. Better infrastructure, world class medical facilities, and medical insurance reforms would help make India the leader in medical tourism.

There is a cost difference of approximately 400-800% between healthcare services provided in India and most other countries. Complicated surgeries and treatment are made possible at almost 1/10th the cost of developed countries. Due to strong generic drugs business and low cost of drug development, India offers low medication cost. A

Whenever there is a talk about Indians who have made it big in life due to sheer grit, determination and hard work on their part, one name that flashes all of a sudden is of Trinetra Bajpai, who is a man of many sorts or rather all sorts.

The man is a multifaceted entrepreneur with multi dimensional capabilities in multiple fields of endeavor ranging from Chemical process technologies to engineering, to projects management, to literature to musical composition , to authoring coffee table books and on to motion pictures & teleserial productions. The versa-

of International Petrochemical, Steel, Wood products Industry has, over the last few years created the nucleus of an innovative business house in his home country, after a highly successful stint as a Non Resident Indian in the Middle East.

Winner of the NRI Extraordinaire, Life Time achievement, Sword of Honour, NRI of the Year (2003), N.R.I. of the Millennium, Hind Ratan, Pride of India Gold Medal, Bharat Jyoti and numerous other awards, Bajpai is presently in his ‘Rooting for the roots’ phase by making a timely foray into the Indian Corporate World targeting startlingly diverse business opportunities.

University), Trinetra is a 1972 first Class graduate in Chemical Engineering from Institute of Technology (B.H.U). National fervor runs high in the Bajpai family and Trinetra's great grand father (Pt. Ram Sevak Bajpai) was one of the Commanders-in-chief of the 1857 army of Begum Hazrat Mahal and his grandfather (Pt. Bishambhar Nath Bajpai) and grand uncle (Pt. Harish Chandra Bajpai) were Veteran freedom fighters and revered Congress leaders.

Despite losing his father at the age of 11 years Trinetra Bajpai was raised like a Prince, with loving care by his illustrious mother and received his entire education in the

He commenced his Engineering Career with Shri Ram Chemical Industries (a DCM group enterprise) with an initial two years stint and then went on to serve Rashtriya Chemical and Fertilizers for 16 years with great distinction. One of Bajpai's major career accomplishments is setting up the prestigious Thal Fertilizer Complex of RCF (a Rs. 880 Crores Project) the first gas based (HB) pipeline) Ammonia and Urea plants which was built within costs and ahead of schedule.

With 18 years of achievement studded experience behind him Bajpai then proceeded to found the MANSO group in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1990. It turned

out to be a fascinating and highly successful stint for Bajpai. In the true style of a super Technocrat, he went on to effectively transplant Indian hi-tech in the vibrant industrial scene of Saudi Arabia in terms of men, materials and methods, blazing a new trail for Indian entrepreneurship in the Middle East.

MANSO Group (starting from scratch), has blossomed into a highly diversified (Petrochemicals, Steel, Wood products, Engineering and industrial Services) enterprises with an annual turn-over of over a billion Saudi Riyals. Trinetra Bajpai's promotion of Indian technologies, human resources skills, engineering expertise and manufacturing capabilities in Saudi Arabia and Middle East is a part of folklore among the Indian Community particularly in the Al-Jubail Industrial City. Building of 18 world class Plants in Petrochemicals, Steel and other sectors in as many years is a fabulous achievement by any standards worthy of emulation. Aspiring Middle East NRIs would do well to take a leaf out of Bajpai's book.

As is well known Trinetra Bajpai is a Chemical Engineer Technocrat with over 40 years of international experience in top executive positions in manufacturing industry with specialization in design, engineering, execution and management of

large-scale Petrochemical and other industrial sector projects; notably Methanol, Ammonia, Urea, Formaldehyde, Derivatives & Construction Chemicals Plants, Hot & Cold Steel Rolling Mills, Panel Boards, Laminates, Flooring Materials, MDF, HDF manufacturing Facilities etc. He has developed, perfected and successfully commercialized numerous chemical projects and technologies having built 27 plants in course of a three decades plus distinguished career.

Kanika and Anshula have been behind the conception and successful operation of the Company founded by Trinetra Bajpai.

Bajpai has an observation that although among entrepreneurs living abroad there is scant confidence about the system prevailing in India, he has found it to be surprisingly easy to get a local foothold. There may be a general feeling that nothing moves here, but expatriates having second thoughts about settling in India are in for a real surprise.

On the fine arts' front Bajpai is a connoisseur of vintage Hindi film and Indian classical music, apart from being a writer. His publications (in addition to numerous technical papers in prestigious journals) include books on movie legends Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand and Indian Classical music. The father-daughter duo of Trinetra and Anshula Bajpai have joined hands to recreate priceless nostalgia by penning a historically invaluable book titled ‘Those Magnificent Music Makers’ showcasing the life, times and musical exploits of the greatest Music Directors of Hindi films in the period 1936 to 1975. With her gorgeous looks, Kanan could have opted for a glamorous career as a model or an actress but she wanted to pur-

sue a more cerebral profession that would add value to the industry and the society. Instead of Hollywood or Bollywood, she headed for the Corporate World. According to Kanan, ‘The corporate world is the most fascinating of all places - the largest structured congregation in society where people from different backgrounds, upbringing, nationalities, cultures, races, religions, genders, habits & temperaments come together to seemingly fulfill a common corporate mission; each

with his or her own individual agenda, at times harmonious and at other times disjoint. While we try to term the time we spend here as the professional work life and many of us try to keep it separate from our personal lives, little do we realize that this is just a myth to fool our own minds. It is humanly impossible to compartmentalize the two. Majority of us carry forward our personal idiosyncrasies into our professional worlds and our professional baggage into our personal space, making each more challenging than the other, sometimes exhilarating and exasperating at other times. CorporateDramas.com is a realty and fiction series that gives a voice to this plethora of emotions.’

After Bachelors in Engineering and an MBA from premier institutes, Kanan went on to manage complex technology businesses across the globe. For someone so young and spirited, she displays a much versatile and wiser disposition on life, achievement and values.

Kanan attributes her strength and confidence to a higher power that she says has always lighted her path. Her faith in the good old values of Karma combined with qualities of integrity and intelligence provide her with clarity in thought and action that is sometimes hard to find even in veterans. However, she does not take full credit for her success and is quick to add how fortunate she has been to have wonderful parents who have motivated her and given her the freedom to pursue her dreams in her own terms.

With Gita in her hand, Kamla Persad Bissessar took the oath of office as the first woman Prime Minister of the Caribbean nation, Trinidad & Tobago. Many may wonder what's the link between the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the country? It was between 1845 and 1917 that many from the country had sailed to the Republic. And one such family was that of Kamla Persad Bissessar, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago.

Kamla was not born with a silver spoon in her mouth. She has risen to this high post by dint of merit and hard work. Born on 22 April 1955 in Siparia, she went to neighbourhood school. Her higher education was imparted in the University of West Indies. She went to the Norwood Technical College in the UK and later attended the Law School. She obtained the degree of Executive master’s in Business Administration and later became Attorney-at-Law. This legal acumen held her in good stead in becoming the Attorney General of Trinidad & Tobago later in her life.

‘This place India has passed on a rich heritage to us. It is from here that our forefathers left for Trinidad and Tobago. I don't know much about the history but I am very excited to visit my roots,’ said Kamla Persad-Bissessar. ‘My grand mother knew better. Since I have never been to India before, I am not acquainted with the geography of this country,’ she said.

When Kamla visited India, on

the occassion of ‘NRI’s Day’ this year, which held in Jaipur (Rajasthan), She spoke extensively on business and trade opportunities between the two countries.

She also advocated women's reservation in the legislature.

‘Whenever you have more women, corruption is less,’ she said.

AThough India and Trinidad and Tobago have strong historical connections, the economic association between the two countries was not significant, PersadBissessar felt. ‘You should look at Trinidad and Tobago as a bridge to the Americas and the Caribbeans,’ she said.

In 1964, Mahendra Nath landed in the US, with US$ 800 in his pocket and took admission in University of Minnesota to do an MS in Industrial Engineering. And as they say, he never looked back. Over the decades, Nath built a family owned business, Nath Companies (based in Minnesota), which today operates many restaurants, multi-apartment buildings, residential rental properties and hotels. In addition, he provides management services to commercial buildings. He created almost 5,000 jobs in the process. The organization he built is based on the strong foundation of ethics, value creation, transparency and customer centricity. Something which can be traced back to his roots. ‘I think the business ethics, integrity, the values, respect for other human beings, talent, skill and more importantly, the ability to share, these are things which have held us in good stead and people respect us for that,’ says Mahendra Nath, CEO, Nath Companies. Being an entrepreneur himself, he encourages his employees to be innovative and ambitious.

Not just that, Nath firmly believes in giving back to the community and his home country thats India, always remain close to his heart. He helped develop the integrated medicine curriculum at the Northwestern Health Sciences University, education for the under-privileged and setting up health clinics in US and other parts of the world. He is among the founding members of Healing

Having spent more than four decades in US, he has seen the shift in perception about India. From a time when very few did know about the country to a point when it makes headlines in American newspapers. ‘Since

nineties, the whole thing has changed. Indians are respected more and those living in US have contributed in a big way to this changed perception. Being intelligent and hardworking, Indians in US are doing well financially and they haven't forgotten their culture also,’ says Nath.

He sees both India and United States as natural partners and India as the right destination for American companies to invest. ‘While the country must work on increasing transparency, there is no doubt that there are a lot of positives. A thriving democracy, a large English speaking population, focus on education, improving infrastructure, young population and a big market, are some of the things which make India a good investment destination’, He concludes.

Whenever we talk about NRI, their success sagas, their struggle in between and their date with the destiny, it always becomes a never ending story of greet and passion.

mentally wrong with these matrimonial advertisements all over the Internet and on-line newspapers. Many of these ads are nothing more than fishing for NRIs living overseas. As you can see for yourself, the primary qualities for match-making are often overlooked. What happened to the need for decent human qualities, honesty or other values? These advertisements don't seem like for a wedding but more like a business proposition: would you take our pretty/handsome daughter/son for a green card? The greed is written all over these NRI matrimonials.

Similarly, on the other hand, you can also find plenty of ads starting with ‘ Looking for a suitable match for a well settled NRI overseas…..’ or something like that. Being an ‘NRI abroad’ is the main quality being touted again and again. As long as people are willing to be exploited, there will be exploiters.

More and more problems are emerging with these NRI marriages. The problem is not just opportunistic NRIs, but also those who put their trust in someone whom they have barely met. The personal gains take priority over any consideration for the long term well-being of the bride/groom. We can blame the NRIs for failed wedding, but the fault lies with both sides. Actually, the blame lies more on those who get married to someone just because he or she is an NRI.

If you are lucky, you may find a decent match, Yes, there are lots of success stories. However, it is

The bride/groom families are blaming each other….

These are just a few typical examples. The proof of deteriorating NRI relations is right in front of us. Let us hope and wish that the Indian community wakes up and pays attention to this issue of increasingly failing NRI marriages. It is very important that every future NRI bride/groom and their families do the due diligence before committing to NRI weddings.

Why not India

Sometimes, I feel I belong to another planet. I have this strange fascination for the whole universe. I've always wanted to explore more and more. I grew up wanting to learn the flute or sitar. The Indian performing arts have so much depth. You actually enjoy what you're doing. Other forms, too, are beautiful, but you don't grow with them.

Classical ballet is beautiful. But ballet in the West is purely aesthetics. There is not a tinge of emotion. With Indian dance, I can get to the ethos of it, go deep into it. Even though I was born in the USA, I feel I have connections all over the world. So it never seemed strange to me that I ended up making my career and home in India. When I came here, I felt as if I already knew the place. Then I felt ‘why not India’. Afterwards it was alltogether a different journey. In the university, I had studied humanities and fine arts in the Asian Studies course. I had also done a lot of theatre, dance and even puppetry. I'm very

fortunate to have cosmopolitan parents. They were interested in the arts and humane issues and would take me to cultural performances all over the town. You can really get to know a country well through its arts. I guess that's why I took to dance. Every performance is like a puja. It's so fulfilling. When you go into a spiritual form like dance, there is very high energy there. It's a great blessing to be able to do the work I'm doing.

I came to India to continue learning Manipuri dance, which I had begun in 1969. I really liked the lyricism of this intricate dance style. And I didn't want to come merely as a tourist. When I got an opportunity to attend a workshop on Manipuri, I immediately grabed it.

I always wondered what I could do with the arts in the USA. I was teaching and performing in California, even running 200 programs in schools but there was always this desire for more. So, in 1973 I came back to India to study and that return was a turning point. Initially, it wasn't my intention to stay here. But as I went deeper and deeper, time just kept on extending.

I started to learn Odissi, after taking permission from my Manipuri teacher. The guru's blessings are very important. At that time, Kelucharan Maharaj was holding a workshop, where I took my first lesson.

Then I trained

under Shree Charan Mahabhadra. I followed him wherever he went, Kolkata, Mumbai or America. So I learnt it in bits and pieces initially and then practiced regularly. It takes many years to realize your real aptitude in a classical form and even more to perfect it. My teachers also urged me to do more Odissi. And since then, there has been no looking back.

But I think real appreciation for me came when the maestros, Bhupen Hazarika and Jatin Ghosh, declared that I was one of the few foreigners who could dance with the grace of an Indian. I still perform Manipuri, but not as much as Odissi.

Most people say that I have a past life connection with Asia, but I've never bothered to find out. I find it sheer self-indulgence. Why bother looking at past lives? Live in the present. But I feel that

past life regression has value as it helps to sort out certain unresolved issues, which you probably need to desperately do. Basically, we are here to learn. You have to be present in the moment and evolve.

My background is Jewish, but that doesn't make any difference to me as a person, or dogmatic about religion. I enjoy all religions as long as they aren't used against people. I can't imagine my life any other way than it is right now. I'm lucky to be in a profession where I can reach out to so many people. I can touch so many lives, even help them in my own way. I'm glad to be able to devote my hours, minutes and days to an art form, which is about love, truth and beauty. I'm a lover of the sublime. The fact that it is metaphysical, genuine, appeals to me. ‘Nudity No Taboo’

The dark shadows of nudity and obscenity, by-products of misrepresentation of the accidental culture and social decadence - loom larger day by day on Indian cinema.

The rising levels of obscenity and nudity in Indian films not only pose a threat to the foundations of Indian society but also raise questions about the cultural and sexual norms that have to be followed in adherence to our variegated, rich and ageless culture. The Indian film industry is the biggest in the world, producing around 1200 films annually in Hindi and in other major regional languages, with an annual turnover of Rs. 5000 crores. unwanted, unwarranted and excessive depiction of sex and obscenity in the films has raised concerns over the effect of such depictions on society in general and on youth in particular. Movies today are so vulgar and obscene, that viewing them with the family is often not possible without discomfort or embarrassment. Film Censor Board has become lenient and the films with seemingly controversial rushes like ‘Jism 2’, ‘Raaz 2’, ‘Kurbaan’, ‘Matrubhoomi’, etc. have been screened with minimal editing. It is a great pity and shame that heedless of our rich heritage, the menace of sexual abuse and exposure of bodylines, limbs and contours to the extent of complete or partial nudity has assumed monstrous proportions.

John Keats said, ‘Love is my religion - I could die for it’. The poet of odes makes love his religion. From the beginning of civilization there is only one thing unchanged, the feeling of love. Someone express it through art, some through word. For some people love is life. But love is an atom bomb which cannot be diffused. In fact love is more powerful than an atom bomb. Atom bomb can throw its positivenegative impact in limited area whereas love has the power to impact throughout the universe without boundaries. In short love is power.

Love does not mean only lover's love. Love to our parent, our pat, our country are also different forms of love. Love to our birth place, state, country and

POWER OF LOVE

entire world is the example which reflects that one can love even non living objects.

Love is an unseen power. Love can felt even without any action or act. Love within family members, relatives, society, human beings or love to any living creatures or nature tied us in knot is truly

called love.

Likewise our respected NRI's love their country and country loves them. In other words love has no boundaries. Boundaries or distances can’t be any obstacle between love. NRI's are our country’s imperative soul. They are the people who represent us in different countries. They are the people who play a role of international integration. Generally people have gone in the developed countries and got opportunities to live life in a better way and import developed culture and ideas back in our country.

An unseen unconditional knot between NRI and country or its citizen indicates the existence of true love. Love is a vast chapter, which cannot be completed, expressed or explained in few words. In the words of Lord Byron, ‘Yes, love indeed is light from heaven; A spark of that immortal fire with angels shared, by Allah given to lift from earth our low desire….
