Give My Regards to Broadway

The Kristin Chenoweth photoshoot was one of the most surreal days of my career. It was exactly a year ago that we were creating the 2025 editorial calendar. Print magazines have to work wildly far in advance. Our August issue, Faces of the 405, is our biggest of the year. For this one, I pitched a new tradition: putting a legacy face on the cover of the issue — an icon who has done so much in and on behalf of our Oklahoma City community.

As you can probably guess, the bigger the superstar, the more people involved. The process of getting this shoot and article to actualize involved hundreds, if not thousands, of emails, phone calls and texts. The moodboards, meetings, designer gowns and glam teams arriving in town all came to fruition one morning in one of the city’s most gorgeous locations, the Omni’s Scissortail Suite. Charcuterie boards were prepared, bellinis chilled and gowns steamed. The day was long and fun … and we are so thrilled with the results.

I can confirm that Kristin Chenoweth is the real deal — a dynamic, bubbly, hilarious force in a tiny yet mighty package. Her charm and wit lived up to her wonderful reputation. Photographer Charlie Neuenschwander and senior writer Evie Klopp Holzer captured her essence so beautifully. When Kristin sang the national anthem at Game 7 of the NBA Finals, I could feel, like everyone else in that stadium, that she is a deeply invested and celebrated part of this city. We are honored to tell her story (pg. 28)!

Also in this issue you will also find the much anticipated “Faces of the 405,” showcasing the impressive people behind some of the top industries in Oklahoma City. So many of the people featured are near to our heart and I admire them greatly (pg. 45)!

Additionally, local author David Skidmore returns with an article about what the OKC Thunder’s championship win and parade means to this city. It is not unusual for me to tear up reading one of our articles. But it is not typical for it to happen this many times over the same one. I think we are all still riding that high, so relive it yet again on page 36.

We are thrilled to bring you a classic Southern home design spread that is one of the most elegant homes we have ever published (pg. 22), as well as a summer dining roundup that includes OKANA’s expansively varied food scene (pg. 40) and The Vault’s swanky cocktail offerings (pg. 42).

I hope you have had a wonderful summer!

Add star power to your ensemble

Before making her way to Oz and gracing the halls of Shiz, Kristin Chenoweth was garnering her star power in the state we collectively call home. After graduating from Oklahoma City University, the 4’11” actress soared to great heights on Broadway as the effervescent, spritely and glamorous Glinda—and her personal style is just as show-stopping. Chenoweth combines timeless femininity with playful details, creating petite yet equally striking ensembles, and you can do the same. Don’t be afraid to stand out (and a few inches taller) with a statement heel that commands attention, while a shimmering garment catches and keeps the eye. It may not be a cape, but a great coat can add a dramatic flair—and what is a Glinda-fied look without a touch of pink? Be you a good witch or a bad witch, you will most definitely be the best dressed!

The Sunny Season

Staying safe from heat exhaustion

August in Oklahoma is hot. Between the warm summer heat and high humidity, Oklahoma’s heat index in August is well over 100 degrees almost every day. But as kids gear up to go back to school, August is also when many Oklahomans enjoy fresh air and lots of time outside. We spoke with emergency medicine physician Giselle Zagari, M.D., on how to safely enjoy these last summer days in the sun.

With 20 years of experience in emergency departments in both Arizona and Oklahoma City, Zagari has seen her share of heat-related illness. “We do not actually see heat stroke as often,” she said. “Usually patients come in when they are in the heat exhaustion phase.”

Basically, heat exhaustion occurs when our bodies overheat and we lose too much water and salt from excessive sweating. “Heat exhaustion is the level below heat stroke,” Zagari said. “It is when you are thirsty, sweating and your heart rate is up. You may feel lightheaded or faint, nauseous or begin vomiting. These patients are conscious and aware that they are hot and feeling dehydrated.” In Oklahoma, heat exhaustion can occur at a lower temperature because of the high humidity.

If you begin to feel any symptoms of heat exhaustion, the first thing to do would be to get out of the heat and seek shelter. “Try to get water in your body and cool the body off by external means. Place wet towels on the pulse points like the armpits, groin and the back of the neck and sit in front of a fan,” Zagari advised. Should you begin to feel confused or lose consciousness, seek emergency treatment as soon as possible.

If the body’s temperature rises above 104 degrees, you may experience heat stroke, which is much more serious. It includes an altered mental status and the inability for the body to regulate temperature, so you are no longer

sweating. Heat stroke may damage the brain, heart, kidneys and muscles. Zagari noted she does not see heat stroke as often, because usually individuals are seeking help by the time they are experiencing heat exhaustion. “Heat stroke tends to occur with people who are intoxicated or under the influence of substances, or do not have the ability to seek help, like in the unhoused population,” she said.

If you have plans to be outdoors in the heat, there are ways to prevent heat-related illness. Avoid excessive alcohol, as it is a diuretic and also

a vasodilator, so you will lose more heat while drinking. Zagari also recommended wearing proper footwear, especially if you are going to be standing on concrete. Plan any physical activity, like yardwork or outdoor exercise, in the morning or evening when it is cooler, and wear lightweight, loose clothing. The most important thing is staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water and electrolytes consistently throughout the day.

PROTECT YOUR PETS

Make sure your pets are safe in the heat, too! Keep your animals indoors when possible and provide access to fresh, cool water and shade when they are outside. Walks should be in the morning or evening when it is cooler out, and avoid letting them stroll on the concrete for long periods of time. Provide cooling mats and elevated beds, and reward that very good pup with a frozen treat.

“SHE GOT ME BACK ON THE GOLF COURSE!”

“I hurt my back playing golf. I went to the chiropractor. I went to the pain institute. I went to the spine institute. Nothing helped. The pain was debilitating, I went six or seven months without playing.”

Chronic pain makes everyday life incredibly difficult. It prevents you from participating in activities you once loved and simple daily tasks like grocery shopping become nearly impossible.

This was the case for Robert O. of Edmond, OK.

Robert went on to explain that on a scale of one to ten his pain was well over a nine every single day. Like Robert, regardless of your age, back pain (whether caused by a sports injury, longstanding arthritis or even specific conditions like scoliosis) can severely impact the quality of your life. In short, it stops you from doing the things you love with the people you

love and that’s not a great way to live. On top of that, general practitioners, specialists, and surgeons are all too eager to prescribe medications with side effects detrimental to your recovery or invasive surgeries that have less than desirable outcomes.

Fortunately for the people of the OKC Metro, Dr. Toni Twitty and her team at Be Well Acupuncture have pioneered non-pharmaceutical, nonsurgical innovative medical solutions that actually treat your pain!

“My patients are often people who normally require surgery, but have simply decided that they would rather explore other options. There is more healthcare than prescription pills, elimination diets, and scalpels,” shares Dr. Twitty. “By offering several integrative therapies, we are able to combat your pain from several angles ensuring the best possible outcome.”

This approach makes Be Well an authority in treating seemingly hopeless cases of chronic pain.

Robert easily attested to this claim, “I highly recommend her to anybody. I thank the Lord today that I met Dr. Twitty and she was able to help me because I can play golf now!”

Each new patient that comes to Be Well receives a comprehensive consultation and then is prescribed a very personalized treatment program that is tailored to their specific needs and goals. “While every treatment I perform is based on a framework cultivated from decades of education and experience, no two cases are the same and so every person under my care is treated that way,” tells Dr. Twitty.

Southern Beauty

Classic, traditional designs elevate the Hilgenfelds’ Norman home

Though it sits in Norman’s Ashton Grove neighborhood, Laura and Brian Hilgenfeld’s new home could easily be moved from its current location to a centuriesold city in the Deep South—and blend right in.

The home’s traditional Georgian architecture and interiors would fit another city entirely, and that’s intentional. Laura Hilgenfeld loves Southern styles that echo her South Carolina roots. She enlisted local interior designer Nina Wadley and architect Charles Hilton out of Connecticut to create this home.

Hilton visited Oklahoma for the first time when he began this project, spending two days surveying the land and gaining insight into

the family’s lifestyle and goals. He expertly guided all exterior details, including the large columns flanking the front door and the home’s symmetrical layout. Jim Bowers Construction led the build.

Upon entry, the home’s foyer welcomes guests with a sweeping staircase, intricate trim and moulding and a checkerboard marble floor. However, the entry’s most notable feature is the mural painted by local artist Jarron Johnston.

“We knew we wanted to have some kind of a mural scene there and had originally intended to do that in wallpaper, but we just didn't know if we could get it sized in a way that we were going to feel comfortable with, that was going

to look appropriate,” Wadley said. “Laura has a friend who is a painter, and he was willing to give it a shot … He did a great job.”

Johnston’s marshland scene—the largest work he has yet created—stretches gracefully up the stairs; three additional paintings, customized to match the mural, adorn the surrounding walls. To Hilgenfeld, the mural recalls her grandparents’ home in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, her years living in Charleston and her visits to Mount Pleasant. “It just looks like home to me,” Hilgenfeld said.

Wadley and Hilgenfeld worked well together on design decisions. Wadley lives in the neighborhood and worked with the Hilgenfelds

in their previous home, also located in Ashton Grove.

“I speak ‘Laura’ very well; I kind of know what she wants,” said Wadley, noting the Schumacher wallpaper in the formal dining room received immediate approval. “She’s also extremely decisive and knowledgeable about what she wants, which makes it easy for us to get there.”

The Hilgenfeld family stays busy with five boys, three still living at home. Performance fabrics and details like the washable custom covers on the kitchen chairs make rooms userfriendly.

“With all these boys, I want things to be beautiful, but they can’t be overly precious,” Hilgenfeld said.

A game room upstairs and family room downstairs provide fun gathering spaces, and the family loves to pile into the breakfast room banquette, which has an inviting curved design.

The kitchen showcases an abundant use of blue marble, fabricated from Young Brothers.

Its soft colors contrast perfectly with the dark mahogany island.

“We didn’t want the home to feel like new construction, so we used materials to make it feel more historic,” said Wadley. Materials such as that mahogany, which appears throughout the home.

A favorite room is the butler’s pantry—“like a little jewel box,” said Wadley. The pantry has hallway access, but it also connects to the formal dining room through a jib door. The atmospheric space is drenched in a deep emerald green, painted in a high gloss for extra drama. The adjoining dining room can seat 16, ideal for family Christmas gatherings.

All designs fit certain criteria: beautiful, functional and expressively Southern. “I feel like everything feels like us, but it feels special,” said Hilgenfeld. The home accommodates everyday living, but in the most elevated way.

THE DESIGN OF THE GAME ROOM STORAGE WAS INSPIRED BY OLD-SCHOOL WINE LOCKERS WITH BRASS GRILLES.

Discovering the Unexpected in OKLAHOMA CITY’S WHEELER DISTRICT

WHAT MAKES THE WHEELER DISTRICT STAND OUT?

MP: Is there anything not remarkable about the Wheeler District? And I mean that in the best possible way.

At its core is New Urbanism, a movement focused on walkable, mixed-use communities designed with people in mind. Wheeler embodies that beautifully. It’s about connection: to your neighborhood, your city, and your lifestyle. The layout encourages less driving and more living, with homes, shops, parks, offices, and bike trails all within reach.

Picture this: The Big Friendly Brewery and Taco Nation are at the district’s heart, with outdoor seating that overlooks a playground. It’s the kind of place where you can enjoy a craft beer and street tacos while your kids run around in the sunshine. It feels thoughtful, intentional, and totally alive.

WHAT SURPRISES YOU MOST ABOUT THE DISTRICT?

MP: The vision behind it. Ten years ago, this was just an abandoned airpark. Today, it’s a vibrant community with a nationally recognized brewery, Nobuinspired sushi, and neighborhoods that feel more like a modern coastal town than the middle of Oklahoma.

It has a real sense of place, with colorful, patterned homes, a Ferris wheel by the river, and the kind of energy that makes you think, “This city’s going somewhere.” Honestly, if you told me the Olympics would be held here one day, I wouldn’t be surprised.

WHAT MAKES THE WHEELER DISTRICT STAND OUT?

MP: I’d start the day waking up in one of Wheeler’s iconic Airbnb cottages, perfect for a local staycation. From there, I’d head to Clarity Coffee for a slowdrip and a peaceful morning. If it’s a market day, I’d stroll through the farmer’s market to pick up something fresh and local.

Lunch would be at Taco Nation, and I’d pair it with a cold beer from The Big Friendly. Ideally, I’d grab a picnic table near the playground to enjoy the sunshine and a bit of people-watching while I eat.

Dinner would be the toughest decision of the day. Sushi from Akai or a wood-fired Neapolitan pizza from American Gothic. Honestly, you can’t go wrong either way.

Kristin Chenoweth is equal parts “Queen of Versailles” and hometown hero

Photography by Charlie Neuenschwander

Glam Team: Mat Wulff & Garrett Lemmons

Location: Omni Oklahoma City Hotel Scissortail Suite

Broadway superstar Kristin Chenoweth is recognizable worldwide for her small-but-mighty persona, versatile vocals and captivating performances on screen and stage, with Emmy and Tony wins to her name. She’s also widely recognized as an Oklahoman (especially by fellow Oklahomans), as she is quick to share stories about her upbringing during celebrity interviews.

“I left to pursue my dream, but I'm still an Okie, and I'm proud of it,” said Chenoweth in a Zoom interview for 405 Magazine

Chenoweth – who is currently prepping for the Broadway debut of The Queen of Versailles – joined our video call wearing a pink robe and warm smile. Given the setup, the superstar encounter instantly felt comfortable. Conversation flowed easily.

Chenoweth noted several ways she fosters a connection with her home state: She visits family and friends in Oklahoma regularly. She’s an avid Sooner and Thunder fan. (Her dog is named Thunder.) And every summer, you’ll find her in Broken Arrow leading her very own Broadway Bootcamp.

“What is the saying? It's ‘You can take the girl out of Oklahoma, but you can't take the Oklahoma out of the girl.’ And that is never more applicable than with me,” she said. “I think it's important as an artist and as a person to never forget my roots, because those are the ones that grounded me.”

Born and raised in Broken Arrow, Chenoweth attended Oklahoma City University, where she earned a master’s degree in opera performance. Chenoweth formed a charity partnership

with the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center Foundation, and in 2012 the center named the Kristin Chenoweth Theatre in her honor. She has been inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame and Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame for her generosity, talents and achievements.

With an obvious appreciation of the arts, Chenoweth said she’s continually amazed by Oklahoma’s cultural scene—the museums, the music, the performing arts and, especially, the people.

“Look at how much talent has come [out of Oklahoma]. We have a poet laureate. We have country music singers. We have amazing Cherokee Indians who write beautiful music out of their native tongue. We've got Broadway stars. We've got pop singers,” said Chenoweth. “When I first hit New York and people said, ‘Oh, she's from Oklahoma.’ I said, ‘Yeah, you guys don't know what we have. If you thought about it, you’d know.’ Reba [McEntire] and I talk about it all the time. There is something in our water, and it’s pretty cool.”

Bridge to Broadway

In 2015, the star launched Kristin Chenoweth’s Broadway Bootcamp to give Broadway hopefuls the opportunity to take classes, hold performances and learn from top mentors in the entertainment industry—including Chenoweth herself.

“The first thing I always tell them is, ‘If you can see yourself doing anything else and being happy, by all means, go do that thing. This life is hard. It takes a lot of sacrifice, a lot of work and training. But if you can't see yourself doing anything else and being happy, then go for it,’” Chenoweth said.

“I think it's important as an artist and as a person to never forget my roots, because those are the ones that grounded me.”
KRISTIN IN SELF-PORTRAIT
KRISTIN IN PAMELLA ROLAND

Broadway Bootcamp offers an intense two-week training annually in late July. Many attendees are Jimmy Award winners, already recognized by the highest National High School Musical Theatre Awards. Broadway Bootcamp has also attracted an international following with students applying from the UK, Australia, Brazil, the Philippines, Germany and Ireland.

“Every summer I scream to Oklahoma, ‘We're here!’ But you know what? That's not why I do it. I do it for these kids. I bring in the best of the best from Broadway, they teach, and we put on a big performance at the end—and that'll be my legacy at the Kristin Chenoweth Theatre in Broken Arrow,” she said.

Sometimes students find success after bootcamp, sometimes with Chenoweth building that bridge from Broken Arrow to Broadway. It’s no coincidence that former student Tatum Hopkins will be making her Broadway debut in The Queen of Versailles, Chenoweth’s latest musical production. Chenoweth stars in the show, and she knew Hopkins was perfect for the role of her niece. However, she needed the show’s composer Stephen Schwartz to agree. So, Chenoweth created an opportunity for that, inviting Hopkins to perform with her at a concert she knew Schwartz would be attending.

“She was auditioning, but she didn't know it,” Chenoweth explained. “Right after the show, just as I had suspected, Stephen Schwartz came back and he said, ‘Now Kristin, you were wonderful —but who's the kid?’ ‘Well, that's my girl.’ And he goes, ‘She's perfect for Jonquil.’ I said, ‘I know that.’ He goes, ‘You did this on

purpose.’ ‘I did,’ I said… She still had to come in on an audition, and she won the role fair and square.”

Like other Broadway Bootcampers, Hopkins remains involved with Chenoweth’s programs, now participating as an intern alongside other graduates. The Broadway Bootcamp community is a strong one.

“What we have built—and I can't say ‘I,’ I'm saying ‘We, my team,’—it is so special,” Chenoweth said. “I know I have done a lot of cool things in my career, and that's what everyone wants to talk about, but this is the coolest thing that I have done.”

In the Queen’s Company

Chenoweth’s newest project is a musical based on the awardwinning 2012 documentary The Queen of Versailles and the life of Jackie Siegel, a billionairess who has spent more than a decade constructing a $100 million house in Orlando. The documentary follows David and Jackie Siegel and their eight children as they navigate life and build “the largest home in America” when, while filming, the Great Recession of 2008 hits. Suddenly, one family’s life of excess is turned upside down.

“I saw the documentary when it came out and, probably like a lot of people, I was aghast. I also thought Jackie was really charming in some weird, wacky way,” said Chenoweth, adding that the show picks up the story where the documentary leaves off.

MENTORING STUDENTS AT KRISTIN CHENOWETH’S BROADWAY BOOT CAMP IN OKLAHOMA SINGING

Chenoweth is starring in The Queen of Versailles as Jackie Siegel, and her company Diva Worldwide Entertainment is producing it. The show has been a musical reunion for Chenoweth and Schwartz, who also collaborated on Wicked. Chenoweth also enlisted Tanninger Entertainment, a team of producers out of Oklahoma, for the show.

Chenoweth said there were many aspects of Jackie Siegel’s story that intrigued her and made her want to put it on stage.

“What was interesting to me is we live in a society where we sit behind a computer and we do our Instagram scrolling or our Facebook... We ‘like’ things, we make comments, and a lot of people can hide behind their name and be vicious,” Chenoweth said. “And who is she? She's a billionaire. Why do I feel sorry for her? She's white, she's entitled… It's very easy to judge someone behind a computer, watching through a lens of a camera. But it begs the question: How would I behave if I had $1 billion, $5 billion, $10 billion? It's a cautionary tale for all of us.”

Through the creation of this musical, Chenoweth and Siegel have become friends. It turns out the two have several similarities: Both are well educated. Both have embraced life in the spotlight. Both enjoy champagne and caviar—as well as a good drive-thru. (Chenoweth remembers stopping by In-N-Out Burger after her Emmy win.) Both love their family deeply. And both value kindness and generosity.

“Two years ago, I went to see ‘Versailles.’ Jackie invited me to see what was actually finished,” said Chenoweth. “She showed up, and she looked beautiful, and I liked her dress that she had on. I asked, ‘Is that Balmain?’ because I'm a shopper myself. I don't have a lot of things, but I like my clothes. And she goes, ‘It is.’ I go, ‘Oh, it's so pretty on you.’ That night, in my size, the same dress was delivered to me at my hotel room. Now she's fortunate enough to

be able to pay for that and send it to me, but the card read, ‘I just wanted you to be happy’… So you kind of can't get too mad at that.”

Star Power

Chenoweth has flourished as an entertainer and an Oklahoma ambassador, and she often uses her star power to lift others up.

“I'm so happy how far Oklahoma has come with diversity and inclusion, especially when our history has shown otherwise. I am so proud when I come back home and I see that happening,” she said.

Chenoweth wants all individuals to feel love and support. In a completely relatable fashion, she shared how she needs to seek help sometimes, too.

“I get asked all the time, ‘Are you really that happy? You seem to be so happy all the time.’ I am a happy person, generally, but I'm becoming more and more [aware that] as you grow and evolve, you deal with anxiety,” said Chenoweth. “I think that with my kids and with the work I do, I'm starting to realize that it's okay to deal with that. And I want to put that message out there for men and women of Gen X, that it's okay to take five minutes to yourself… It's a very interesting time to be alive. So it's okay to battle depression and anxiety—and still be a happy person. All of those three things can be true.”

These sentiments prompted a final question: How does she find peace?

Chenoweth said she prays. She reads the Bible. She goes to therapy. She practices yoga and connects with close friends. And she comes home – forever grounded by her roots.

“I'm so happy how far Oklahoma has come with diversity and inclusion, especially when our history has shown otherwise. I am so proud when I come back home and I see that happening,”

CITY OF CHAMPIONS

More than a win; more than a parade Written by David Skidmore

CHAMPIONSHIP CITY

“The Sooner State has always been the land of hope for the second, or third, or sometimes last chance people from other places.” – John Dwyer, The Oklahomans Outsiders call Oklahoma a flyover state. The only things flying over OKC on June 24 were helicopters capturing roughly 600,000 of us celebrating our first NBA championship.

In Oklahoma, we gather. During welcome week at my university, they took us to the Oklahoma City National Memorial, where we gathered by the Survivor Tree to remember. To live in Oklahoma City is to be shaped by a story of resilience and love. Locals refer to it as the Oklahoma Standard: Oklahomans show up for each other. It’s who we are, and it’s what we do. And now, a championship. A parade. For this city.

If you’ve been around for more than a few months, you know the road to this moment was not an easy one: The ahead-of-schedule 2012 NBA Finals team. The soclose-we-could-taste-it 2016 Western Conference Finals team. The aftermath of all of this, and then there was the great reset. The choice in 2019 to rebuild. Six years later, Oklahoma City is still ahead of schedule. This time, we finished the job. How do you celebrate? The way only championship cities can—with a full-scale parade.

THE JOY OF WINNING

I remember thinking as a kid, “I’d love to be in a city where we win an NBA championship.” That dream felt too far away to touch.

It has always seemed like championship moments and the parades that follow are something people in places like L.A., Boston, Chicago and even Dallas get to have. They’re the big cities. OKC is the small market, and the small markets rarely ascend to win it all. “Being at the parade, I feel like I watched OKC grow up,” Bryan Clifton said. “We deserve a seat at the table. This team earned it for all of us.”

On that day, people stood in the sun, enduring 90° heat for hours, to celebrate. Oklahoma summer can be smothering heat—but the focal point wasn’t the humidity. It was winning.

You hear it all the time—the world has become increasingly polarized. People take sides and shout opinions at each other. Keyboard warriors sound off on their particular self-determined, salient point. As global conflicts increase and many people feel their anxieties increase as well, the parade gave us a moment to simply be together. One estimate guessed over 600,000 people showed up for the parade. Thousands gathered in Scissortail Park, shouting with one voice.

“OKC! OKC! OKC! OKC!”

What if the most responsible thing we could do in that moment was to celebrate? What if the power is found in remembering there is a unity more powerful than our multitudes of disagreements that drive wedges between us?

As I celebrated with friends, we realized this feeling of happiness hadn’t left in days. Usually, something or someone comes along and rains on your parade. This time, regardless of outside circumstances, our city had something to share in and celebrate. That’s the joy of winning.

Dreaming of being a champion is one thing. Waking up as one is another. When the buzzer sounded in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals, Thunder fans everywhere felt it. There’s no feeling in the world like winning. Once you’ve had a taste of winning, that’s all your palate wants to experience.

This isn’t just about basketball; it is bigger than basketball. This is about shared joy, and what we have in common in Oklahoma City.

TOGETHER

Long before basketball brought us together, shared grief did. Every April, thousands of people gather to run in the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon to honor the lives lost in the Oklahoma City bombing. This devastating day could have overwhelmed and destroyed our civic spirit, but it brought Oklahomans together. People here showed up for each other.

When we come together to run, we are running to remember those lost. That said, the run isn’t a somber occasion. It’s joyful in a gritty and purposeful way; a reminder that this community continues to forge a new future together with every step we take. Together, we are running for a hopeful tomorrow even as the day stands as an echo of grief.

When Clay Bennett and the ownership group acquired the Seattle Supersonics and brought the team to Oklahoma City, they were breathing new life into this city. The Thunder gave this city a singular cause to rally around, and a shared hope of what could be.

Even now, when new players arrive for the first time in Oklahoma City, General Manager Sam Presti makes sure they visit the Oklahoma City National Memorial. The first time I walked through the Memorial, I remember feeling how sacred the space is. Players often share how going to the Memorial shapes how they see Oklahoma City.

It’s similar to what people do every year when they lace up their Brooks and meet on Harvey early one Sunday morning in April. We are running as one for the city. We remember. We don’t just run 25,000 races—we run as one. For the city. For each other. Together.

Every time players put their game jerseys on, it isn’t just about 18,203 people chanting “MVP,” shouting “Luuuuuuuuuuuuuu” or experiencing this wildly rabid fan base barking. They’re playing for something bigger. The championship t-shirts say it well on the back:

WON FOR THE CITY.

“That parade felt bigger than basketball,” Kelsie Downs said. “It was a moment where the team and the city fully became one … people from every background, shoulder to shoulder, celebrating something that made us all feel proud to be from OKC.”

ONE FOR THE CITY.

The race finishes at Scissortail Park, just as the parade did. When players stood on the Scissortail stage, the theme of brotherhood and family echoed as loudly as it did throughout the Nick Gallo interviews this season. Aaron Wiggins said it well that day: Fans showed up even while pundits were referring to the Thunder as the Black Hole of the NBA back in 2021. Oklahomans are gritty and resilient. Through it all, it’s sweeter to stand together and win.

MOMENTS MATTER

“The people of Oklahoma City will never forget this day. June 24, 2025, has been the single greatest day in our city’s history.” – Mayor David Holt

As NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander said from the stage at Scissortail Park: “Don’t ever forget this. Moments in life like this, they don’t come and go often. Make sure you enjoy this moment with your family, your friends, your loved ones.”

It’s the power of the moment. We don’t remember every detail along the way, but we will always remember moments.

Shai again and again on the step-back jumper at the free throw line. J-Dub rocking the rim and causing 70-year-old men in the arena to bark with the same tenacity as the 7-year-old boys. Chet blocking shot after shot. Caruso, Wallace and Dort applying so much pressure we watch the other team turn the ball—and their dreams—over to this stifling defense. Jaylin “Jay-Will” Williams walking up to the microphone at Scissortail Park and shouting with a smile as wide as the Pacific Ocean, “HEY MAN, WE CHAMPS!”

“It was more than a parade, it was a moment, and one of the biggest moments in the history of OKC. So much so we’ll be telling our grandkids about it,” Matt Stansberry said, reflecting on the day.

The parade reminded us: Before we rush on to what’s next, pause and make this a moment. Because moments like this don’t just matter—they make us.

A NEW ERA

We began a new era in Oklahoma City that June day. The parade was purely a celebration. We still carry the stories of tragedy, and the city has the scars to show for it. “The parade was a glimpse into a new bright future for Oklahoma,” Marcus Jackson said. “Diverse communities all smiling, cheering and high-fiving the players. This team’s hard work, unity and youthful camaraderie is a movement/dynasty this city can build around. From the 80-year-old to the 8-year-old, we are proud to say we live in OKC.”

We’re discovering a new identity in OKC. We are the city of champions.

“Like this team, Oklahoma is special,” Jessica Rimmer said. “The level of pride felt by each person who cheered this team to a championship is a reflection of the deep belief that our best days are ahead.”

A golden trophy on the banner covers the Omni. Players lifted a golden trophy on top of buses. All under the golden light of a new day. We aren’t just a city hoping for what could be. We have learned how to win together. We have entered our golden era.

It’s a new day in Oklahoma City. We’ve discovered this is a place where you can touch your dreams. We are the city where champions rise from the ashes.

The Face of INTERVENTIONAL PAIN MEDICINE

E. Morgan Pollard, M.D. Align Interventional Pain

Dr. Emily Morgan Pollard is the founder of Align Interventional Pain, a leading medical practice focused on minimally invasive, evidence-based treatments for chronic pain. A former NCAA Division I athlete, she competed on the Baylor University women’s golf team while earning her undergraduate degree. That experience shaped her drive, focus, and appreciation for movement and recovery.

She earned her medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, completed a residency in anesthesiology, and pursued fellowship training in interventional pain at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Since opening Align in 2020, Dr. Pollard has been dedicated to helping patients reclaim their quality of life. With clinics in north Oklahoma City and Enid, her team offers innovative treatments to reduce pain, restore function, and help patients avoid long-term opioid use or major surgery. Every care plan is personalized to meet each patient’s goals and lifestyle.

Dr. Pollard believes effective pain care starts with listening, educating, and empowering. Whether treating spine conditions, joint pain, or nerve-related issues, her mission is to help patients return to the activities they love.

Outside of work, she enjoys golfing, traveling, staying active on her Peloton, and spending time with her husband and two children. Dr. Pollard is proud to serve Oklahoma with expert, compassionate care that improves lives.

The Face of ENDODONTICS

If a root canal sounds like your worst nightmare, you don’t know Dr. Victoria Ball.

At Contemporary Endodontics of Oklahoma, Dr. Ball specializes in caring for the inside of the tooth when it becomes inflamed or infected. She diagnoses and treats complex causes of tooth pain caused by decay, cracks, fractures, inflammation or infection.

In the past, root canal procedures had become synonymous with pain and dread. But modern methods have made patient anguish over root canals a thing of the past.

“A lot of patients who need a root canal are in pain and fear seeking treatment,” says Dr. Ball, an Endodontist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of cracked or fractured teeth, inflamed or infected nerves, abscess, initial root canal treatment as well as retreatments of failed prior root canals.

“Thanks to modern technology, a root canal procedure takes less time and has a higher success rate than ever before. The majority of patients leave feeling better than when they came in.”

Patients appreciate the attention they receive from Dr. Ball

and her staff, especially since anxiety can be high when it comes to root canal procedures. “I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Ball and her staff for my root canal,” said one patient. “They have a way of ensuring that you are comfortable, that everything is explained to you – and are very empathetic, which shows that they truly do care about you as a person, not just another patient. I highly recommend their practice.”

Finally, while she said the anatomy of each tooth presents a unique challenge as all teeth are different, Dr. Ball said her goal is singular: to provide the highest level of endodontic care and achieve the best results for her patients.

“Unfortunately, some teeth are past the point of saving, and in those situations, we use 3-D imaging, microscope examination and experience to make the proper diagnosis,” she says. “That said, I believe that no tooth should ever be pulled if it can be saved! There’s nothing more satisfying to me than taking a patient’s pain away and helping them to save their natural teeth.”

The Face of RECRUITING, CONSULTING & STAFFING

Bettye Taylor & Pam Dunbar

Whether they’re helping us stay healthy through routine office visits or providing critical care for serious injuries, Oklahomans count on their dedicated healthcare providers to be there when they need them most.

Under the supervision of Bettye Taylor and led by Pam Dunbar, Express Healthcare Staffing focuses on registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, radiology technicians, pharmacy technicians, dental assistants, occupational therapists, behavioral health providers and more. And Express is also a staffing source for administrative functions such as reception, coding, billing and accounts receivable.

“Registered nurses are always in short supply and the demand for medical assistants, licensed practical nurses and other allied health positions are almost constant,” said Pam Dunbar, Express Healthcare Staffing Director. “But Express is accustomed to challenges, and we are dedicated to providing our clients with the qualified staff their patients count on.”

The first step in the Express process is to credential each clinician through the National Credentialing Center, which adheres to Joint Commission performance measurements that serve as the gold standard in healthcare.

“We love Oklahoma, and we love serving Oklahomans by bridging workforce gaps through strong relationships that bring clients and clinicians together to ensure great patient care for everyone,” Taylor said.

Bettye Taylor also serves as regional director of Specialized Recruiting Group, focusing on candidates at the professional level, including C-Suite recruiting across most industries.

Whatever your recruiting, consulting, or staffing needs, we have you covered.

The Face of OPHTHALMOLOGY

Ralph B. Hester III, MD

Dean McGee Eye Institute

As an ophthalmologist with over 30 years of surgical experience, I’ve always been fascinated by intraocular lenses (IOLs)—especially since advanced technology lenses first entered the U.S. market in 2005. At the Northwest OKC office of the Dean McGee Eye Institute, my team and I have seen many IOLs come and go—some remain in use, while others have been replaced by newer innovations. When adopting new technologies, we carefully evaluate what has worked for other practices across the country and why some approaches fail.

When RxSight’s Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) launched in the U.S., we immediately recognized its potential as a game-changer. It was the first IOL technology that allowed patients to truly “drive the experience.” This marked a major shift in how cataract surgery could be personalized, and as a long-standing leader in safety and outcomes in Oklahoma, we knew our approach needed to prioritize the patient experience.

We found that success with this lens relies on a highly collaborative model. At our office, the operating surgeon and the optometrist—who manages presurgical dry eye optimization and post-surgical adjustments—work closely together under one roof, maintaining constant communication throughout each patient’s care. This level of coordination eliminates the confusion we often see when patients are passed among a referring physician, surgeon, and nonaffiliated optometrist.

This integrated, team-based model ensures a smoother, more personalized experience and better outcomes. Our patients appreciate the clarity, continuity, and results—and their feedback confirms it.

The Face of PRIMARY CARE

“This helps us tailor our care to each person’s unique needs.” This approach ensures that patients feel respected and valued, a critical aspect of effective healthcare.

The practice’s small size allows it to stay agile, quickly adapting to new developments in medical science. This flexibility ensures that patients receive the most current treatments available, enhancing the quality of care provided.

Located in the 405 area, where Thatcher grew up, he is committed to improving local health and wellbeing. His practice is often praised for its attentiveness, efficiency, and availability, making it a key healthcare resource in the community.

For Thatcher, the greatest reward is the positive impact on his patients’ lives. “Helping people reach their health goals and live their best lives is incredibly fulfilling,” he said.

This dedication to patient care drives everything at Fountain Park Family Physicians, establishing it as a cornerstone of community health in Oklahoma City.

The Face of ANTIQUES

Lee Anna Ward

Lee Anna Ward began her career owning an antique shop in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Now, 35 years later, she has become the face of the antique industry in the 405 as the owner of Notting Hill Antiques.

Ward moved to Oklahoma City in 2002 after marrying her husband. A stranger to the area, she opened her antique store in Nichols Hills, and soon everyone in OKC loved her prices. So much so, that she wasn’t able to keep stock in her shop.

Ward then changed her business format and became a wholesaler but still opens to the public for antique events to see her customers from her retail days. She then went full force into design projects. In January, Lee moved her studio to Port 164 at 164th and Portland. Her new studio hosts a loft upstairs for design, and the downstairs hosts public antique events. She travels abroad four times a year to curate inventory and holds 3-4 public antique events a year.

“My social media is how everyone keeps up with my travels and my antique events,” Ward said. “I could do interior design full-time, but my projects are booked months in advance. My heart is always in antiques, and now I get to do both.”

Ward designs not only traditional homes, but loves mixing old and new that many find difficult to do with just the right blend. That blend has become her signature and specialty.

DINING

Renaissance on the River

OKANA’s food scene rivals its waterpark for wonder

ne minute, you can be drinking a frozen piña colada at the swimup bar overlooking a lake-sized lagoon that looks more Cabo than OKC, and the next, you can pair rotisserie bourbon butter chicken with skyline sunsets at a gastropub. It’s all part of the transportive grandeur of OKANA, the new $400 million resort and entertainment destination from the Chickasaw Nation, which, along with the First Americans Museum, anchors the newly formed Horizons District along the Oklahoma River.

Unlike anything else in OKC, the numbers are staggering: a total of 404 guest rooms and suites, a 100,000-square-foot indoor water park, a 20,000-square-foot entertainment center and a sandy beach and lagoon that, at 4.5 acres, ranks as the fourth largest pool in the nation. Food and beverages, for a property so immense that it created a new neighborhood, are just as impressive.

With 13 different dining, snacking and drinking concepts, OKANA is basically OKC’s own EPCOT. And it’s all helmed by Director of Culinary Jason Jonilonis, a seasoned chef who helped conceptualize themes and menus for everything from a gastropub and a taqueria to a smokehouse and poolside Asian street food.

“I’ve been doing this almost 42 years,” recalled Jonilonis, homing in on crowd-pleasing concepts that appeal as much to families and couples, as well as travelers and locals. “To open this many concepts in four months is the World Cup of hospitality.”

All but three of OKANA’s eateries—Sliders, Pie Lab and Kaya at the indoor water park—are accessible to the public. These include Jack Rabbit, a gastropub perched on the river and offering chicken-fried Wagyu steak, pastrami Reubens and ale-steamed mussels with stunning skyline views that practically glow at sunset. Down the hall, Chido Tacos X Tequila pairs

GRILLED ATLANTIC SALMON WITH MANGO SLAW, BABY BOK CHOY, JASMINE RICE AND GINGER BUTTER SAUCE AT JACK RABBIT
FAJITAS WITH WAGYU ADOBO SKIRT STEAK, CHICKEN AND JUMBO SHRIMP AT CHIDO TACOS X TEQUILA

premium tequilas with Mexican fare like carnitas tacos, poblano-braised chicken enchiladas and sopapilla cheesecake. Just outside the hotel, Smokehouse Social offers sports simulators and burly barbecue, like slowsmoked brisket, wood-grilled rib-eye platters and burnt-end queso, in a convivial setting akin to a lavish backyard cookout by the pool.

At the pool, which offers day passes for locals, guests can order drinks at OKASIS, an adults-only swim-up bar overlooking the lagoon, or chicken strips and sandwiches from counter-service Waterbyrd. As Jonilonis pointed out, the resort is also working on a cabana delivery package, so guests can enjoy food and drink service from the comfort of their poolside lounge. Other options include Market 56, an indoor cafe stocked with coffee, pastries, sandwiches and salads; and OKANA Candy Co., for all your milkshake and ice cream needs.

The newest dining addition is Curveball Kitchen, a neoteric sports bar with batting cage-like baseball simulators and food that the chef billed

as “comforting, exciting and fun,” like burgers, pretzels and mac & cheese. “Everything we do, we cook with love,” Jonilonis said. “We have that emotional attachment to a really high-quality product—serving beautiful food that’s an enhancement to the water park experience.”

Since opening in February, OKANA has made a splash for its sheer size and scope, and it’s already taking shape as a dining destination for locals and travelers alike.

“We want to become a very serious player in some of the best restaurant categories here,” said Jonilonis of his ambitions for the resort. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to open something this big. The goals, and the team we’ve assembled to accomplish what we’ve accomplished, is something I’ll be proud of my whole career.”

SMOKED CHICKEN WINGS, BURNT-ENDS QUESO AND CRISPY FRIED PICKLES AT SMOKEHOUSE SOCIAL
PUB BURGER AT JACK RABBIT

Unlocking The Vault

OKC’s hottest new cocktail bar has roots going back nearly a century

The Vault, the subterranean bar at The National hotel downtown, is located in what was the vault for the bank that originally occupied the Art Deco tower— the first skyscraper in Oklahoma City upon its completion in 1931. When it re-emerged as a hotel in 2022, the vaulted bar was The Library of Distilled Spirits, but following a mission to connect deeper with its history, it was recently rebranded and reborn as The Vault.

“We wanted to establish who we are, and that meant creating an actual identity for the space, and tying it into the hotel and its importance within the hotel,” explained Zak Lindahl, beverage director at The National. This meant highlighting the bar’s unique location as an immersive backdrop for a bespoke cocktail experience that feels like traveling in time, right down to cocktail “survey” cards where guests fill out their preferences, and bartenders customize drinks from scratch. While that’s happening,

Lindahl said, guests are free to explore the vintage safety deposit boxes, which contain historic letters left behind from its bank era.

The Vault’s new drink list and decor sports just as much showmanship. “We’re not spinning bottles around our heads, but we’re elevating everything, from the decor to the artwork to the visuals of the cocktail,” Lindahl noted. “We stepped up our cocktail presentation game, and got a little creative with recipes.” Such as the Enter: Dragon, a gin-based holdover from the Library of Distilled Spirits days, which now comes billowing with “dragon’s breath” smoke out of a black martini glass. Other standouts include Barrel O’Monkeys, which uses Angel’s Envy Rye that’s barrel-aged in-house, and paired with banana-infused bourbon, molasses, walnut bitters and maplewood smoke.

Along with elevated food and decor, which includes oysters with smoked trout roe and brand-new artwork in an ambient space

bedecked with cozy lamps and leather-bound cocktail books, it’s all part of a contemporary glow-up designed to celebrate the past. In lieu of happy hour, for instance, The Vault offers “banker’s hours,” which implement those “survey cards,” customized cocktails and safety deposit boxes for a bold new spin on tradition.

“I’ve come from places that were the cocktail destinations of Oklahoma City,” recalls Lindahl. “It was a smaller market back then, and now with The Vault, I don’t want to be just the best place to have a drink; I want to be the place where you have the best experience overall, like you just stepped into a piece of history in downtown Oklahoma City, and that you’re a part of history for even a moment.”

Aria Ready for This?

OK City Opera brings music to new spaces

hen you think of opera, you may think of a concert hall with crystal chandeliers, an audience dressed to the nines and a performance made up of a huge cast, intricate storylines and massive set design. In an effort to break this connotation, OK City Opera is a non-profit opera company whose tagline is “traditional opera in nontraditional spaces,” bringing incredible opera performances to approachable venues for Oklahomans to enjoy.

Spearheaded by Artistic Director Danielle Herrington and Executive Director Alexandria Velders, OK City Opera was founded in 2017 as a local chapter of the non-profit Opera on Tap, which is based in New York. The goal was to bring opera to the people in unexpected locations, specifically bars and restaurants. During their years as Opera on Tap, Herrington and Velders produced the recurring 10-Minute Festival, featuring short operatic works. One piece from the 2019 festival was called No Justice, No Peace by composer Chris Prather. In 2021, following a year-and-a-half hiatus during COVID, Prather approached the company with his completed full-length opera of the same name. The world premiere of No Justice, No Peace was produced from the initial workshop to a full staged production in 2022. “That

project was the catalyst for us to decide we were ready to step away from Opera on Tap and grow into our own entity,” Velders said. And so, this executive team applied for a 501c(3) last summer, and OK City Opera was born.

OK City Opera has partnered with OK Cider on Film Row, where members of the company perform monthly variety-style shows with song choices revolving around a specific theme. “Our shows are usually 90 minutes long, with an intermission. Showtime is 8 PM and tickets are just $15. OK Cider is familyfriendly, so you can bring in food and have a drink and enjoy the show,” Velders said.

The roster is about 45 professional singers, who rotate based on the theme of the show. These musicians arrive prepared to sing their selected aria and ready to rehearse any ensemble numbers just two hours prior to the performance.

The first show of this season, Dueling Divas and Dazzling Duets, occurs Aug. 16 at OK Cider, which is a crowd favorite and one of its biggest fundraisers. “We will have four different duels that we plan throughout the night that is singer versus singer within a certain category. Each vocalist will sing an aria, then the audience will vote with their dollars on their favorite,” Velders explained.

“It is just a really fun way to get the audience excited about opera and also raise money for our small nonprofit,” Herrington elaborated. “The arts community typically focuses on outreach to children, but we think there should be outreach for adults, as well. These performances provide a space for adults to be immersed into opera in a way they have maybe never had the opportunity to be before. We create a visceral, vibratory experience that is so much more than just watching a performance on the internet.”

Other themes this year include Aria Grab Bag on Sept. 27, where the audience will draw song titles to determine the set list, a Halloween spectacular on Oct. 31 and All Fached Up, a gender bend on Nov. 21.

In addition to the monthly performances, OK City Opera also produces the two-day Micro Opera Festival each spring, which focuses on performing new works and commissioning local composers to write new short operas and musicals.

Sculpting the Standard

A conversation with LaQuincey Reed

LaQuincey Reed doesn’t consider himself an artist who’s “made it.” But one look around his downtown Oklahoma City studio, and it’s clear he’s carved out something far more substantial—an identity rooted in resilience, representation and the human figure.

“I started off drawing and painting,” Reed said. “I didn’t really sculpt until I got into college. I think that might’ve been my sophomore or junior year.”

That shift ultimately led him to spend nearly six years assisting on the Oklahoma Land Run Monument. During that time, he was still trying to balance painting and sculpture—until one moment made the choice clear. “I remember being in my apartment, working on a painting, and I just wasn’t progressing like I wanted to,” he said. “I put my paintbrush down and said, ‘I’m gonna focus on sculpting.’”

Reed now works in oil-based clay material that offers flexibility but isn’t built to last. “It can never be the final product,” he explained. “It’ll melt in the sunlight.” Afterward, the sculpture is sent to a foundry where a wax casting is made and used to transform his final work into bronze. “The bronze is the finished product,” he said. “The clay can be reused for the next project.”

Working with bronze presents its own set of challenges and rewards. It’s a labor-intensive process, but the result is a durable and timeless piece of art.

His subject matter always returns to the human figure. “That’s the basis for everything,” Reed said. “Here lately, a lot of my work has been focused on Blacks in the West—Black cowboys, historical and contemporary.”

That focus is evident in recent projects, such as an 8-foot sculpture of civil rights activist Alberta Jones, bound for Louisville, Kentucky; a Native American figure for an apartment complex in Oklahoma City’s Plaza District; and Barney Ford, a formerly enslaved man who became a successful businessman, civil rights leader and advocate for the 15th Amendment, which will go to Cheyenne, Wyoming. He’s also completing a statue of Gayla Peevey—the young singer of “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas”—for the Oklahoma City Zoo.

Although he has built a solid foundation in Oklahoma, Reed is eager to expand. “I’ve been trying to break into Texas … maybe Kansas,” he said. “You never know who’s going to be interested in what you’re doing.”

Reed said he’s always open to new opportunities and welcomes the chance to connect with potential clients. “I’m always looking for commissions. I’ve had a steady flow since 2021, but I’m always thinking, ‘After this one, what am I gonna do next?’ It never hurts to talk to somebody and see if we can get something together.”

One project he dreams of bringing to life is “The Oklahoma Standard,” a monument that honors the state’s spirit of community and resilience. “I sculpted it about 10 years ago, and have it tucked away on a bottom shelf in my studio,” he said. “It had a woman representing Oklahoma, a child, and people helping one another—emerging from this entryway. Everyone who saw it gravitated toward it. I’d love to do it big; 7- or 8-foot figures. I don’t think there’s anything out there that speaks directly to the Oklahoma standard.”

Reed is building more than sculptures. He’s crafting narratives in clay that speak to identity, history and humanity. “You’re not a robot. You’re not AI. You’re a human being—you’re gonna make mistakes,” he said. “I hope people can appreciate the fact that it was done by a human being.” In every gesture and detail, Reed’s work reflects that belief, rooted in purpose, shaped by hand and always reaching for something more.

Catoosa’s homemade, nationally renowned landmark WORDS AND PHOTO BY LINDA

Hugh S. Davis just wanted to do something special for his wife Zelta, who was fascinated with whales. So, he built her one for their anniversary. Little did he know that children and adults from across the United States and beyond would enjoy it too.

That gift is the Blue Whale of Catoosa, a popular and surprising landmark along Route 66; for more than 50 years, it has been enticing visitors to pull over and take a closer look.

Davis was director of the Tulsa Mohawk Zoo from 1931 until 1966. After retirement he operated a local snake and alligator farm and opened Nature’s Acres and the Animal Reptile Kingdom, known as A.R.K., to educate people about nature and animals. But his wife’s collection of whale figurines inspired him to add what would quickly become the most popular attraction. Davis drew up plans for a whale that would measure 20 feet tall and 80 feet long. He was a man of many talents, but he needed help from friend Harold Thomas to weld the metal skeleton of the whale, a job that took 100 hours. And Thomas happily did it for free.

Davis kept notes documenting the process, materials and cost that included 2,920 hours to

hand-mix 126 sacks of dry concrete and apply, one five-gallon bucket at a time, to the lifesize structure. Other items were 1,179 feet of 2-inch pipe for $451; 2,454 linear feet of wood for $473.93; and 15 tons of sand. Total cost was $1,783.46.

Built on the family’s pond and completed in July 1972, the whale immediately attracted visitors of all ages who wanted to slide down the tail, climb a ladder into its upper belly, peek through the holes in its head or swim in the cool water that originally was fed by a spring.

The whale originally was intended for family enjoyment, but it was too enticing for friends, townspeople and passersby. Boats provided by Nature’s Acres and nearby picnic tables and concessions encouraged visitors to stay and play.

By the 1980s, Davis’ crippling arthritis made it difficult for him to maintain the recreation area. The grounds became overgrown, the facilities destroyed and the pond a dirty eyesore. Thieves stole everything they could carry out.

The Blue Whale, with peeling paint and fading color, was closed in 1988. The faster interstate system pulled some traffic from

Route 66 for a few years, but travelers would once again become infatuated with what is also known as the Mother Road.

Davis died in 1990, and his wife passed away in 2001, but their grown children began to envision what their father’s creation could be again. And they had the support of community volunteers and businesses to help preserve the signature landmark.

The Blue Whale continues to be a popular attraction, but some restrictions apply today. Because of liability concerns, visitors can no longer swim in the pond, slide from the whale or climb inside. But that doesn’t prevent them from walking inside or posing for a picture in front of Blue’s wide-open mouth.

The city of Catoosa purchased the 14-acre property in 2020 and it’s now a city park; Blue Whale Park is being redesigned and updated while preserving its nostalgic appeal.

And, of course, Blue will be there to greet visitors young and old, first-timers and old friends for the 100th anniversary of Route 66 in 2026. Who can resist a big blue whale wearing a perky little hat and sporting a big, friendly grin?

Not Your Average Merger

How an Oklahoma coffee shop with a cause is changing the game

It’s a move not driven by profit, but a unique partnership with a purpose that is likely to pique your interest. Stella Nova, an Oklahoma-based modern coffeehouse brand known for its polished interiors and consistently brewed coffee, has handed over the keys to all four of its metro locations to Not Your Average Joe (NYAJ), a nonprofit café built around inclusion, community and exceptional coffee. This is not your average merger; it’s a game-changer.

“The generosity of this gift from Stella Nova will enable us to blend the best of both worlds,” said Tim Herbel, founder and executive director of NYAJ. “The elevated community experience and intentional efficiency of Stella Nova with Not Your Average Joe’s exceptional coffee. This gift will help us continue dispensing caffeine and hope across Oklahoma and the world.”

The handoff—valued in the millions—includes locations in downtown OKC, Norman, Crown Heights and Edmond. And for Not Your Average Joe,

the move is not just growth. It is a leap forward in its mission to make workspaces more inclusive.

Founded in 2019, Not Your Average Joe may look like a typical neighborhood coffee shop, but is also a nonprofit that exists to provide meaningful employment opportunities to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Walk into any NYAJ location and you will find warm, welcoming staff serving hand-crafted drinks and baked goods, all in a space where everyone is treated like they matter—because they do. “At Not Your Average Joe, we’ve created a space where people of all abilities belong, and not just belong; they’re valued,” Herbel said.

The merger now makes NYAJ the largest coffee chain in Oklahoma, with over 200 employees, more than 150 of whom are neurodivergent. But this is not a charity model. These are trained baristas, shift leads, bakers and cashiers who contribute to a high-quality customer experience.

NYAJ supports local businesses and suppliers, featuring roasts and

blends that rival any upscale coffee shop. Menu favorites, such as the lavender honey latte or cold brew with house-made vanilla, are just the beginning. The shops’ baked goods are fresh; their branding is charming without being gimmicky; and their service is personal. This is coffee made with care, and for a reason. When you walk into a NYAJ location, you’re not just a customer, you’re part of a community.

For Stella Nova regulars, the transition has been surprisingly seamless. “If you are used to going to Stella Nova, you probably won’t notice much change,” Herbel said. “Your wait time is going to be about the same. You’re going to see a lot of the same faces.” What you will notice, though, is the feeling. There’s something undeniably hopeful about seeing someone who once struggled to find employment now confidently crafting your cappuccino.

The partnership has also inspired Blend Ability, a short documentary that shines a spotlight on NYAJ’s team and mission. Filmed in vérité style,

it skips voiceover narration and lets employees share their own stories, unscripted and unfiltered. The film has already won five international awards, been nominated for a “Best Social Impact Documentary” award and continues to spark conversations across the country. “The stories we captured were raw, moving and deeply human,” said director Valentina Gutierrez of VGM Visual Storytelling.

This merger is about raising the bar on what community-focused entrepreneurship can look like. Stella Nova built a respected coffee brand rooted in consistency and quality. Not Your Average Joe is building a movement—one inclusive cup at a time, inspiring hope and a sense of possibility in the community. This is a story of inspiration and possibility, a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together.

And in a world that often celebrates profit over people, it’s refreshing to see a merger that’s brewed from generosity, trust and shared purpose.

OVERHEARD

Plans are moving forward at the Legacy at Covell, on the northwest corner of I-35 and Covell in Edmond. Recent plans show that in addition to a new Whole Foods in the center of the development – only the second in the OKC area – there will also be shops, Chipotle, Texas Roadhouse, and a first for Oklahoma, Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant.”
