Different Challenge, Same Result

A

s you may recall, Shoreland Lutheran High School sent four students from its newly minted STEM Academy to the GE Design and Build Challenge at the Milwaukee Maker Faire last September. Those 4 students stunned 11 other teams, many of whom were college level engineering students or professionals working in the field. A new crop of Shoreland STEM students, along with a returning champion, wanted to assure you that was no fluke!

On September 24, 2016, eight students forming two different teams of four not only defended their title but also finished as the runners up, defeating a tough team

from the Marquette University Engineering School.

After the first round it was determined a runoff would need to be held between the top 3 teams. Both of the SLHS teams found themselves competing against a team from Marquette University Engineering with a strong design. In the end, the team made up of Kenny Russell, Max Schilling, Ben Salfer, and Elias Patterson emerged as the GE Design and Build Champions while the team made up of Leland Weingart, Jack Schilling, Isaac Saldivar, and Michael Meinke finished in second place. These students were again the only high school students in the competition. Congratulations to both teams on this incredible accomplishment!

New Faces of Shoreland J

eremy Strassburg is the new Spanish 1 and 3 teacher at Shoreland. He is also coaching JV boys soccer and JV boys basketball.

Jeremy is married to Julie and they have three children, Emmet (8th grade), Natalie (6th grade) and Riley (4th grade) who attend Trinity Lutheran in Caledonia, WI. The Strassburgs spent the last 14 years in Phoenix, Arizona where Jeremy served as the Spanish teacher at Arizona Lutheran Academy. The family (mostly the kids) is looking forward to experiencing a full winter.

arah Selle is the new Biology instructor at Shoreland.

Sarah and her husband Jay went to Fox Valley Lutheran High School and went on to graduate from Martin Luther College. They moved to Racine from Redwood Falls, MN where Jay was serving as third grade teacher. Jay received a call and is teaching seventh grade at Wisconsin Lutheran School. They have joined First Evangelical in Racine. They are excited to be a part of these awesome ministries!

Pacer Inventor

eet Jingze (Mike) Wu, a senior Shoreland international student and inventor. Mike was inspired by the needs of people in developing countries and last year’s Environmental Science project to invent an economical and effective air pollution mask.

Explain the project that you were assigned in Mr. Zimmerman’s class.

“We were assigned to come up with constructive ideas that would break concept of how our society values things traditionally. He called it ‘a game changing project’.”

In general, what did you design?

“An affordable air mask for low income people living in polluted areas.”

What problem will your invention solve?

There are many people in the developing countries with little to protect themselves from the air pollution, which leads to about seven million premature deaths in the world every year. I am trying to help those people gain better protection, and reduce the death rate caused by the air pollution.

What were your goals of the product you created?

• “To make air masks affordable for lower income people.”

• “To break the limitations of the traditional air mask so people can produce their own air mask whenever and wherever.”

• “To block PM particles and the pollutants in the air effectively. “

What techniques did you use to create your product?

“It actually sounds pretty easy. I collect waste paper from the recycling bin, and restructure the gap between paper’s fibers in water. Then I reshape the fibers through a special screen and remove the extra water to get the final product.”

Why did you get a patent?

“I want to help people who do not have much political right or a powerful voice to live better in our modern society.

Therefore, I do not want any individual or organization to make any profit from my invention.”

What are your next steps in making your invention a commonly-used product?

• “To ask help from non-profit organizations to use their resources to connect my product to people in need.”

• “To set up a fund, and create my own organization which will focus on solving air pollution problems and its side effects.

“The second idea requires huge resources, and manpower to reach the goal. Therefore, that will not happen until some time.”

F

or most high school students, summer jobs are nothing to write home about. For Ethan Woller, simply the videos from his summer job could have gone viral!

Ethan has spent his summer working with Dr. Kevin Crosby, the head of the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium and Professor of Physics, Astronomy, and Computer Science at Carthage College. Ethan met Dr. Crosby as Shoreland Lutheran High School forged a relationship with Carthage College and the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium prior to debuting its Aerospace Engineering course this fall.

In early June, Ethan flew with a team from Carthage College to Florida to participate in several test flights of the Modal Propellant Gauging System. This system, developed by Dr. Crosby and students at Carthage College, is designed to measure the amount of propellant remaining in a spacecraft’s fuel tank while it is

in orbit. NASA needs to develop a new and significantly more accurate device since the methods that have been used since the time of the early space program all use devices designed to measure within earth’s gravitational pull. Dr. Crosby hopes that his team’s design is adopted into NASA’s future manned spacecraft design. If successful, the team’s design could be implemented on the Orion spacecraft which is being developed for manned spaceflights to Mars.

ZeroG, a company that specializes in zero gravity flights for both the general public and scientific research, provided the aircraft and the expertise to perform a total of 50 parabolic flights out of a private airport in Sanford, FL. Ethan was on the first 25, collecting data from the experiment that could later be analyzed. Being that they were parabolic flights, Ethan spent a good deal of that time weightless just like an astronaut would in space.

o n Spacecraft to Mars

Ethan’s trip to Florida wasn’t all researched based. His flight team was given all-access passes to the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Base where they were able to visit the heart and soul of where the past and future of America’s space program resides. The many launch complexes, spacecraft prep areas, and vehicle assembly building are places typically only accessible to those who work to prepare a spacecraft for launch and are not accessible to the public. They were also able to witness the launch of two communications satellites aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.

Following the flight tests, Ethan’s flight team returned to Wisconsin and began analyzing the data they had collected. In order to complete this work, Ethan had to learn to code using a software called Python - a software which will debut in Shoreland’s new Introduction to Computer Science course this fall!

As any good group of scientists would do, Dr. Crosby’s team continues work on this project. Ethan along with other members of his flight team were asked to design the next phase of the experiment - carbon fiber wrapped propellant tanks. Ethan has begun using a software called Solidworks (similar to Autodesk Inventor used in SLHS STEM Academy classes) to design the tanks. If all goes well, Ethan will continue to work on this project with Dr. Crosby and his team well into next school year!

If your summer job didn’t provide the kind of excitement you were looking for, consider applying to our STEM Academy in either the Engineering or the Biomedical pathways. God continues to bless these programs and provide opportunities for students to do amazing things with their talents and abilities in His kingdom, and those opportunities should continue to grow as the program grows.

Restructuring for D

uring the 2015-16 school year, the SLHS Board of Directors studied school’s administrative structure. In carrying out this task, they worked with Dr. Gene Pfeifer, President of Bethany Lutheran College (Mankato, MN), and former President of St. Croix Lutheran High School (West St. Paul, MN) as a consultant. In addition, they also studied best practices among Christian high schools of similar size to Shoreland. Specifically, the purpose of the study was to examine Shoreland’s current administrative structure to determine the best organizational model to move the strategic plan of the SLHS ministry forward.

After collecting data through faculty, Board of Directors, and General Board surveys, and much review over a few months, a proposed administrative structure change (President-Principal model) was determined to be the most suitable model to help Shoreland grow in the future. This change, approved by the General Board, will go into effect in the 201718 school year.

Ministry Growth In the new structure, the President will be responsible for the general overall management of the school. He serves as the official school representative to the federation, General Board, Board of Directors, and the community. He has final responsibility for development of the school’s mission, vision, and strategic plan as well as management of the budget, mission advancement, overall personnel decisions, international recruitment, and operation of the school campus and plant. We are very happy to announce that our current principal, Paul Scriver, has been led to accept the call to serve in this new way.

In the near future, Shoreland will start the process of calling for a new principal. The high school principal will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the high school as it pertains to the delivery of education. He reports to the president and works with the faculty and the administration team. His responsibilities include the academic program, instructional staff, the school office, and relations with LES principals. The supervision of these responsibilities is carried out with and through the various members of the directors, department chairs, and faculty.
