Valentine’s Day event Tenants at Cobden Place, Woolton, had a lovely time celebrating St. Valentine’s Day. A local ukulele band was the highlight of their party as well as a raffle where they raised money for The Alzheimer’s Society.

SLH’s CEO gets locked up – but all for a good cause Our chief executive, Julie Fadden, along with other Merseyside business leaders, went behind bars and ‘did time’ - but all in the name of charity.

Julie was arrested and finger-printed before being locked-up in a disused cell overnight to raise funds for two local charities – The Whitechapel Centre and The Merseyside High Sheriff’s Fund. Over £12k was raised in total. Well done everyone!

CALLING ALL SPEKE MEN! Noah’s Ark in Speke run a fella’s drop-in every Tuesday from 12.15pm to 1.45pm.

The session includes a hot dinner, tea and coffee, pool and table tennis. You don’t need to book, just turn up.

WHO NEEDS NIGELLA? Made In Liverpool’s TV Cook, Michelle O’Dwyer recently teamed up with Speke charity Kindred Minds to organise some cookery workshop activities in Speke.

Made In Liverpool became ‘Made In Speke’ as the cookery classes were hosted by The Place To Be on Eastern Avenue.

The classes formed part of the latest local Community Learning offer from Speke Training & Education Centre (STEC) encouraging Speke Garston residents to engage in some new ‘First Step’ learning activities supported by Liverpool’s Adult Learning Service.

Wheelie good news for Cobden tenants Tommy and Karen from Cobden Place are loving their new bikes that have been donated to them by SLH. They have both recently joined a cycle club after taking part in fitness classes at their Independent Living scheme in Woolton and now they can use their own bikes instead of hiring them. They are both delighted with their bikes and can often be seen riding together around South Liverpool!

Beanstalk is a national charity which recruits and trains reading helpers to support primary school pupils with their literacy skills. Volunteers work with 5-11 year olds, two afternoons a week on a one-to-one basis. They currently have vacancies in many of our schools across Merseyside, meaning lots of children need our support.

Servite Court tenants sign up to mySLH Tenants at our independent living scheme, Servite Court in Woolton, took part in a mySLH event where they were shown how to report a repair and get an up-to-date rent balance.

Mrs McCoy said: “I am surprised how easy mySLH is to use. It means I can find out all the things I need online, which is great if Kerry, my scheme manager, is not available.”

Universal Credit goes digital in Speke and Garston this September

Universal Credit rolls together certain benefits such as Jobseeker’s Allowance, Child Tax Credit and Housing Benefit into one single monthly payment into your bank account.

From September, if you have a change in your circumstances that could affect your housing benefit or any other benefit that is covered by Universal Credit, then you will move onto the digital element of Universal Credit.

You could be affected at any time You might not think you are affected at the moment but your circumstances could change at any time. Here are some examples how your change in circumstances could trigger a move over to Universal Credit.

• Having a child • Moving in with your partner • A change in income • Finding or finishing a job • Changes to any health conditions • Starting or stopping to care for a child or adult If you are already on Universal Credit, then you will be asked to move over to the digital element of the service from September. If you don’t, then your payments will stop. Don’t worry, you will be notified by the DWP if and when this affects you.

How does it work?

• Universal Credit is paid monthly in arrears direct to your bank account. This will include money to pay towards your rent which is referred to as housing costs.

• You must manage your claim online and you won’t be able to do any of this over the phone. This will be done through an online ‘journal’ which requires you to keep a log of what you are doing to secure employment if you are out of work. You must keep this up-to-date, otherwise your payments could stop.

• Your entitlement could change on a monthly basis if there are changes in your income such as working more or fewer hours.

What should I do now?

We know this is a big change for some people and we want to help you manage the move to Universal Credit. Here are some things you can do to prepare: • Get an email address if you haven’t already got one. If you need help with this, pop along to one of our digital drop-in sessions at Reach on Thursdays 9am - 4pm.

• Open a bank, building society or credit union account.

• Get in touch with our Benefits Advice Team who can offer you advice and support. This is particularly important if you are found fit for work after an ESA assessment.

Have your say on the future of South Parade We have been working with local residents to find out what your thoughts are for the future of South Parade in Speke.

Working with a company called PLACED we have carried out workshops with pupils at local primary schools, held interactive sessions with the local community and took to the streets with Ed the Campervan to find out your thoughts and ideas.

We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part.

You’ve given us lots of ideas and inspiration about what the future for South Parade could look like.

If you’ve missed any of these sessions, don’t worry, it’s not too late to have your say. Come along to a fun day on Saturday 5 May where you can look at the ideas for the area and chat to us about them. Check out our Facebook page for more information.

Working together to reduce flytipping We are working closely with Liverpool City Council to help combat the problem of flytipping.

In March, we held a recycling and clean-up day in Garston where 10 community skips were placed in different locations across the area.

This event was really popular with

residents and we will be doing something similar in Speke very soon.

Flytipping is illegal. The council are issuing on-the-spot fines of £80 to anyone who is found flytipping and will continue to concentrate their efforts in the Speke Garston area.

If you discover flytipping or see someone flytipping, get in touch with Liverpool City Council on 0151 233 3000 or report it online at www.liverpool.gov.uk. Don’t forget you can use the FixMyStreet app to take photos of flytipping and report them on the spot.

Tips to reduce your household waste Did you know that on average each household produces around one tonne of rubbish every year? Here are our top five tips to help you reduce waste around your home: 1.

Buy less. Sounds simple, but the less you buy, the less rubbish you will create. Try to only buy things i.e. new clothes, home furnishings etc when it is absolutely necessary.

Use leftover food. We often throw away perfectly good food. Plan your meals for the week and check what food will be left over from a recipe and see what you can make from it.

Share any magazines you buy with friends and family - read them and pass them on. You could ask your hairdresser whether they want them too!

Choose to get your bill statements online rather than by post to reduce paper usage.

Don’t throw away old towels, clothes and bedding. Cut them up to make dusters and cleaning cloths.

The Otterspool Recycling Centre is open until 8pm in the summer months where you can recycle electrical goods, batteries and much more.

Listening to your views With the next issue of Bulletin, we will be sending you a tenant satisfaction survey so that you can tell us what you think about the services we provide. We carry out this survey every two years and use your feedback to help shape the services we deliver to you.

Here are just some of the ways that we used your feedback from the last survey in 2016 after you told us improvements could be made in certain areas.

We introduced our ‘Own our World’ campaign to continue to develop a ‘right first time’ approach across the organisation.

We launched SLH Home Swap, a service that aims to make it quick and easy for tenants to swap homes with other SLH tenants. So far 12 swaps have been completed.

We are embarking on plans to regenerate South Parade, Speke (See page 7).

We launched the Volunteer Academy, a training programme to help residents build their confidence and gain work experience. So far 24 residents have graduated and we have exciting plans to expand the Volunteer Programme throughout 2018.

We have expanded our Community Safety Team to ensure that we are effectively tackling issues.

We have also restructured our Neighbourhood Services Team so there is now a dedicated team for tenancy management (See page 10).

We are currently exploring options on the future of Garston Urban Village Hall. We recently carried out a community survey in Garston and received over 200 responses with great ideas about what services are needed and lots of offers of support. We will keep you updated as to whether we can get this project off the ground.

Our Property Services Team is currently reviewing homes with high number of repairs in a 12 month period. This is so we can identify any issues or learning opportunities to help reduce these going forward.

Changes to our Neighbourhood Services Team

W

e have changed the way our Neighbourhood Services Team operate to ensure that we are providing the best possible service to tenants. You will still have a Neighbourhood Officer who you can speak to about all matters relating to your tenancy. However you will also have an Income Enforcement Officer and Senior Enforcement Officer too.

Your Income Enforcement Officers will deal with all matters relating to your rent payments to ensure you don’t fall into arrears unnecessarily.

If this happens, the team will be on hand to offer necessary support and advice to get your account back on track. However, if your rent payments are not paid on time then they will be forced to take further action against you, which can put your home at risk.

The income team is split into two: Income Enforcement Officers who are responsible for tenants who have arrears less than £400.

Senior Enforcement Officers who are responsible for tenants with arrears over £400, progressing cases to court when necessary.

What we did on Walkabout On the first Wednesday of every month, all SLH staff leave the office to find out what’s going on in our neighbourhoods and resolve any issues we find. Here’s what we’ve been up to over the last three months.

Keeping your home safe Electricity is part of our lives. We use it from the moment we wake up and throughout the day, which sometimes makes us forget how powerful it can be.

Here are some tips to ensure you stay safe around electricity in and around your home: • Don’t wrap flexible cables around any equipment when it is still warm.

Never bring electrical appliances such as hairdryers, radios or heaters into a bathroom. You could be seriously injured.

•

Check your plug sockets are not overloaded with too many electrical appliances as this could lead to overheating.

• Never cut your grass in wet conditions.

• Switch off and unplug garden electrical items before cleaning, adjusting or checking them.

The importance of electrical tests Every five years, we carry out an electrical test at your home to ensure that your home is safe – this is a legal requirement.

Our new build homes help rebuild careers for local people Our new development at Hale View is doing more than just providing affordable homes – it has helped 55-year-old Charlie Burns into a permanent job in the construction industry.

Charlie undertook an unpaid work placement with contractors Galliford Try which gave him the chance to gain essential construction industry qualifications including CSCS Green Card accreditation, First Aid and Asbestos Awareness.

The placement also gave Charlie varied site experience including erecting site signage, traffic management, site cleanliness and general labouring.

“I am really enjoying the placement.

It is giving me the opportunity to use the skills that I have recently acquired.” said Charlie.

After Charlie’s placement came to an end, Galliford Try were so impressed with the high standard of his work and his work ethic that they offered him a permanent position.

We’re delighted that our latest development has helped Charlie gain the skills and experience to secure permanent work.

Garston community get together for a spring clean.

The Garston community came together on a bitterly cold Saturday in March to pick up litter and clean up Garston Village as part of the national Great British Spring Clean campaign. Over 30 residents and local councillors joined forces for the community litter pick where together they collected over 70

bags of rubbish! Children in Garston also made anti-litter posters which are now displayed all around the village.

Garston Community Forum organised the day and it is hoped that the litter picks will now be held on a regular basis.

Since the course finished I have been motivated and have been coming in to Reach every day. I have done a covering letter, CV and applied for jobs. I have already had a call back for one of these jobs!”

Seven young people have recently been given the opportunity to train for exciting roles at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, thanks to a traineeship scheme delivered at Reach.

Local training provider, Employability Solutions, delivered a six-week traineeship from Reach alongside work placements in the Airport.

The seven trainees from across South Liverpool have positions in Airport Security, Retail, Engineering, Air Traffic Control, Air Traffic Engineering, IT and Customer Services.

Trainee James (21) said, “This is an amazing opportunity. The Airport is on my doorstep and I’d love to get a job here or use it to move into something, maybe an apprenticeship. It’s really exciting.”

We had a fabulous day when we took a group of residents to see an established community garden, Grozone, in Northwich in February. The purpose of the visit was to get inspiration for our very own community garden, Grow Speke, which is flourishing by the day.

Everybody had a great time and came back with heaps of ideas.

Speke tenant, Anastasia, thoroughly enjoyed the day: “Despite the freezing temperatures we had a great time visiting Grozone. Everybody was really friendly and it was lovely to see how the community get together to make this garden work. I’ve now started volunteering at Grow Speke following this visit and would recommend this to anyone who wants to get out of the house, learn new skills and meet new people.”

Speke school children open show home Children from St Ambrose school in Speke officially opened the show home at the Mill Brow development in Speke where 147 homes are currently being built.

Homebuilder, Keepmoat, has been working with the school since work began on the development, most recently creating a spiritual garden on a piece of unused land within the grounds of the school.

Feed the family for under a fiver

PORK AND APPLE CASSEROLE.

his is a delicious Sunday lunch alternative if you don’t fancy spending all your morning in the kitchen – you don’t even have to prepare any meat! Here is a recipe from www.fiverfeeds.co.uk Serves four people. Cost £1.12 per person

4 pork chops 2 onions finely sliced 2 large cooking apples peeled, cored & sliced 15 fresh sage leaves 6 sprigs of fresh thyme 500ml chicken stock made using 2 stock cubes 2tsp Dijon mustard Salt Black pepper

Place a casserole dish over a medium heat with a little vegetable oil and then throw in your pork chops with a little seasoning of salt and pepper.

This should only take a minute or two. Once browned, turn the heat off.

Finely chop the sage and add to the pork chops along with the leaves from your thyme sprigs.

4. Cover with the sliced onion and apple and ensure it is evenly spread across all the chops.
