BEAUTIFUL SEBAGO LAKE

T

he Native American name Sebago means “great stretch of water,” an apt description of Maine’s second largest lake.

Sebago Lake is eight miles wide and ten miles long. Its excellent water quality is the source of drinking water for the City of Portland, which makes the southernmost part of the lake restricted from boating and swimming.

Six towns have shore frontage on Sebago Lake: Windham, Raymond, Casco, Sebago, Standish

and Naples. Sebago’s watershed extends from Bethel to Standish and covers 436 square miles. It is a 35-mile drive around the lake via Routes 302, 114 and 35.

Long Lake, Brandy Pond, Crooked River and the Songo River flow into Sebago Lake and provide 43 miles of continuous waterway for water recreation. Outflow is primarily by way of the Presumptscot River, which flows southeast to the Atlantic. Because of the lake’s size, large boats can cruise the waterway and there are numerous coves and basins for quieter activities like canoeing and kayaking.

The lake is known for great fishing throughout the year. It’s the home of the land-locked salmon, as well as trout, bass and many others.

Ice fishing is popular —there’s even a midwinter ice fishing tournament for hearty souls!

An 8-mile long peninsula known as Raymond Neck juts into the lake. From Cape Road there is access to a car ferry (May-October) that services Frye Island, a large island populated with summer camps, a nine-hole public golf course, beaches and Frye’s Leap Café and Store.

July 4th is celebrated annually with a golf cart parade and fireworks display.

5 Drive over Babb’s Covered Bridge

The Maine Wildlife Park in Gray offers visitors a great opportunity to see wild animals in a natural setting. Located on Route 26, the park is home to a variety of native animals that, for one reason or another, cannot be returned to the wild. Operated by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, the park opens to the public in mid-April. Park hours are 9:30am-4:30pm. An interpretative center offers interactive exhibits and displays to MAINE WILDLIFE PARK

Babb’s Covered Bridge in Windham is the only covered bridge in Cumberland County. It’s in a beautiful location and has long been a favorite subject of artists and photographers. Enjoy picnics, swimming and fishing by the bridge.

8 Hike, ski and learn about farming at Pineland Farms Located in the rolling hills of New Gloucester, Pineland Farms is a 5,000-acre working farm, diverse business campus and educational and recreational venue that welcomes visitors to enjoy its beautiful rural landscape. Visit Pineland Farms in the summer to hike and mountain bike. In winter months enjoy snow shoeing, fat biking, cross country skiing, sledding and skating. Hacker’s Hill on Quaker Ridge, Casco

9 Catch the sunset at Hacker’s Hill

Hacker’s Hill locaated in Casco, high up on Quaker Ridge off Rt. 302, is one of southern Maine’s finest viewpoints. Open to the public May through October from 8:30am to ½ hour after sunset. There’s motor vehicle access 5 days a week. The gate is closed Tuesdays and Thursdays and foot traffic is welcome every day. S

ebago Lake State Park is open yearround and is renowned for swimming, boating, sport fishing, camping and water sports and is a popular destination for area visitors.

The park is on the north shore of Sebago Lake in the towns of Naples and Casco. The 1,400 acre park features a sandy beach, woodland walking trails, ponds, bogs, and a river. The diverse habitat allows for a great variety of plant and animal life. Well-equipped facilities (including wheelchair-accessible restrooms), 250 campsites, family and large group picnic areas, a playground, concessions and two boat launches are in the park.

The Songo Lock connects Sebago and Long Lakes

Power boaters, sailors, kayakers, canoeists and anglers enjoy the Songo River and the historic Songo Lock connecting Sebago and Long Lakes. Songo Lock is the last existing lock of 28 locks built for the Cumberland and Oxford Canal, a 50-mile corridor from the area to the sea. In operation May 1 through October 15, the hand-operated lock provides a fascinating point of interest for boaters and vistors.

Whether hiking on marked trails or bicycling on park roads, visitors find many ways to enjoy the outdoors. An active interpretive program in summer enhances enjoyment of the park through ranger-led activities, programs in the amphitheater and guided hikes. In winter months visitors can discover six miles of groomed trails that provide a peaceful sanctuary for ski touring or long walks and quiet nature observation.

To reach Sebago Lake State Park from Portland and points east and south: turn left onto Songo School Road off Route 302 in Casco and follow the signs. From Naples, take Route 114 and turn left at the State Park sign.

Hike on more than six miles of recreational trails managed by the Gray Recreation Dept.

The Gray-New Gloucester Middle School is located at 10 Libby Hill Road in Gray and you can park in the gravel lot at right. Please do not continue up gravel road and or use the ATV trail at the left corner of parking lot. The trails begin on the school grounds on the other side of the chain link fences that surround the athletic fields. Proceed to the trailhead kiosk by walking around the driveway in back of the school or go around to the front of the school and proceed through the gate of the fence to the Trail Head 1 kiosk. www.libbyhill.org/

t’s fun to get out and experience the natural beauty of our Lakes Region on foot. There are hikes for all ages and abilities.

Please wear blaze orange from October through December. The following are a few favorites and include a bike ride, too.

Mountain Division Trail, Section 3 Windham, Gorham & Standish

Named for the railroad line it parallels, this trail will one day span 52 miles between Fryeburg and Portland.The section currently open in our region is a 6-mile segment between Standish and South Windham that is a relatively flat, wooded trail for hiking, biking, horseback, fishing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Dogs are allowed on leash.

Sawyer Mountain Highlands Limerick & Limington

The Smith Trail is the nicest trail to the summit of Sawyer Mountain. It is 2.4 miles round trip and for part of the way follows the old Sawyer Mountain Road.

On the Limington side, the trail to the summit of Sawyer Mountain is 3.6 miles round trip and follows the old Sawyer Mountain Road.

Dogs are allowed on leash. To access from Route 11 in Limerick, turn on to the Emery Corner Road from near the mill. Follow the

Emery Corner Road for two miles until it ends at the Sawyer Mountain Road. Turn left on the Sawyer Mountain Road and follow it for 1.1 miles down and up hills to the parking lot that is on the right hand side of the road.

Douglas Mountain Trails Sebago

Douglas Mountain offers a network of short but challenging trails that lead up to a stone observation tower with expansive views of the region. The preserve was donated to the Town of Sebago from the Maine Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. A suggested donation of $3 per vehicle is requested to help with the cost of maintaining the trails.

To access the trailhead, follow ME 107 north 5.6 miles from East Baldwin or 10 miles south from Bridgton. Turn onto Dyke Mountain Road. After .8 miles, turn left onto Douglas Mountain Road and follow signs for the parking area and trailheads.

Explore the ruins of Gambo Mills and remnants of the old Cumberland & Oxford Canal on the Gambo Mills walking trail. Access is from the Windham end of the Mountain Division Trail.

There are two trailheads and one parking area.

Jugtown Forest Casco, Naples and Otisfield

5,000 acres of working forest is owned by Hancock Lumber and open for recreation and nature exploration. Enjoy miles of marked trails for walking, biking, horseback riding, hunting and snowmobiling in accordance with the company’s rules and regulations.

From Route 11, take Route 121 through Casco Village and turn at the Hancock Lumber Administrative Offices onto Edes Falls Road.

Deer Hollow Sanctuary Windham

This trail, located on a 16-acre sanctuary, leads down to Mud Ponds and is great for a short hike and bird watching. The trails can be wet in the spring and are not marked but easily followed.

At the traffic light on US 302/ME 35 (1.2 miles north of their intersection with ME 115 in Windham), turn onto Angler Road, a dirt

Donnabeth Lippman Park & Chaffin Pond Windham

This pristine 123 acres includes a 10 acre pond for fishing, hiking and biking trails around the pond, a story walk trail, and a playground for the kids, with plenty of birds and wildlife.

This 6.7 mile trail network offers a variety of easy to moderately difficult trails. Approximately 300’ elevation gain from the parking lot to the 1100’ summit, the trails at Bald Pate Mountain offer scenic views. Dogs are allowed on leash.

To access trailhead, from US 302 in Bridgton, follow ME Route 117 south. In one mile, turn left onto ME Route 107 heading south and drive approximately 4 miles. The main parking area is located at the crest of the hill, on the left side of the road, just past Five Fields Farm apple orchard and cross country ski area.

To access the Micah Trail, continue south on ME Route 107 for .9 miles and turn left on to Moose Cove Lodge Road. The trailhead is .5 miles further with parking and signs. www.loonecholandtrust.org

Raymond Community Forest Raymond

Raymond Community Forest is a 2.1 mile loop trail located near Crescent Lake that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Trails lead to the cliffs of Pismire Mountain and low-impact multi-use trails in the lower forest for walking, hiking, cross country skiing/snowshoeing and mountain biking. Dogs must be kept on leash.

Located on Jordan Bay on Sebago Lake, 1396 Roosevelt Trail off 302 in Raymond. Sandy beach, nice boat launch with dock, large parking lot and porta-potties. Fenced area for dogs.

Located on Sebago Lake in Raymond (Route 302) and open to the public. Site offers parking, beach, nature trail and views, grills and picnic tables, concession stand and restrooms.

No dogs allowed. No boat launch.

Pleasant Lake L

The town of Casco has a small beach and two public boat launches. From Naples, take Route 11 North to Route 121 to Mayberry Hill Road, just after the community center. From the south, take Route 121 from Route 85 off Route 302 in Raymond.

Crescent Lake L

Located 5 miles from the junction of Routes 11 and 121. Beach open to residents only, but the views of the area are worth the drive. From the south, follow Route 302 to Raymond, turn right onto Route 85, and follow 5-6 miles.

Range Pond State Park L

Range (pronounced Rang) Pond, located in Poland, is a great beach for picnicking, fishing and swimming. Long beach with lifeguards, bathhouses, recreation field, several hiking trails and a large picnic area. A public boat launch is available.

Raymond Beach L

Kiwanis Beach L

Family-friendly beach in Standish with picnic tables, concessions, restrooms and a recreation field. Located on Kiwanis Beach Road in Standish. Non-motorized craft are welcome.

Limington Town Beach L

Located on Pequawket Lake and open to public, site features tennis courts, picnic tables, grills and restrooms/changing area. Fee $5/car.

Take Route 25 West to Pequawket Beach Road on right. Take the first right and follow signs.

Limington Rapids on Saco River

Lovely spot on the left side of Route 25 West just over the river to enjoy a picnic and watch kayakers run the rapids. A short walk alongside the river brings you to a small beach where you can swim. Picnic tables, grills, and restrooms are available.

Rich Memorial Beach L

Standish residents (only) have access to Sebago Lake with sandy beach, picnic area, outhouses.

Crescent Lake Raymond Fish: Brook trout, salmon, pickerel, bass and white & yellow perch Lake Size: 2.5 miles by ½ mile, maximum depth of 54 feet, average depth of 17 feet Boat Launch: Public boat launch on Route 85; free, but limited parking.

In Maine, it is illegal to transport, sell, grow or introduce invasive aquatic plants in inland waters. Sticker sales help fund boater education, training of volunteer watercraft inspectors and running washing stations at public launches.

Little Sebago Lake Windham Fish: Bass, perch and chain pickerel Lake Size: 6 miles by 1 mile, maximum depth of 52 feet, average depth of 16 feet Boat Launch: Free public boat launch. From Route 302 in Windham take Angler’s Road to Mt Hunger Shore Road. Free parking but spots fill quickly in the summer months.

Parker Pond Casco Fish: Largemouth bass, white perch and chain pickerel Lake Size: About 1½ miles by 1/3 mile, maximum depth of 19 feet, average depth of 31 feet Boat Launch: Canoes or small boats can gain access along the thoroughfare that connects Parker Pond and Pleasant Lake. Free, but very limited parking.
