A module surface area of 450 x 450 km would be sufficient to cover the power demand of the entire world. Consequently, our sun not only provides energy in abundance – it is also an environmentally responsible source of energy. Better still – the power it delivers is free.

Photovoltaics, i.e. obtaining electrical power directly from solar energy, is an elegant and reliable option. Photovoltaic systems generate energy during the day – precisely when demand is higher. In order to produce roughly the amount of power an average person uses in a year, a solar cell area of 10 m2 is required.

Although Vitovolt, just like Vitosol solar thermal systems, utilises solar irradiation to "harvest" solar energy, the technology, and consequently the design and operation of the two products, are quite different. Whilst in solar thermal systems, energy captured by the collectors is transferred hydraulically via a heat transfer medium to be used either for DHW heating or to back up a central heating system, photovoltaic modules generate electrical energy directly.

Solar framework Annually, the amount of energy that reaches the surface area of the Federal Republic of Germany is equivalent to approx. 80 times the country's total energy consumption. Approximately half that reaches the Earth's surface as direct solar radiation; the other half as diffused light.

Power from the sun Around one third of the primary energy is used to generate power. Around two thirds of this energy is lost during power generation and distribution through the national grid. The provision of electrical power has a considerable impact on the environment. It is therefore particularly worth generating electricity using renewables such as the sun, wind, hydroelectric power and biomass, and obtaining electrical power from a decentralised source close to the point of consumption.

Every year, around 950 to 1200 kWh/m2 reach a horizontal area. Solar cells convert more than 14 percent of this into electrical power, with around two thirds of the energy being yielded in summer and one third in winter. Consequently, our sun not only provides energy in abundance all year round – it is also an environmentally responsible source of energy. Feed-in remuneration If you produce your own power, you can receive a guaranteed remuneration from your power supply utility over 20 years. This is governed by the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) [Germany], which states that energy providers are obliged to accept the renewable power and export it to their grid. Power for your own consumption continues to be drawn from your local power supply utility at the usual tariff. The feed-in remuneration for environmentally friendly photovoltaic power is higher than the consumption tariff. This difference, together with the public loans programmes, help to make photovoltaic systems an affordable investment. In addition, a number of regional subsidies are available. VITOVOLT 200 Installing a photovoltaic system isn't hard to do. With the fully assembled modules, you, too, could soon be getting power straight from your roof.

Installing a Vitovolt photovoltaic system on the roof turns every homeowner into a power generator: Fit photovoltaic modules onto the roof, plug cables together, connect an inverter, done! Vitovolt function explained Basically, a mains-connected solar power system operates in three stages:

1. Harvesting energy Electrons are released when light strikes the photovoltaic modules. Positive or negative charge carriers collect at the electrical contacts resulting in a DC current between the front and back of the cell. This photoelectric effect is produced without mechanical or chemical reactions, and so is maintenance-free and not subject to wear. 2. Power conversion DC power produced by the solar generator is converted by the inverter (also often referred to as the mains feed-in device) into AC power, suitable for the power network (230 V DC at 50 Hz). Proven safety standards and fully developed processors, as well as cutting edge power electronics, ensure effective conversion of the solar power. 3. Utilising energy Contrary to stand-alone systems where the solar power must be stored in rechargeable batteries, systems linked to the mains feed all harvested power directly into the public grid. A separate electricity meter is installed which monitors the power exported to the grid. The generated energy is reimbursed by the electricity supply utility in accordance with the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) [Germany].

Own consumption of solar power For photovoltaic systems up to 500 kWp, the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) offers the opportunity of consuming the generated power near the system while still receiving relatively substantial remuneration. The proportion of power that is not consumed is simply fed into the grid and remunerated in the normal way. With this remuneration of the direct consumption, the legislator wants to encourage the simultaneous generation and consumption of power as well as the resulting relief of the grid. Those who build their own homes can reap further benefits from using additional Viessmann components, such as a heat pump, by raising the proportion of power used on site, making users largely independent of electricity cost increases.

Vitovolt 200: High performance module at an affordable price Vitovolt 200 photovoltaic modules are available with monocrystalline and polycrystalline silicon cells. The photovoltaic module comprises a glass laminate, with individual solar cells being embedded between two plastic foils. A weather-resistant cover foil is used as the back of the module. Panes and foils are laminated together to protect the cells reliably against external weather influences. The fully wired module is particularly easy to install on the roof thanks to its low weight. Easy installation The connection of the photovoltaic modules is prepared at the factory where cables are simply plugged together, whilst the inverters are matched to the individual photovoltaic system. Ready-to-use installation sets are available for the vertical and horizontal above roof installation. The robust aluminium frame of these modules ensures excellent pressure and suction load limits.
