At Slaters, we sell just short of 3 million articles of men’s clothing every year, from suits to socks, to trousers to ties.

We also provide free alterations for a large percentage of the suits, jackets and trousers we sell, so they fit perfectly and help our customers feel great wearing them.

However, if there’s a problem with just 0.5% of the items we sell, like a simple mis-measurement or a mistake in the alteration – that is still 15,000 garments!

I receive many letters and e-mails from customers saying how well we dealt with something that wasn’t right. Of course, I’m initially disappointed that there was a problem in the first place, but then I hear about how quickly and effectively Slaters staff have not only resolved the issue, but also ensured the customer ends up singing our praises.

While we aim to be perfect, we’re not.

No-one is.

So the important thing here is how we redeem ourselves. This is what should set us apart from our fellow retailers – being humble, human, and acknowledging our faults instead of passing the buck or making excuses. You bought the garment from Slaters, so we solve the problem.

As my father Ralph Slater would often say, “Look after your customers and they will look after you.” I couldn’t agree more, and it’s a policy that remains key to our success today.

It is accepted wisdom in the retail industry that an unhappy customer is a great opportunity. Turning a frown into a smile, and a complaint into a happy ambassador is not only immensely gratifying – it’s simple PR that works wonders when those customers spread the word about how great we are, instead of how we messed up.

Slim

Regular

A streamlined and stylish fit that hugs fabric to the body with just a little excess in the right places.

Jackets are nipped in at the waist and have narrower shoulder cuts, giving you a slim and sleek style.

Ah, the classic gentleman’s cut.

I N T E RV I E W: SCOTT KYLE

AN OUTLANDISH TALENT Born in Rutherglen, Glasgow, Scott Kyle is perhaps best known for his roles as Ross in Outlander, Clancy in The Angels’ Share – and as Corporal Stu Pearson in Kilo Two Bravo, a critically acclaimed portrayal of a unit of British soldiers’ experiences while positioned near the Kajaki dam in Afghanistan.

Currently working on the much-anticipated animated series The Man Who Took Too Much, Scott takes time out to talk to Slaters about his career, costumes and choice of everyday outfits.

You’re widely known for your roles in Outlander and The Angels’ Share (directed by none other than Ken Loach) and, of course, Kilo Two Bravo. When did your ‘big break’ come as an actor?

I think I’m still waiting on it to be honest! But in terms of film, my first professional role was on The Angels’ Share, so you could say that was my first big break.

Who have you most enjoyed acting alongside, and working with?

I’ve enjoyed all the projects I’ve worked on, and they’ve all helped me grow as a performer. I think the director who had the biggest impact on my career was Laura Pasetti, an Italian theatre producer and director. In terms of actors, it would have to be the cast of Kilo Two Bravo – they were top lads and we spent six incredible weeks together in Jordan.

You’re currently working on an animated series called ‘The Man Who Took Too Much’. How does this compare to traditional film work or theatre?

It’s been very different to anything else, and I’ve really enjoyed experimenting with the new world that is animation.

Kilo Two Bravo was a big hit, and based on a true story. How does it feel to portray something that affected so many people?

It was a huge honour to be part of the team that portrayed the real paratroopers, who were also involved in the film.

I was also privileged to be at the Scottish BAFTAs to cheer on David Elliot, who picked up Best Actor for his portrayal of Corporal Mark Wright – who sadly lost his life in the incident.

You’re also the Program Manager at Fife Cultural Trust. What does that entail?

It’s an amazing job, programming shows and events for all the Fife theatres, libraries, museums and galleries. We have some amazing venues and buildings in which to put on a whole range of events It’s a huge step up from producing shows or acting in shows, as we’re creating a vision for the whole of Fife, not just one audience or show.

As an actor, you get to wear all kinds of things you normally wouldn’t – especially is costume dramas like Outlander. But what’s your typical everyday look?

At work I wear a suit, which I really enjoy.

I love a good suit from Slaters. If I’m on the red carpet, I normally go for a kilt, but if it’s just a night down the pub, I’m a jeans and T-shirt kind of guy.

What do you look for in a suit?

Just high quality and a good fit – I’m not one for big bright colours, but I go for a nice design.

Why do you choose Slaters when it’s time to add to the wardrobe?

My family has always shopped at Slaters.

The tradition has simply continued through the generations.

What was the last Slaters item you bought, online or in-store?

I popped into the Edinburgh store recently to choose a suit for a dinner event. Peter, the store manager, sorted me out with a cracking three-piece.

What’s next on the horizon for you, rolewise? Any exclusives for our readers?

I start rehearsals in September for a new play at The Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh and the Tron Theatre in Glasgow. It’s called One Mississippi, and it’s brilliant – so come along and see it!
