The stencil fonts Le Corbusier Regular and Condensed by Nico Schweizer were designed around 1999 (based on a zinc stencil set found by Cornel Windlin) and extended into a full character set. Le Corbusier fonts are careful re-interpretations of the originals bringing out the geometric and modern roots of these early 20th century writing tools. Becoming popular during and after the war, stencil were a convenient and simple communications tool. Its application and traces can be found from labeling of shipping containers, banana boxes, political manifestations on walls (a precursor to graffiti) to panitings and architectural drawings by Swiss-French architect, designer, urbanist, writer Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris, who chose to be known as Le Corbusier (wikipedia.org), who is fa mous for being one of the pioneers of what now is called modern architecture or the international style – as far as we know, Monsieur Jeanneret, was not in any way connected to the design or designers of these stencils.
Nico Schweizer Nico attended Art Center School of Design and SVA (School of Visual Arts, New York), followed by internships, collaborations and freelance work for amongst others, Jonathan Hoefler (typography.com), Cornel Windlin (lineto.com), J. Abbott Miller and Luke Hayman (pentagram.com). He went on to art direct for Hugo Boss and then became Creative Director for I.D. magazine (id-mag. com). Nico Schweizer has lectured on graphic design and typography from 2000 to 2003 at Cooper Union School of Design, New York. He is now based in Zürich, Switzerland working as an independent design contractor.
