Three Centuries of THE HORSE IN BRONZE

THE HORSE IN BRONZE
All items are subject to prior sale.
Dimensions are height in inches and centimetres. Where items are shown on a base, this is included in the measurements.
Due to the ambiguities inherent in measuring complex three-dimensional objects, the measurements given throughout this publication are primarily to provide a sense of each sculpture’s scale. They are not intended for reference in issues of authentication etc.

FOREWORD
It is already four years since our last Horse in Bronze exhibition and this show, with exhibits spanning three centuries, is representative of the larger collection of equine sculpture that we have here at The Sladmore.
The Horse is a symbol of eternal interest to sculptors, embodying notions of nobility and vitality. Furthermore, its complex anatomy and sophisticated movement pose a challenge to the artist making it the ultimate sculptural subject.
Horses are integral to many areas of mankind’s life and culture, and we have arranged this catalogue thematically to reflect this. Depictions of the horse tell mankind’s history as well as serving as artworks. This exhibition explores the horse at work; in war; on the racecourse; in sport, as well as those which permeate our myths and legends. Horses remain an enduring symbol of power, hope and renewal in our lives – reflected in sculpture, as vibrant and alive today as it was 200 years ago.
We look forward to welcoming you to Jermyn Street and to see further works please explore our new website.
