Welcome to Monona OVERVIEW

A community of over 8,000 people, the City of Monona offers its residents the advantages of small town living along with easy access to the educational, employment, recreational and cultural opportunities of the Madison metropolitan area. Located on the eastern and southern shores of Lake Monona, the City has over four miles of shoreline and several public accesses to Lake Monona.

Monona has beautiful tree-lined streets, a large community park, a community swimming pool, several small neighborhood parks, a community center, public library and other excellent city facilities. Children attend either the public schools of the Monona Grove School District or the private Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School, or Three Angels Christian School; all have excellent reputations.

HISTORY

The City of Monona, an Indian word for “beautiful,� was inhabited by Native Americans as early as 7,000 B.C., according to the dated artifacts found in the area. However, most of the Indian artifacts that have been found date from the Woodland Culture period, which extended from 500 B.C. until the arrival of the Europeans.

Builders of effigy mounds lived in the area during this period. They buried their dead and accompanying artifacts in earthen mounds that were in the shape of animals as well as other shapes, usually conical and linear. In all, there are at least ten such burial mounds in Monona.

The first white settler to the area, Abraham Wood, arrived about 1837, just as many of the Winnebagos were leaving. Mr.

Welcome to Monona Wood was hired to build a home for the first white family to live in Madison, which had been named the territorial capital in 1836.

Wood married the daughter of the Winnebago Chief DeKaury and built a permanent wood structure for his wife and himself. This building became a landmark in the area and was known as the “Winnebago Squaw’s home.” After repeated usage, “Winnebago Squaw” became “Winnequah.” Today there is a road, park, and two schools Monona has named after the first white settler’s wife. beautiful tree-lined Originally part of the Town of Blooming Grove, Monona was incorporated as a village on August 29, streets, a large 1938. By that time the area had changed from consisting of farmland and summer homes to include more community park, permanent homes and small businesses. Over the a community years the village developed many public services, including police and fire protection, street maintenance swimming pool, and the provision of sewer and water utilities. During the 1950’s the village grew from 2,544 to 8,178, several small which was the largest percentage increase (231%) of neighborhood parks, any community in the state during this decade.

The population increase led to a need for exa community center, panded Village facilities and services, and in 1963 the public library Village built a community center and adjacent swimming pool near the intersection of Nichols Road and and other excellent Healy Lane. In 1967 the Village built a public library at the corner of Nichols Road and Schluter Road, and city facilities. after changing to City status in 1969, a city hall was built on Nichols Road across from the library. This building housed all the other operations of the city (including the Fire and Police Departments).

During 1989 a new public works facility was built at 851 Femrite Drive.

In 1993 extensive remodeling of the City Hall and Community Center took place. Also during 1993 a new community swimming pool was opened to the public. A major renovation and addition was made to the Monona Public Library in 2001.

President’s Message The Chamber of Commerce in Monona is proud to represent some 265 businesses, which employ approximately 14,665 employees. We all take pride in working together on issues that are very important to all the residents and businesses in our community. Monona indeed is the City of Pride and it does show!

The Chamber was formed twenty years ago, thanks to a group of forward thinking business people and community leaders. Their vision of what the City of Monona and its business community could accomplish is evident today.

Monona is unique land locked community, and as such we can only redevelop existing properties. A prime example of such redevelopment is the new UW and Meriter Health Clinics. There are a number of other projects on the drawing board which will add services, jobs, new businesses and added tax base to our community. All of this adds to the already great quality of life, and community pride in the environmentally beautiful City of Monona. We have a Bobette Handel vibrant business community, great schools, a beautiful lake, and tremendous parks.

In the years to come with the continued redevelopment of Monona Drive the Chamber will continue to do all it can to assist in making the construction work go as smoothly as possible. We have seen that in action this last year with the completion of phase one of Monona Drive.

I consider it a high privilege and honor to have been able to serve as the Monona Chamber of Commerce President in 2010. Chamber Programs and Ser vices Annual Holiday Food Drive The annual holiday food drive provides turkey dinners to needy families in our area. The dinners are provided to families in November and December, through our local food pantry and via the Monona Grove High School’s holiday gift packages.

Business Seminars Business Seminars are held twice per year and are co-sponsored by Monona State Bank and Oak Park Place. These seminars provide excellent insights and strategies for our members and are available at no charge.

Guide to Monona Businesses The Business Guide is published annually and distributed to every resident and business in the community. Additional copies are available through the Chamber Office, Monona City Hall, the Library and distributed through our newcomers packages. The guide is produced locally.

ChamberCare The ChamberCare Health Insurance Program is an insurance program offered through Group Health Cooperative (GHC), Wisconsin Physicians Service (WPS) and Dean Health Care. ChamberCare focuses service in Dane County and is sold through local insurance agents to small businesses with one to 99 employees. An optional Dental Health plan is also available.

Holiday Decorating Contest The holiday decorating contest encourages businesses and residents to brighten Monona with holiday lights.

Memorial Day Parade The Annual Monona Memorial Day Parade honors all living and deceased who have or are serving our country. This event is hosted by the Monona Chamber of Commerce through the efforts of dedicated volunteers. It is sponsored entirely by contributions of time, talent and dollars from local businesses and residents.

Monona Business Watch Program The Monona Business Watch Program is endorsed by the Chamber of Commerce as a cooperative effort between the business community, chamber and police department. This independent organization creates a network of instant crime alerts, provides training, creates awareness and opens two-way communication between the business community and police department. Sting the Pins Bowling Event and Auction The Sting Auction is our yearly Monona Chamber of Commerce fundraiser. Proceeds from the Sting Auction keep your dues low. The Sting is a great opportunity to socialize with fellow members and community guests while you bid on Monona’s best products, art work, entertainment packages and services.

Ambassadors The Chamber of Ambassadors are the welcoming arm of the Monona Chamber of Commerce. They visit new businesses and answer their questions about the business community. These 20 Ambassadors are representatives of the business community, they volunteer their time to share information, welcome new businesses and provide direct member to member communication between the chamber, community and its businesses.

2010 Chamber Award Winners Golden Seagull: April Carlisle The Golden

Seagull was established for the people who had the greatest impact on the Monona Chamber this year; honoring their outstanding dedication to the Monona Community and the Chamber. April has served as a Board member, and active volunteer for the Ambassadors, Sting Auction and Memorial Day Parade committees. She has great attendance, provides input and active involvement on all projects. April is great at going out and talking to our members, getting them to understand our projects and generating support.

Chamber Member of the Year Jim Imhoff Memorial Award: Wynn Davies and Adele Bambrough introduced in memory of Jim

Imhoff Sr. the award is in tribute to his non-stop active promotion of the Chamber. Wynn is our past President, he served on the Sting Auction & Parade Committees and is a member of the Economic Development, Education and Government Relations Committee. Wynn has donated door prizes and has stepped up to MC activities for several Chamber events. Adele is also a member of the Board of Directors and the Marketing Committee. She developed the Facebook page for our Monona Drive’s Alive group and actively markets the Monona Moola program.

Community Attraction Award: Monona Park & Recreation Department and Toby Kinsler. The Community Attraction Award was

designed to bring recognition to the event or public facility that creates a draw to the Monona community. The Park & Recreation Director, Jake Anderson, has provided the community with a wide variety of programs and activities for people of all ages.

This year we have decided to award a second award to Toby Kinsler. Toby organizes an annual tennis tournament that brings players and their families into our area from a multi state area to stay in our hotels and eat at our Monona restaurants.

Business of the Year: Monona State

Bank Awarded to the Chamber business that

has contributed to community activities, provided volunteer services, or products to the Chamber of Commerce. Monona State Bank donated time and talent to our Monona Drive Marketing Committee, Sting Auction, In Business Magazine Feature, and Monona Memorial Day Parade. Their commitment to the community is strong. A prime example is the Monona Drive coupon flier. Not only did they use valuable staff time to design and visit businesses to

collect coupon participation, but they donated all the printing and postage costs. The beautiful t-shirt designs for the Memorial Day Parade this year and last came from the bank and they were the first business to sign-up for our Corporate Sponsorship program which funds Chamber events through out the year.

Holiday Food Drive: WPS Health Insur-

ance Employees This award recognizes those who have gone above and beyond to promote and/or contribute to the Holiday Food Drive.

This year the Chamber raised a record $4,756.00 providing Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets to those in need and stocking the shelves of the local food pantry. During the food drive we empty our collection containers once per month at all our locations, except WPS. At WPS we empty our collection barrels at least once per week. This year the employees decided to give cash donations as well as food items. WPS employees donated $2,535.00 to the drive, an amount that equals more than half of the total donations received.

New Buildings of the Year:

Heritage Monona Senior Campus and The Medicine Shoppe The new building of

the year is the building that has the greatest positive impact on the Monona Community. Considerations: visually pleasing, higher and better use of the property. Heritage Monona built a wonderful new community building to a location where run down over crowded apartments once stood. This campus home is a great addition to our community and a source of pride to those who live there. The Medicine Shoppe is a new building that replaced a very old and unused building. This new construction brightened up a quite corner in our community and brought a needed service to our residents.

Building Renovation of the Year:

Green Forest Restaurant This award is present-

ed to the building renovation or expansion project that has the greatest positive impact on the Monona Community. Increased visual aspect and functional use of the property are considered. The Green Forest Restaurant hoped to move across the street from their old home when Menards expanded their facility in Monona. They soon discovered that a small remodeling project had turned into a full fledge rebuilding project. Their new home is a bright and welcoming place to enjoy a warm meal.

Parks and Recreation 1011 Nichols Rd. • 608-222-4167 • www.monona.wi.us Monona has many beautiful parks, with Winnequah Park, as the largest city park. Covering 44.3 acres, it is located just east of the Winnequah Road and has a large lagoon running the entire length of the park. There are five softball diamonds and one hardball diamond in the park, along with two tennis courts, two volleyball courts, three soccer fields, and the community outdoor pool. In 1997 the Monona Youth Dream Park was constructed in Winnequah Park. This 11,500 square foot playground was built by community volunteers. Three shelters are available for rent in the community and access to the lakes is convenient via three boat launches located in Lottes Park, and via Winnequah Trail and Tonyawatha Trail. Look for our summer recreation guide for a wide variety of recreational programs for people of all ages or call the community recreation department.

Parks and Recreation Aldo Leopold Nature Center

Aldo Leopold Nature Center’s mission is to provides hands-on programs (school field trips, after school programs, summer camp, seasonal family programs, scout and home-school programs, special events and teacher training workshops) for children, their families and teachers that “... teach the student to see the land, to understand what he sees, and enjoy what he understands” in the spirit of famed ecologist Aldo Leopold. Through these programs, ALNC fosters admiration and respect for nature, encourages sustainability and stewardship of the land and provides opportunities for children to engage in healthy outdoor activities.

It is our hope that by teaching the importance of maintaining the symbiotic relationship humans have with the environment and each other, students will make the right environmental choices. This nine-hole course extends along Monona Drive from Pflaum Road on the south to Dean Avenue on the north. Community Center/Senior

The Monona Community Center was built in 1963 for the purpose of providing a functional meeting facility for the entire community. Located on Nichols Road next to Winnequah Park, it consists of two levels. The lower level houses the Senior Center and a smaller meeting room. The upper level has a lounge area, and a large hall which can accommodate up to 225 people for reception-style functions. MATC classes are held in all available space during daytime hours. Reservations can be made by calling 222-4167.

City of Monona The City of Monona operates under the laws of the State of Wisconsin as a city of the fourth class and uses a mayor-council form of government. The City Council appoints a full-time City Administrator who directs and coordinates the City’s operations and services on a day-to-day basis.

The Mayor, elected at-large for a two year term of office, together with six Alderpersons, elected at-large for two year staggered terms, comprise the Monona City Council. The Council serves as the legislative branch of City Government, enacting ordinances and resolutions, approving the annual budget, setting policies and taking other actions to guide the operations of the City. Elections are held on a non-partisan basis in April; one Alderperson is elected Council President, functioning as “acting mayor” whenever necessary.

The council regularly meets on the first and third Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Monona Library Community Media Room. All meetings are open to the general public.
