Join us as the Ontario Black History Society in partnership with our lead sponsor TD Bank hosts our 34th annual Black History Month Kick-Off to recognize the histories and achievements of Black Canadians and fund raise for our organization. Our theme this year is "Home." Date: Sunday January 30, 2022 Tickets are now on sale! Time: 4-5:30pm

This presentation takes participants around the country while focusing on the often-forgotten histories of early Black communities in Canada. Using OWTA’s trademark "edu-tainment" style (video, slam poetry, stand-up comedy, and audience participation), Tracking Black Canada will highlight the contributions and achievements made by prominent residents in these forgotten communities, while illuminating the conditions that led to their systemic demise, and how their impact is still felt today. Time: 5-6:30pm

Climate - Daniel Pauly: The Ocean's Whistleblower

Daniel Pauly is considered one of the most important scientists in the world of marine biology and wrote his first authorized biography The Ocean's Whistleblower. Daniel Pauly shares his extraordinary life and career in ocean sciences and discusses how knowledge of environmental degradation is lost over time, leading to a misguided understanding of what we have helped destroy.

A Black Girl in Love with Herself by Trey Anthony The hilarious Trey Anthony returns to Toronto for two intimate and uplifting nights of honest girl talk. Focusing on love, relationships and family, this interactive and participatory show will have you laughing and crying! Time: 8pm, tickets purchased online Venue: Harbourfront Center

How does one’s Blackness impact their ability to master digital content and storytelling or grow a grassroots organization into a sustainable business model? Being Black means you’ll navigate life differently. Whether finding creative solutions to internal differences, or battling external challenges such as overt racism, creative entrepreneurs require resiliency to see themselves through the other side. Black Perspectives - Artists Navigating Spaces

This event is an opportunity for artists and community actors to share their knowledge and lived experiences navigating cultural and institutional spaces throughout the city of Montreal. Cultural actors who have contributed to the creation of community spaces to support the flourishing of Black culture will be asked to share their journey. This event looks to focus on providing a platform for their voices and journeys to be heard. Time: 5-6:30pm

PowerUp Gospel Workshop Feb 17-19th and 24th-26th The Toronto Mass Choir is excited to offer a hybrid gospel music workshop for vocalists, instrumentalists, and gospel music enthusiasts of all skill levels. Top professionals in gospel music host workshops that give attendees a chance to improve their musicianship, learn about gospel music in a variety of settings.

Celebrations and Revelations Rashaan Rori Allwood and Yanick Allwood combine their talents to demonstrate how modern Black artists have always used music and story-telling to nurture our culture and give a voice to our people. They tell stories through the songs of some of our past and contemporary Black icons including Stevie Wonder, Mahalia Jackson, Donny Hathaway, Solage, and include their own compositions. Then they invite local elder, music producer and jazz pianist, Eddie Bullen, to share his wisdom **This event will be streamed online ALL MONTH with opening online performance on February 1, 2022 7-8:30pm

Free Film Screen| Miss Evers’ Boys

In 1932, the U.S. government began a medical program to treat black men for syphilis in the South's only black hospital. Funding was cut off soon thereafter, but money was made available to study the effects of untreated syphilis in black men to determine if blacks and whites were similarly affected by the disease. How could they allow it? And how could it go on for 40 years? Miss Evers' Boys, a powerful docudrama, examines one of modern America's most shameful episodes. Time: 7pm

In Studio Youth Event with Kezna Dalz

Join us for an Art Workshop with Montreal artist and activist Kenza Dalz! Kenza will lead both a virtual and inperson painting workshop which asks the question “what would you like to see in your heart?”. Material kits will be made available for pick-up in February. Listening to the Margins Conference

Listening to the Margins conference in Toronto, Canada will bring together a network of scholars, healthcare providers, and lived experience speakers dedicated to generating conversations and producing knowledge at the intersection of childhood disability and race in Canada.The event will feature talks by leading scholars in the field, including Dr. Sharon Smile, Dr. Carl James, Dr. Janelle Brady, and Dr. Raven Sinclair. Our Voices Speaker Series: Kim Katrin

Join us for a keynote discussion with Kim Katrin Milan on Black Queer and Trans Liberation. The discussion will follow the importance of personal and professional growth and development as a Black member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community while also touching on strategies to sustain ally relationships. A discussion of empowerment and encouragement for our attendees.

Virtual Author Visit: Lawrence Hill

Lawrence Hill will speak about his new book, Beatrice and Croc Harry, which is a meditation about forced migration, predation, danger, trust, and friendship. It gives readers reason to reflect about injustice and how to confront it, and about how perpetrators of injustice and those who have been wronged might meet again later in a place of respect and healing. For Grades 4 and up, including teens and adults of all ages. Time: 10:30am

Homegoing: Blackness and Belonging Across the Canada/US Border

"But, where are you really from?" Using the analytical insights of Black politic Debra Thompson explores the boundaries of racial belonging, considers the peculiar nuances of racism in Canada and the United States, revels in the resilience of freedom dreams that link and inspire Black people across national borders, and, ultimately asks what it means to be in a place, but not of that place. 9:30-11pm

Wellness Hour: Yoga and Meditation Brampton native, acclaimed yoga instructor Matthew Bonas hosts an Afro-inspired yoga and meditation session. Session available any time. (This session was recorded as part of the BHM events for the City of Brampton in February 2021.)

Queer Black Excellence Showcase

Join us for an evening of Queer Black Exellence featuring a variety of perfromances from Queer Black Canadian trailblazers. From poetry to music to drag, this is a night you won’t want to miss! • Virtually via Zoom • In-person at Lansdowne Park, Horticulture Building (subject to public health guidance). This showcase will take you on a multimedia journey through nine African diasporic dance forms featuring the modern dance styles of Jazz, Hip Hop, Step, AfroCuban, Afro-Caribbean, Salsa, Samba, Capoeira and Step. The rich visual spectacle will offer audiences an intimate storytelling experience that highlights the uniqueness of African diasporic artistic expression. *This event is on Saturday, Feb 26th at 8pm
