inery owners and wine lovers throughout Michigan are raising their glasses in celebration of the state’s burgeoning industry. In recent years, this growth has spawned road trips to designated wine trails, charming inns and festivals galore.

And with April having the distinction of being “Michigan Wine Month,” why not pack your weekend bags and take your taste buds on a wine trail excursion?

Michigan’s wine industry is prospering, much like fruitful grapes from the state’s soil. Give the productive orbs a temperate climate (the lakes help prevent extreme cold and heat), insulated soil (the snows help protect vine roots), and enough rain and — voila! — a thriving season is uncorked.

The overall industry — which contributes more than $300 million to Michigan’s economy each year — enjoys a conducive environment in which to thrive. Winery owners are becoming more marketing-savvy with enticing Web sites, special events, administrative councils and more. Sommeliers are taking a close look at everything from Cabernets to Rieslings, while tourism organizations, hoteliers and innkeepers are partnering with and promoting wineries around the state.

“In the last 10 years, the number of wineries has increased from 25 to 79, with four to five opening each year,” says Karel Bush of the

It was a tragic year for many families in our community: forecl osures and the tight job market devastated people who never imagined they would ever be homeless. Our focus in 2010has been to help 11 find stable housi ng for those who lost their homes and to help those at risk of eviction remai n in their curren t reside Additionally, SOS established a follow nces. program to assist -up care these folks for a full year to prevent future occurrences of homelessness.

This realignmen t of our programs has meant people are spend ing less time in our rotating shelter and more time accessing community resources and job opportuniti es once settled in their homes.

When Brian lost his job, he soon turned to alcohol and drugs for solace, which ultimately led to him losing his home. “I wanted to turn my life around and get things back on track but I wasn’t going to be able to do that by myself.” Brian had never been in a shelter before coming to SOS and was incredibly nervous.

He was pleasantly surprised by the overall mentality of everyone. “All the volunteers at the congregation were willing to go out of their way for us; the staff seemed to always genuinely care about how I was doing. Everyone wanted to see me succeed and they were willing to do whatever it took to help me get there.” While in the shelter Brian was able to improve his computer skills, fix his car, and find employment.

A year later, Brian has his own home and is working as an art installer for many hospitals and corporations throughout Metro Detroit.

“I’m happy to be back on my feet,” said Brian. “I feel SOS offers people an opportunity to turn their lives around but they have to be willing to take advantage of it. I was able to do that and I will never look back again.”

Jamie and Lezzlie

Jamie was an SOS volunteer long before she was an SOS client. Several years prior to coming to the shelter she volunteered her professional hair dressing services, never knowing that one day she would be seeking assistance from SOS. Jamie and her 6 month old daughter Lezzlie came into the shelter after her father’s home was foreclosed on. Within two weeks of being in the care of SOS, Jamie and Lezzlie were rehoused through the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-housing (HPRP) program. Upon being rehoused Jamie joined the Follow-Up Care program, where she continued to benefit from SOS resources and referrals. She obtained resume assistance and mock interview training, as well as continued access to the clothing closet and food pantry. Over a year later Jamie has been able to dramatically improve her situation. She has obtained a car, better employment, and is considering going back to school to become a social worker. Jamie said, “I feel stronger than I did before. I know there are going to be ups and downs, but now, more than ever I feel like I can deal with whatever comes.”
