Dearest Friends, As I write this letter, the Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro are about to commence. Since the year 1936, the tradition has been to have the torch carried from Olympia Greece to the site of that year’s games. The torch is usually carried by runners although from time to time it has been transported in other interesting ways. In 1948, the flame crossed the English Channel in a boat, and in 1952 it flew to Helsinki in an airplane. “Perhaps the most interesting method of transportation was used in 1976. The Olympic flame was converted to a radio signal that was sent from Athens via satellite to Canada, where it then triggered a laser beam that was used to relight the flame.”[1] This year’s festivities have brought about another unique occurrence. For the first time in history, the procession has come to a temporary halt as disgruntled government officials in Brazil took to the streets to protest a delayed salary payment. Amidst the chaos, one of the young protesters managed to steal the torch and extinguish it.

The Olympic torch is an apt metaphor for our holy work in transmitting and disseminating the Torah. It is wonderful when the procession flows freely without interruption, but often that is not the case. We are bombarded by geographic, technological, and internal challenges which threaten to disrupt our proud march. As the years progress, the obstacles shift and mutate, demanding a new game plan and route.

How does a Jew navigate modernity? How do we take an ancient set of rules, ideas, and ethics and use them as our guiding light through challenges which could never have been conceived of thousands of years ago?

Modernity is not a new question, it is a constant question. Every innovation, every political movement, every time a new leader arose to prominence our people were compelled to struggle with a similar question. Technological advancement alters the ways in which we communicate, socialize, work, and observe Shabbat. As the political landscape shifts, so does the question of Jewish involvement and advocacy. How many questions must be factored into the construction of a Kosher eruv which perhaps weren’t realities 50 years ago? And how many possible ingredients could end up in a drink as simple as a beer, which were never possibilities? The dynamics of family are different today as are the applications of lashon hara on social media.

This year’s educational program will center on the theme of “Religion in the Modern World.” We are the keepers of the flame, We are the ones who must bear the torch in every generation and ensure that it is not snuffed out and that it remains the one true source of light and warmth.

It is my hope that you find relevance and meaning in that which we have to offer this year.

In addition to spending several years on advanced Torah studies, she earned a BA in Psychology/Talmud (Bar-Ilan University), and Masters degrees in Jewish History (Touro College) and Creative Writing (Bar-Ilan University).

Mr. ed Miller AIPAC’s National Deputy Political Director September 17, 2016 Ed Miller began his political involvement by conducting public opinion polling during his senior year at the University of Pennsylvania and for several years thereafter in Washington, DC for candidates across the US and in Israel. During that time he wrote for many US and international publications and was also a member of the Jewish Federations of North America National Speakers Bureau, analyzing political events in the US and Israel. After graduating from the University of Virginia School of Law, he practiced corporate law at a Wall Street firm before returning to the DC area.

As AIPAC’s national deputy political director, Mr. Miller travels the country educating political activists and meeting with candidates for Federal office. During election cycles, he makes sure all candidates for Federal office are briefed on the importance of the US-Israel relationship.

Rabbi Ronnie Halibard In Partnership with ICJS December 11, 2016 In 2010, Ronnie Halibard embarked on a mission to educate adults and school students across the world in a subject that seemed to have an enormous knowledge gap: Jewish History.

Ronnie is an experienced and dynamic English-born educator with many years of experience teaching students of all ages and administrating at Jewish schools in the USA and in Israel. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Jewish Studies from the University of London, a Master’s degree in Education from Johns Hopkins University and is a licensed school teacher in Israel.

Through his teaching and tutoring, Ronnie discovered that Jewish History could be an attainable and enjoyable subject! In his experience, students tended to utterly dislike learning about “those ancient and irrelevant times”... after all, “who cares?! How is it relevant to me?”

But we do care and we should care! Knowledge of Jewish History enhances our general understanding and appreciation of all Jewish and Torah education, belief and tradition. It provides valuable context for almost everything we do. And, of course, it helps to widen one’s overall perspective of the world. See pg 17.

Rabbi Moshe Taragin December 10, 2016 Rabbi Moshe Taragin has been a Rebbe at Yeshivat Har Etzion in Gush Etzion for the past ten years. He has Semicha from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, a BA in Computer Science from Yeshiva College, and an MA in English Literature from City University. Rabbi Taragin previously taught Talmud at Columbia University, lectured in Talmud and Bible at the IBC and JSS divisions of Yeshiva University, and served as Assistant Rabbi at the Fifth Avenue Synagogue.

In addition, Rabbi Taragin currently teaches at the Stella K. Abraham Beit Midrash for Women of Yeshivat Har Etzion in Migdal Oz in Gush Etzion. He is the author of an Internet shiur entitled “Talmudic Methodology” with over 5,000 subscribers.

Rabbi Moshe Tzvi Weinberg currently teaches in Yeshiva University’s Irving I. Stone Beit Midrash Program (SBMP), where he also he serves as Mashgiach Ruchani. A graduate of Yeshiva University, Rabbi Weinberg received his semicha from Rabbi Zalman Nechemia Goldberg of Jerusalem and has also been certified by the Center for Integrated Teacher Education. Rabbi Weinberg has worked as Jewish educator for over ten years and has previously taught at the Torah Academy of Bergen County and the Moriah School, before joining the Yeshiva University faculty last fall. He has served as a guest speaker and scholar in residence in Jewish communities and college campuses across the country.

Dodi Fishman Tobin holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University, an M.A. in Bible from Bar Ilan University, a B.A. in Psychology from Barnard College, and is a graduate of the Matan Advanced Bible Program. Dr. Tobin is the Dean of Students for Bellows Eshkolot: The Matan Educators Institute for Tanakh and Jewish Studies. She is also the coordinator of the Matan Advanced Tanakh Summer Institute and director of Matan Bet Shemesh. Dr. Tobin teaches at Matan, and lectures throughout Israel and abroad. She made aliya in 1998, and resides in Beit Shemesh with her husband Marc and four children.

Dr. Tobin’s inspirational lectures combine literary analysis, classical commentary, modern scholarship and psychological insight to facilitate a rich understanding of biblical texts while underscoring their message for contemporary society.

Steven Resnicoff is a professor of law at the DePaul University College of Law and is the Director of its Center for Jewish Law & Judaic Studies (JLJS). Although JLJS provides a variety of interdisciplinary programming of special interest to the Jewish community, it focuses on combating anti-Semitism, especially on college campuses. In connection with JLJS, Resnicoff has spoken widely on how to combat the diverse threats posed by the BDS movement.

Prof. Resnicoff received his B.A. from Princeton (where he was elected to Phi Betta Kappa and named a Woodrow Wilson School Scholar) and his J.D. from Yale –and earned a rabbinic degree from the Lakewood Yeshiva. He also received ordination, yoreh yoreh yadin yadin, from the late Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, zt”zl. Resnicoff has served as past Chair of the Association of American Law Schools Section on Jewish Law, as past Chair of the Executive Board of the Jewish Law Association (an international association for the promotion of Jewish law), and past holder of DePaul’s Wicklander Chair for Business and Professional Ethics.

In addition to teaching a variety of commercial law courses, Professor Resnicoff has taught bioethics, legal ethics, and Jewish law. His scholarship often focuses not only on comparing secular and religious legal systems but also on exploring the many ways in which they interact with each other. He is the author or co-author of five books – including “Understanding Jewish Law,” published by LexisNexis and used at law schools such as Georgetown - and over fifty book chapters and articles. Raheel has made a documentary film called “Whose Sharia is it anyway?” dealing with the sharia debate in Ontario, Canada. She runs a Forum for Learning for youth to educate them about the dangers of radicalization and terrorism, and continues to write and speak about the subject. She has taught a course on Islam and Modernity at George Brown College in Toronto for the past five years titled “The Passion and Politics of Islam”.

Encounter with Modernity

By Dr. zev eleff In May 1886, Rev. Henry Pereira Mendes of Congregation Shearith Israel in New York dashed off a long letter to Chief Rabbi Nathan Adler. In thirteen pages, Mendes covered a lot, sharing a number of concerns, all somehow related to major changes in his modern scene. Unpublished and unstudied, the correspondence—hidden among the British Chief Rabbinate’s papers—is an uncanny document that reveals the Orthodox Jewish minister’s anxieties. It speaks to the Jewish people’s desire to grapple with tricky situations and Orthodox Judaism’s ability to overcome the hurdles of a changing world.

First, Mendes wondered about the character of Shabbat in the face of massive technological innovations.

The writer posited that the “increased resources of civilization suggest many questions concerning which our religious legislation is criticized either as not providing for them at all, or insufficiently.”

Mendes had in mind the “use of the railroad in the city,” or streetcars. Could observant Jews ride this concoction on Shabbat? After all, queried Mendes, “many Hebrews who are obliged to live at a distance from Synagogue, and now conscientiously object to riding either by steam-car or horse-car.” In accord with this, Mendes was reluctant to permit Shabbat streetcar use—but he struggled to figure out had animated that impulse; “It is urged,” he confessed, “that no actual labor is imposed on either guard by any Hebrew who uses the Railway.” Further, the New York clergyman asked his correspondent about the “use of electricity in private dwellings instead of gas, the use of hydraulic or steam elevators in private apartment houses.” All sKOKiesHUL.Org

told, the Orthodox Jews in New York petitioned for considerable clarity on these modern matters.

Second, Mendes wondered about the progressive bent of American religions, including Judaism. “I see the gradual and steady approach of Unitarian Christian,” he confided, “especially in the part of that section of the Jewish Community known as Radical Reformers.” Mendes’s anguish was in some respects an acknowledgement of the culture of “volunteerism” in the United States. In greater numbers than ever before, Jews and Christians exercised their right to decide how to worship and conduct rituals. Darwinism and other forces offered significant challenges to traditional faiths, leaving Mendes and other conservative religionists unsure how to respond. Here, too, Shearith Israel’s leader looked to Chief Rabbi Adler for guidance.

Thirdly and finally, Mendes understood that modern conditions allowed for greater mobility. He therefore beseeched Adler to join with the chief rabbis of Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece and Holland and “meet in London or Paris or any city agreeable, next July or August to take action.” The idea of an international conference—it never did take place— was tied to new expectations in communication. Mail traveled more swiftly across the Atlantic; cheaper forms of paper and binding inspired more varieties of Jewish newspapers and periodicals; and Jews of all stripes and nationalities felt more obliged to dialogue with one another.

Still, Mendes admitted, the core of Judaism would never change. Toward the end of his nervous jottings, he felt compelled to explain his greatest source of courage in this changing world: “Men can do no more than try to do their duty. God will do the rest.”

BDS and Its Harms

BDS campaigns on college campuses are largely a struggle for the hearts and souls of the students who will become future American decision-makers (e.g., politicians) and opinion-shapers (e.g., media leaders, academics, etc.).

A large percentage of the students have open minds about the Arab-Israeli conflict. Loud, vigorous, pervasive, and persistent anti-Israel and anti-Semitic BDS can dramatically influence their views and future conduct.

Sometime BDS resolutions are defeated on technical grounds (e.g., not a high enough percentage of students voted, the resolutions were not within the “authority” of the student government, etc.). But if the propaganda has biased students’ views, the major damage has been done; the fact that a particular resolution was not officially enacted is of limited importance. In fact, even a relatively moderate propaganda victory may enable BDS to inflict considerable harm on Israel. Why? BDS does not need to convince America to assume an anti-Israel position. All it needs to do is to nudge America to be a little less favorably disposed to Israel. The amount of American material and military support of Israel is extremely significant - and essential. If this support were only fractionally reduced, the effect, in terms of actual numbers, would be substantial.

In addition, by using classical anti-Semitic tropes and defacing Jewish religious images rather than focusing on Israel as a secular state, BDS campaigns also encourage simple, old-fashioned anti-Semitism. BDS campaigns serve as “fig leaves” behind which other anti-Semites, even those with no sincere interest whatsoever in Middle Eastern politics, are able to hide. BDS campaigns have repeatedly involved shouts and signs with messages such as “Kill the Jews,” “Death to the Jews,” “Hitler was right,” “the only problem with Hitler is that he didn’t have enough ovens,” etc. In fact, a study of anti-Semitic activity in 2015 on the campuses of over 100 colleges and universities with the largest numbers of Jewish students established that BDS was the strongest predictor of anti-Semitic conduct. (See http://www.amchainitiative.org/antisemitic-activity-schoolslarge-Jewish-report-2015). Thus, BDS tends to normalize anti-Semitic invectives and conduct throughout the culture.

BDS campaigns harm Jewish students in a variety of ways. They are often the direct victims of verbal and physical intimidation and abuse. Some are afraid to wear jewelry that is identifiable as Jewish. In addition, their educational experience is diminished. They may be afraid to take certain courses or, within a course, to express their SKOKIESHUL.ORG

opinions, lest they be pilloried or ostracized by their classmates – or by their professors. (In fact, to the extent that these opinions are not expressed, the educational experience of all students is impaired). The eligibility of some students to serve on student government has been questioned because they are Jewish and, therefore, “biased.” Similar accusations have been made about students who have traveled to Israel on a “Birthright program.”

In addition to diminishing Jewish students’ welfare in these ways, BDS campaigns can cause a deeper, spiritual harm. Some Jewish students who do not know better – or who are affected by “Festinger’s cognitive dissonance” – may actually decide to alter their pro-Israel views and adopt antiIsrael and anti-Semitic views. Why? Festinger theorized that if a person is forced to do something that the person does not want to do, e.g., because it is immoral, this will cause the person considerable mental distress and will seek relief from this distress. If the person cannot control his or her conduct, then the person’s only option is to change the opinion. Thus, to experience from the mental relief, the person will alter his or her opinion that the conduct is immoral.

Many Jewish students are involved in many different “progressive” campaigns on campus. But BDS supporters, who are often far more numerous than Jewish students on campus, often infiltrate other movements, such as “Black Lives Matter” (See the March-April 2016 of Moment magazine, which contains an important article written by Anna Isaacs, entitled, “How The Black Lives Matter and Palestinian Movements Converged.”) These BDS supporters, and some other, promote the concept of “intersectionality,” which largely views the world as being divided between white oppressors and oppressed people of color. March 26, 2017 ivory tower terror Definition: The two most frighteningly prodigious and pernicious forces facing the world, and especially the Jewish community, are Radical Islamic terrorism and the resurgence of global Anti-Semitism. The latter has reached levels not seen in the post-World War II era. While many factors contribute to the “new” anti-Semitism’s unrelenting and pervasive power, Islamic Anti-Semitism appears to be its driving force. Seismic changes are occurring throughout the world, threatening a tsunami that could even overwhelm America’s bulwarks. Existentially significant struggles for the hearts and minds of America’s future decision-makers and opinion-shapers are already taking place on college campuses throughout the country.

Ivory Tower Terror addresses both of these terrible phenomena: first, the furious brutality of Radical Islam and then the increasingly fearsome potency of Islamic Anti-Semitism.

are not even to be allowed to participate in progressive campaigns on behalf of the oppressed. Consequently, not only do these Jewish students suffer from being called “babykillers” and “racist supporters of an Apartheid State,” they are told that they are the enemies of the many progressive campaigns on campus. To alleviate the mental pressure this can create, they may choose to change their minds about the Arab-Israeli conflict. In this way, they can gain the good will of other progressive students and faculty. But changing their minds about the Arab-Israeli conflict can also mean alienation from the main corpus of the Jewish people.

Other aspects of BDS raise still additional problems.

For instance, academic boycotts can fundamentally imbalance what generations of children and young adults are taught. Excluding pro-Israel voices from college classrooms will not only affect what the students in those classrooms learn. Often college centers or institutes prepare textbooks and supplementary materials that are used in K-12 education. In Newton, Massachusetts, a public high school used materials contained untrue and highly inflammatory anti-Israel assertions. Those materials had been created by a college center led by someone with an anti-Israel bias. Preventing pro-Israel scholars from being named to sKOKiesHUL.Org

the boards of academic journals or from serving as peer reviewers of submitted papers will bias the treasury of published academic literature.

There are important ways in which legal skills and the legal process may be used to combat BDS. (See my article, “Using Legal Skills to Combat Anti-Semitism and Terrorism,” in the December 2015 edition of the JLJS newsletter.) These steps include, for example, the proactive use of litigative skills under various federal and state statutes and university administrative policies and processes, the defensive use of litigative skills, and the drafting and promotion of additional federal and state laws as well as improved campus regulations (particularly those dealing with persons responsible for disruptions of programming and anti-Semitic conduct). Perhaps a close evaluation of these various mechanisms would be a good topic for a follow-up article. this article excerpt is from one of our guest speaker KCt talks. Join the Israel JCC for a special Yom Ha’atzmaut screening Mekonen: The Journey of an African Jew April 30, 2017 @ 8 PM Mekonen: The Journey of an African Jew is the new mini-documentary from the creators of Netflix-featured Beneath the Helmet and PBSfeatured Israel Inside. The film follows the backstory and personal journey of Mekonen Abebe, a young African-Israeli Jew, once a young shepherd in Africa and now a commander in the Israeli Defense Forces. Mekonen is one of many brave young men and women drafted into compulsory service in the IDF, to defend their homeland and the liberal values of democracy, freedom and equality.

Born and raised in an Ethiopian village, Mekonen was a 12-year-old shepherd when his father died suddenly, less than a day before his family was to move to Israel. The film accompanies Mekonen back to Africa on an emotional journey. He explores his roots, makes peace with his past and embraces his future in Israel.

After a difficult adjustment period in Israel, Mekonen was fortunate to attend the Hodayot High School, which educates children from troubled backgrounds and helps integrate them into Israeli society. Mekonen became a decorated officer in the IDF, while staying true to his Ethiopian roots and culture.

Mekonen is an uplifting and inspiring film that will move audiences and show viewers that anything is possible with the right attitude, tools and support.

Aftermath Tuesday August 1, 2017, Tisha Baav Franek and Jozek Kalina, sons of a poor farmer, are brothers from a small village in central Poland. Franek immigrated to the United States in the 80’s, and cut all ties with his family. Only when Jozek’s wife arrives in the US, without explanation, does Franek finally return to his homeland.

Franek discovers that Jozek has been ostracized from the community, and constantly receives various threats. As Franek and Jozek struggle to rebuild their relationship, they are drawn into a gothic tale of intrigue.

The two brothers eventually uncover a dark secret that forces them to confront the history of their family and their hometown.

Upon its release in Poland, Aftermath received acclaim and also generated intense controversy. Polish nationals have accused the film of being antiPolish propaganda, as well as a distortion of a sensitive piece of Polish history, leading the film to be banned in some Polish cinemas.
