Following the ceremony, Kelsey and Tom took pictures underneath the Four Points chairlift with photographer Hillary Moore.

“The colors, the chairlift and the mountains in the background truly captured the setting of our wedding day,” says Kelsey. “And the short hike in heels down to the spot where we did our first look really made it feel like a Steamboat wedding.”

For a modern take on the traditional guest book, names were signed along the branches of the aspen trees. Kelsey and Tom framed the picture and it now hangs in their home to remind them of their wedding day. 10 | Steamboat Wedding Day 2024

The bridal party took pictures at the top of Tornado, Nelson’s Run and Twister before guests arrived for the ceremony. Florist Ashley Noone provided a combination of dried florals and live flowers for the bouquets and boutonnieres.

The newlyweds opted for a sweetheart table at the reception. “It gave us some time to chat about the whirlwind of a day so far,” says Kelsey. Passed appetizers included avocado toast points and bourbon glazed bison meatballs. Entree choices were grilled beef flatiron, roasted airline chicken breast, seared ruby trout or wild mushroom pasta.

Mike and Jessica were planning a joint bachelor and bachelorette weekend when they decided to turn the whole thing into their actual wedding weekend. The ceremony at Yampa River Botanic Park and reception at Aurum was preceeded by two nights of fun with family and friends.

12 | Steamboat Wedding Day 2024

For the first night, the couple rented Sky Valley Chateau on Rabbit Ears Pass. The al fresco dinner vibe was complete with signature drinks, flower arrangements and food from Wilder Bean Provisions.

Night two was themed “Western chic” on the back patio of Taco Cabo. Mike’s twin brother, Kyle Diener, was the best man.

Jessica and Mike exchanged vows at Yampa River Botanic Park. Their ceremony was followed by a reception at Aurum and dancing at Old Town Pub.

The VW van has been a part of Katie and Cody’s history from the beginning. “On our second date, Cody picked me up in the van and it broke down,” Katie says. “I called a tow truck and he said that was the moment when he knew I was the one.” Since then, the couple has spent endless time adventuring in the van; to make it a part of their wedding, they turned it into a photo booth.

Golden retreiver Bentley was the ring bearer. “We got him when he was eight weeks old,” says Katie. “He is the best buddy and we couldn’t imagine this moment without him.”

14 | Steamboat Wedding Day 2024

www.SteamboatWeddingDay.com | 15

Wedding album Katie and Cody incorporated a time capsule into their wedding. “It symbolizes that marriage is like an empty box and takes effort to fill and keep full,” Katie explains. “We put in meaningful items that reminded us of our love. A marriage can be difficult and if there comes a day when we need support, we can open this box and remind ourselves of our love for each other and our wedding day.”

16 | Steamboat Wedding Day 2024

The couple danced to “Who I Am” by Wade Bowen for their first dance. “One of our favorite hobbies is going country dancing so this was natural for us,” Katie says.

“Tequila was a must for me!” Katie says. Upon entering the reception area, guests were greeted with a tequila shot next to the seating chart.

Fall in Steamboat offers some of the most scenic hikes.

A Vacation for

Every Season N

FALL Fall is filled with fiery colors of red, orange and yellow; take a hike for the ultimate viewing pleasure. Try Blackmere Trail, a scenic hike that’s a short drive from downtown Steamboat Springs. After walking up the trail about two miles, stop and enjoy the view of Mount Werner and the entirety of Steamboat glowing with the foliage. Or, head up Spring Creek Trail, which is hikeable for all ages. On the east side of town, Rabbit Ears Pass offers many scenic trails such as the Rabbit Ears Peak Trail. 18 | Steamboat Wedding Day 2024

WINTER Steamboat is world-renowned for its winter sports. Hit the mountain with your guests to ski or snowboard for a day. Or take a snowshoe excursion across a pristine winter wonderland on Fox Curve trail up Rabbit Ears Pass. Several local companies offer guided snowmobile tours, or head over to Howelsen Hill for tubing fun. SPRING While spring in Steamboat means mud, it also means fewer crowds. Stroll through downtown, stopping in shops, museums and galleries. Recharge with lunch at Yampa Valley Kitchen or a cocktail on the river at Aurum. Guests will love a long soak in the warm waters

SUMMER Organize a mountain biking excursion on one of Routt County’s many trails, such as Bluffs Loop or Howelsen Meadows. For lakeside fun, rent paddleboards for the day and head out to Stagecoach Lake. Stroll through the Farmers Market on summer Saturdays and explore homemade goods, locally grown produce and more. It doesn’t get more Western than the rodeo, so if you have a free evening, plan a night at the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series, held every Friday and Saturday evenings in the summer. Whatever the season, your guests will leave feeling like they’ve had a whirlwind vacation. Steer wrestling at the rodeo.

WHAT TO PACK Mountain weather is known for its unpredictability – rain, sunshine, sleet, hail, freezing winds and balmy breezes are just a few of the weather conditions in Steamboat Springs on any given day. Layers are key. In summer, pack a light jacket, raincoat, sweaters, jeans and t-shirts to make the transition between temperatures easy. For a winter wedding, bring warm snow boots and a thick winter coat. If outdoor excursions are on the itinerary, toss in good gym shoes with deep tread that will make hiking through mud, snow and gravel seem like a walk in the park. 24 | Steamboat Wedding Day 2024

few tips and tricks to provide a seamless experience from what to bring, to how to get here, and how to make the high altitude manageable.

For weddings at Four Point Lodge, guests take the gondola to the top of Thunderhead Peak, then transfer to a shuttle. Even on a sunny day, come prepared for whatever the forecast throws your way. As they say in Colorado, “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes.”

Be prepared whether walking downtown or hiking on a trail – stay hydrated, bring layers and wear sunscreen.

26 | Steamboat Wedding Day 2024

HOW TO GET HERE Yampa Valley Regional Airport is the closest airport to Steamboat Springs. Just 30 minutes from town, United Airlines offers direct flights daily from Denver; during ski season direct flights arrive from 16 major cities across the United States on a variety of airlines. Upon arrival, rent a car or use a local car service like Steamboat Express to get into town. Denver International Airport is also an option. After landing in Denver, rent a car and drive about three hours through the mountains to get to Steamboat. If you’re not familiar with driving in mountainous terrain — especially in the winter – book a shared or private ride via Steamboat Express, which shuttles between DIA and Steamboat. WHERE TO GET YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE The Routt County Clerk and Recorder’s Office issues marriage licenses by appointment. Call to schedule an appointment anytime between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday-Friday. The fee is

$30 plus $1.25 per certified copy. Cash, checks or credit cards are accepted. Make sure to bring identification and the transaction number from the submittal of the marriage application online. The office is located in the Routt County courthouse in downtown Steamboat (522 Lincoln Ave., Suite 21). HIGH-ALTITUDE TIPS Being situated at an elevation of 6,867 feet, Steamboat is exposed to the elements. Because of that, be sure to lather up with sunscreen every morning – even in the winter and on cloudy days. To increase sun protection further, always have a hat and sunglasses on hand. Along with being shaded from the sun, staying hydrated is essential – making an effort to drink one to 1.5 liters of water per day helps. Pack lotion and chapstick to protect your skin from getting dry. And, take it slow – if you feel signs of altitude sickness (headache, nausea, dizziness), stop and rest.

Getting to Steamboat • The drive from Denver International Airport takes about 3 1/2 hours. • Yampa Valley Regional Airport, 25 miles from Steamboat, offers direct flights during ski season to 16 locations across the country on six major airlines. Summer service is growing rapidly, too. • Shuttle services run daily from DIA, or go by limo, car service or rental car.

ZACH TAYLOR

• Bus service within the city is free. Lodges offer shuttles, and taxis are available.

Sustainable Wedding

Print invitations on seed paper for guests to plant.

E

mbrace environmentally conscious wedding planning with these eco-friendly ideas. From digital invitations to second-hand wedding dresses, reduce your ecological footprint while creating a memorable celebration that’s kind to both Steamboat Springs and the planet.

1. Go digital. Many websites allow couples to create custom digital save-the-date and

wedding invitations, saving time, stress and money required to print and mail paper invitations. Designing a custom wedding website complete with links for RSVPs and gift registries is also an eco-friendly option. Still want to send physical invitations? Consider printing them on seed paper, which will sprout into flowers when planted. www.SteamboatWeddingDay.com | 29

Avoid plastic waste by renting dishes and utensils for the reception.

Choosing local vendors for things like flowers and catering helps reduce the carbon footprint of having items delivered up to the mountains.

2. Choose a sustainable or pre-loved

wedding dress. Many wedding dress designers can create stunning gowns using sustainable materials and methods of production. Secondhand dresses can also be found on websites like Etsy and Nearly Newlywed.

3. Rent dishes and utensils to avoid

plastics. While single-use plastics may seem like less of a hassle, using them can produce a significant amount of unnecessary waste. Create a custom stainless steel pint glass for each guest to use at the reception and take home as a wedding favor.

4. Opt for a local florist and caterer.

Choosing local not only contributes to Steamboat’s economy, it also cuts down on the carbon footprint that comes from having flowers and food shipped to Routt County. Try Wild Hare Floral Company or Local Flavor Catering to round out the reception. 30 | Steamboat Wedding Day 2024

they certainly add an extra layer of beauty to end-of-ceremony photos, they can be tough to clean up and aren’t environmentally friendly, especially if the ceremony is outdoors. Instead, create individual bags for guests that are filled with compostable rose petals, dried flowers, feathers or even bubbles.

PARTY ITINERARIES

E

njoy a pre-wedding weekend of fun with your bridal party in Steamboat Springs. From handcrafted cocktails to outdoor activities and rejuvenating spa days, there is always something to do in Steamboat.

FOR WINTER

Friday Once you’ve arrived and settled into your accommodations, head downtown for dinner and drinks. Try Bésame, where the group can share small plates like shishito peppers, duck wings and soup dumplings. Don’t miss the killer cocktails – the Tipsy Carrot is a local favorite. Want to keep the party going? Walk across the street to Schmiggity’s, which often has live music, or even better, karaoke. 32 | Steamboat Wedding Day 2024

Saturday Ski day! If you didn’t bring your own gear, there are a number of rental spots at the base of the mountain that can outfit the group. Check out the new Wild Blue gondola – the longest in North America – which whisks skiers and riders from the base to the top in just 13 minutes. When you’re ready for a break, grab a Bloody Mary at Four Points Lodge. Save room for a Steamboat après: before you unclip your boots, ski down to T Bar for a dose of Steamboat’s classic après scene. Hot food (try the Swiss rõsti) and cold beer will revive you for another night out. But, if you need more rejuvenation, plan a trip to the spa. Waterside Day Spa offers nail services, massage therapy and a salt room.

The average summertime temperature in Steamboat is mid-70s to low 80s, with occasional hot spells, making it a pleasant time to enjoy cool drinks outdoors with friends.

Sunday Rehash the weekend over brunch before you leave town. Get cozy in The Shack Cafe, a no-frills spot with a large menu. Perk up with a coffee for the road. The Common Grouse recently opened in The Commons Food Hall and serves up frothy lattes, eye-opening espresso and more.

Later on, rent a lane at Snow Bowl and get ready for some bowling fun. A full bar (and a full menu) allows for dinner, drinks and entertainment all at once. Need a night cap? Swing by Storm Peak Brewing Company, down the street, for a flight of local beer.

Get a workout in or sign up for a yoga class, followed by a soothing soak at the Old Town Hot Springs.

FOR SUMMER

Friday Stretch your legs after a day of travel with a pub crawl and make it Steamboat-style: on a bike! Happy hour generally starts around 4 p.m. so get moving with rental bikes and travel from bar to pub to restaurant in style. A few stops for your consideration: Table 79 for the crispy Brussels sprouts and portobello fries paired with a round of French 75s; Laundry Kitchen & Cocktails for a glass of wine (the price during happy hour from 4:30-5:30 p.m. is based on the time, so go early!); Backdoor Grill for juicy burgers and local beer; Mambo for plates of pasta paired with Aperol spritzes. Saturday Shake off the night before with a workout. Get day passes to Old Town Hot Springs, located in downtown Steamboat. Hit the gym or take a workout class (check the schedule online at www.oldtownhotsprings.org), then soak in the healing waters of the Heart Spring and other pools. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head downtown and pick up sandwiches from Yampa Sandwich Company to eat by the river. Then, browse the shops and galleries on Lincoln Avenue. F.M. Light & Sons is a must for Western wear; Kali’s Boutique offers an eclectic collection of women’s clothing; the Jace Romick Gallery showcases Western art and culture, and Pine Moon Fine Art is a collective of several local artists who work in various mediums. As the sun starts to sink behind Mount Werner, head to Primrose for dinner and drinks. A round of Lockhart martinis (named after local legend Cookie Lockhart) is in order for any celebration. When you’ve had your fill of oysters, beef tartare and handmade pasta, check and see what’s going on downtown. Fridays and Saturdays are rodeo nights, you might catch a free concert at the base of Howelsen Hill, or jam to live music at an outdoor bar. Sunday Early risers get the trails to themselves. Take one last hike in the mountains or stroll on the Yampa River Core Trail before you hit the road. Also a must-have for a travel day: a cinnamon roll from Winona’s. Get there early because once they’re gone for the day, they’re gone.

fter months of planning, you and your future spouse have gathered all of your friends and family in a beautiful, remote part of Northwest Colorado, and the photographer, caterer, florist and wedding planner are all ready. There’s nothing left to do but sit back and enjoy your last few days as a bachelor in the company of your groomsmen. While Steamboat Springs happens to be quite the athlete’s paradise, we take our relaxation just as seriously as our play – that’s why we have a number of world-class spas and wellness services for your wedding party to enjoy. While brides often claim first dibs on spas, the truth is the groom and his men will feel right at home as well. Located at the base of the resort at both the Steamboat Grand and The Sheraton, Rocky Mountain Day Spa offers a ‘Mountain Man’ 90-minute deep tissue massage as well as a 60-minute gentleman’s facial, allowing you to relax and unwind in style. Need a trim before the ceremony? Steamboat Barbershop can hook you up with everything from straight razor hot shaves and beard care to skin fades and charcoal masks. Replenish IV Therapies, located downtown on Lincoln Avenue, offers IV Therapies, vitamin injections and an oxygen bar to give you and your party the boost you need to get over altitude sickness or a big night of celebrating. After a morning of deep relaxation, consider closing out your day with a challenging game of golf at one of Steamboat’s three distinctive golf courses, Steamboat Golf Club, Rolling Stone Ranch Golf Course and Haymaker Golf Course. If you happen to be in town during ski season, don’t worry – Haymaker has a new state-of-the-art indoor golf simulator for up to five players. Embrace the serenity of the mountains, indulge in a little pampering, and create lasting memories with your closest friends before what will most likely be one of the most significant days in your life. 36 | Steamboat Wedding Day 2024

Founded by three Colorado natives inspired by skiing and adventure, Mythology has recently established a Steamboat campus. Its liquor is distilled and stored mere miles away from any dream wedding location in the Yampa Valley.
