CLEANSING

An essential step in every routine, here are your common cleansing questions, answered…

Do I need to cleanse in the morning?

This is one of our most frequently asked questions, and to quote our Founder, Caroline Hirons: 'taking care of your skin in the morning is no different than having a shower before you put clean knickers on.' A morning cleanse prepares your skin for the rest of your routine, but more importantly, it removes excess oil and sweat that can accumulate overnight and cleanses the skin of bacteria and dust (and dust mites!) transferred from your bedding – a recipe for breakouts. We recommend using a gentle, conditioning formula in the AM such as a nourishing cream, milk or oil-based gel cleanser.

Can I wash my face in the shower?

We get it; mornings can often be a rush, and it can be tempting to kill two birds with one stone and wash your face in the shower. However, generally speaking, most of us prefer a water temperature which is too hot to be suitable for the face and will exacerbate skin barrier issues, redness and dehydration. For this reason, we recommend cleansing at the sink after your shower using lukewarm water. If you really need to wash your face in the shower, please make sure you turn the heat down!

Perfect for your first and second cleanse.

What is double cleansing, and do I have to do it if I haven’t worn makeup?

Double cleansing means to cleanse twice using either the same or two different cleansers in your PM routine. The purpose of the first is to remove makeup, sunscreen, oil and grime from the day, and the second is to cleanse the skin thoroughly. You do not need to double cleanse in the morning and only need to do so at night if you have been wearing makeup and/or SPF. Yes, you still need to double cleanse if you have only worn sunscreen. Sunscreen is designed to stay on the face, so you need to take the time to remove it properly.

Pair your micellar water with The Cotton Rounds!

Can I use micellar water for my first cleanse at night?

Micellar water is a convenient option for makeup removal, but it should always be followed by a wash-off cleanser for your second cleanse.

Why does my skin feel tight after cleansing?

This is a sign that your skin has been stripped of its natural oils, indicating that the cleanser you're using might not be suitable for you. Opt for a more nourishing formula instead. Your skin should feel fresh and balanced after cleansing, not tight or squeaky clean. Save that for dishes!

Do I need to use a flannel, and how often should I wash it?

Using a flannel may not be 'essential', but for us here at Skin Rocks, it may as well be. Flannels are a brilliant way to thoroughly clean

YOUR SKIN LIKE A PRO HOW TO HYDRATE

Summer is the season of juicy, plump and hydrated skin, but hot weather and long days in the sun can leave the skin parched. Here’s exactly how to nail your hydration

Step 1: Use a gentle conditioning cleanser

Steer clear of harsh cleansers which can strip your skin of its natural oils – vital for retaining hydration in the skin – and opt for gentle, conditioning formulas. Be mindful when double cleansing to remove SPF and makeup too, particularly if you use a foaming or exfoliating gel. We recommend choosing a balm, oil, or cream as your first cleanse, and either using it twice or following up with a gel, depending on your skin type and concerns.

Step 2: Incorporate an essence

Hydrating essences are often overlooked but are a gamechanging step when it comes to hydration. These liquids are gaining more attention thanks to the rise of K-Beauty, and for good reason. Not only do they help to hydrate the skin, they also aid the absorption of products applied afterwards. On exfoliation nights you can also incorporate an AHA or PHA toner. These acids have humectant properties, meaning they attract and retain water; priming the skin to soak up the hydration from the rest of your routine.

Step 4: Lock it all in

Step 3: Treat yourself

Treatment serums can be a great way to hydrate thirsty skin. Look out for formulas that contain ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, polyglutamic acid, amino acids, squalane and ceramides. Many of your favourite serums will include at least one of these ingredients anyway, so you can skip this step if you want to keep your routine simple. However, for those needing a little extra help, a dedicated hydrating serum can work wonders!

Now that you’ve added hydration to your skin, you need to keep it there; otherwise, it will simply evaporate from the surface. Moisturisers are designed to seal in hydration, as they help to strengthen the lipid barrier on the surface of your skin, preventing water from escaping (lipids dislike water, therefore water molecules will not cross this barrier). A whipped texture is a great all-rounder for every skin type and is perfect if you wish to keep it light in the summer heat. Alternatively, you can opt for a gelcream if you are particularly oily and/or breakout-prone.

Step 5: Carry a mist

A mist can help top up your hydration on-the-go. Mists formulated with humectants such as glycerin and ceramides are ideal, providing an instant dewy glow and replenishing your skin if it starts to feel dehydrated during the day.

IN-FLIGHT SKINCARE

Between growing up in the UK and the US and the constant travel in my corporate years, I’ve been taking long-haul flights for decades – and by now, I feel like I’ve managed to get my travel skincare down to a finely tuned art form. Here’s my advice…

The night before I’d recommend loading up your skin with as much hydration as possible before you step into a windowless metal tube circulating the same air for hours. You can stick to business as usual with your preferred cleanser, but if you can, try to switch up your routine with a hydrating mask and serum.

For your serum selection, I’ve been a long-time fan Medik8 Hydr8 B5 Intense. It delivers hydration at different molecular weights and even comes in a travel size, so you can slip it straight into your toiletries bag (a Kit Bag, of course) once you’ve used it.

A mask like Pai Resurrection Girl is a great pick – deeply moisturising with a rich, silky texture and it’s not going to break the bank. If you want to wake up dewy and good-to-glow, this has you covered.

During the flight

My absolute essentials to take on a plane are…

1. Hand sanitiser and cleansing wipes (only for my hands, never the face), because no in-flight skincare is going to be worth it if you don’t have clean hands.

2. Believe it or not, a little hand cream dabbed inside your nostrils is also a good way to stave off the dreaded post-plane lurgy. Nursem Caring Hand Cream is perfect – you only need a tiny amount and it’s a real skin soother.

3. When dryness hits, my lips are always the first to show it, so a hydrating lip balm is a pocket-size must-have when I fly. Eucerin Acute Lip Balm is a brilliant choice for instantly soothing hydration.

4. My eyes will also often start to dry out, and a cream like Sunday Riley Auto Correct Eye Cream is a lifesaver at keeping my under-eyes bright and re-energised, so I don’t emerge at my destination looking halfawake (just feeling it instead).

5. A moisturising mist is also one of the quickest ways to get some immediate refreshing relief. One of my favourite products in the world, Josh Rosebrook Hydrating Accelerator, actually comes in a travel-size and provides instant hydration in a bottle – it’s basically got a permanent place in my bag all year round.

6. I always like to include The Support Oil as an extra dry skin saviour in my travel kit. We called it a ‘fire extinguisher for your skin’ for a reason as it immediately soothes, calms and helps to reduce the appearance of redness.

When you land

Once you’ve arrived, try not to fall asleep straight away! I promise that by taking just a few minutes to give your face a good cleanse and apply your moisturiser, you’ll thank yourself for it the next morning. For an extra boost of hydration, Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask is a fantastic pick-me-up, and you don’t even need to bother taking it off before you (finally) collapse into bed.

ANTIOXIDANTS

A common buzzword in the world of skincare, antioxidants are an important part of every skincare routine. But what do they actually do?

What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are ingredients that work to counteract the damage caused by free radicals, which result from excess oxidation within the skin.

What are free radicals?

Exposure to environmental aggressors such as UV rays, pollution and cigarette smoke will increase oxidisation and the subsequent production of free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules with unpaired electrons (throwback to GCSE chemistry). They are constantly searching for a spare electron to complete their set, which they can take from your cells, damaging them in the process and resulting in premature ageing – this is known as oxidative stress.

How do antioxidants work?

Antioxidants give up one of their own electrons to stabilise the free radical, preventing it from stealing the electron from your cells and damaging them. This helps to boost the skin’s natural defences and restores the balance between oxidants and antioxidants to help prevent oxidative stress.

The damage caused by free radicals can result in dull, uneven, lacklustre skin and accelerated ageing. Since antioxidants help to prevent this damage, they help to promote a brighter, healthier complexion and improve the overall appearance of the skin whilst reducing signs of ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles.

When should you use antioxidants?

Antioxidants can be used every day, morning and/or evening. However, for optimal effectiveness, we recommend using your antioxidant product in the morning, as your skin will benefit most from the protection during the day (when paired with sunscreen, of course).

Antioxidant ingredients to look out for:

• Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and its derivatives – specifically newer more sophisticated variants such as tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate

• Green Tea Extract

• Resveratrol

• Coenzyme Q10

DIA DUIT, IRELAND!

May saw us expand our retail presence in Ireland as we launched Skin Rocks counters in the iconic Brown Thomas and Arnotts.

Caroline’s first work trip to Ireland was back in 2001, so it was a dream come true to cross the Irish Sea and make it our second home ten years later. To do that in one of the country’s leading department stores was just the cherry on top.

To celebrate, Caroline and the team headed to Dublin and Cork to host a series of meet-and-greets, intimate events and in-store book signings at select stores.

We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who came out to see us during our visit. If you were one of them, we hope you had a great time and we can’t wait to come back.

Happy Skin Rocks shopping, Ireland!

What are peptides?

PEPTIDES INGREDIENT SPOTLIGHT

Over the past couple of years, peptides have quickly become power players in skincare, but what’s so great about these mighty molecules?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids naturally present in the skin and are essential for the synthesis of proteins such as collagen, elastin and keratin. There are various types of peptides used in skincare, and each can boast different benefits. For example, tridecapeptide-1 is great at reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, acetyl tetrapeptide-28 helps to target hyperpigmentation and amplify antioxidant activity, and then there’s sh-polypeptide-121, a bioengineered collagen-identical peptide which has skin-soothing benefits. You even have oligopeptide-10, which is often used in products for breakout-prone skin, as it boosts the efficacy of salicylic acid. However, generally speaking, most peptides are used for their skin-plumping and anti-ageing benefits.

How do peptides work?

Peptides exist naturally in our skin as the building blocks for proteins such as collagen, elastin and keratin. As we ageand through environmental damage - levels of these proteins deplete, which can lead to laxity, texture, fine lines and wrinkles. Adding additional peptides to your skin through topical products can help to stimulate the synthesis of these naturally occurring proteins, helping to keep your skin firm, plump and smooth.

Some proteins, such as collagen, are too large to be absorbed by the skin, so applying them topically has little to no benefit. This is where peptides come in handy, as applying peptides topically triggers the production of said proteins and mitigates the absorption issue.

What are the benefits of peptides in skincare?

Peptides can help to plump and firm the skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin texture. One of their main benefits, which is likely responsible for the recent rise of peptides, is their ability to help strengthen the skin barrier. Some peptides have also been shown to have skin-soothing properties, helping to reduce redness and irritation, whilst others have been shown to help with hyperpigmentation.

Over recent years, technological advancements have allowed for the development of more complex peptide technologies, which were previously very hard to make. These newer types of peptides are more powerful yet even more gentle on the skin and will soon become more commonplace in skincare formulas.

How to use peptides in your routine:

Look at peptides as a support act in skincare; when they are combined with antioxidants and skin conditioners, these products can have significant ‘anti-ageing’ benefits. If you are an experienced skincare user with deeper wrinkles, we would recommend using a retinoid product in conjunction with your peptide product. However, if you are only just starting to notice the first signs of fine lines, focus on hydration-boosting products and peptide-based skincare as your first port of call.

LED THERAPY ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT

Let's start with the basics. What is LED therapy?

LED (light emitting diode) therapy uses light in close proximity to the skin to help regenerate skin and reduce inflammation. Originally developed by NASA in the 1990s, it can take the form of specialised clinical machinery or, with increasing frequency, at-home masks. You know the ones – the Hannibal Lecter-esque contraptions filled with tiny lightbulbs. They might look odd, but they’re the real deal, helping to reduce redness, fine lines and breakouts.

How does it work?

‘Wait, Caroline, you’re always telling us to never be in direct light without SPF’. You’re spot on, but this light is different. Sun rays are composed of ultraviolet light radiation, which actively damages collagen and causes it to break down. LED light is absorbed by your skin, transferring energy to your cells’ mitochondria and stimulating them to produce collagen.

What are the different kinds of LED wavelengths?

Different LED colours can penetrate your skin at various depths, so many LED therapies will use multiple wavelengths for the best possible results. Blue and red light wavelengths are the two you’re most likely to experience, but some treatments will include everything from green to purple light.

Blue light has the shortest wavelength, which means it’s most effective at handling skin issues near the surface of the epidermis. It regulates oil production, while its antibacterial properties help kill the bacteria that cause acne, helping to prevent breakouts.

Red light is responsible for the classic benefits of LED therapy. It reduces inflammation, increases hydration, and stimulates collagen and elastin production.

Where can I get LED therapy?

The good news is that it's easily accessible. In the past five years, there’s been a real boom in the popularity of LED, and you’re likely to find it available at a facialist near you. I first fell in love with LED therapy at Teresa Tarmey’s clinic, and for me, nothing beats an inperson treatment.

If a clinic visit doesn’t fit into your schedule, many brands now offer their own at-home masks, which are an incredibly convenient way of working an LED treatment into your schedule. My personal recommendations are Dr Dennis CurrentBody and Dermalux Flex

If I’m using an at-home mask, when should I include it in my routine?

Instructions for home-LED masks vary—some are used daily, some every three days; some stay on for three minutes, others for twenty. However, in general they should consistently be applied after cleansing but before any other products.

Which skin conditions can benefit from LED therapy?

Because of its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to kill bacteria, I would recommend LED therapy as a fantastic treatment for people suffering from regular breakouts, acne, redness, dullness, fine lines or similar signs of ageing, and dry, flaky skin.

Is there anyone who should avoid LED therapy?

Avoid LED if you suffer from epilepsy, seizures and any kind of photosensitive skin condition, or if you’re taking medication that increases your skin’s photosensitivity. I’d also advise speaking to a dermatologist before use if you have melasma or hyperpigmentation, as these can sometimes be aggravated by LED.

Let's be honest. We've all got our dream holidays mapped out. That ideal trip we fantasise about when we're sitting at our desks, washing up, daydreaming over coffee… or, for our Founder, Caroline Hirons, handling all things Skin Rocks. We sat down with her to discuss where she'd jet off to on her ideal summer vacation, and (of course) what beauty products she’s packing.

OK Caroline, where are you headed for your dream holiday?

I’m hopping straight on the plane to Italy with Jim, and we’d start in Venice because… obviously, it's Venice! Nothing beats a lazy drift along the canal on a gondola or popping into a little hidden bar to grab some cicchetti

Then, I'd head down to Florence, where I'd hit up some of the amazing vintage shops while Jim heads off to explore a few museums (yawn). A visit to Santa Maria Novella is always a must and you've also got the beautiful Tuscan countryside all around, so a vineyard trip for Jim would have to be on the cards. I’d tag along, I guess…

And finally, finishing off in Sicily. I’d hit the beach with absolutely no plans, other than tuning everything out (by the end of the trip, that might even include Jim).

Tuscany

What are the five skincare products you can't live without on your trip?

A good SPF! It's the #1 priority when I'm packing my suitcase. Forget outfits, forget my makeup bag, I want to take the strongest formulation possible if I'm going to be in the baking Italian heat for a few weeks. Clarins Youth-protecting Sunscreen Very High Protection SPF50+ would be my pick for its multi-purpose benefits, offering sun protection (obviously) that also helps to maintain firmness and boost hyaluronic acid synthesis. The second I smelt it for the first time, I thought, 'Yep, that's my holiday SPF sorted'.

Next up, a hair mask to keep my mane in check while the humidity single-handedly attempts to leave it looking frazzled in every holiday picture. I'm a big fan of the Oribe Gold Lust Transformative Masque, as it conditions, softens and adds shine to hair while also providing it with UV protection to help prevent any future damage. If my trip is a couple of weeks long, I'll apply it twice and then lounge around with it on for about 10 minutes.

If you've been following me for a while, it’s going to be no surprise that Curél Deep Moisture Spray has a permanent spot at the top of my holiday packing list. To save myself from jumping into the River Arno when the heat gets too much (and believe me, I'd be tempted), a few regular spritzes of this throughout the day are complete cooling bliss. It offers long-lasting hydration, it doesn't leave my skin looking greasy… and it just feels good. Sometimes, it's that simple. It’s even available in a travel size too!

Are you taking any holiday reads?

Before any holiday, I load my iPad with as many magazine issues as it can possibly hold. Vogue, Elle, Harper’s, etc. –they’re all coming along to keep me company once I get on my beach lounger.

My skin never gets too dry, even in the summer, so I don't feel the need to switch things up with my moisturiser on holiday. My year-round go-to, The Moisturiser Fragrance Free, reliably keeps my skin hydrated with a conditioning formula of actives such as pro-vitamin B3, ceramides and hyaluronic acid. The lightweight, whipped texture is also perfect on muggy days. There is nothing worse than applying a thick, overly cloying cream when you're slowly melting in the heat.

Travel brings with it a whole lot of baggage – and no, not just my cases, I'm talking about the environment. You're facing air pollution, changing weather, different water quality and increased sun exposure, and our latest launch, The Antioxidant, is a must-have for protecting skin from damage, helping to brighten and even skin tone in the process. With this and an SPF in my bag, I know I'm fully covered when it comes to keeping my skin safe, and I can concentrate on the most important thing; enjoying myself and relaxing.

What's on your playlist?

The 1975 would be on heavy rotation, as always, but I like to keep things fresh every year with a different summer playlist. It’s generally always a mix of old and new, and yes, Duran Duran will inevitably find their way on there.

Thanks for telling us about your dream holiday, Caroline. I guess this is where we say 'ciao'.

Ciao a tutti. See, I’m fluent already just thinking about it!

SARA COX

Discover the beauty secrets and summer staples of Sara Cox, Broadcaster, Sunday Times Best-Selling Author and much-loved BBC Radio 2 Presenter.

1. What was the first product you remember using that got you into skincare?

The first product I remember using was the St Ives Apricot Scrub that I nicked from my sister! It was the first time my face felt nice, fresh, very scrubbed and clean. Looking back now, I don’t know if it was particularly good for my springy, young teen skin, but I loved it at the time!

2. What’s your favourite holiday destination?

I absolutely love Switzerland. We went last year and it’s a fabulous place. It’s not too hot and there’s loads to do. There are lots of amazing lakes that you can swim in, and if you enjoy an active day, you can go up into the mountains and then have a lovely walk back down. The kids are teenagers now, so a good age for going on big walks. Switzerland is perfect for a holiday, in my opinion.

3. What’s your favourite skincare brand? I can’t choose! My favourite skincare brand is changing all the time. I really like Sarah Chapman's Skin Insurance SPF 30. I’ve

used that for ages and really like it. I also love the Clarins Blue Orchid Treatment Oil – it really calms my skin! Of course, I love Skin Rocks; I’m really into Retinoid 2 at the moment. I also got the Caroline Hirons Winter Heroes Kit earlier this year and just love it. Liz Earle's Skin Repair Hydrating Night Cream is my evening moisturiser at the moment, which is another one of my favourites.

4. Describe your perfect summer holiday – do you prefer to sit by the pool and relax or go out and explore?

I’m both. I love walking, doing sporty activities and exploring first thing, then relaxing and reading by the pool after lunch. My perfect summer holiday, though, is doing active stuff and going on adventures. We went on a safari a couple of years ago, which was incredible. Getting up at 4 or 5am and going out for a few hours, then coming back for breakfast and spending the rest of the day chilling, was amazing for us. That was a once-in-alifetime trip, and it was perfect!

5. What are your favourite face and body SPFs for the summertime?

I’ve started treating myself recently and spending a bit more on suncare. I really like Rituals Sun Face Cream SPF 50+ and the Caudalie Vinosun Protect Very High Protection Sun Water SPF50+. It’s an oil, so it makes your skin look nice and dewy whilst also protecting with SPF 50+.

6. What’s next on your beauty/skincare wish list?

I was given a gift set from L’Occitane for my birthday which included the Almond Supple Skin Oil for the shower and it’s bloody gorgeous. I just got a tiny bottle of it so I’m going to treat myself to some of that – I’ll buy gallons of it!

7. What’s your desert island product for the summertime?

My desert island product would be the Clarins Blue Orchid Treatment Oil because it’s beautiful and calming. My skin always feels a little bit dry, so it’s lovely to have an oil I love so much.

Another product would be the Percy and Reed I Need a Hero! Wonder Shampoo and Conditioner. I love them so much. I also go to their salon and everything they use is amazing. I’d definitely want those products with me!

8. Which brand do you wish you had created and why?

I wish I had come up with Charlotte Tilbury. For a start, I’d save a lot of money as I spend so much on her products for my 14-year-old daughter! I think Charlotte herself is pretty awesome and I really like her makeup. My daughter is basically my makeup advisor and knows all the new products. I reckon I’ve paid for a few Christmas parties with all the products I’ve bought alone!

9. You’re going away and travelling with only hand luggage – what are the essentials you’re taking with you?

I’ve got really good at decanting things into little bottles. Something I take with me wherever I go is the Palmer's Shine Therapy Leave-In Conditioner. I have to have that to spritz on my hair just so I can get a brush through it – I love the stuff! Whether I’m up to Manchester for quick overnight trips or going abroad, I always make sure I’ve got some of that hair product at the very least.

Another product that is always decanted for my travels is the Balance Me Super Berry Cleansing Balm. I’ve used it for a while now and can’t get enough – their products feel really lovely on my skin.

10. What’s your favourite holiday read, podcast or music to listen to?

I’m working my way through all of Maggie O’Farrell and John Boyne’s back catalogues. I absolutely love those authors. I also read a lot of what I’m recommended. I’m currently reading The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, which a lot of people have been talking about.

Podcast-wise, I love Off Menu, and I really love Kirsty Young’s return to the airwaves with her Young Again series from Radio 4 and BBC Sounds. I’m a huge fan of hers and think she’s one of our best broadcasters.

11. What's been the highlight of your career so far?

There’s been so many highlights, I’ve been so lucky. Flying out to New York to interview Eminem and going out for dinner with all his friends was very cool – I also got to take my best mate, so there’s been some really fun stuff like that.

I guess the biggest for me was getting a daily teatime show on BBC Radio 2 which was the dream, the aim, and the goal. It was one of the best days of my life when I got that gig! Every day when I do it, I arrive pretty happy (because I’m doing it in the first place), and leave even happier because the listeners are fantastic company.

Though, in my 28-year long career, nothing has created as much excitement from friends, colleagues and family than my two 20-second audio cameo roles in Netflix’s One Day. Which is fine, because I love the author, the book, and the adaptation!

SUNBURNT SKIN TOP TIPS TO SOOTHE

Sunburn is a hallmark sign of spending too long in the sun and being careless with sunscreen, leaving your skin red, sore, dry, and flaky. If you know you’ve overdone it, here’s what to do:

Be gentle.

When the skin is burnt and inflamed, the last thing you should do is add fuel to the fire by using actives such as retinoids and exfoliants. Keep your routine simple; sticking to an ultra-gentle cleanser, nourishing moisturiser and sunscreen. A cooling mist and/or soothing treatment will help to calm redness and irritation, and opt for fragrance free products if your skin is sensitised.

Stay out of the sun. To avoid further damage, stay in the shade and protect sunburnt skin with loose clothing or a hat.

Instantly soothe scorched skin by applying a cold compress or taking a cool shower/bath. Avoid applying ice directly to the skin as this can cause further irritation. Hands off! Do not pick at peeling skin or blisters. This can inhibit the healing process and lead to further damage and potential infection.

Cool down.

COSMETIC DEBUNKED CLAIMS

We sat down with Ashley and Charlie from our NPD Team to talk all things cosmetic claims…

What is a cosmetic claim?

A cosmetic claim is anything said or shown about a product’s performance, function or characteristics that can be used to influence the consumer. This can cover anything from overall product performance to what ingredients are included and the added benefits they provide.

Why are cosmetic claims so important?

Claims are an important tool for all brands. They can help you to differentiate your product and highlight exactly what makes your product unique, and consumers will use claims to help inform their purchase decisions. It is the responsibility of the brand that all claims made about a product are truthful and fully substantiated.

What kind of claims can be made for cosmetics?

In the UK, similarly to the EU, cosmetic products and their claims fall under The Cosmetic Regulation. However, there is no set list of claims that can be made for a cosmetic product or type of cosmetic product. When assessing a claim, brands need to consider all aspects of how the product is presented that will contribute to how a consumer will interpret the claims.

However, it is important that whatever the claim is, it still complies with the regulatory cosmetic definition and does not imply that the product can do something outside of the cosmetic remit (e.g., a cosmetic cannot claim to treat or cure medical conditions such as acne or eczema).

Internationally, this can differ. For example, some countries – such as China – have a set list of product claims and how to prove them based on the type of product.

Does every claim made for a product need to be proven?

Charlie Ashley

Yes, each claim needs to be proven. This is a regulatory requirement and it is the brand’s responsibility to ensure that they have done this. The type of evidence, however, can differ and will depend on the claim; for example, product performance claims can be supported by clinical and consumer studies, whereas ingredient benefits can be supported by a literature review or published reports that already exist.

What are clinical studies and consumer trials?

Clinical studies and consumer trials are both methods that brands can use to prove a claim. A clinical study (or trial) is a form of testing carried out under strict clinical conditions and normally under the supervision of a qualified professional. These usually involve instrumental measurements and are best suited for objective claims – i.e., proven results that a consumer can’t measure with the naked eye. Consumer trials (or user trials) involve the consumer self-evaluating a product at home. These studies work best for subjective and sensory claims, such as how the product makes the skin look and feel.

Learn more about clinical tests and consumer trials.

What are the most important things we should look out for when shopping for skincare regarding product claims?

1. Look for the presence of both clinical and consumer claims. Clinical claims are proven results by scientific methods, and user trials demonstrate that these scientifically proven claims are actually visible to the consumer. Combining the two is the best recipe for proving the efficacy of a product. An example of a clinical claim would be ‘proven to increase hydration by 34%’, whereas a consumer claim could be ‘98% of users agree skin felt more hydrated after use’.

2. When products are quoting consumer studies, the higher the number of participants, the better – ideally, this should be 100+. This suggests that the panel is more likely to be representative of a wide and diverse pool of people.

For every claim made, there must be sufficient evidence in place to demonstrate that it is true.
— Charlie Pearce BSc, Regulatory and Compliance Officer

3. Be mindful of how claims are worded – is it a product claim or an ingredient story? Just because the ingredient has been proven to achieve said claim doesn’t mean the product will deliver the same result. Good claims will link the two effectively.
