walks a day during the week, you might want to feed them Everyday Energy, but if at the weekend you’re doing something that requires a little more endurance like a long hike or a run then you may want to charge your dogs diet up to Extra Energy, which has a little more protein & fat to ensure they have all the nutrients they need for the additional activity.
FOR PUPPIES AND JUNIOR DOGS
The Skinner’s Get Out & Go! range offers everything an active dog needs from puppyhood through to old age, including perfectly nutritionally balanced complete wet and dry foods – made from wholesome ingredients with an added superfood boost – through to energy and recovery bars and even a handy pack of training treats.

All foods in the range are formulated to a grain free recipe and have a protein base of chicken, meaning you can change to a different food when necessary, by moving up and down the protein and fat levels in our range. For example, your dog has a couple of good

WELLBEING FOR YOU AND YOUR DOG
From long walks in the country to the frantic fun of flyball, exercise is great for your dog’s physical and mental health wellbeing – and for yours too. Here, we look at some of the ways you can both get out and go!
Dogs are good for our health. There’s much research that backs this up, including a 2021 report that claimed 76% supported their mental health throughout the pandemic and a Swedish study which found that having a dog was associated with a 23% reduction from death due to heart disease.
benefits of being outdoors, including fresh air and, when the sun is out, all-important vitamin D.
suit all levels of fitness and all ages of dog. There are even yoga classes (doga) you can do together.
Even stroking our pet can offer wellbeing benefits, boosting feel good hormones and lowering both blood pressure and the stress hormone, cortisol.
Those who live with dogs also seem to respond better to stress and have better mental health. Research also shows having a dog can reduce depression and loneliness. It’s perhaps unsurprising – dog owners are around four times more likely to meet physical activity level guidelines. Our dogs motivate us to get outside, engage in exercise and get all the mental and physical
Exercising with your dog is beneficial for both of you. Being active together strengthens the bond between you and boosts endorphins for both of you.
Daily exercise is important for both dogs and their people, and having a dog can be as, or even more, motivating than having a gym buddy. After all, when your dog gives you that pleading look that says it’s time to get outside for a walk, it’s hard to say no.
There are so many activities you can get involved with that will offer huge health benefits to both you and your dog. From long walks to Flyball, there are activities to
The important thing is to make sure you are getting appropriate levels of exercise and that neither is overdoing it at the start. If you’re new to an activity, begin slowly and build up both of your fitness levels and confidence.
WELLBEING & EXERCISE 10 Skinner’s Get Out & Go!
GETTING STARTED
Exercising with a four-legged friend is much more fun than doing it alone and there are so many activities to choose from…
WALKING
Perhaps the most obvious form of exercise with your dog is walking. But this doesn’t mean it needs to be boring. Getting out early in the morning can be a great way to set you both up for the day and getting fresh air and daylight early in the day can be really useful in helping you wake up. A brisk walk will help you both burn calories and energy and a slower stroll somewhere beautiful, such as in woodland, can provide the wellbeing benefits of ecotherapy or forest bathing.
RUNNING
Perfect for getting your heart rate up, dealing with stress and to challenge yourself, running with your dog is great all-round exercise.
Begin slowly and perhaps walk the route first so you can see if there will be any challenging bits. It’s a good idea to have a chat with your vet before you begin a new form of exercise with your dog and remember that you shouldn’t take a puppy running. Be guided by your dog’s pace and ability – for example, smaller breeds might not be able to cover as much ground as larger dogs.
AGILITY
Agility is the perfect exercise for intelligent, energetic dogs. Essentially your dog learns to navigate an agility course built of obstacles, such as hurdles, tunnels, see-saws and more – all at a running pace. It’s brilliant for getting you both super fit. You can have lessons with a professional and then carry on the training yourself once you know what you’re doing. There are hundreds of agility clubs across the country, so you’re sure to find one close to you.
FLYBALL
Flyball is fast and huge fun for dogs that like to run. It’s a relay race where two teams of four dogs run against each other. It’s more exercise for the dogs than the humans, although there are short sprints for the handlers too. It’s great exercise for dogs that love tennis balls.
CYCLING
Cycling with dogs that enjoy long, fast runs is an unbeatable form of exercise as long as your dog has bulletproof recall and you pick a route that is safe and manageable. Begin with short rides and by training your dog to stick close to your bike. It’s perfect for energetic dogs and high-energy breeds, such as Huskies and Dalmatians.
WELLBEING & EXERCISE
Skinner’s Get Out & Go! 13
CANICROSS
Canicross is essentially cross-country running with dogs where the dogs are the powering force and are therefore harnessed and attached by a harness. It’s a team sport, where the human directs the dog with voice commands from behind. It’s a great sport as it exercises both body and mind for dog and human alike. It is said that any breed is suitable (do check with your vet on your particular dog).
SUMMARY
So, whatever your fitness level, there’s an activity you can enjoy with your four-legged friend and a good place to start is the Kennel Club website at www.kennelclub.co.uk where you’ll find lots of guidance on which activities are best for which age of dog.
Another good idea is to speak to your dog’s vet or your breeder, both of whom will be able to steer you in the direction of the activity best suited for your dog.

SKINNER’S: OFFICIAL SUPPORTER OF
parkrun
From its humble beginnings back in 2004, when 13 runners got together to run in Bushey Park in Teddington, parkrun has grown into an international phenomenon, with more than six million registered participants.
BE PREPARED
Introduce your dog to parkrun slowly, by doing some short, local practice sessions and watch closely how your dog reacts. Make sure he enjoys running, is properly hydrated and always run at your dog’s pace (if he’s slower than you) and that you respect his limits. Once your dog is well practiced and is enjoying running, you can take him to his first event.
It’s super-inclusive, open to anyone and everyone regardless of age or ability, and dogs are welcome at most 5km events, although this is limited to one dog per human runner.
The parkrun events take place on Saturday mornings and you can run, jog or walk the course. You’ll see everyone from total newbies to Olympians at events across the world. It really is a marvellous way to have fun, enjoy the outdoors, get fit and meet like-minded people and their dogs.
At parkrun events, dogs need to be kept under strict control, on either a short lead or wearing a harness so you can take the best care that you don’t trip up another runner.
Because parkrun offers a brilliant way to enjoy time with your dog, The Skinner’s team are thrilled to let you know we are now parkrun sponsors.
We’ll be at selected events across the country so be sure to keep an eye on the events page on our website. – whether you’re new to the sport or a seasoned pro – do pop along and say hello if you see us. We’d love to meet you and your canine running partners.
PARKRUN
Getting involved in your local parkrun is enormous fun and a wonderful way to enjoy exercise, companionship and fresh air with your dog…

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
I like the idea of giving my dog a snack when she’s been particularly active to help her recover from her exertions, but how long should I wait before giving it to her?
The Get Out & Go! Recovery Bar is formulated to support your dog’s recovery and is a great way to replace the energy that has been expended during periods of intense activity. Ideally you should give your dog the energy bar 30-60 minutes after the activity is finished.
My Springer Spaniel and I regularly run 10km in Canicross events. How frequently should I be feeding her?
We recommend a twice-a-day feeding strategy for active dogs to ensure they are properly fuelled. Ideally, always feed at least an hour before exercise (and preferably much longer for intense activity such as Canicross). Also, allow time after exercise before a large meal, although a small recovery snack, such as the Get Out & Go! Recovery Bar, can help support recovery after exertion. Most fit and conditioned dogs will not need to be fed during a 10km run, although providing a small carbohydrate ‘snack’ can be beneficial. The Get Out & Go! Energy Bar is ideal for active dogs in need of a boost!
From what age can I give my puppy training treats?
Our new Get Out & Go! Training Treats are perfect for treat-based training and are suitable for puppies from eight weeks old. Make sure, however, that treat use should not exceed 10% of your puppy’s daily calorie intake.
Should I feed my dog an energy bar while on one of our everyday walks?
Most fit and healthy dogs would not need additional nutritional support on a gentle walk. For longer, more intense walks and periods of activity – perhaps in cold, wet or extreme conditions – nutritional support in the form of an energy bar can be a useful way to support your dog on the go.
I like the idea of feeding my dog a mix of dry food and wet food. Is it OK to take this approach?
Both our wet and our dry foods are nutritionally complete so can be fed alone, or if preferred, mixed together. If you were looking to feed a 50/50 mix of wet and dry, then we would suggest feeding 50% of the recommended amount for both the wet and dry diet and mixing them well. Or alternatively you can feed the ratio that suits your dog- if you need assistance working this out, then please contact our nutrition team.
