It pains me when I see young men using mobile phones worth over thirty-five to sixty thousand naira. All they do these days is to ping, chat and all that, wasting precious time doing unnecessary things. And you see them crying.........

With what the Ministry or the Government has done so far, have there been results? So far so good, I would say yes, because before the advent of this present administration of His Excellency, our youths took up arms against the Government and that led to so many companies fleeing from Port Harcourt to Lagos, Calabar. Some even left the shores of Nigeria. Since His Excellency came with a sincere approach and tackled this menace that was ravaging our economy, youth restiveness has reduced drastically. Apart from the amnesty program, there are one or two programs that have been initiated. We are working closely with the Nigerian Youth Council, we talk to their leaders and they also represent the affiliate bodies. We tell them not to allow their members to cause problems for the

Government. You will agree with me that for now, we are enjoying relative peace. So I can say it has really paid off. Most persons are not aware of all the laudable achievement you have had so far. How do you make it known? Well, I have my way of doing things. The truth is that I am a man that does not like blowing his own trumpet. I like to do things but not eye service. I approach issues differently. For instance, one of our daughters, Miss Mercy Chinwoh, is the present Nigerian idol. You might not believe it, I went to all the media houses here in Port Harcourt, called them and said “please we have one of our daughters who is at the verge of winning the Nigerian idol, use your plat form and ask people to support her. If I haven't told you, you wouldn't have known apart from the few persons who were

there. I also went to face book and asked people to vote for her. So that is the approach I am using. I'm not ignorant of the fact that in order for me to always be on the media, I have to spend some amount of money and the funds is not really available for publicity. But somehow we have been telling the public what we have been doing so that it will be on record. Regarding skills acquisition programs, you made mention of ICT and underwater training, are there other trainings you have had or you intend to embark on? We intend to embark on more programs. There is a major one we are looking at, that is establishing a Rivers State Youth Development Centre with the support of His Excellency. I have a technical background and with that I know that one does not need to have a University degree to put food on the table. In the proposed youth d e v e l o p m e n t c e n t r e d i ff e r e n t vocations would be undertaken and whoever is privileged to be there can choose any of the vocations, be it Carpentry and Joinery, Electrical and Electronics, Welding and Fabrication, Catering and a whole lot more. Those who are somewhat disadvantaged, whose parents cannot afford to send them to school can go through these vocational training and acquire skills to better their life. When they graduate, a certificate of competence will be given to them to show that they have passed through a formal training process. They can set up a small scale business or seek for a job in any firm to sustain themselves. Is the funding by the government enough to achieve good result? Well, on a lighter note, government in every facet and in every country of the world is usually accessed by physical infrastructure. The Government here emerged by democratic process. In our case, PDP is the ruling party in Nigeria. The other parties that couldn't emerge after the election will be packing blames on the ruling party. So in order for them to prove that they are actually doing something; it is to do more of the infrastructure so that people can see what they are doing. >>

Nigerians speak We asked some responsible parents the question: Would you allow your child to run a skills program? Here are their answers.

Charles Ekonse Yes, because, with the way Nigeria is now, I think somebody with skill can survive. But without skill he may be dancing around just like that. So, I will always recommend it for people and for my children.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF SKILL IN THE SOCIETY

To me, skill is more like the most important thing right now anyone can think of. Come to think of it, we have so many graduates. It is no longer the latest trend. Being a graduate is like the least certificate you can even have and if you get into the labour market you will see many of them (graduates). You have so much competition here and there, so what is your stand if you become a graduate today? I think the best thing is for you to get out Harrienta Nwabueze there, to get involved in one skill (handwork) or the other. You could be self employed. There are so many skills you can learn out there that are really helpful and that reduce crime and other things like prostitution. So, I feel skill is very important for every youth today and I recommend it for every youth in the society.

Uduka Oji

Mrs Egioma Eboku

Yes. Because with technology now somebody can have skills and he can open a shop for himself and even employ others. So, it will be good for the child.

Yes. If he or she is old enough. It depends on the age. At the end, she will acquire more knowledge on how to carry out these various skill like baking, hair dressing and others.

Mr. Ayo Mesiema Yes, because I am a benefactor of a skill acquisition program. In fact, what I am doing is not what I read in school. So, if I had not acquired that skill probably I would not have had something doing today. I certainly recommend it also for parent, I know vocational education is not enough. You must have skills most especially in Nigeria today. Skills are very important.
