BEWARE A monthly series on recent cyberattacks
Cyberattacks are unwelcome attempts to steal, expose, alter, disable, or destroy information by gaining unauthorized access to computer systems. The latest statistics from tech platform, Techjury states that globally, 30000 websites are hacked daily. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT EVERY 39 SECONDS, THERE IS A CYBER ATTACK SOMEWHERE ON THE WEB?
In our series, BEWARE, we focus on the latest cyberattacks worldwide and what experts have to say about tackling them.
CASE 1: An oil production and exploration company faced a significant cyber-attack in April 2022 at its field headquarters in Duliajan, eastern Assam, with the hacker seeking $75,000,000. The firm officials discovered and reported a malware attack. The organization took precautionary actions after receiving the malware threat warning. The event was also immediately reported to network management service providers and the Anti-Virus Team. CERT-In was also notified of the issue. Cert-In is the government's single point of contact for cyber security issues such as hacking and phishing.
CASE 2: In April 2022, links to a fake website of a postal service provider were shared on social media in the latest phishing attempt targeting mobile phone and computer users. The links were being sent claiming that users would receive a reward of Rs 6,000 if they shared them. Clicking on the links will send visitors to a fake website with a Chinese connection. They had the potential to allow criminals to access consumers' devices. According to a cybersecurity firm, the scammers built the website with Cloudflare, a company based in the United States. China is linked to the top domain (frequently used for malware and phishing). Jiangsu Bangning Science and Technology, Jiangsu Province, China, is the website's sponsor. What should one do when confronted with such malicious links? What are the steps to be taken in the event of an attack?
