CONGRATULATIONS

2024 the PLOT

Class of 2024 Shines: A Celebration of Growth and New Beginnings

Adeline Christensen and Rylee Smith

And just like that, the Class of 2024 is stepping onto the graduation stage; a seemingly small step toward the long-awaited diploma and a giant leap toward our future! This class is the emblem of resiliency, peer-to-peer care, and inclusion. From elementary school where we learned the alphabet to navigating that awkward phase known as middle school, this class has developed into a group of leaders and lifelong learners, setting an example for classes to come. Beginning in the fall of 2020, the now senior class had no idea what to expect in the face of a virtual learning environment enforced by COVID-19. Coming into a new domain with different challenges forced us as a class to adapt in ways like never before. As COVID precautions began to lift, the transition from online Zoom classes to handling in-person learning at the high school was a difficult one. Anxiety ensued at the mere thought of getting lost in ‘the maze’, walking into the wrong class, or being surrounded by upperclassmen. As the class of 2024, we endured the uncertainty of the pandemic and became stronger, more independently driven students because of it. Throughout the last four years, this class has displayed resilience through change, perseverance through IB classes, and the ability to push ourselves to be the best in sports, theater, art, and other hobbies. A constant need and desire for challenge has been a trait most admired upon reflection of our class, something that can be brought into college, the workforce, or other postsecondary endeavors.

Senior year brought homecoming in the Black Box, the Power Puff football game (seniors won obviously), our last high school football games, a frigid Senior Sunrise, Prom in Santorini, a summer

European adventure, the IB Art Show, many FBLA trips to Denver and Grand Junction, and late night basketball bus rides to the Western Front. This year participating in sports like dance that went to states, Model UN trips to New York City, NHS events, musicals, plays, Ex Ed, and art experiences, also helped us emerge with endless opportunities to make memories alongside mentors and peers, effectively bringing our class even closer to being family than before. IB exams were a notable nuisance to all, but the rewarding feeling of accomplishment from finishing each test surrounded us throughout the last few weeks of the senior school year. Over the years, the class of 2024 has appreciated and looked forward to Ex Ed in the fall, spirit weeks to celebrate the winter season, football games where the spirit was high regardless of the scoreboard, dance performances in the big gym that got the crowd going wild, the Spring Musical where we were convinced we were all watching a Broadway show, and everything in between. Support in all areas of interest has never been an issue when talking about the class of 2024.

Any graduating class, more than obtaining their diploma or leaving high school, wishes to be connected to their peers. The class of 2024 has deeply exhibited this important trait of community through active inclusion and participation in school functions along with individual events. Relationships have been made across the board for many seniors that will last for years to come and be cherished forever. It is amazing to look around and see how students in the class of 2024, have found a passion they are bringing to college because of the teachers, coaches, and mentors they have had at Aspen High School. Because of clubs like FBLA and Model

UN, many are interested in business and solving world problems, opportunities in working on the Skier Scribbler, yearbook, and Skier TV have encouraged many other students to pursue journalism or other creative outlets. The love, encouragement, and engagement the class of 2024 has received from teachers is astounding, it continues to fuel the interests and confidence of others as we enter into the next phase of our lives.

Congratulations! There is no doubt that this class, made up of many unique and motivated individuals like future actors, musical legends, tiny home builders, journalistic leaders, avid skiers, dancers, and sports stars, possesses an unwavering ability to positively influence the world. With each action, word, and attitude, this class is one that will promote inclusion in a divided society and defy the lines of complacency in the face of hardship.

The future unquestionably entails great adventure, endless possibilities, and unforeseen experiences that will shape your divine character as you set off to take on your roles in numerous communities. We applaud you and hope that the Class of 2024 may experience support, and fulfillment, achieve their highest potential, and most importantly, continue to have compassion toward others.

Class of 2024, never cease to establish connections with all different types of people, subjects, and experiences. If this class can continue to display the charismatic traits it has thus far, there is no doubt this may be achieved. For old-time’s sake, “seniors, seniors, what’s your number? 2024, 2024, 2024”.

Kayla is not only knowledgeable inside the classroom, but she has a passion for the outdoors and adventure, working as a part-time ski instructor and leading some of the most rigorous backpacking ex-ed trips. By fostering an encouraging atmosphere in her classroom, Kayla effortlessly connects with each student to inspire and support their growth throughout high school and beyond.

BRENT MAIOLO

Brent is well involved in various curriculums at AHS. He not only teaches chemistry and biology but is also the teacher who leads the Aspen Mountain Guide School course. Through the variety of classes that Brent is a part of, he is able to connect with his students on many different levels, inside and outside of the classroom. From chemistry labs to receiving ski instructor certifications at our local ski resorts, Brent consistently shows up with a positive attitude and outgoing personality that creates a healthy space for both him and his students. He understands the importance balance of school and fun, and always prioritizes the well-being of his students. JULIE TRAHON

Julie Trahon is the art teacher at Aspen High School. Trahon started teaching IB Arts for the first time this school year. Even though it is her first time teaching IB, she made it seem natural, as she helps all students feel welcomed while teaching them more techniques and styles of art. She is very kind and courteous as she always puts her students first. If it is a test, a writing assignment, or overall work, she tries her best to make the class less stressful for the students by giving them more time than required, as well as giving them her undivided attention. While trying to provide her students the best opportunity to succeed in school, as well as learning how to teach in a more difficult environment, she sets an example and inspiration to all potential new teachers that students would love to attend for future careers.

SUSANNE MORRISON

Susanne Morrison is a Post-Secondary Counseling Administrative Coordinator and utilizes her influence to help the senior class, schedule, and actively lead in extracurriculars. Susanne is the emblem of care and displays her leadership by guiding seniors in their paths of post-secondary plans. She also leads the Shining Stars Club, organizing and planning, in order to remain actively involved within the realm of both school inclusion and connection to those outside the building through her relational skills. Susanne’s charismatic ambiance is one that cannot go unnoticed and her door remains open throughout the whole day, welcoming students, faculty, and anyone needing ears to listen.

STEVE SAND

When you think about Steve Sand you think of our economics teacher but, he is so much more than that. He is someone who often gives you a good laugh and cheers you up from just his personality. Not only is he a fine teacher but also an avid pickleball player. During ExEd, he inspires everyone to challenge him, and most lose because he is unbeatable. Steve’s ability to connect with the whole student body is yet another example of his kind and caring personality. Steve is available any time during the school day for students, whether it is for economics or to help students file their taxes. Steve has made a big dent in Aspen High School and the student body as a whole is eternally grateful for everything he has done. Aspen High School wouldn’t be the same without you Steve, thank you for everything that you do. We love you!!

LOVE WE OUR TEACHERS

SARAH STRASSBURGER AND BECKY OLIVER

Sarah Strassburger is someone who constantly goes above and beyond, in terms of improving our community. She is a leader, a learner, and most importantly she is our friend. Her principal leadership has influenced all seniors over the past four years to push themselves in every aspect of their lives, something we can carry on to college, the workforce, a gap year, and every other adventure we have yet to embark on. Becky Oliver is the vice principal of AHS and never fails to wear a smile around the school. She is constantly working to build connections with students and faculty, all while taking on these journeys with her dog, Lyla. Her presence is one of compassion and care, creating an open environment for anyone wishing to talk or voice their opinions. Thank you both for supporting the successes of our endeavors as we graduate high school and beyond.

DAVID CLARK

Mr. Clark is a once-in-a-lifetime teacher. If you were lucky enough to experience him teaching Spanish, you were able to see the dedication he put into a class he had never taught before. Not only was Mr. Clark an unforgettable Spanish teacher but he has proven to be an excellent history teacher. It’s hard to be able to say you are excited to attend a class but students can easily say that for any of his classes. Mr. Clark will put your needs over anything else and we could not be luckier to have a teacher that cares so deeply for his students. Mr. Clark’s loud charismatic attitude during class is an instant motivator on top of his already hilarious personality. Additionally, the jokes and well-known one-liners that Mr. Clark voices to the students of AHS, such as “Don’t add or subtract to the population this weekend” help him leave a lasting positive impression on all of his students. Thank you, Mr. Clark, for everything you do to foster student’s success in all of their endeavors. You are amazing!

KERRY GALUSHA

Kerry Galusha educates the students of Aspen High School in English, or more specifically, the Language and Literature course. Kerry teaches English through engaging books, movies, TV shows, and detailed memoirs that excite students to be engaged in their learning. Kerry is known for always making her students laugh and helping them feel more engaged from the first class in their freshman or sophomore year leading to their final senior year exams. From helping her students act out Shakespeare, to in-depth discussions about political cartoons, she always helps and provides endless support to her students to stay focused and occupied throughout the year.

HAYLEN GONZALEZ-PITA

Haylen, the seniors want to express our deepest gratitude for the remarkable impact you have had on our students and school community. You have an incredible ability to make learning engaging and meaningful. Your patience, creativity, and genuine care for your students creates a nurturing environment where they feel encouraged and supported to reach their full potential. You go above and beyond to ensure each student feels valued and understood, and your efforts extend far beyond the classroom. Whether it’s through your innovative lesson plans, the extra time you spend helping students after class, or the way you foster a love for learning, you make a lasting difference in their lives. Your positive influence and dedication to your craft are truly commendable. We love you and will miss you so much!

LOVE WE OUR TEACHERS

BRENNAN DIGNAN

This was Brennan’s first year at AHS, stepping into a post-secondary counselor position after the departure of Charlie Laube. This was not an easy transition as half of the students had already begun thinking about their future plans, however, Brennan stepped into this job without any hesitation. Brennan’s ability to create personal connections with all students allows for a supportive environment where individuals feel understood and valued. By fostering these relationships, he instills a sense of confidence and trust, making students’ plans after high school seem more manageable and attainable. Whether offering guidance or lending an empathetic ear, Brennan’s personalized approach empowers students to navigate their aspirations with clarity and assurance.

KAREN HAWKES

Karen Hawkes is a post-secondary counselor at Aspen High School. She is tasked with the job of helping the upperclassmen through the journey of finding what they want to do in their post-secondary life. Karen begins her non-stop support at the end of their sophomore year and the beginning of students junior year. The endless support and time Karen dedicates to the students and their post-secondary journey is greatly appreciated. Karen creates an environment that allows students to open up and be brave about their goals for the future. She has the student’s best interest in mind and strives to create relationships both inside and outside the counseling office. Karen is always accommodating of their goals and plans action steps to ensure success for the students. Furthermore, the students, staff, and the community greatly appreciate Karen’s ability to put student success first.

ITSEL ZUNIGA

Itsel is a warmhearted, kind, and caring individual. We all want to extend our gratitude for the work you do every day. Beyond the tasks and duties you so graciously complete each day, it’s your genuine care for the well-being of our school community that makes such a significant difference. You create a welcoming environment that makes everyone feel valued and supported. Your hard work, reliability, and cheerful demeanor contribute greatly to our school’s success and positive atmosphere. Thank you for being the heart of our school, for your relentless dedication, and for making our days brighter with your presence. We truly appreciate everything you do and we are truly blessed to have such an amazing person to see every day. Seniors will miss you next year!

SARAH WARD

Sarah Ward is our very outgoing journalism and yearbook teacher at Aspen High School. She inspires all of her students to pursue writing and/ or photography after high school while also supporting younger students in elementary and middle school to get a jumpstart on their journalism careers. Sarah has been an outstanding role model for the past four years of our high school careers. Her ability to make her students feel so cared for and appreciated all the time is a trait truly unique to Sarah! Her endless passion allows for a welcoming and encouraging environment for her students to thrive. Regardless of external circumstances, Sarah devotes her time and energy to instilling confidence and passion in her students. She has served as our rock for the past four years, and she has taught us the most valuable lessons in the classroom and unforgettable life advice that we will take with us throughout the rest of our lives. Sarah is a bright, kind individual who has helped us strive throughout high school. Sarah has inspired our love for journalism and all of the current seniors will deeply miss her as we depart to our next chapters in life. We can’t possibly thank you for everything you have taught us inside and outside of the classroom, and we are all excited to visit you when we return!
