Check out, “The Social History of Comic Books” or “Walking with Mastodons” or perhaps, “Robert Redford: The Director”. Maybe, “Riding the Silver Tsunami” or “Spanish Murmurs and Secrets”? These are just a few of the classes being offered for our OLLI Spring Term. In April, Frank Alarcon, who will move into the OLLI Member Presidency role, and I, will be attending the National Osher Lifelong Learning Conference in Irving, Texas. We’ll be able to network with other leaders from OLLIs across the country – 119 in all. OLLI at FSU is so fortunate to be a part of this solid lifelong learning organization nationwide.

As always, we’ll bring back new ideas to consider for our program.

2016 was an eventful year. With the extraordinary support of the Bernard Osher Foundation and the University, our excellent relationship with the College of Social Sciences and the Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy, we begin our 26th year stronger than ever. Retirement, and near retirement, continues to be redefined.

A Message from OLLI Member President Carroll Bewley I have had the privilege of serving as your OLLI Member President during a memorable year, during which we have celebrated OLLI at FSU’s 25th anniversary. The successful OLLI program of lifelong learning that we enjoy today is the result of the vision and hard work of many people over the years, and our challenge is to perpetuate and improve it for those who follow us.

Many of you participated in the special events marking this celebration, such as acclaimed National Public Radio correspondent Ina Jaffe’s presentation on lifelong learning, our Gala party at the University Center or the lectures on topics of particular interest to seniors. And there’s more to come as we begin the Spring Semester.

Our Curriculum Committee has once again put together a program of courses that I believe you will find very appealing. They always try to strike a balance between subject areas such as history, science, literature, the arts, etc., and you’ll see that reflected in this semester’s lineup. After you take a look, paraphrasing the old potato chip commercial line, “We bet you can’t take just one.”

On the Activities side, we’ve started a couple of new clubs this year: the OLLI Paddler’s Club and the OLLI Plant-Based Eating Club.

And check out the interesting field trips, culture and arts and social events we have planned; there’s something for everyone.

One of our emphasis areas this year has been inclusivity. Our Inclusivity Committee is actively working, as its mission statement says, “to recruit and retain members from all facets of our community.” But all of us have the opportunity to reach out to friends, neighbors, acquaintances from church or clubs and many other connections to let them know about OLLI and that we are a welcoming and inclusive organization. So I ask for your help in enabling us to reach our goal of an OLLI at FSU that mirrors our entire community.

Finally, I wish you a rewarding experience as you continue on your lifelong learning path this semester. A quote attributed to Goethe says, “No one has ever completed their apprenticeship.” So, fellow apprentices, let’s continue in the quest to expand our knowledge.

HISTORY AND CURRENT EVENTS Executive Clemency in Florida (3-Week Class meets 3/6, 3/20 with a 4-hour session at the Capitol on Wednesday 3/15 from 8am to noon) Mark Schlakman, Senior Program Director, Center for the Advancement of Human Rights, FSU Mondays, 9:00am - 11:00am Tuition $40 (Room #214, Pepper Center, FSU Campus)

A unique opportunity to gain insight into Florida’s highly confidential executive clemency process that includes pardons, commutations of sentences and restoration of civil rights to vote, serve on a jury and hold public office for people who have completed sentences for felony convictions. Observe the governor and Cabinet in action in their collective capacity as Florida’s Board of Executive Clemency during a quarterly meeting at the Capitol. This course will be structured around three classes – two hours/four hours/two hours, for a total of eight hours overall. The four-hour class contemplates observation of a Clemency Board meeting at the Capitol, which typically begins at 8 am. The two-hour classes take place at the Pepper Center prior to and following our “field trip” to the Capitol, which allows for introduction, orientation and preparation, and then debriefing and discussion afterward. From Liberty to Democracy: The Transformation of American Government (3-Week Class on 2/22, 3/1 and 3/8) Randall Holcombe, DeVoe Moore Professor of Economics, FSU Wednesdays, 9:00am - 11:00am Tuition $30 (Room #214, Pepper Center, FSU Campus)

If we were to go back to 1776 and ask the typical colonist to state, in one word, the fundamental principle of the new American government, that word would be liberty. The new government was formed to protect the rights of its citizens.

If we were to ask the same question of the typical American today, the answer would be democracy. Our government is a democracy that carries out the will of the people, as determined by our democratic decision-making process. This course looks at American political history to explain how the fundamental principle of American government was transformed from liberty to democracy. Class size limit: 30.

Explore several seemingly vexing foreign policy challenges currently confronting the United States. The Foreign Policy Association’s 2017 Great Decisions briefing book and corresponding informational videos provide essential background and context as well as a range of perspectives augmented by guided class discussions incorporating pertinent real-time developments collectively. These will serve as the framework for our brief immersion into the following topical areas: the Future of Europe, Trade and Politics, Conflict in the South China Sea, Saudi Arabia in Transition, US Foreign Policy and Petroleum, Latin America’s Political Pendulum, Prospects for Afghanistan and Pakistan, and Nuclear Security. The Grove: Past, Present, and Future Johnathan H. Grandage, Executive Director, The Grove Museum, Florida Department of State Thursdays, 6:00pm - 8:00pm Tuition $60 (The Grove, W 1st Ave, Tallahassee, FL 32303)

This course provides an in-depth study of the Call-Collins House at The Grove, including recent rehabilitation efforts undertaken by the Florida Department of State. Each session explores how the story of The Grove intersects with broader themes in local, regional and national history. This approach will touch upon several topics critical to understanding the history of The Grove and its residents in historical context, including slavery; the Seminole Wars; business and politics in territorial Florida; the Civil War and Reconstruction; the Gilded Age and Progressive Era; the Civil Rights Movement; environmental sustainability; and historic preservation. Participants will gain a greater appreciation for how the history and ongoing interpretation of The Grove opens a window onto the entire American experience. Suggested reading can be viewed online. Mobility Requirement: Expect to walk short distances and stand for short amounts of time while touring the house and grounds, but most of class time will be spent seated. Class size limit: 23.

agna Carta and Its Afterlife (NEW) Ralph Turner, Professor of History Emeritus, FSU Mondays, 2:00pm - 4:00pm (Room #214, Pepper Center, FSU Campus)

This course will examine the background and setting of Magna Carta, the European intellectual, political, and social background and the nature of the Angevin Empire that included the kingdom of England. We will survey the reign of King John (1199-1216), first examining the Church’s teachings on law and government and the attitudes of the aristocracy toward royal authority. Then we will turn to the crisis of John’s rulership that culminated in the Great Charter of 1215. A detailed examination of Magna Carta will note its influence on later political ideas. The course will examine the fate of the Charter in the later Middle Ages and a rebirth of its significance in 17th-century England. We will conclude with a discussion of the Charter’s afterlife in England and in the 13 American colonies and later in the United States. Suggested Reading can be viewed online. Class size limit: 30.

On the Edge of Defeat: How WWII Was Won, 1942-45 (NEW) Rodney Anderson, Professor Emeritus of History, FSU Tuesdays, 2:00pm - 4:00pm (Broad Auditorium, Pepper Center, FSU Campus)

What seemed obvious in hindsight, was anything but for the people who actually lived that history. Richard Overy writes, “No rational man in early 1942 would have guessed at the eventual outcome of the war.” Indeed, by the spring of 1942, German forces had easily overrun all of Europe, and appeared ready to drive the British out of North Africa. In Russia, German panzers had rolled over weak resistance, with over half that huge nation’s industrial capacity now behind enemy lines. In the Atlantic, German U-boats were sinking Allied ships faster than they could be replaced. In the Pacific, the unbeaten Japanese forces occupied a vast territory containing huge supplies of human and natural resources. Yet, the Allies won, and this course is about how that happened. For example, how is it that Germany, which pioneered mobile warfare, depended on horses to carry its infantry supplies? How is it that Russia could out-produce the vaunted German industry in military hardware? And how does one carry out a successful invasion of an enemy-held foreign shore?

Politics in Contemporary China Minna Jia, Director of Survey Research Laboratory, College of Social Sciences and Public Policy, FSU Thursdays, 2:00pm - 4:00pm (Room #214, Pepper Center, FSU Campus)

This course is designed as an introduction to the contemporary political system of the People’s Republic of China. The objective of the course is to introduce students to the basic aspects of political institutions and processes as well as major events and policies in Chinese political life. Emphasis is on the political development of China. The course will cover the following major topics: the 1949 revolution, the great leap forward, the Culture Revolution, post-Mao economic and political reforms. Attention will be devoted to contemporary political systems, mass politics, grassroots democracy, several policies (energy policy, one-child policy), and Chinese leadership. The course will also discuss future scenarios of China by exploring the possibility of China’s democratization or other forms of authoritarianism.

With the aging of the Baby Boom generation, the United States and Florida are facing exciting opportunities and daunting challenges related to this “Silver Tsunami”. Faculty from the FSU College of Social Sciences and Public Policy will discuss this demographic trend, what it means for the state and country, and the potential policy impacts from the aging of the Baby Boom cohort. So They Could Fly: Legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen (NEW) Richard K. Dozier, Dean Emeritus, Tuskegee School of Architecture Mondays, 11:30am - 1:30pm (Gallery 14 at 4 Oaks Community Church, 4500 W Shannon Lakes #12)

This course explores the vision and perseverance of the Tuskegee administrators in the development of Moton Field as well as the World War II contributions of the now famed Tuskegee Airmen. The course will increase understanding and appreciation of both and brings balance to the more well-known story of the Red Tail fighter pilots, their support groups and their return home following the close of the war. We will explore the vision of Tuskegee President F.D. Patterson to institute flight training at Tuskegee and the later design and construction of the Army Flight Training Base made famous by the graduate fighter pilots. Special mention will be made of local Tuskegee airmen such as Lt. James Polkinghorne (FAMU dorm named for him) and General Chappie James, both Pensacola natives. Broadly illustrated talks and images of Tuskegee airmen, the Tuskegee Institute campus, and the restoration and dedication of the NPS Tuskegee Moton Airfield will be made available and used to enhance our discussions. From the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931 to the deck of the USS Missouri, in 1945. On the way, we will attack Pearl Harbor and “Island Hop” from Guadalcanal to Okinawa. The last lecture will begin with the atomic age in the skies over Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

HUMANITIES FOUND: Vernacular Art History from Folk and Outsider to Contemporary (3-Week Class on 2/22, 3/1 and 3/8) (NEW) Grace Robinson, Executive Director, and Anissa Ford, Education Director, both at the Gadsden Arts Center & Museum Wednesdays, 2:00pm - 4:00pm Tuition $30 (Gadsden Art Center, 13 N. The genre of Southern Vernacular Art began in the 1930s but has been slow to receive recognition by art historians and collectors.

Until recently, the genre was marginalized as “folk” or “outsider” art because the artists were self-taught and/or African American, living in isolated rural or urban areas, and making art from found materials. “Vernacular Art” refers to the expressive power of the work to capture the language and culture of the area in which it was created. This class will coincide with the FOUND exhibition at the Gadsden Arts Center & Museum (January–April 2017) and will explore Florida artists and other major artists of the genre– their histories, stories, messages and unique artistic styles–and how their works came into the mainstream art world, leading to a monumental shift in the historical classification of the work in the annals of art history. Mobility Requirement: Class will be held on the 2nd Floor of the Gadsden Arts Center & Museum, accessible via elevator and stairs and will include guided tours of the exhibition on the 1st and 2nd Floor - bench seating available in galleries. The History and Culture of Theater in Syria and the Arab World (NEW) Riad Matkaloon, Adjunct Professor, FSU Thursdays, 6:00pm - 8:00pm (Room #214, Pepper Center, FSU Campus)

This course will focus on the Syrian role in what is termed as “Nahadda” (Renaissance) in the Arab world. Topics will include art, music, religions, food, literature and languages, modern politics and history, as well as the geopolitical significance of Syria and its vital role in human civilizations through history. Hollywood Lessons and Logistics: Production Behind the Scenes (NEW) Andi Isaacs, Retired Executive Vice President and Head of Physical Production Summit Entertainment Tuesdays, 11:30am - 1:30pm Tuition $55 (Broad Auditorium, Pepper Center, FSU Campus)

Andi Isaacs has worked on more than 80 films in the past 30 years, in every state and in 22 countries.

This class will view and discuss three of her favorite productions, allowing for discussion both before and after each viewing. Isaacs will discuss the how, where and why the films were made the way they were, as well as talk about how films are produced in general, from greenlighting to distribution. Two of the films that will be viewed are Anna and the King, which was filmed in Malaysia, and RED, produced with a cast of incredible actors with a budget stretched to the limit. For the third film the class will vote to choose either There’s Something About Mary -- a movie that broke the mold for future comedies -- or Twilight, the worldwide phenomenon that broke box office records and millions of teenage hearts. Class size limit: 110.

How Titian Created Modern Art (NEW) Tobias Mostel, Adjunct Professor of English and Humanities, TCC; also Visiting Scholar in Art History and Music, FSU Tuesdays, 9:00am - 10:30am Tuition $45 (Room #214, Pepper Center, FSU Campus)

Western art changed forever during Titian’s lifetime. This change is obvious in his paintings. The course will demonstrate the state of Western art before and during Titian’s life, the change he introduced, how he painted at the end of his life, the works of his followers, Tintoretto, El Greco and others down to the 19th century. The course will then ascribe to Titian’s change, the facts of how modern art looks, and why it looks that way. The course will speculate about why Titian changed, since there is no surviving evidence other than his paintings. However, after Titian died, Europe itself changed and that has everything to do with the increasing power of Titian’s innovation.

That innovation became the subject matter of 20th century art and continues to be a most important factor in contemporary art.

This is a six-week survey course of Buddhist traditions in India, South Asia, China, and Japan, with a focus on premodern periods. Topics covered include Buddhist history, doctrine, ethical beliefs and practice. This course begins with some foundational concepts in Buddhism and moves on to its transmission to South and East Asia and Tibet. Some of the questions and issues explored in this course include: Is Buddhism a homogeneous tradition? Is it a religion? What is its relationship with various cultures and political institutions? Music, Society, & Protest: Anti Establishment Voices in Popular Music Styles (NEW) Brad Rohrer, Program Associate, College of Music, FSU Tuesdays, 2:00pm - 4:00pm Tuition $55 (Room #214, Pepper Center, FSU Campus)

This class seeks to demonstrate the motivation behind music styles and/or musicians within particular styles that run against the grain of mainstream culture. Many musicians’ political and social commentary can be directed at singular phenomena like war and racism.

Other critiques are the product of long-term societal norms developed over a generation or more. In these sessions, we will discuss lyrics, imagery, cultural context, and sonic quality of styles such as folk revival, psychedelic rock, punk, rap, hip-hop, “alternative” rock and dance music. We will examine the genesis of these styles and follow the thread of anti-establishment tendencies over the course of time.

Robert Redford: The Director (NEW) Andi Isaacs, Retired Executive Vice President and Head of Physical Production Summit Entertainment Wednesdays, 11:30am - 1:30pm Tuition $55 (Broad Auditorium, Pepper Center, FSU Campus)

In the past 57 years Robert Redford has produced 48 films and acted in 79. Yet in spite of winning the Academy Award for Best Director for his first film at the helm, he has only directed 10 movies in his career. This class will view and discuss three films directed by Redford from different decades, allowing for discussion both before and after each viewing. We will compare and contrast each film, discuss Redford’s growth as a director, as well as, his strengths and weaknesses. The films viewed will be Ordinary People, which won both Best Picture and Best Director; Quiz Show, an Academy contender; and finally Lions for Lambs, a critically acclaimed film that did not capture the Academy or public’s attention. Andi Isaacs worked with Mr. Redford on the production of Quiz Show and will share her anecdotes and insights about the man and the movie. Class size limit: 110.

Comic books are our modern-day mythology. Whether it’s Odysseus, Hercules, Beowulf, Wonder Woman, Thor or Superman, the heroes all represent great warriors battling the demons and dragons of their day. This course will give learners a history of a truly indigenous American art form. In this course, we will cover the rise of superheroes chronologically and thematically. We are also going to look at the creators, the artists, writers, and publishers who began and grew the American comic book industry. This course will demonstrate how comic books reflect decades of American history, including major events of the 20th and 21st centuries. Comic books also have a rich cultural history in the US and have been politically and culturally stigmatized over the years. We will explore these external political struggles that shaped the industry as well. We will explore, discuss and have fun reading comic book stories together. Excelsior!

The American South, for at least half of the 20th century, was the exotic “other” in American culture. As my friend, FSU Professor Bill Rogers, used to say, it was “a nation within a nation,” with its own history (defeat and poverty), its own music (country, jazz, the Blues) and its own literature. This class will trace the history of Southern literature from roughly the end of World War I up through the 1960s and possibly beyond. Each week, I will spend roughly the first half of the class talking about the author(s), his or her life, themes in his or works, and why he or she is important. During the second half of the class, we will discuss one of the works listed on that week’s suggested readings. Most of these (I hope) are available on the internet; if they are not, I will scan them as PDFs and e-mail them to everybody. Suggested reading can be viewed online. Class size limit: 58.

Contrasting and comparing architectural and urban examples in both Cuba and Florida, the course explores Hispanic aesthetic and stylistic ideals as a continuous creative reservoir of ideas. Class size limit: 110.

Survival French for Travelers Francoise Meynier, French teacher, Alliance Francaise of Tallahassee Mondays, 2:00pm - 4:00pm (Room #TBA, Pepper Center, FSU Campus)

The goal of the this class is to facilitate the immersion and cultural experience of people interested in traveling to a French-speaking country. This class focuses on situations that you will most likely encounter when traveling: meeting people, catching a train, shopping or ordering in a restaurant, as well as some cultural information and other useful travel tips. With a combination of pronunciation, grammar, free conversation and role play, you will acquire the needed language tools to feel more confident speaking French and interacting with the locals. Class size limit: 17.

Traditional Celtic Music and Dance (NEW) Aisha Ivey, PhD Candidate, College of Music Wednesdays, 11:30am - 1:30pm

This course will explore traditional Irish and Scottish songs, tunes and dances. We will listen to notable musicians in the traditions and discuss instrumentation, regional styles and musical forms. The close relationship between music and dance will be discussed, and we will look at how Irish and Scottish dances have influenced American square dances and clogging. We will delve into the style ourselves, learning some of the repertoire and singing and playing it together. Adventurous students can learn a simple Scottish country dance if they wish. There won’t be any required homework or outside reading, but, hopefully, students will be so inspired by the class that they are motivated to learn more on their own. No musical experience is necessary and music will be taught by ear. If you have an instrument, please bring it. We will have fun in a relaxed environment while enjoying some beautiful music together! Class size limit: 30.

Viva Verdi! (3-Week Class on 3/2, 3/9 and 3/23) (NEW) Ruth Ruggles Akers, Adjunct Professor of Musicology, FSU Thursdays, 2:00pm - 4:00pm (Broad Auditorium, Pepper Center, FSU Campus)

Verdi’s first successful opera was Nabucco (1842), whose subject is the Jewish exile in Babylon.

Verdi had to be wary of censorship in his Austrian-controlled country, Italy, where patriots would have identified with the opera’s subject. The Risorgimento (Resurgence) hoped to unify Italy by naming Victor Emmanuel II King of Italy, and they used Verdi’s name as an acronym for “Vittorio Emmanuele, rè d’Italia,” shouting “Viva Verdi!” at his opera performances. In 1874 Verdi incorporated his operatic flair in Requiem, a Catholic Mass for the Dead. Seventy years later Verdi’s music again made a political statement when prisoners at the concentration camp Terezín performed the Requiem in defiance of the Nazis. In addition to the Verdi Requiem, this class will explore Oliver Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, which premiered at a Nazi prison camp in 1942. Both works will be performed in Tallahassee for Holocaust Education Week, on March 20 (Messiaen) and 25 (Verdi). Class size limit: 110.

SCIENCE, HEALTH & FITNESS All About Trees Stan Rosenthal, University of Florida-IFAS Extension Forestry Agent Emeritus and Forester with Big Bend Forestry Thursdays, 2:00pm - 4:00pm Tuition $55 (The Chapel, Allegro Senior Living Community)

If you have ever thought about the wonderment and beauty of a tree, or just have an interest in what science knows about how trees work, then this class should prove very enjoyable. In this class Stan Rosenthal, University of Florida Extension Forestry Agent Emeritus, along with Sam Hand, FAMU Extension Faculty, will give instructional insights into trees, including some hands-on demonstrations for you to experience about trees. For this course, as you learn about the science of trees, you will also begin to understand how they work. You will also learn how to identify them, how to protect them and how to take care of them. This knowledge will help you to keep your trees as an asset, rather than having them become unhealthy or a liability because of neglect or inappropriate cultural practices. Songbirds have provided fascination and comfort throughout human history, an audible reminder of the joy of spring, and a potent source of artistic inspiration. However, due to these birds’ small size and aerial lifestyle – a life lived within human earshot, but largely out of eyeshot – the origins and meanings of their songs have remained elusive until recently. Using the zebra finch as an exemplar, this course explores birdsong at social, acoustic, behavioral, neural and computational levels of analysis. Students will gain a new appreciation for the beauty and science of birdsong, and the ways that studies of birdsong broaden scientific understanding of our own (human) ability to speak and sing. Learn how to view the night sky over Tallahassee in the Downtown Digital Dome planetarium at the Challenger Learning Center. You will learn how to use a telescope and go in your backyard, and with the naked eye, binoculars and/or a telescope, identify the current constellations as well as those that will be seen in other seasons due to the technology provided by the dome. Learn the ancient myths associated with constellations, how the stars relate to the calendar, identify Messier objects. You will be able to use a solar telescope and a sunspotter. Planetarium shows will be offered such as Exploding Universe and Black Holes. Participate in activities to facilitate understanding of various astronomical phenomena. Class size limit: 35

Functional foods are foods that not only contain the traditional nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber, but also contain bioactive food components (also known as phytochemicals). As such, they provide health benefits that extend beyond meeting basic nutrition needs. Functional foods may be used to maintain overall good health, prevent disease, and/or manage and treat disease. This course will provide an understanding of how many different functional foods, such as fruits, vegetables, eggs, etc., can affect health outcomes in older adults and in regards to disease states such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and osteoarthritis. We will use current and previous research to present the role of functional foods in human health. Class size limit: 30.

This class will look at the history, facts and myths associated with grief and loss. It will explore the connection between religion and death and offer tips for preparing final wishes. (If participants are interested, there will be time to complete a personal ‘death’ packet .)

The class will offer discussions on the differences between grief and trauma and look at changes throughout the lifespan as they relate to loss. Mostly, the class will try to remind the participants to find joy and exquisite moments in each day. Class size limit: 110.

In geriatric medical care the issue is not what we can do but what we should do. A new movement in medicine is “Right Care” -- the use of evidence-based medicine and the patient’s goals and values to drive medical decision-making. This course will address many common conditions in medicine and look at how the twin problems in geriatric care -- undertreatment and overtreatment -- can be solved. In this course, we will look at a variety of healthy movement practices and the importance of caring for the aging body. The content of the course is focused on learning about different somatic practices that facilitate correct alignment of the body, improve flexibility and range of motion, promote overall health and wellness, and offer lifelong healthy movement patterns. Topics in this course include Brain-Body-Balance, Brain Dance, Gyrokinesis and Be Moved ® principles. We will practice each of these modalities during a onehour exploratory practice session after a thirty-minute lecture. Join fellow members for a monthly discussion of books that run the gamut from fiction, non-fiction, biographies, to extended essays.

Club members select the books and discussions are led by an OLLI member, author, or invited speaker. Titles and brief descriptions of selections for Spring 2017 follow. Choose to attend the mid-day or the afternoon meeting; both groups discuss the same book, except with different facilitators. Usually we meet the 2nd Wednesday, January through June, but members are notified by email of any changes. January The Devil’s Highway by Luis Alberto Urrea (Non-Fiction) This is filled with intense investigative reporting about what went wrong when a group of 26 men attempted to cross the Mexican border into the desert of southern Arizona in May, 2001; only twelve men survived. A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2005, The Devil’s Highway, while at times painful to read, is riveting and timely.

February The Washingtons: George and Martha, Join’d by Friendship, Crown’d by Love by Flora Fraser (Non-Fiction) Questions abound about George and Martha: Did they love each other, or was their marriage simply a union of ‘agreeable partners’?

When she married George Washington, Martha Dandridge Custis was a widow with two small children and a large amount of land, on which there were many enslaved people.

An accomplished biographer, the author includes interesting descriptions of the social and political life of the American colonies.

March Secondhand Sister by Rhett DeVane (Fiction) Mary Ester – 3 failed marriages, a series of dead-end jobs – tries to donate a kidney to her dying mother, only to learn Loretta B Day is not her biological mother. After Loretta dies and Hurricane Katrina destroys her home, Mary Ester seeks out the small hospital (in Quincy) where she was born to try to solve the mystery of her birth. She meets up with all the trappings of a small community and its ‘less than welcoming’ attitudes. With its North Florida setting, this book proves to be a fun and interesting read. The author will lead our discussion.

April The Hemingses of Monticello by Annette Gordon-Reed (Non-Fiction) This epic work tells the story of the Hemingses, whose close blood ties to our third president had been systematically expunged from American history until quite recently. The author traces the Hemings family from its origins in Virginia in the 1700s to the family’s dispersal after Thomas Jefferson’s death in 1826. It sets the family’s compelling saga against the backdrop of Revolutionary America and plantation life at Monticello.

May Boston Girl by Anita Diamant (Fiction) This book tells the story of a scrappy immigrant girl born at the turn of the last century. Our heroine is Addie Baum of Boston, now in her eighties telling her life story to her twenty-something granddaughter. And what a life it was: Addie survived very traditional parents, world wars, abusive men and a flu epidemic to become a woman with a voice and a life of her own. Reading this book feels like lazing away an afternoon with a beloved aging relative paging through a family scrapbook.

June Clara and Mr. Tiffany by Susan Vreeland (Fiction) This historical fiction is a great read on several levels - women in the workplace, the beauty and the crafting of Tiffany creations, New York City in the early 1900s. At the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, Louis Tiffany makes his debut, but behind the scenes - and never recognized for her contributions - Clara conceives and designs all of the iconic leaded glass lamps for which Tiffany will long be remembered. The novel also delves prophetically into the issues surrounding the women’s suffragette movement in the early 20th century.

OLLI Spanish Club meets every Thursday at the Pool Clubhouse of Westminster Oaks at 10:30am, except for the last Thursday of the month when we meet at a different Hispanic restaurant to enjoy lunch and learning in a stimulating venue! We practice our conversation skills in Espanol. The object of our fun get-together is to speak as much Espanol as possible, thereby learning vocabulary, correct pronunciation and the culture of our Hispanic neighbors. Friendship Force International

FFI expands our members’ travel opportunities and offers a rewarding way of meeting new people. We can explore new countries and cultures through FFI’s signature program of home hospitality. Additionally, OLLI members can serve as hosts to welcome domestic and international visitors into our community. Men’s Group

The Men’s Group meets every two weeks to discuss common issues and challenges faced by older men, to share each others’ knowledge and expertise on a range of topics, and to socialize in an informal environment. As additional men show interest, more groups, not to exceed 10-12 members each, will be formed.

Group meetings are self-directed. Responsibility for facilitating discussions is generally rotated among the participating members.

NEW! OLLI Paddlers

The group meets on the rivers, streams, lakes, and bays of North Florida. We focus our paddling on the local ecology, wildlife, natural beauty, and culture of each venue. We schedule Friday outings during the class term and continue paddling after the end of the semester when we can. We try to incorporate an opportunity to socialize and debrief over lunch in a local restaurant or a picnic during or after each trip. Members supply their own equipment.

Trips generally call for a some experience and participants should know kayaking basics and be able to paddle for several hours at a stretch. For more information, contact Michael Lampman at lampmanm@icloud.com.

NEW! Save the Planet Club

Join us for lunch and become inspired to make better, healthier food choices. Plus, have fun socializing and discussing how we can transition to a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle. We hope to raise awareness of the environmental, ethical, and health impacts of our food choices. We meet once a month at a local restaurant to enjoy a delicious plant-based meal, and plan to schedule occasional cooking classes and potlucks. Travel Club

The OLLI Travel Club gives you the opportunity to enjoy the best our world has to offer at very reasonable prices. You travel with friends and enjoy well-planned trips. The Travel Club meets, usually with The Friendship Force International Club, to share information about upcoming trips and other travel opportunities. Walking Club

The OLLI Walking Club provides year-round opportunities for walkers of all fitness levels to keep moving and enrich friendships. Whether new to Tallahassee or a long-time resident, you’ll enjoy walking with us on paved and unpaved trails throughout the City of Tallahassee Parks and Recreation system. We have opportunities for both “gentle” or beginning walkers and intermediate to advanced walker/hikers. Some of our walks give us the opportunity to explore picturesque neighborhoods as well as the FSU campus. OLLI Walkers also participate in community walks and organize a hiking field trip each semester. Writers’ Group

The Writers’ Group meets the 2nd Monday of the month all year long (including summer). We meet at Westminster Oaks, 4449 Meandering Way, in the Pub Room in the Parry Building from 10am to Noon. Members share their writings and engage in writing exercises to improve their craft. Periodically, we have presentations and/or workshops by published authors. We all have stories just waiting to be written. Join us and let us help you get your story on paper.

Call for Class Hosts!

Have you ever thought about being a class host? If you’ve taken classes you’re aware that one of the important ways OLLI welcomes new and returning OLLI members is by having a host for each class. Being a class host gives you the opportunity to get to know your classmates and provide an important service to them. Class hosts greet students, make sure attendance lists are maintained, support instructors as needed, make announcements about coming OLLI events, opportunities and other news, distribute, collect class evaluations, and serve as a conduit for messages from students to OLLI leadership.

Instructors often need a hand with projectors, lights, microphones, computers and other audio/visual technology, and could use “technician” help. If you are interested or would like more information about volunteering as a host or a technician, email OLLIVols@gmail.com. Training for class hosts and technicians is scheduled for Thursday, February 16th immediately following New Member Welcome and Orientation.

Crawfordville, Florida native, Atari Timmons-Ross, works at the Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy as an Office Assistant and as the Business Associate for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. In 2014, she graduated with her B.A. in Sociology from the University of South Carolina and in 2015 she graduated from Walden University with her M.S. in Human Services/Family Studies and Interventions. Currently, she is working on another M.S. in Military Social Work. Atari is married to Army retiree and Veteran’s Services Director of Wakulla County, Harold Ross, and enjoys reading Amish fiction and volunteering with her church family to help those in need.

What is the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Florida State University? OLLI at FSU is a scholarly and exciting program of classes, activities and travel opportunities targeted to individuals 50 and older across North Florida who want to continue their education in a stress-free environment where there are no tests, no grades and no homework. OLLI at FSU is associated with the Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy and the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy. OLLI is funded through membership dues, class fees, support from the Bernard Osher Foundation and other agencies, as well as private donations.

How is OLLI managed? Management consists of a director (Debra Herman), program coordinator (Terry Aaronson), business associate (Atari Timmons-Ross) and webmaster (Stefanie Kiedrowski). The director is responsible for planning, administering and evaluating all activities related to the program and its operations within Florida State University’s guidelines as well as, responsibility for the program design, goals and procedures. The program coordinator is responsible for managing the daily operations of the program, including online registration, print and social media, as well as assisting in the development and implementation of program objectives. The business associate is responsible for following the university’s financial policies and procedures for the program. This includes ordering supplies, providing accounting data, reconciling accounts, ensuring payment for services, and working with instructors of OLLI at FSU. The webmaster is responsible for updating the OLLI website and social media. The concept of shared leadership between the professional staff and the members is a long-standing tradition. This shared leadership takes many forms, such as collaboration between staff and members on all committees, curriculum development and members providing administrative support.

What role do members play in the management of OLLI? OLLI at FSU is a member-centered organization that has a Volunteer Member Board. The board gives voice to the membership. Members, through committees, volunteer to create and manage a wide range of activities beyond classes, including special-interest clubs, field trips, cultural activities, social events and other activities and programs. All members are invited to participate in these activities.

How are classes selected? The Curriculum Committee, which consists of the director, program coordinator, member board president, first and second vice presidents, Westminster Oaks Member-at-large, the Curriculum Subject Committee Chair and other volunteers, meets each term to review proposals received from university and college faculty and community experts to determine the courses that match membership interests as determined through class evaluations and the annual member survey.

How do the staff and the board interact, and who is responsible for the long-term planning of the organization? Staff and board work together strategically to plan and provide the best quality programs and activities possible. There is a strategic plan in place, which is reviewed annually at the staff/board retreat.

How do members sign up for activities? Membership must always be purchased or placed in your cart before you can view the activity cart for purchasing. Registration for activities is open to all current OLLI members and is available when class registration begins. To register online go to www.olli.fsu.edu and select View Activities from the menu.

To sign up for an activity, you must be a member and you must be signed into you account.

What is the Guest Policy? Participation in OLLI at FSU classes, clubs and activities is a member benefit. A member may invite a guest (who is not a member) to lunches and dinners. Quantities of guest tickets may be limited and specified by event. Other activities such as day and overnight travel are for members only.

Additionally, a guest (who is not a member) may attend one OLLI lecture class or club meeting when accompanied by a member.

(Note: Some special lectures may be advertised as open to the public.) A member hosting a guest for a class or lecture must contact the OLLI director or staff for notification. A member who hosts a guest for a club must contact the club chair(s) in advance.

When classes and clubs have limited capacity, members have first preference over guests. Visiting OLLI members from other OLLI organizations are welcome to participate in OLLI at FSU activities when space allows and with payment of any fees due and the signing of a liability waiver.

How do I register for a class, especially those that have limited capacity? Registering for membership is always the first item to place into your “shopping cart” prior to selecting a class - unless you are a current member. If you have not added membership to your cart, your option to select a class or activity will not appear. You can create an OLLI account in advance without cost.

Therefore, when registration opens, selecting membership and then the classes (and activities) can be completed fairly quickly.

Remember, all classes have a maximum capacity. Lecture classes usually have a larger seating capacity, but some classes have very limited enrollment. If you are joining OLLI only for one particular class, it is recommended that you either look at the class online in advance to see how many seats are available or on registration day, place your membership into your cart first, and then look for the class in the course listing. When you check on the course you want and the cart does not appear, either the course is full (or your membership is not in your cart). At that point, you can sign out of your account and you will not be charged for membership. If you are taking other classes and joining activities or clubs, then you can add your name to the wait list if one is available and proceed to make payment for membership, courses and activities that you have registered for and check out. There is no charge for adding your name to the wait list. Purchase of Membership and Activities is non-refundable.

Can I attend a different section of a class for which I am registered or attend a class to find out if I want to register for it?

You must be registered for all classes you attend. This includes attending a different section of a class. If you would like to register, please contact the office before attending the class - or go to the OLLI website at www.olli.fsu.edu to register. You will be accommodated on a space-available basis. Sitting in on a class disrupts the experience for those students who are legitimately registered. Please respect your fellow students and instructors by not attending classes for which you are not registered. Please remember you cannot be a “guest” in another class if you are a member.

Where can I find biographical information about OLLI instructors? Biographies of all instructors who are teaching in the current term can be found online in the class description section. Simply place your cursor over the name of the instructor as it appears in the box and the biography will appear in a pop-up window.

Where Can I Park for OLLI Classes?

If you are taking a Spring 2017 OLLI class during the hours of 9am - 4pm on the FSU Campus, you may wish to purchase a pass for $35 that will allow FSU Campus you to park in the Macomb/ Call Street Garage located at Pepper Center the corner of Macomb and Call 636 W. Registration begins on Tuesday, January 31 at www.olli.fsu.edu. If you do not have an OLLI account, you can create one, free of charge, prior to the registration date.

COST: Individual Semester membership is $60 per person. Class fees range from $25 to $60. Activity fees vary. If you purchased an Annual Membership this past fall please do not purchase a membership for this semester.

If you are not a current member you must first select the “Membership” category and choose Semester Membership in order to register for classes and activities. If you are brand new to OLLI and want to become a MEMBER, please go to the OLLI at FSU website and select Registration to create an account. If you have an account and would like to purchase a membership on January 31st or later, select Registration and sign in using your password and username. If you have forgotten either your password or username, you may reset them online or call the OLLI offices for assistance. Once you have signed in you will be on the Course Catalog page. Please select Semester listed under the “Membership” heading and select “Add to Cart.”

If you want to purchase a CLASS please select “Return to Course Catalog.” You can either look for a class by Subject Area or “All Classes” as listed under the “Classes” heading. What is your refund policy? Cancellation Policy: In the event a class has to be canceled, every attempt will be made to notify you prior to the beginning of class. You will receive a full refund for any class that OLLI must cancel. Withdrawal/Refund Policy: To withdraw from a class, please notify the OLLI administration office, 850-645-9650. If you want to withdraw from a course and want a refund, please make your request by the end of the first week of class. Class fees will not be refunded after the first week. If you withdraw from one class you will be assessed a $10 fee. If you withdraw from all of your classes you will be assessed a $25 fee. No-shows forfeit their course fee. Membership fees and Activity fees are non-refundable. If you are joining OLLI for one class only, ensure there are seats available before you pay for membership. Please do not purchase membership when the class is unavailable for purchase.
