CREATIVE THOUGHT MATTERS

WE HAVE AN ALTOGETHER DIFFERENT WAY OF DOING THINGS.

And it starts with our commitment to creative thought. Not just in the arts, but in science, business, economics, the humanities, and every other endeavor.

Eli Smith ’25, an international affairs and French double major from Greene, Maine, and Sara Powers ’25, a computer science major with a geoscience minor from Worcester, Massachusetts, are general managers of WSPN, ranked among the top ten college radio stations by The Princeton Review

CREATIVITY IN ACTION.

At Skidmore, we prepare you for a rapidly changing world by combining rigorous academics with inventive problem-solving. Here, you’ll learn to think differently — connecting ideas, tackling challenges, and building the skills to succeed in careers that exist today ... and those you’ll create tomorrow.

“Skidmore allowed me to pursue science and dance, while most other colleges would have forced me to choose between my two passions. I was also able to study abroad — a dream of mine — as part of the London First-Year Experience. Skidmore truly encouraged me to do it all!”

NSF Graduate Research Fellow and Ph.D. candidate in the Shea Lab, Penn State University

GO AHEAD, DO BOTH.

Here, passion meets practicality. Be yourself, explore your interests, and work with an advisor to craft a custom path. Whether you focus on one discipline, combine fields, or create something entirely new, our flexible curriculum builds essential skills for success – whether you’re pursuing math, music, or both.

Get outside. Train your brain or calm your thoughts. Our location is a destination for both recreation and research. Photo by Amanda Brooks.

JOIN OUR COMMUNITY OF INDIVIDUALS.

How do you describe the Skidmore culture?

It’s a place where individuality thrives, collaboration outweighs competition, diverse voices are celebrated and respected, and both your professors and your friends cheer you on from the audience, auditorium, and bleachers.

2,700 students from 44 states/ territories and 65 countries

OUR TRADITIONS

Feel the vibe. Experience altogether different, all-around celebrations of all things Skidmore.

BIG GREEN SCREAM

About 1,200 raucous spectators show off their T-Bred spirit as they pack the Williamson Sports Center for back-to-back men’s and women’s basketball games.

UJIMA

The annual Ujima Fashion Show is run entirely by students and supports the student club’s mission of celebrating awareness of African, African American, and Caribbean cultures. While every year is unique, each show highlights students’ talent and creativity, from design to performance.

SKIDMANIA

Every fall, student and faculty musicians offer their own interpretations of some of the most popular songs from 50 years ago. The concerts quickly sell out, and proceeds support community organizations.

CLUB FAIR

The Student Government Association Club Fairis one of our biggest, and most loved, campus events. Part festival and part registration fair, this biannual tradition is full-on fun as nearly 100 clubs audition for your participation.

ROOMMATE

Hang a Matisse, Dali, or Picasso above your bed! That is, if you get in line in time. Each year, students camp out overnight to be the first to pick from 75 works in the Tang Teaching Museum available to borrow and hang in their dorm or apartment.

CHICKEN FINGER FRIDAYS

Students, professors, and staff line up every Friday to dine together on chicken fingers (or plant-based nuggets) and fries — a simple yet savory tradition that brings people together and spans the Skidmore generations.

PACK THE RINK

Skidmore Hockey’s opening weekend celebration draws hundreds of fans for a great game, contests, and prizes (who doesn’t like free T-shirts?) while supporting the Skidmore Cares food drive with donations of canned goods.

leads trips locally and afar throughout the year to foster love for the outdoors.

Skidmore’s Outing Club

You won’t find Greek life here. And we’re proud of that. Instead, our inclusive, creative, and independent clubs run on student ideas, passions, and connections. And when you bond from the heart, the networking is lifelong.

Go ahead, call the alum who ran the radio station in 1972. They’d love to swap playlists and talk careers.

A

CAMPUS

With award-winning dining and outstanding residence options, an amazing college town, and 1,200 acres of natural beauty to enjoy, there’s lots of ground to cover.

Scribner Library

The North Woods: Walk, run, hike, or simply connect with nature on 150 acres of trails and woodlands that also serve as Skidmore’s outdoor laboratory.

Janet Kinghorn Bernhard Theater (JKB): Our theater major is preprofessional in nature, and JKB offers a 350-seat auditorium, an experimental black box theater, rehearsal studios, and costume and scene shops.

Billie Tisch Center for Integrated Sciences (BTCIS): Cutting-edge laboratories and technology make BTCIS a premier place for discovering connections between the sciences, arts, and humanities.

Arthur Zankel Music Center: Check it out if you’re into Grammy-winning artists, digital recording studios, or state-ofthe-art concert halls.

HOME IS WHERE YOU CREATE IT.

Residential life is an essential part of the Skidmore experience and the heart of our tight-knit community.

90 % of students live on campus

Residence halls are suite-style — a few rooms linked together by a bathroom — and house students of all years. First-year students can expect one or two roommates. Special interest options are available too, including buildings and floors that are substance-free, quiet, gender-inclusive, and more.

Our sought-after student apartment complexes, Northwoods Village and Sussman Village, house mostly seniors. Each apartment has a furnished common area including a fully equipped kitchen, plus laundry facilities in each building.

Murray-Aikins Dining Hall

LET’S EAT.

At Skidmore, we get creative with your dining experience too.

Murray-Aikins Dining Hall offers freshly prepared menu items and à la carte offerings ranging from vegan to international. We go trayless to cut down on food waste, and we get maximum seasonal use of veggies from our campus garden.

From weekly Chicken Finger Fridays to themed meals inspired by the likes of Harry Potter and Game of Thrones, our award-winning chefs and the staff at “D-Hall” provide unmatched variety. And if you live in a residence hall, you’ll have unlimited meal swipes!

Need to grab and go? Head over to The Spa in Case Center. Pick from sushi, the salad bar, the deli counter, their famous egg sandwiches, or hot specials and soups. Out on the town late? The Spa is also open until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays (the mozzarella sticks are *chef’s kiss*).

When we say “award-winning chefs,” we mean it. Skidmore’s Dining Services team has won seven American Culinary Federation gold medals for culinary excellence.

SUSTAINABILITY

From our own solar field to courses, internships, and student-led projects, we’re testing and modeling creative solutions for a more sustainable society.

In recent years, our Community Garden has produced over 7,000 pounds of organic food for use by Dining Services. Skidmore’s Hoop House, shown above, is an extension of the Garden dedicated to growing winter greens such as kale and spinach.

47% of campus is geothermally heated and cooled, including the new Billie Tisch Center for Integrated Sciences and McCaffery-Wagman Tennis & Wellness Center.

20% of campus electricity is generated by our solar field and hydroelectric dam. We’ve also cut 53% of our greenhouse gas emissions since 2000.

140,000 pounds of food waste have been saved from the landfill through Skidmore’s student-run composting programs.

ZAZIE BEETZ ’13

is a prolific actress starring in FX’s Atlanta (for which she received a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award), Marvel’s Deadpool 2, Warner Bros.’ Joker, and a Jay-Z-produced western called The Harder They Fall. As an international student from Germany who grew up in Washington Heights, Beetz majored in French and explored acting and photography at Skidmore. “With Skidmore’s education, I was able to honor huge parts of myself,” she explains. “I suppose that’s the beauty of a liberal arts school.” As for her future acting gigs, she says, “I want to be able to transform as I transform in my life.”

SHEP MURRAY ’93

is a retail maverick and co-founder of Vineyard Vines, the lifestyle apparel line he founded with his brother Ian from a beachside pop-up, selling neckties from the trunk of a car. Today, the playful upscale brand is among the most popular in the country. The brothers’ unique business model eschews traditional marketing and distribution methods, which may explain why Vineyard Vines has thrived while much of the retail industry has been in chaos. Murray, whose goal has always been to be “a cross between Warren Buffett and Jimmy Buffett,” concurs, arguing that what’s happening in retail now is not about evolution. “It’s a revolution.”
