A Letter from the Executive Director

At Ski and Snowboard Club Vail, we are truly fortunate to be part of something larger than ourselves - inspiring the next generation of youth. It is always uplifting when I hear from current and former Ski and Snowboard Club Vail athletes and parents regarding the extraordinary impact that SSCV has had on them — not only during but also after their time at SSCV. I am honored to work with an organization that enables these lifetime experiences that forever impact everyone involved.

Greatness in all walks of life — whether in athletics, academics, the workplace, and even interpersonal relationships — comes from the inner strength and resilience needed to push oneself beyond one’s limits. This level of development is only possible with world-class coaches who can utilize our extraordinary facilities to help create the skills required for each athlete to reach their full on-snow potential – alongside cultivating the character traits needed to work hard and push themselves beyond their comfort zone to be their best both on and off snow.

SSCV must achieve its $700,000 Annual Campaign goal to attract and retain exceptional coaches across all age levels who possess the skills needed to have

this extraordinary impact on our athletes. I hope you find the quotes from former SSCV athletes, see below, an inspiration for you to please support SSCV’s 2023-2024 Annual Campaign.

I sincerely appreciate your consideration of support for the 2023-2024 Annual Campaign. With your involvement, continued success lies ahead for SSCV athletes. Your generosity is critical and meaningful in supporting their lifelong trajectory!

We are looking forward to a great 2023-2024 season!

Sincerely,

Adam and Kristin Pena | Owners of Rocket Fizz

Adam and Kristin Pena opened their first Rocket Fizz in Breckenridge in November of 2019, and closed in April 2020 due to the pandemic. Because of the support of the mountain community, they were able to weather the storm and reopen their Breckenridge store, as well as grow the business enough to open a second store July 2020 in Lionshead Village.

Steadfast University of Alabama supporters, Adam and Kristin follow “The Process” laid out by Alabama coach, Nick Saban, and one of the tenants of “The Process” is giving back and making an impact. With that in mind, Rocket Fizz has made a substantial commitment to Ski & Snowboard Club Vail to create and support the new Ski & Snowboard Club Vail’s Mental Health and Wellness Program. This contribution will help create programs and resources

ALPINE

A Letter from the Director

Bradley Wall Season Highlights

What an incredible year we had. SSCV was a dominant force across all age categories this year, qualifying more athletes than any other club for all major championships from U10 to U18, including World Junior Championships. There were many individual standout performances with multiple championship titles, including a three-way tie for first place at the U12 championships, the first time I have ever witnessed such a feat! Behind the scenes, alpine made great strides in creating an inclusive environment of belonging. We are blessed with tremendous facilities, but they require constant maintenance. This year, we created volunteer opportunities for parents to come on the hill and help maintain the b-net. It was a tremendous success and hugely helpful to our coaching staff. Undoubtedly, the biggest benefits came through the gained appreciation for the amount of work required and the shared experience between parents and coaches. Thanks for a wonderful year, here’s to a bigger and better 23/24 season.

2 New US Ski Team Nominations

Hunter Salani and Liv Moritz have been named to the Development Team for the 23/24 season. Recent SSCV athletes make up 1/3 of the total Development Team across both men and women.

16 Athletes Qualified for U18 Nationals

SSCV had more qualified athletes representing its program than any other program in the US.

19 Top Ten Finishes at U16 Nationals

Our U16 athletes had an impressive showing at U16 Nationals with 19 top ten finishes.

36 Athletes Qualified for U14 Championships

86% of our U14 athletes qualified to compete at U14 Championships.

Tremendous Growth at Grass Roots Programming

The grassroots programming has experienced remarkable growth, with both the Age Class Prep and Future Stars programs currently having wait lists.

Story of Impact

SSCV has impacted my career in many ways, this was my second year qualifying for WJC and my first year qualifying I was at Ski & Snowboard Club Vail.

During all my years at Ski Club I had some of the best coaches in the world, all the coaches I had I really connected well with and they always helped me in so many ways. One amazing opportunity I got from Ski & Snowboard Club Vail was receiving financial support on a lot of my trips and races. Ski & Snowboard Club Vail takes huge pride in helping the athletes who need financial support for racing and traveling all over the world. I was fortunate enough to have a donor that supported me during my big trips, these big trips resulted in huge steps in my career. Without the help of donors and the Club I would not be where I am today. Looking back at my time at Ski & Snowboard Club Vail I have started to appreciate more and more everyday how much it has helped me become the skier I am today.

FREERIDE

A Letter from the Head Coach

Matt Luczkow

The Freeride Team had a successful 22/23 season, competing nationally and internationally at prestigious venues like Crested Butte, Snowbird, Crystal Mountain, and Kappl, Austria. We had many wins and podiums at all event levels and took the top spot for the season for the U19 men’s category. The Vail Freeride event on Lover’s Leap was a success thanks to our many parent volunteers. Our team is lucky to have a venue like Vail to train on during the week, allowing us to ski plentiful powder with the mountain seemingly to ourselves. We are also fortunate to travel to so many beautiful and interesting locations globally. With a Junior Worlds champion and a North American champion in our alumni, the SSCV Freeride team is proving to be one of the elite teams in North America.

Ash Postigo-Hassin won the Copper National event and the Telluride and Vail Regional events in his first year in the U15 division.

Freeride is the fastest growing junior ski discipline in North America

The Freeride discipline is the fastest growing segment of junior competitive skiing in North America and the SSCV Freeride Team reflects this in its growth in athlete numbers in the last 5 years.

7

Story of Impact

I joined the SSCV freeride team when I was 13, after having lived in Indiana my whole life and skiing no more than a couple of weeks a season. I was a novice skier, lacking strength and skill, and with no experience in freeride terrain or on cliffs or jumps. That first season, I finished last in nearly every competition. However, I have made huge strides in each of my five seasons with SSCV since then, improving my strength, technique, and competition results by great measure each year, culminating this past season when I won multiple National-level competitions and finished 4th overall in North America for my age group. This striking progression was only possible because of the opportunities that SSCV provided. SSCV offered countless days and hours spent training on snow, the effort of the best coaches in the world, and time spent chasing more skilled teammates, all of which allowed me to fulfill my potential as a freeride skier. I also had the opportunity to travel to

numerous competitions in places such as Canada, Alaska, and Chile, gaining valuable life and competition experience through these trips.

In addition to enabling me to improve my athletic skills, SSCV fostered my commitment and discipline through a system in which dedication and effort are encouraged and rewarded. I gained courage and confidence as my skiing progressed, while also being given the opportunity to get out of my comfort zone in other ways, transitioning from a shy, quiet girl who was afraid to talk to anyone to having made some of my best friends through this club. I will carry the experiences and skills that SSCV has given me, athletic and otherwise, throughout my life.

FREESKI

A Letter from the Head Coach

The 2022/23 season was full of great success from our athletes and one of our best overall seasons. Our NorAm team was the largest in the country with a total of 14 athletes competing at one of our highest levels of competitions. These athletes continued to make finals and get on podiums, while performing under a very busy, stressful, but rewarding season. Marley Leavitt, Liam Brogden, and Elaina Krusiewski were all named to the USA Team for Junior Worlds in New Zealand for Halfpipe, Slopestyle, and Big Air. Our senior athlete Matthew Labaugh got nominated to the US Freeski Team for Rookie Halfpipe Team. My favorite part about each season is the day to day and riding around with all of the athletes while we have a great time doing what we all love. Us coaches are blessed to have such a great team of athletes and parents helping us make it such a fantastic season.

Season Highlights

Largest NorAm team in US

SSCV had the largest NorAm team of athletes than any other Freeski Park and Pipe club this season with a total of 14 athletes. We also continued our growth of competitors at Futures Tour events. We will surpass this number this season by almost double for Futures Tour athletes.

Matt LaBaugh named to the 22/23 US Freeski Team

Matt Labaugh earned a spot on the 2022-2023 US Freeski Team, securing qualifications for Halfpipe, Slopestyle, and Big Air. He now joins the exclusive list of only two other American freeskiers in the history of the sport to achieve this feat.

2 SSCV Athletes Competed in World Cup

Nathaniel Bourgoin and Marley Leavitt competed on the Freeski Halfpipe World Cup circuit this season with a total of 6 World Cup starts.

3 Junior World Athletes

Elaina Krusiewski, Liam Brogden, and Marley Leavitt were nominated to the USA Junior World Freeski Team. Elaina Krusiewski placed 8th in Big Air with an awesome top-10 finish at Junior Worlds.

Logan Parham | Freeski Park & Pipe

My name is Logan Parham and I am in the SSCV Freeski Park & Pipe Team.

My family lives in Edwards, Colorado and since my parents are both avid skiers, they signed me up for the SSCV Big Mountain Team when I was 9 years old. With the Big Mountain Team, every now and then, we would swing by the rail and jump park and I soon realized that I enjoyed that more than any other kind of skiing. The next winter, I joined the Freeski Park & Pipe Team and loved every minute of it. Now, I have been on the Team for 6 years and I can’t imagine my life without my teammates, coaches, and my training. I have been fortunate to travel all over the world with the Team for training and competitions. I have been to Austria, New Zealand, Canada, Vermont, Mammoth, North Star, Utah, and Mt Hood with the Team. Training and competing have taught me a

lot about perseverance, effort, consistency, and focusing on the small steps to achieve my long term goals. My coaches and teammates have become a part of my close circle of friends and family and I know they are always there to support me.

Winning and podiums have taught me that my efforts are well worth it, but I have also learned to get back up and keep trying when my results have not been great. Coping with the ups and downs of sports, are teaching me some good life lessons. Ski and Snowboard Club Vail has been a huge influence in my life and I am very grateful for it.

A Letter from the Director

MOGULS

The SSCV Mogul Team excelled from Development to the World Cup this year. Our men’s team dominated the Rocky Mountain Region on the RQS tour and achieved 5 top-10 places at Regional Championships. Ava Keenan and Jiah Cohen secured age class wins at Junior Nationals, leading to 9 SSCV athletes being named to USSS’s Project Gold Team. We will also have 3 SSCV athletes competing at the 2024 Youth Olympic Games. SSCV Alumni and returning US Team athletes Tess Johnson, Liz Lemley, Kai Owens, and Dylan Walczyk continue to excel on the World Cup stage.

SSCV hosted the NBS Classic during Black Ski Week 2023, where U13 phenom Ava Keenan won the dual event. The NBS sponsors RMF’s NBS Grand Prix Scholarship program, spearheaded by SSCV Director John Dowling, with over $30k in athlete scholarships annually.

Thanks to SSCV leadership and supporters, anticipating another exciting ski season ahead!

John Dowling Season Highlights

11

Story of Impact

Jameson Kust | Mogul High School Team

When I was seven, my dad was offered a coaching job at SSCV. Until then, my three older brothers and I had been skiing in mogul competitions without a team. It was only chance that SSCV happened to have the best mogul team in the country. At the time, the only people I had ever skied with was my family, SSCV introduced me to an elite skiing community. Not only were there kids my age with whom I became friends with as well as pushed me, but more importantly there were idols that showed me the level of skiing that was possible through SSCV. Our mogul program has produced a baffling number of U.S. team athletes, World Cup starters, and Olympians, many of whom have mentored me throughout my career.

I can’t imagine what kind of skier I would be without the confidence in SSCV’s excellence backing me, and the countless experiences I have had through the club have formed who I am.

I know my younger self would be proud that I’m basically skiing at their level now and will be skiing beside them in the near future! I can’t imagine what kind of skier I would be without the confidence in SSCV’s excellence backing me, and the countless experiences I have had through the club have formed who I am.

A Letter from the Director

Eric Pepper

The 2022/23 season was filled with many achievements and success stories on and off the snow. Early season snow at Maloit Park made for great conditions all season. As a dedicated training facility, Maloit Park consistently provided high-quality training, fostering a strong community and results. We’ve witnessed a growth in the Nordic community at Maloit Park, gaining valuable support and trust. Our gratitude extends to our families for their unwavering support, as we couldn’t run the program without them.

It is also bittersweet to have Dan Weiland move from the Nordic Program Director position after 20 years. His dedication has built the quality program we enjoy now; while we are sad to see him move on, we are excited to see how his efforts will benefit our community and know he will continue to support our program and the club. Thanks, Dan!

Season Highlights

3 Athletes Continued on to Ski in College

NORDIC

Izzy Glackin (Bates), Adele Horning (Dartmouth), Mason Cruz-Abrams (Harvard) have moved on to ski at the collegiate level and Vlad Shambarger began his education at University of Colorado. We are incredibly thankful for what these individuals have meant to the program over the years and wish them the best.

5th Ranked Program at Junior Nationals

We excelled at the Junior National Championships in Fairbanks, Alaska, securing individual wins for both girls and boys. Rose Horning (U18) triumphed in a mass start skate race, while Will Bentley (U16) claimed victory in an individual classic race, showcasing our program’s versatility. Will’s outstanding performance, with top-three finishes in all individual events, reflects his years of dedicated training.

Rose Horning Qualified for 3 International Events

In addition to her victory at Junior Nationals, Rose Horning competed for the US at the World Junior Championships and the U18 Scandinavian Nations Group Races. This season, she is set to represent the US at the 2024 Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea.

Story of Impact

Adele Horning | Nordic Competition Team

I joined SSCV having never been to a training camp longer than 3 days. I had never had a Nordic team to train consistently with in any season other than winter. SSCV gave me a team to train with in every season. It gave me teammates to chase, to push me yearround and help training become my favorite part of the day. When Thanksgiving came along, I found out the team was heading to West Yellowstone for a training camp. I decided to go, and had one of the best weeks of my life training and spending time with the team in West Yellowstone. That week helped me become a better skier, but it also increased my confidence and sense of belonging in the ski community, an invaluable gift. That was my best season of racing, due in part, to it being my first season with SSCV. Being a member of SSCV has given me opportunities to race in new

SNOWBOARD A Letter from the Director

The 2022/23 snowboard season was at an all-time high. Across the board, we had more kids achieving their goals and getting on podiums than any previous year. With a number of kids getting named to the US Team and qualifying for Junior Worlds and Youth Olympics, our season was incredible! All our teams act as one big team even though we are in an individual sport. The lifelong friendships these kids are making are just as impressive as their results on snow. I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of an organization of this caliber.

Chris Laske Season Highlights

3 Athletes Named to the US Rookie Team

Hahna Norman, Brooklyn DePriest, and Evan Wrobel were named to the rookie slopestyle/big air in September. Ollie Martin met the criteria but was too young at 14 years old. Olivia Lisle met the requirements, but unfortunately, she sustained a knee injury and will be out until next winter.

5 Athletes Qualified for Junior Worlds

Brooklyn DePriest, Evan Wrobel, Kade Martin, Augustino Teixeira, and Ollie Martin qualified for Junior Worlds in New Zealand.

21 Top 10 Finishes at USASA Nationals

Our snowboard team has been working super hard all the way from our younger kids up through high school. Having 21 top 10 finishes at Nationals is a big deal! This goes to show that these kids are showing up, putting in the work and prioritizing a strong work ethic. All us coaches are super proud of their accomplishments.

Story of Impact

Nature David | Snowboard Athlete

My name is Nature. I am 13 years old and I live in the Piedmont of North Carolina, which translates to living approximately 300 feet above sea level. It almost never snows, and it is hot as Hades in the summer. When it snows back home, the town goes crazy, shuts down and every kid is so stoked to play in the snow. I taught myself to snowboard on a flimsy plastic snowboard on a steep driveway. When I finally went up to Appalachian Ski Mountain during a homeschool-day to try real snowboarding, I was hooked. I am so fortunate to have been homeschooled my whole life and I started going to Appalachian Ski Mountain more regularly. I cannot imagine my life without snowboarding. I started competing a bit with USASA last season and wanted to expand my horizons, as well as my abilities. My awesome family moved some figurative mountains and found SSCV. My mom and I moved out to Frisco for the winter, so I could train with the club for this snowboard season.

I learn something new every day when I am with the team, and that makes me happy to be a part of this club.

giving me incredible opportunities to not only grow as a snowboarder by helping me hone my skills but also by helping me grow as a person. It is a wonderful club to be a part of, and I don’t take one second of my time spent with the team for granted. I find my coach, Aidan, is very able to tailor his coaching to fit my own specific learning style. I am so stoked Aidan’s my coach. I love being a part of something where I can hang out with my friends and learn from my coach. I learn something new every day when I am with the team, and that makes me happy to be a part of this club. I feel like I am in good hands and that being a part of SSCV will help me achieve my goals

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Story of Impact

Scholarship Recipient

SSCV has helped me discover what I am capable of. Before joining the club I loved skiing, but did not have the resources necessary to pursue ski racing at the level I dreamed. SSCV gave me year-round training, skis to race on, training camps, and most importantly, amazing coaches and teammates. SSCV provided me with an incredible group of teammates to chase in intervals. They gave me a fast fleet of skis and perfect wax for races. I learned how to train and rest. I got to go to my first training camps where I could focus on skiing and have an amazing time with my team. SSCV also opened my eyes to new races and opportunities. During my first winter with the club, the SSCV coaches, persuaded me to race at Senior Nationals at the beginning of the season. I had never raced on the national level and was nervous, but they just encouraged me to have fun. To my surprise, I ended up qualifying for my first international event, the U18 Scandinavian Cup. My coaches continued to encourage me to reach for the top, and the following year I was able to qualify for two more international events, the U18 Scandinavian Cup and World Juniors. The coaches’ unwavering support and encouragement have inspired me to aim high without feeling pressured. Before joining SSCV I had never heard of these international events and opportunities. The club broadened my horizons and introduced me to the endless possibilities skiing could provide for me. The club continues to support me even when I am racing internationally. When I was unsure about funding for trips, the club stepped in and found a way to fund my racing. When I needed advice from across seas, my coaches were quick to pick up the phone and help me out. My teammates are cheering me on and watching me from home. Next year, I will be heading off to ski for the University of Vermont, but I know I will carry with me the friendships and support I have found with SSCV. I am beyond thankful for the teammates, coaches, and opportunities that SSCV has given me.

Voices of Generosity

Alpine Bank is a decades long sponsor of the Ski and Snowboard Club Vail. I like to think of SSCV as more of a “community partner” rather than a recipient of a bank donation. I say this because we are so aligned in our core values; a central one being that we are both completely dedicated to our local community. We both strive to provide access to athletics and education to *ALL* children in the valley regardless of financial resources or backgrounds. We are proud to continue our support in the 2023/24 ski season of being a corporate supporter of the SSCV Scholarship Fund. Over the years we’ve been blown away by the return on this investment as we have watched SSCV athletes grow and blossom into leaders in our community and on the podium.
