Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is Greece is the country’s second major economic, industrial, commercial and political center; a major transportation hub for the rest of southeastern Europe where its commercial port has been essential to Greeks since ancient times and the southeastern European hinterland.

This world-city, drenched in history, is renowned for its festivals, events and vibrant cultural life in general and is considered to be one of Greece’s top cultural capitals (it was selected as such in 1997 by the European Capital of Culture, in 2014 was designated European Youth Capital and this summer it will represent the 2020 Europride festival).

Founded in 315 BC by Cassander of Macedon, Thessaloniki’s cosmopolitan history can be traced through a fascinating 2,300 years.

Important cultural and commercial events such as the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair and the Thessaloniki International Film Festival are held annually, while the city also hosts the largest by-annual meeting of the Greek diaspora.

As an important metropolis by the Roman period, Thessaloniki was the second largest and wealthiest city of the Byzantine Empire and the seat of Emperor Galerius during the third century. Thessaloniki is home to numerous notable Byzantine monuments, including the Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as

well as several Roman, Ottoman and Sephardic Jewish structures. The city’s main university, Aristotle University, is the largest in Greece and the Balkans and has world-wide reputation as a top university.

Thessaloniki is a popular tourist destination in Greece.

This enticing destination is not only regarded as the cultural and entertainment capital of northern Greece but also the cultural capital of the country. The city’s main theatres, run by the National Theatre of Northern Greece which was established in 1961, include the Theatre of the Society of Macedonian Studies, where the National Theatre is based, the Royal Theatre (Vassiliko Theatro) the first base of the National Theatre, Moni Lazariston, and the Earth Theatre and Forest Theatre, both amphitheatrically built open-air theatres overlooking the city.

The title of the European Capital of Culture in 1997 saw the birth of the city’s first opera, which today forms an independent section of the National Theatre of Northern Greece.

The opera is based at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, one of the largest concert halls in Greece.

Recently a second building was also constructed

and designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. Thessaloniki is also the home of two symphony orchestras, the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of the Municipality of Thessaloniki. Olympion Theatre, the main home of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival and the Plateia Assos Odeon multiplex are the two major cinemas in downtown Thessaloniki. The city also has a number of multiplex cinemas in major shopping malls in the suburbs, most notably in Mediterranean Cosmos, the largest retail and entertainment development in the Balkans.

The Nea Paralia parks are used throughout the year for a variety of events, while they open up to the Thessaloniki waterfront, which is lined up with several cafes and bars; and during summer it is full of Thessalonians enjoying their long evening walks (referred to as «the volta» and vital part of the city’s culture). Having undergone an extensive revitalization, the city’s waterfront today features a total of 12 thematic gardens/ parks.

Thessaloniki’s proximity to areas such as the national parks of Pieria and beaches of Halkidiki often allows its residents to easily have access to some of the outdoor recreation The city is also right next to the Seich Sou (“say-shoo”) Forest National Park, just 3.5 (2 mi) away from Thessaloniki’s city center; and it offers residents and visitors alike quiet viewpoints of the city, mountain bike trails and landscaped hiking paths.

Other recreation spaces throughout the Thessaloniki Metropolitan Area include the Fragma Thermis, a landscaped parkland near Thermi and the Delta wetlands, west of the city center while urban beaches that have continuously been awarded with the blue flags are located along the 10km (6 min) coastline of Thessalonik’s southeastern suburbs of Thermaikos, about 2km (12 min) away from the city center.

Culture

International Trade Fair The Thessaloniki International Trade Fair has a venerable modern history dating to 1926.

Hosted every September for 9 days at the 180.000m2 Thessaloniki International Exhibition Center, in the heart of the city, the fair is organized by HELEXPO, which also organizes themed exhibitions and congresses throughout the year. The International Trade Fair is inaugurated by the Prime Minister and attended by more than 300.000 visitors every year.

International Film Festival The Thessaloniki International Film Festival has become the primary showcase in Southeastern Europe for the work of new and emerging filmmakers, as well as the leading film festival of the region. The event features an International Section, its Panorama of Greek Film, the New Horizons program, the Balkan Survey and numerous retrospectives and tributes to leading figures in the world of film. Since 1993, a succession of leading lights of international cinema, including Francis Ford Coppola, Faye Danaway, Catherine Deneuve and Irene Pappas, have visited the Festival. It is held in between October and November of every year.

International Festival of Photography The Thessaloniki International Festival of Photography (Photosynkyria) takes place in Thessaloniki from February to mid-April of every year, attracting the interest of both the photographic world and the wider public, while also functioning as a dynamic meeting-point for the Greek and the international photographic scene. Photosynkyria exhibitions and events are hosted in a variety of venues around Thessaloniki, including museums, heritage landmarks, galleries, bookstores and cafes. Photosynkyria was launched in 1988 photographer Aris Georgiou, and over the past five years has been organized by the Museum of Photography Thessaloniki, which annually appoints the artistic director of the Festival.

Documentary Festival

Dimitria

The Thessaloniki Documentary Festival was launched in March 1999, inspired by Dimitris Eipides, and benefitting from the local public’s enthusiastic response alongside extensive coverage in the local and international press.

In 2005, 22.000 admissions were registered.

The main program focuses on documentaries that explore global social and cultural developments, and also introduces a number of new side sections and events based on important work by new documentarists.

The festival attracts a diverse film-going public which rediscovers, year after year, images of the new century, new film paradigms, new directors, new technologies, but also representatives of the film world who find in it a reliable organization, appropriate for promoting their work. The event revolves around a sequence of unchanging sections: stories to tell, views of the world, the recording of memory, and portraits, but each year’s program is also supplemented with several others.

The Festival aims to offer to the film going public annually gathering in Thessaloniki an exploration of the common images of the early 21st century, and to explore its human landscape through documentary.

The three-month long festival of cultural events has been held every September - December since 1966. Named after Agios Dimitrios (St. Demetrius), the patron Saint of the city, it has become something of an institution of the city and very popular with the local population. It includes musical, theatrical, dance events, street happenings and exhibitions, and is organized and overseen by the Municipality of Thessaloniki, which celebrated its fortieth anniversary in 2006.

Thessaloniki International Book Fair The TIBF began in 2003 and has grown as the leading cultural event for books in Greece in Greek language as well as foreign ones. It also became a focal point for the literary world and its devotees in Greece as well as the wider Balkan and Mediterranean region.

City

Architecture in Thessaloniki is the direct result of the city’ position at the center of all historical developments in the Balkans. Aside from its commercial importance, Thessaloniki was also for many centuries the military and administrative hub of the region, and beyond this the transportation link between Europe and the Levant (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Israel/Palestine). Merchants, traders and refugees for all over Europe settled in the city. The need for commercial and public buildings in this new era of prosperity led to the construction of large edifices in the city center. During this time, the city saw the building of banks, large hotels, theatres, warehouses and factories. Architects who designed some of the most notable buildings of the city in the late 19th and early 20th century, include Vitaliano Poselli, Pietro Arrigoni, Xenophon Paionidis, Eli Modiano, Moshe Jacques, Jean Joseph Pleyber, Frederc Charnot, Ernst Ziller, Roubens Max, Levi Ernst, Angelos Siagas and others, using mainly the styles of Eclecticism and Art Nouveau. The city layout changed after 1870, when the seaside fortifications gave way to extensive piers, and many of the oldest walls of the city were demolished, including those surrounding the White Tower (p.44), which today stands as the main landmark of the city. Since parts of the early Byzantine Walls were demolished, this allowed the city to expand east and west along the coast. The expansion of Eleftherias Square towards the sea completed the new commercial hub of the city and at the time was considered one of the most vibrant squares of the city. As the city grew, workers moved to the western districts, due to their proximity to factories and industrial activities; while the middle and upper classes gradually moved from the city center to the eastern suburbs, leaving mainly businesses. In 1917, a devastating fire swept through the city and burnt uncontrollably for 32 hours. It destroyed the city’s historic center and a large part of its architectural heritage, but paved the way for modern development and allowed Thessaloniki the development of a proper European city center, featuring wider diagonal avenues and monumental squares; which the city

initially lacked much of what was considered to be «essential» in European architecture.

City

Center

After the great Thessaloniki fire of 1917, a team of architects and urban planners including Thomas Mawson and Ernest Hebrard, a French architect, chose the Byzantine era as the basis for the (re) building designs for Thessaloniki’s city center. The new city plan included axes, diagonal streets and monumental squares, with a street grid that would channel traffic smoothly. The plan of 1917 included provisions for future population expansions and a street and road network that would be, and still is sufficient today. It contained sites for public buildings and provided for the restoration of Byzantine churches and Ottoman mosques.

Today the city center of Thessaloniki includes the feature designed as part of the plan and forms the point of the city where most of the public buildings, historical sites, entertainment venues and stores are located. The center is characterized by its many historical buildings, arcades, laneways and distinct architectural styles such as Art Nouveau and Art Deco, which can be seen on many of its buildings. Also called the historic center, it is divided into several districts, which include Ladadika (p.36) (where many entertainment venues and tavernas are located), Kapani (p.41) (where the city’s central city market is located), Diagonios, Navarinou, Rotonta (p.60), Agia Sofia (p.85) and Ippodromio (White Tower), which are located around Thessaloniki’s most central point, Aristotelous Square (p.82). The west point of the city center is home to Thessaloniki’s law courts, its central international railway station, and the port, while on its eastern side stand the city’s two universities, the Thessaloniki International Exhibition Center, the city’s main stadium, its archaeological and byzantine museums, the new city hall and its central parklands and gardens. The central road arteries that pass through the city center include those of Tsimiski, Egnatia, Nikis, Mitropoleos, Venizelou and St. Demetrius avenues.

Ano Poli

_the old city_

Upper Town _in Greek: Ano Poli_ is the old town of Thessaloniki, located around the city’s acropolis, north of the city center.

The Upper Town is the most traditional part of the city as it preserves the Ottoman-era city fabric, otherwise destroyed in the great fire of 1917. Thus it features small stone-paved streets, old squares and houses in traditional Greek and Ottoman architecture. The Upper Town is the highest part of the city, and dominated by the acropolis, the Byzantine and Ottoman-era fort known as Heptapyrgion. The remaining city walls still ring the upper town, with many of its additional Ottoman and Byzantine structures still standing. The Ataturk Museum (p.30) is also in the Upper Town. During the Ottoman period it was the main district of the Turks of the city, while the Greeks and the Jews were living around the port. On clear days Mount Olympus, at about 100km (62 mi) away across the gulf, can also be seen towering the horizon.

How to get there: Take bus line 23, towards Ano Poli, from Eleftherias Square and get off at the bus station «Palio Terma». Just opposite the bus station you will see part of the city Wall and some stairs going up. If you follow these stairs, you will find yourself in the Acropolis of Thessaloniki known as «Eptapyrgio» (Greek) - Heptapyrgion or «Yedi Kule» (Turkish), which means Seven Towers, due to the castle inside of it. Eptapyrgio was built in the Venetian period (1423-1430) to resist the Turkish threat. The middle tower, which is also the largest one, was built by Tsaous Bey, the first Turkish governor of the city. Eptapyrgio (Heptapyrgion) housed the city’s prison from the end of the 18th century until 1988, and has now turned into a cultural center.

If you venture towards the sea, you will eventually

come across the Northern Wall, which was formed till the 12th century. Facing east end you will see a large gate structure (Portara) that used to lead in the Acropolis (p.81), the gate of Anna Palaiologina and the Trigonion Tower, the exact point from which the Ottomans invaded the city in 1430.

Once there, you can reminisce on this city’s past and present over a lovley kafe with a companion or simply enjoy the view of the city and the seafront.

Coming up along the Northern Wall just before reaching its western end, you will see the other big gate (Portara), that used to lead out of the Acropolis. The entrance of Vlatadon Monastery (p.86), which was founded in the middle of the 14th century by the Vlataioi brother monks, is a few meters away. The panoramic view of the monastery looks out over the city and Ano Poli extends in the far distance the peaks of Mount Olympus.

Another unforgettable landmark is the Osios David (Latomou Monastery).

This humble yet timeless church was built in the 5th century and is of great archaeological significance as the precursor of the doomed cruciform, with brilliant interior decoration, mosaics and frescoes.

In a very close distance you will reach Terpsitheas square with the Tourbes of Musa Baba, an important Muslim chaplain of the Ottoman era.

Head back towards the eastern wall passing through the narrow, paved streets of Ano Poli. This walk will be a unique experience, as this area is the most picturesque of the city. Before reaching the wall, don’t forget to visit Agios Nikolaos Orfanos, one more site inscribed in the Unesco Heritage List. Walk up the wall and take your time to relax in the Pasha Gardens, which were built around 19901904 as a «fantasy park» for Seifulah Pasha and his Freemason friends. At the way back from Ano Poli to the city center you will have the opportunity to visit Ataturk Museum, the building where Kemal Ataturk, the first leader of the modern-day country of Turkey was born, when the city was still called Selanik.

Southeastern

Northwestern

Southeastern Thessaloniki up until the 1920s was home to the city’s most affluent residents and formed the outermost suburbs of the city at the time, with the area close to Thermaic Gulf coast called Exoches, from the 19th century holiday villas which defined the area. Today Southeastern Thessaloniki has in some waybecome a natural extension of the city center, with the avenues of Megalou Alexandrou, Georgiou Papandreou (Antheon), Vasilissis Olgas Ave., Delfon, Konstantinou Karamanli (Nea Egnatia) and Papanastasiou passing through it, enclosing an area traditionally called Depot, from the name of the old tram station, owned by a French company. The area extends to Kalamaria and Pylaia, about 9 km (5.59 mi) from the White Tower in the city center. Some of the most notable mansions and villas of the oldera of the city remain along Vasilissis Olgas Ave. Built for the most wealthy residents and designed by well known architects, they are used today as museums, art galleries or remain as private properties. Some of them include Villa Bianca, Villa Ahmet Kapanci, Villa Modiano, Villa Mordoch, Villa Mehmet Kapanci, Hatzilazarou Mansion, Chateau Mon Bonheur (p. 46, 74) (often called red tower) and others.

Most of the southeastern Thessaloniki area is characterized by its modern architecture and apartment buildings, home to the middle-class and more than half of the municipality of Thessaloniki population. Today this area of the city is also home to 3 of the city’s main football stadiums, the Thessaloniki Concert Hall (p. 112), the Posidonio aquatic and athletic complex, the Naval Command post of Northern Greece and the old royal palace (called Palataki), located on the most westerly point of Karabournaki cape. The municipality of Kalamaria is also located in southeastern Thessaloniki and has become this part of the city’s most sought after areas, with many open spaces and home to high end bars, cafes and entertainment venues, most notably on Plastira street, along the shoreline.

Northwestern Thessaloniki has always been associated with industry and the working class, because as the city grew during the 1920’s, many workers moved there due to its proximity to the then operational factories and industrial activities. Today many factories and industries have been moved further out west and the area is experiencing rapid growth, as does the southeast. Many factories in this area have been reconverted into cultural centers managed by the municipality, while past any military grounds that are being surrounded by densely built neighborhoods are awaiting transformation into parklands.

Northwest Thessaloniki forms the main entry point into the city of Thessaloniki with the avenues of Monastiriou, Lagkada and 26is Octovriou passing through it, as well as the extension of the A1 motorway, feeding into Thessaloniki’s city center.

The area is home to the Macedonia InterCity Bus Terminal (p. 94) (KTEL), the Zeitenlik Allied memorial military cemetery and to large entertainment venues of the city, such as Milos, Fix, etc.

Northwestern Thessaloniki is also home to Moni Lazariston (p. 20), located in Stavroupoli, which today forms one of the most important cultural centers for the city.

Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki is housed in a 1962 vast architectural edifice that was designed by the renowned architect Patroklos Karantinos.

It is a listed building as a unique example of modernist art in Greece.

The museum’s collections include distinctive works of art and excavation finds from across Macedonia, as the archaeological service was the first state service to operate in Thessaloniki immediately after the liberation of the city.

Ever since 2002 the museum has operated as an independent special peripheral service of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. In 2003 it was completely renovated in order to meet new technical and archeological conservationist advances. The new exhibition of antiquities was organized into six permanent thematic units that encompass all aspects of personal and public life in antiquity. One featured exhibition along with a handful of additional temporary exhibitions take place annually on the premises, which often highlight the special and unique features of the Macedonians’ everyday life in relation to the wider cultural framework of the rest of the rest of the Greek world and the broader zone of southeaster Mediterranean basin. Don’t miss it!

Prehistoric Macedonia lower floor This exhibition unit begins with the period before the appearance of man, with plaster casts of fragments of skulls of Macedonian Uranopithecus, an early anthropoid. It continues with the Paleolithic period (350.ooo -10.000 bc). As you begin your visit, you’ll enter the production stage, a series of thematic assemblages are devoted to subjects such as hunting, fishing, farming and stock-raising, cooking and storage, weaving, metal-working, commercial exchanges, and technology.

Alongside these are displayed artifacts associated with the metaphysical and ideological concerns of prehistoric man.

Towards the birth of cities ground floor At the start of the exhibition on the ground floor, the unit devoted to the theme Towards the Birth of Cities contains items testifying to the Iron Age settlements of Macedonia, from 1100 to 700 bc. During the course of these centuries, settlements were reconstituted or founded, with central buildings and numerous storerooms for agricultural products. Examples are to be found at Kastanas, Pliladelphia, Assiros and Toumba in Thessaloniki. At the same time commercial conducts intensified with central and southern Greece, as well as with the coast of Asia Minor. Cities in southern Greece, such as Eretria, Andros and Chalkis, founded colonies on the coast of the Thermaic gulf, including Mende, Akanthos, Torone, Stageira, Dikaia and Methone. The Macedonian kingdom of the Argead Temenid dynasty took advantage of the settlement experiences of those colonies’ inhabitants. Meanwhile, it consolidated itself to the north of Mt. Olympus, and east of the Pindos range, from where it extended its authority to the whole of Macedonia after the 7th century B.C..

Macedonia from the 7th c. bc. Until the late antiquity ground floor This exhibition unit is devoted to the public and private life of the Macedonians from the Archaic period, when the independent Macedonian kingdom was created, down to the Imperial period (1st-4th c. ad), when Macedonia formed a province of the Roman empire. Eight large units cover various aspects of public and private life in the region, encompassing the political, military, social, and economic organization, arts and letters, religion, and cults and customs, of the great Macedonian cities. A large number of finds from both older and more recent excavations are displayed, mainly from ancient cities in central Macedonia (prefectures of Thessaloniki, Pieria, Kilkis and Halkidiki).

Thessaloniki, Metropolis of Macedonia ground floor This unit is devoted to historical and archaeological evidence for the city. Starting from its very foundation in 315 B.C. with the generation of Alexander the Great, the city emerged in the Roman period as an important center in the province of Macedonia, retaining its language, culture and the memory of its glorious Macedonian history.

At the end of this unit there is a partial reconstruction of an Archaic Ionic temple, the original site of which is unknown, but which was transferred during the Roman period to the area of the Sanctuaries of Thessaloniki and adorned with statues of emperors.

The gold of Macedon ground floor The inner courtyard is given over to the unit The Gold of Macedon.

This includes exhibits of superb art from various sites, mainly from Archaic and Classical cemeteries. At the same time, there is a description of all stages in the processing of noble metals, from that of mining to the complicated techniques used in working and decorating the valuable objects associated with the public and private life of the ancient Macedonians.

Field House Garden grave yard Field House Garden grave yard is the new permanent open-ground exhibition, divided into two major segments, with artifacts dating from the 2nd to the 4th century ad - the heyday of Thessaloniki. This exhibition is complementary to the Museum’s indoor exhibitions. The first segment reconstructs a hypothetical cemetery including finds, sarcophagi and altars from the west and eat cemeteries of the ancient city. The second segment consists of an imaginary reconstruction of a Graeco-Roman house, built with modern construction materials, which exhibits authentic mosaic floors and other artifacts relating to household activities and private life.

The Municipal Gallery, or Casa Bianca, houses the greatest collection of Thessaloniki's artists, representing three history-making generations from 1968 to present day with around 3000 works of cultural, historical and aesthetic importance.

Municipal Art Gallery of Thessaloniki housed in an eclectic style building, well known as Casa Bianca. The villa was built in the early 20th century as a residence for the wealthy Jewish family Fernadez Diaz, by the Italian architect Piero Arrigoni.

Exhibitions under the Municipality’s authorization are also held in Alaca Imaret and Yeni Cami. Alaca Imaret was built by order of Ishak Pasha in 1484 or 1487. It consists of a mosque with an imaret (public charity kitchen). The mosque and imaret are not in use anymore.

The mosque has a reverse T plan common to early Ottoman architecture, the prayer hall is covered by two large domesand it has a portico covered by five smaller domes. It had one minaret, which was destroyed after 1912, when Thessaloniki became part of Greece. It is under restoration till now. Yeni Cami is a historical mosque in Thessaloniki. It was built by Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli in 1902 for the city’s Donmeh community, Jewish converts to Islam. However, when the Donmeh left the city during the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, it was used to house the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki in 1925. Today it also serves as an exhibition center.

Due to the city’s rich and diverse history, Thessaloniki houses many museums dealing with many different eras in history.

The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki (p.14) was established in 1962 and houses some of the most important ancient Macedonian artifacts, including an extensive collection of golden artwork from the royal palaces of Aigai and Pella. lt also houses exhibits from Macedon’s prehistoric past, dating from the Neolithic to the Bronze age.

The Prehistoric Antiquities Museum of Thessaloniki has exhibits from those periods as well.

The Museum of Byzantine Culture (p.50) is one of the city’s most famous museums, showcasing the city’s glorious Byzantine past. The museum was also awarded Council of Europe’s museum prize in 2005.

The museum of the White Tower of Thessaloniki (p.44) houses a series of galleries relating to the city’s past, from the creation of the White Tower until recent years.

One of the most modern museums in the city is the Thessaloniki Science Center and Technology Museum (p.42) and is one of the most high-tech museums in Greece and southeastern Europe. lt features the largest planetarium in Greece, a cosmotheater with the largest flat screen in Greece, an amphitheater, a motion simulator with 3D projection and 6-axis movement and exhibition spaces. Other industrial and technological museums in the city include the Railway Museum (p.47) of Thessaloniki, which houses an original Orient Express train, the War Museum (p.55) of Thessaloniki and others. The city also has a number of educational and sports museums, including the Thessaloniki Olympic Museum (p.19).

The Ataturk Museum (p.30) in Thessaloniki is the historic house where Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of modern-day Turkey, was born. The house is now part of the Turkish consulate complex, but admission to the museum is free. The museum contains historic information about Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and his life, especially while he was in Thessaloniki. Other ethnological museums of the like include the Historical Museum of the Balkan Wars, the Jewish Museum (p.96) of Thessaloniki and the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle (p.18), containing information about the freedom fighters in Macedonia and their struggle to liberate the region from the Ottoman yoke.

The city also has a number of important art galleries. Such include the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art (p.52), housing exhibitions from a number of well-known Greek and foreign artists.

The Teloglion Foundation of Art (p.68) is part of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and includes an extensive collection of works by important artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, including works by prominent Greeks and native Thessalonians. The Thessaloniki Museum of Photography (p.70) also houses a number of important exhibitions, and is located within the old port of Thessaloniki.

The primary aim of the Thessaloniki History Center is to collect, record, conserve and share with the public or use for academic purposes the historical written, printed or audio-visual material that is linked directly or indirectly with the history of Thessaloniki and Macedonia in general.

On the ground floor, an exhibition space for permanent, as well as temporary exhibitions can be found. A library and a picture archive are housed on the second floor, as well as a conference and event hall with a translation center on the third floor.

Moreover, the city’s public archive is protected and organized in a scientific way to preserve this national treasure of historical, social, cultural and economic value.

Gallery

The Museum of Macedonian Struggle boasts to its name what is arguably the richest of all collections of relics and documents from the period of the Macedonian Struggle. Some of these items form part of the Museum’s permanent collection, while others remain in the Research Centre for Macedonian History and Documentation or in store for use after the reconfiguration of the Museum’s exhibition space.

The collections of the Museum of Macedonian Struggle (wholly renovated in 2009) are on show in seven halls on the ground floor and they are arranged by date and subject.

Guided tours are available every day, free of charge. These tours provide an introduction to a little known but ideologically weighted chapter of Greek and Balkan history in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and give visitors an insight into the city of Thessaloniki of that period.

The Thessaloniki Olympic Museum is housed in a modern building of 4,500 square meters, which consists of four exhibition halls, permanent exhibition devoted to the Olympic Games, permanent interactive machine exhibition entitled “The Science of Sports”, permanent interactive exhibition room with a track and held stadium simulation and finally an exhibition hall for temporary displays.

The aim that led to the establishment of the Olympic Museum was to display the athletic history of the country and to cover the gap that appeared to exist in Greece regarding this field. At the same time, basic intention was to create a vivid place, where the museum information will motivate the public to participate and also proceed with the healthy features of athletics.

Specifically, aim of the Olympic Museum is the conservation of sport heritage and the promotion of the cultural side of sport, missions that are accomplished in actual fact through permanent or temporary exhibitions, main feature of which is the information and communication with the public of Thessaloniki but also the wider region. The State Museum of Contemporary Art is situated in the northeast wing of the Moni Lazariston complex, with a total area of 3,300 square meters.

The building was modified into a museum according to modern international standards. The exhibition halls of the museum permanently house part of the Costakis Collection, which alternates periodically throughout the year .

Since the summer of 2001, the museum owns another exhibition place at the Port of Thessaloniki, the Warehouse B1 which houses the Museum’s periodical exhibitions as well as the exhibitions organized by the Center of Contemporary Art, the autonomous section of the SMCA.

Museum Locations______ 1__Moni Lazariston The Museum is situated in the northeast wing of the Moni Lazariston complex which also houses a number of other cultural functions with a total area of 20,000 square meters.

The building was modified into a museum with modern European standards through the necessary alterations and add-ons to technological equipment and security and control systems according to international standards (temperature and humidity control systems that ensure proper climate conditions on a 24-hour basis, fire detection and suppression systems, emergency exits and security systems at visitor entry points). The Museum’s total area is 3,270 square meters.

Moni Lazariston was built in 1861 by the monks of the order of Saint Vincent DePaul. Originally, the place functioned as an orphanage and later on as a catholic seminary of the Great Monastery of St Lazaros.

After years, the building was turned into a hospital and refugee shelter after 1922. The building indefinitely ceased functioning after the impactful1978 earthquakes.

In 1980, Moni Lazariston was designated as a “historical monument” while the building restoration began and were completed by the Thessaloniki Cultural Capital of Europe 1997 Organization.

The exhibiting halls of the Museum are situated in the basement and on the ground, first and second floors, covering totally an area of1400square meters. In the basement floor beyond the exhibiting places (8 exhibiting halls), there are storage places, as well. On the ground floor, there are the reception desk, the sales office, the security systems control office, exhibiting halls, administrative offices as well as the preservation workshop.

The Library, which contains an extensive bibliography related to the modern and contemporary European and Greek Art as well as Russian Avant Garde, lies on the first floor of the Museum. On the first floor, there are also administrative offices and a large exhibiting area. The second floor consists of offices of the Museum’s scientific staff, Directors and Secretariat as well as a large exhibiting area.

2__Port of Thessaloniki - Provlita A, Warehouse B1 In a joint agreement in June 8th 2001 by the Ministries of Culture and Commercial Shipping, Warehouse B1 of the port of Thessaloniki was turned over to the State Museum of Contemporary Art (S.M.C.A.) by the Thessaloniki Port Authority in order to house cultural events.

The S.M.C.A. converted the Warehouse to an exhibition hall. Necessary alterations were made to the building, concerning issues of security, lighting, climate control and all other mechanisms according to international museum standards.

The Warehouse B1, which is located in the eastern part of the Thessaloniki Port passenger terminal, consists of approximately 700 square meters. The exhibiting spaces lie on the ground and first floors as well as the hallways of the building, with a total area of 651 square meters.

The Warehouse exhibiting spaces house touring exhibitions of the Museum as well as of the Contemporary Art Center and exhibitions organized by the institutions that collaborate with the Museum.

The reception desk, sales office and control room are situated on the ground floor. The administrative offices and the conference hall of the Board of Directors are on the first floor.

The masterpieces of the Costakis Collection The Costakis Collection belongs to the S. M.C.A. since the purchase that took place in 31st March 2000. The core of the collection had been exhibited at the Museum’s exhibiting areas -at Moni Lazariston since 16th December 2000 until 30th April 2001. The exhibition has presented to the public more than 100 works, constituting the pride of the Collection, created by artists: K. Malevich, V. Tatlin, V. Kandinsky, El Lissitzky, L. Popova, 0. Rozanova, N. Udaltsova, A. Rodchenko, S. Nikribn, I. Kiiun, G. Klutsis, I. Chashnik, K. Ender.A. Drcvin, I. KudriasheyA. Sofronova, K. Vialov e.a. The exhibition had the title “The Avant-Garde - Masterpieces of the Costakis Collection”. The works displayed are indeed the “Masterpieces” of a Collection, rich in the work of important figures, avant-garde movements and artistic trends, full of fascinating reference to different social systems and to a process of artistic development of many forms and places, with revolutionary features of an exciting era.

Two catalogues (English-Greek) were published to accompany the exhibition, of about 400 pages; containing articles written by foreign scholars specialized in Russian Avant-Grade and the Costakis Collection. The writes presented are Milbades Papanikolaou, Natalya Adaskina, Evelyn Weiss, Boris Groys, Bojana Pejic, Noemi Smolic, John Bowlt, Nicoletta Mister, Margit Rowell, Aleksandr Lavrentjev, Selim Kahn- Mahomedov, Camilla Gray, Lutz Becker, Stephen Bonn, Irina Subobc, Magda earned and Irina Genova. It is about studies that aim at penetrating into the “mysteries” of this acclaimed artistic movement, which, of course, identifies a particular country and period (Soviet Union, between 19101930) but also, as it is widely acknowledged, played a significant role in the development and evolution of modernism in Europe and America.

In the “Magic Playground” Permanent exhibition of toys entitled “playing with forgotten logs”.

The exhibits are a kind donation of the Mayor, Mr. Giannis Boutaris, “dolls and dollhouses” with exhibits donations and concessions of friends of the Museum’s loved ones and finally “Thessaloniki toy makers”, a tribute to the Thessaloniki toy makers.

In “a class from the old days”. Permanent exhibition of educational material entitled “Learn my child the letters of God πρά things”, nostalgic memories from the school years of grandparents.

Alexander the Great

Situated within the Nea Paralia seaside path –which is undoubtedly one of the most frequented, energyfilled places in the city– is the monument to the most famous and influential historical figure hailing from the region, Alexander the Great.

The sheer size of the statue is enough to stop you in your tracks. At 6 meters (20 ft) height, the statue of Alexander the Great features him riding horseback with his sword at the ready. Directly opposite the statue is a near-perfect view of Mt. Olympus when the weather is favorable.

He is remembered as being one of the greatest military geniuses who ever lived, leaving his mark by creating one of the largest empires in history. He was born in 356 B.C. in Pella, Macedonia (less than a two hour drive from Thessaloniki). He was the son of King Philip of Macedon, who was an excellent Army General and organizer (who has his own, statue near same location, albeit built considerably smaller in size). His mother was Olympia, princess of Epirus. When he was just 20 years old, Alexander became the king of Macedonia and in a relatively short amount of time created an empire that reached as far east as India, spreading Greek language and culture along the way.

In 1974 the statue of Alexander the Great, mounting his beloved horse named Bucephalas, was erected on the waterfront of Thessaloniki, close to the White Tower and the Royal Theater. The artist who created the statue is Vangelis Moustakas.

While you’re in the area, the Nea Paralia seaside path is excellent for a relaxing walk, jogging or biking. From there, you will be able to spot numerous sailboats and cargo ships and is a gorgeous place to be when the sun is setting.

The Ataturk Museum is housed in the building where Kemal Ataturk, the widely recognized as the founder of modern-day Turkey was born. Its complex is located beside the Turkish Consulate in Thessaloniki 17 Apostolou Pavlou str.

In 1935 the house was donated by the municipal council of Thessaloniki to Turkey and was converted into a museum. In 1981 the building was re-painted back to its original and sprightly shade of pink.

The building of Ataturk Museum has three floors and a courtyard.

Most of the furniture is authentic. Any missing items were replaced with furniture from Kemal’s mausoleum and from Top Kapi in Istanbul. There are photographs on all the walls of Kemal at various periods of his life and contains information of his legacy within the historical trajectory.

There are four rooms on the ground floor, none of them of much interest to visitors. On the 1st floor of Ataturk Museum is the reception room, with European sofas, a large console table, and a chased brazier; a large sitting-room, with low banquettes around the walls; Kemal’s mother’s room, with a bed, a banquette, and a trunk; and the kitchen equipped with contemporary cooking utensils. The most impressive room on the second floor is the one in which Kemal was born, a large room with a banquette, his desk, and a large brazier. It faces another room, in which some of Kemal’s personal effects from Ankara are displayed. These include formal dress, smoking requisites, cutlery, cups, and other items. All the documents relating to Kemal’s schooldays have been hung on the walls. A pomegranate tree planted

by Kemal’s father still grows in the courtyard.

It stands in what was known as the Exochon Quarter, which was formed extra muros of the old city, in the late nineteenth century, following the gradual demolition of the east and sea wall, and especially after the destructive fire of 1890. During the interwar years, the Exochon Quarter ceased to be a holiday resort, and the luxurious villas there served a different purpose. After the end of the Second World War, most of the villas were pulled down and apartment blocks were built in their place.

The building was initially owned by the old-established Kapantzis family whose presence in the city can be traced back to the late eighteenth century, when they were prominently placed within in the guild system. The Villa Kapantzis, as it was named, was particularly lavish in its design and the construction costs exceeded 40,000 gold sovereigns, a nearly mythical amount in those days.

The cultural Centre of MIET in Thessaloniki opened in January 1989 under the name of the National Bank Cultural Center of Northern Greece and operated as such until February 1997. During this period the Centre contributed to the intellectual and artistic life of Thessaloniki, presenting exhibitions on: • Art (paintings, prints, photography, architecture). The Centre housed the MIET Art Collection for more than ten years, and organized exhibitions of works from this collection for the city’s public.

• History and micro-history of the city and its environs, and the refugee crisis.

In addition, the Center often partners up with other cultural institutions to mount literary, historical and art exhibitions, held lectures and courses on historical topography, and published catalogues accompanying these events. One of the most important and longstanding collaborations was with the Mount Athos Photographic Archive which led to the organization of four exhibitions with complementing photographs of great historical and artistic value.

NATIONAL THEATRE of

Northern Greece Theater

The National Theatre of Northern Greece, seated in Thessaloniki, was founded on January 13th, 1961 and inaugurated its activity in the summer of the same year with performances of "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles at the Ancient Theatre of Philippi.

Its first president was the writer Giorgos Theotokas and its first director Sokratis Karantinos. ln December 1961, the NTN.G. staged its performances in Thessaloniki, at the Royal Theatre (Vassiliko Theatro), while in autumn 1962 it was located at the new, at the time, building of the “Society for Macedonian Studies”. lts aim, from the time of its establishment, was the presentation of plays of Greek and world dramaturgy, the realization of tours in Northern Greece and the whole country (since 1 962), the production of ancient drama and classical plays, in ancient and open theaters, and cultural events in relation to theatre and art in general. NTNG was the first theatre in Greece which established repertory performances. At the same time, it organized a series of literary matinees. Since 1973, the Drama School of NTNG provides gratuitously full theatrical and generally artistic education constituting a “seedbed” for young actors. At December 1977, the Children’s Theatre Stage was instituted. At December 1982, the dance group “Aenaon Dancetheater” led by Daniel Lommel, became part of the NTNG. Finally the Opera of Thessaloniki was founded in 1997 as a separate part of the NTNG, and was merged with the NTNG. The National Theatre of Northern Greece, celebrating 53 years of creative artistic activity this year, is currently the country’s largest theatrical, as well as cultural organization, in broader terms. Comprising of 5 winter venues, 2 open-air theatres, and also organizing Greek and international tours, it functions as an active cultural core since 1961.

Since May 1996, the NTNG is a member of the Union of Theatres of Europe (www.ute-net.org) and a member of its directorial board until 2013. The NTNG is also a member of the lnternational Theatre lnstitute.

The artistic programming of the NTNG presents annually a program that combines in -house productions with co-productions with other theatrical organizations, tributes, and lodging of Greek and international guest performances.

The NTNG activity also expands to other cultural domains, such as education, literature, fine arts, exhibition, organizing conferences and international festivals, educational theatre programs and other exciting social activities.

The NTNG Children’s Theatre Stage, founded in 1977, but also the Youth’s Stage, founded in 2003, present on an annual basis performances of high aesthetic qualities for children and teenagers, that aim not only at entertaining, but also at bringing the children in touch with monumental texts, introducing them to the art theatre, in fuse them with important messages, and nurturing mature adult spectators.

The NTNG Drama School provides full theatre education and works as an incubator for young actors since 1 973. Theatre workshops, elocution lessons, free training of the drama school candidates, promotion

of new playwrights, organizing playwright contests, are some of the parallel activities run by the NTNG, in the context of its education policy.

At the last few years, special emphasis is given in the theatrical research and the publishing activity of the theatre. The Dramatology and Editions department provide the theoretical framework for the theatrical productions and are responsible for editing the print material that is published on the occasion of each performance. Additionally, the NTNG has initiated collaboration with renowned theatre scholars who are commissioned to write texts particularly for the performances of NTNG. When the digitization process of the rich historical an artistic theatre archive is accomplished, the archive is preserved in a digital repository, it is fully documented and digitally disseminated through the upgraded interactive website of the NTNG (www.ntng.gr) attracting web visitors, researchers and educators.

The NTNG is basically housed in two buildings, which are nearby. One is the Theatre of the Society for Macedonian Studies, which is stated opposite the White Tower (2 Ethnikis Amynis str.) and the second is Vassiliko Theatre (Royal Theatre), which is stated a few meters away, next to the White Tower.

The theatrical complex of the Royal Theatre, which now permanently hosts the NTNG, consists of a hall of 683 seats, a very large, multiple-capacity stage with a 10-metre sub-stage, and technical infrastructure for theatrical dance performances as well as concerts and film viewing. There is also a 2,000 sq. foyer that can be used for presenting large exhibitions.

Other stages that are used by the NTNG are in Lazaristes Monastery Moni Lazariston (Sokratis Karantinos Stage & Studio Theatre) and two open theatres: Theatre Dassous (Forest Theatre of Thessaloniki) & Theatro Gis (Theatre of the Earth). The NTNG halls are equipped with a full range of technical equipment and can offer hospitality to cultural events, lectures, album presentations and conferences.

The “Fragkomahalas” area is maintaining the old geniality of Thessaloniki The “Fragkomahalas” or “Fragkon” (“of the Franks”) is a neighborhood in the first municipal department (“Peerikaustos” Zone) of the municipality of Thessaloniki. Non-Greek European citizens have gathered there since the 19th century, and this is where the name of the neighborhood comes from. The catholic church of the Immaculate Conception of Holy-Mary, which the people of Thessaloniki call “Fragkoklisia”, church of the Franks, is situated in the center of the neighborhood.

The Ottoman Bank used to be in this area, and today the Conservatory of Northern Greece is being housed in the same preserved building. In the last years, many bars associated with civilization centers and many restaurants have opened in the streets of Syggrou, Valaoritou and Leontos Sofou, which are frequented by youngsters, artists and students.

Many stores of old Thessaloniki have been restored, so the waft of spices and exotic products is emitting behind the metallic blinds. Just like the old times.

The ‚”Square of the 7 Streets” The Jewish people, merchants of dairy products, coffee and spices used to call the “Emporiou” (of commerce) square “Plaza di sietecalenzos”, because seven streets were leading to it. In 1900, before Thessaloniki became a part of the current Greek nation, branches of big banks and stockbroking agencies where operating here, functioning with the capital provided by the rich commercial activity of the Balkans.

Thessaloniki has a history which can be retold as a tapestry and contains innumerable charms. The modern redevelopments in its historical center are part of an effort to allow its old, cosmopolitan character to coexist with a modern mix of old and new characteristics.

Ladadika district Areas

Ladadika is the name of a historic district and a landmark area of the city of Thessaloniki and is located near the port. For centuries, Ladadika has been one of the most important market areas of the city and is also recognized today for its poppin’ nightlife. Its name came about from the many olive oil shops of the area. Many Jews of the city were living there, while the so-called “Frankish district”, with the French/ Italian merchants and residents, was located beside. In the years before World War I it came to form the red light district. In 1985, Ladadika was listed as a heritage site by die Ministry of Culture. Its notable architectural styles with 19th century buildings is preserved and protected.

The Ladadika district provides you with one of the best examples of how old Thessaloniki looked, before the great fire of 1917 and the many years of modernization where old buildings gave away to the pressures of urbanization and the erection of taller, “modern” buildings. Miraculously, the Ladadika district survived an earthquake (and later) fire that gutted much of the city. Today, the colors and phenomenal restorations of old homes and shops will take you on a journey back in time!

During Turkish rule, the Ladadika was known as Istira or market in Turkish. The district was built on the site of the Port of Constantine the Great (4th Century AD). In 1990, the Ladadika was the benefactor of EU funds set aside to preserve, protect and revitalize areas of historical and architectural significance.

Today, the area is a mix of tavernas, eateries, bars, cafes.

Modiano Market Enclosed Market

Modiano is one of the most traditional markets of Thessaloniki.

It is located in the city center and has been part of the Thessalonians’ life for the past century as its construction started in 1922 and finished in 1930 by architect Eli Modiano. It took 8 years to complete and consists of the 5 stoas that are lined with small stores of food supplies.

It’s a simple yet iconic cross-shaped building that lies between two well-known streets of Thessaloniki city center, Vasileos Irakliou St and Egnatia Avenue. It consists of five smaller apartments with many exits to Ermou st. and Vasileos Irakliou st. Part of the building’s roof is made of glass and the architecture, although quite simple, is interesting as it resembles the marketplaces of Parisian neighborhoods.

Most of the shops in Modiano market are food stores that sell spices, cheese, fish, meat, delicatessen products and so on. Among them, a fair number of small tavernas, restaurants and bars are also hosted here. One could remark that time here has stood still and that tradition is still experiencing the modern traders and customers.

Considered to be the central city market that combines cheap deals, galore and variety.

A walk in Modiano will make you feel the spirit and scents of the old city of Thessaloniki as it truly is a living piece of history.

The retail stores are at mostly 2-story buildings. Kapani used to be the center of the retail market during the years of the Ottoman Empire and was known as Oun Kapan (Fiour Market) and is known today as either as Kapani or Vlali Market.

There used to be a square in the middle ofthe market and that’s where Turkish forces would conduct public hangings of Greek dissidents. The Kapani market burned down in 1889 and once again in the great fire of 1917.

Just like in a bazzar, one can find a great variety of goods that are reasonable and plentiful.

The scents of spices and fresh coffee is one of the first things you’ll notice, and possibly one of the strongest impressions!

The southern “stoa” or portico is where one will find purveyors of top-quality cheese, sausages and cured meats. A walk along Vlali Street and one will pass by the butcher shops with their lamb, goat, beef, poultry on offer, cut and trimmed per order. ln Askitou street. and Menexe street. you will find all the fish shops with daily catch.

Stores offering olives, cheeses and spices are conveniently located at each corner of the market.

Papadopoulos Loukoumia, submarine with vanilla flavor, spoon sweets and more…

The founder of the company is Stavros Papadopoulos. Before 1922 he left Pontus and he went to Romania to work. He ended up making loukoumia, candies and spoon sweets. In 1948 he opened the first store in Thessaloniki in the Georgiou Stavrou str., then in Katouni and in the following in Sygrou. Since 2000 he has been in the same store, in Ionos Dragoumi Str., where he has not changed anything, while in the lead is the third generation… and the story goes on…

Neoclassical Architecture

Buildings & Villas Monument

Pasha Hamam Al the junction of Peneiou, Kalvou and P. Karatza streets (Agioi Apostoloi district), just above Dimokratias square. These Turkish baths were in operation until quite recently under the name “Phoenix”.

They were built in 1520-1530.

Pazar Hamam (Yahudi Hamam)

The Loggou Mansion is located in Agia Sophia Square, southwest of the homonymous church. It was built in 1926 by architect Tzenari and is a rather remarkable edifice of that era due to its tower shape, the use of intentional masonry work on its facades and its elaborate “sahnisia” (Oriels) and balconies.

The building of the Turkish baths once housed here now hosts a charming flower market (“Louloudadika”). It was built in the first half of the 16th century and is currently undergoing restoration work.

At the corner of Cassandrou and Agiou Nikolaou streets, behind Saint Demetrius. Built in the 16th century, the building used to house the Aigli Cinema and later the Aigli Restaurant, which had live music.

HANTH (Y.M.C.A)

Located in HANTH square, among the White Tower, the State Theatre and HELEXPO. It was built in 1924 and designed by architect M. Delladetsima and approved by the technical office of the YMCA in New York.

The building combines eclectic style elements and neo-byzantine morphological standards. In September 2005, a fire broke out in the theatre “Avlaia”, which was housed in the YMCA building, and part of the third floor and the roof of the historic building was subsequently destroyed.

Thessaloniki Water Supply Museum is in the Sfagia area near the city’s western entry point. The museum is housed in what was once a pumping station of the Thessaloniki Water Supply and Sewerage Co., to which it belongs. The purpose of the museum is to educate the visitors in aspects of the history of the city’s water supply, and in the correct management of water supplies. The pumping station was built in the late 19th century (1890 - 1894) at a distance of about 1,500 meters from the western walls of the historic city center. It was built entirely from construction materials imported from Belgium.

The Thessaloniki Water Supply Museum has two halls where motor-machinery and electricity generators, old electricity circuit switchboards and huge pumping units are on display. The first one used to be the boiler room and had two steam-powered units which were used to pump water from 1892 until 1929. In this hall there is a detailed display showing how steam was produced to drive the steam engines in the pump house.

In the second hall are the pumps, the first and second generation diesel engines (MAN and MIRRLEES respectively), and the BRUSH electricity generators, which were used to irrigate Thessaloniki until 1978.

All the machinery is authentic, has been maintained and is in good working order. In fact, one of the machines is open at the side, so that visitors can see what happens in its interior when it is operating.

Water Supply

Thessaloniki Railway Museum is located at the west side of Thessaloniki, approximately 500 meters in size after the overpass bridge of Monastiriou Street towards the exit of the city and is housed in the renovated building of the former Military Station of OSE. The building had been constructed at the end of the 19th century (in particular from 1891 until 1894) when the city was part of the Ottoman Empire.

It had been designed by the renowned Italian architect Pierro Arigoni who had also designed the Casa Bianca building during 1911. In the station-master’s office inside the station building there is a map with all Greek railway lines marked on it, railway workers’ uniforms, railway workmen’s tools, personal belongings, technical manuals and details of all old steam engines and diesel engines belonging to the Greek railways. Thessaloniki Railway Museum is also home to some of the furnishings from the carriages of the former Greek royal family. In the museum courtyard there is a restaurant carriage from the renowned Orient Express, which is open to visitors daily.

Mosques & Hamam Muslim Buildings Monument

Alaca Imaret Built in 1484, today the building is used for cultural events and exhibitions. It belongs in the category of early Ottoman mosques, which covered other needs besides the religious, such as providing food, accommodation, a meeting place for monastic orders etc. It was named Alaca Imaret (meaning colorful poor house) both due to the colored oval stones which decorated the minaret and to the poor house which functioned next to it.

Bezesteni The Bezesteni is a rectangular building covered by six domes originally lined with lead. The Bezesteni was and still is a market hall. This covered market place was built by Vayazit II at the end of the 15th century and constituted for many years the center of commercial life for Thessaloniki. As it is stated, the Bezesteni was built to provide protection for the most valuable merchandise, such as the finest clothes and gold goods. This was where it got its name from, Bezesteni, meaning “clothes market”. It is most interesting that over the centuries the original character and function of the place has not been lost.

Hamza Bey This building accommodated until lately the Alkazar Cinema, it was built in 1467 and was added andrepaired in subsequent periods.

At the moment it is restored as it is planned to form a metro station.

Bey Hamam The Turkish baths (hamam) were in operation until quite recently under the name “Paradise”.

Yeni Jami Yeni Jami was built in 1901-02 and nowadays is used by the Municipality for cultural events. It used to house the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki (hence the name of the street)..

The Museum of Byzantine Culture aims in presenting various aspects of life during the byzantine and post byzantine periods: art, ideology, social structure and religion, as well as how historical changes and the political situation were affecting people’s everyday life.

At the same time, the activity of the Department of Educational Programs, the sound structure and function of the conservation laboratories and of the archaeological material storerooms, the provision of scientific know-how to the other Balkan countries, the organization of scientific meetings and conferences, as well as the editing and publishing work, render the museum into an exceptionally important center for the preservation, research and promotion of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine culture. Since the museum’s inauguration in 1994, an annual bulletin is published, the first of its kind by a Greek public museum.

The Museum of Byzantine Culture was awarded the Council of Europe Museum Prize for 2005, following the concurrent recommendation of the Council’s Committee for Culture, Science and Education. The founding of The Museum of Byzantine Culture and its official opening in 1994 in Thessaloniki, the most “Byzantine” city in the modern Greek state marks the end of a story that had begun long before, just after the city’s newly-minted liberation in 1912.

The Thessaloniki Cinema Museum is housed in a local landmark- a warehouse that dates from the first wharf of the port of Thessaloniki, at the end of the old avenue along the waterfront and not far away from Aristotelous Square in the center of the city. The warehouse covers an approximate area of 1.100 m2, and was built in 1910 along with the port’s former customs house in line with plans drawn up by Italian architect Eli Modiano, the famous architect, and is characteristic of the style of industrial architectural that dominated the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. This building, along with other industrial facilities of the same period on the first wharf, have obtained National Historic site status and are protected by a decision made by the Ministry of Culture on June 16th, 1971.

The remodeling of the storehouse took place during 1997, Thessaloniki’s year as Cultural Capital of Europe, after architects had drawn up plans which respected the character of the building and exploited its potential to the benefit of the newly founded Thessaloniki Cinema Museum.

The museum’s mission is to gather, preserve and display as museum exhibits items from the life of the cinema in Greece. Exhibits include machinery, i.e. cine-cameras and projectors, old pieces of cinema equipment and attachments, cinema-film developing tanks, lenses, sub-titling machines etc., celluloid material (films, news reels etc.), photographs from almost two thousand films, gigantic, hand- produced cinema posters, the musical background to all cinema films circulated prior to 1995 on LPs and CDs, and a cinema archive.

In the cinema archive visitors and researchers alike can find information about the cinema in Greece from 1985 and on. This includes information about film festivals, public showings of films in Greek cinemas, and biographical data on directors and actors etc. Similar work covering the period from 1926 to 1985 is now reaching its completion.

The museum provides organized tours and shows excerpts of films in a room specially designed for this purpose. Grab some popcorn and take it in!

Macedonian Museum of

Contemporary Art

The Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art is one of the three contemporary art museums in Thessaloniki but is considered to have the largest collection. The museum covers every aspect of contemporary art since 1979, when it was founded after a donation of 47 works of art made by collector Alexander Iolas. Today, the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art hosts about 2000 works of art in its permanent collection and, since 2000, also hosts a scientific library of 2000 books. Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art is housed on the grounds of the Thessaloniki International Fair. The museum houses numerous pieces which will give visitors a perspective into the cultural, sociopolitical sphere and ‘scene’ in the region. Be ready for inspiration!

Acropolis

Eptapyrgio Monument

The Thessaloniki Acropolis lies in the northeastern corner and is one of the highest points of the city, just beyond the Vlatadon Monastery and inside the northern wall of the city, which has been conserved to an astoundingly high degree, all things considered

Two massive “portares” or entrance gates, guide the visitor inside to the Acropolis. In ancient times, the Acropolis was the 2nd line of defense in the event that the city was under attack. Beside the eastern gate lies the “Pyrovolio” or Tower of Trigonio which dominates the landscape and offers magnificent views of the city. In fact, it was from this exact location that the Ottoman Empire mounted its invasion of the city in 1430.

The northernmost section of the Acropolis is referred to colloquially as the “Eptapyrgio”. This portion of the castle fortification is also commonly referenced by its Turkish name Yedi Kule. This section is a Byzantine-era and Ottoman-era fortress which is situated on the northeastern corner of the acropolis. Curiously, despite the fact that in both Greek and Turkish the name of the fortification means “Fortress of 7 Towers”, actually counts 10, and was likely named after the Yedikule Fortress located in Istanbul. This fortification acted as the major stronghold of the city’s acropolis and was the seat of its garrison commander in Ottoman times up until the late 19th century. Following that time, it was made into a prison which had inmates until 1989.

The stories of what life was like inside the prison live on in classic Greek rebetika or folk songs that can be heard around the country. Restoration projects and archaeological work at the site began in the 1970s and continues to this day, aided by Greek and American universities.

In recent years, the Greel Ministry of Culture and the regional Byzantine Archaeological Service, the 9th Ephorate of Byzantine and Modern Antiquities, has moved some of its offices there. They have conducted restoration projects since1973 on the northeastern curtain wall and again between 1983 and 1985 following the damages which occurred from the 1978 earthquake which greatly impacted the city.

The expansive and systematic archaeological study and restoration of the Heptapyrgion first began in 1990. The first phase ended in 1995 with the completion of a photogram-metric architectural survey and the creation of a digital model of the fortress. Multiple world-renowned institutions participate in the relevant archeological projects including the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Cornell University as well as the Center for Preservation and Heritage of Mount Athos and the Municipality of Thessaloniki.

The War Museum of the Thessaloniki is a satellite museum of the department of the War Museum of Athens. It became open to the public in the year 2000. The history of the building, though, begins in 1900 when it was designed by the italian architect Vitalliano Posseli. Nowadays, it hosts in its exhibitions more than10000 relics composing the modern history of Greece. Starting with the pre-evolution years and ending with the conflict in Cyprus, which happened in 1974, the visitor has the chance to relive the Greek War of Independence, the Balkan Wars and the two World Wars. In this historical frame the visitor interacts with relics from different nations that took part in all the eras as enemies or allies of the Greek Armed Forces.

Guided tours are also available for the guests. Those tours are also available in English (no additional charge to admission) and are about one hour long. Each tour is given by an enlisted member of the Hellenic Army.

The Hellenic Pharmaceutical Museum is the only such Museum in Greece today. Founded in 2007 after a deliberation of the Pharmaceutical Association of Thessaloniki, it aims to accommodate and preservethe history, mainly Greek but also European and global, of pharmaceutical science. It pays tribute to an integral part of Greek history which iscurrently faced with extinction because of the numerous reforms affecting Greek pharmacy. In spite of everything, the Hellenic Pharmaceutical Museum is continuously striving to rescue these pharmaceutical keepsakes and to introduce them to Greek and foreign visitors.

The Museum containsover 3,500 pharmaceutical exhibits, either donated or long-termloaned by Greek pharmacists,with its collection growingby the year.Exhibits indicatively include pharmaceutical vessels made of porcelain, glass vials, prescriptions, cash registers, pharmaceutical furniture, medical instruments, pharmaceutical books, scales, glasses, sunglasses, portable pharmacies, mortars and pestles, thermometers,to name but a few. The oldest exhibit is an outstanding book of Dioscourides,dating back to the early 1500s.

Some other remarkable exhibits are the impressivepieces of furniture donated byMr Michael Panou, a pharmacist from Thessaloniki and the Museum’s only private donor.

The Hellenic Pharmaceutical Museum is an unprecedented experience suitable for anyone, regardless of profession, age, nationality, gender, or educational level, as a visit and guided tour offers one the chance to travel back in time, and gain significant insights into how the image and function of the pharmacy has evolved over the past 500 years, before reaching its current phase, when its main purpose is to sell medications or cosmetics.

Koulouri (“Thessalonikis”)

Originating from the city of Thessaloniki, the koulouri is a wonderful treat for any time of day that is crunchy on the outside with an amazingly soft and slightly chewy center. These delicious Greek bread rings covered with toasted sesame seeds are definitely the most popular street food one can find in Greece- and with good reason!

You can find them stocked in large baskets on every street corner and every bakery, being probably the most popular breakfast for Greeks, along with a cup of coffee.

Bougatsa (“Thessalonikis”)

It is said to originate in Serres, in the Macedonia region of northern Greece and is especially popular in the northern Greek port of Thessaloniki. The most common filling is sweet semolina custard. Common savory fillings include mizithra cheese, spinach or minced meat. Bougatsa is prepared from phyllo dough wrapped around a filling. After it is baked, it is cut into serving pieces and served hot. If the filling is semolina custard, then the pastry may be lightly dusted with powdered sugar or cinnamon.

Souvlaki

Souvlaki (plural souvlakia), is a popular Greek fast food consisting of small pieces of meat and sometimes vegetables grilled on a skewer.

It may be served on the skewer for eating out of hand, in a pita sandwich with garnishes and sauces, or on a dinner plate, often with fried potatoes. The meat usually used is pork, although chicken and lamb may also be used. Good souvlaki is to be found in places that serve only this. The terminology used in Thessaloniki is different from Athens (called “kalamaki”) a joke suggests that any Athenian or other southern Greek who visits Thessaloniki and asks for a kalamaki will be mockingly given a drinking straw (also called “kalamaki”). A squeeze of lemon to top it off never hurts!

Bazaar Shop

Located alongside Eleftheriou Venizeliou st., and a block away from the Ancient Roman Agora Forum, this place has something in store for vintage enthusiasts. Back in 1928 when thousands of immigrants from Asia Minor settled in this part of the city, a number of buildings were constructed in order for housing needs to be covered. Most of them had contained small shops on the ground floor.

During the last decades several of them were used as antique shops as the whole place was being used as a market. Today many traditional little taverns that serve wine, retsina wine and small dishes of delicacies (mezedes) have taken their place.

The Rotonda, is an ancient impressive roman monument inscribed in the World Heritage List of UNESCO. It has been determined through archeological evidence that it was first constructed as a mausoleum for the Emperor Galerius, who had his seat at Thessaloniki at the end of the 3rd century and the beginning of the 4th. It was part of the impressive building complex which included the Galerius Palace (Navarinou Square), the Hippodrome, the Arch of Galerius (Kamara) and other buildings in Thessaloniki. There was an impressive street lined with massive colonnades that joined the Arch of Galerius and the rest of the Galerius Palace with Rotonda. The cylindrical building initially had an internal diameter of 24.5m and 30m height, while the walls are 6.3m thick and inside have eight apses (recesses).

In the end of the 4th century, the Emperor Theodosius the Great (379-395), was baptized as Christian in Thessaloniki and converted the mausoleum into a Christian church. As a result, the sanctum and perimetric aisle were added and the western gate opened to become the principal entrance instead of the southern. The Christians decorated the walls of Rotonda with a mosaic of unbelievable variety of colors, while the figure of Christ was depicted in the center of the cupola in a shining sphere, in the colors of the rainbow. Unfortunately, only a portion of this composition can be seen nowadays.

However, below the cupola, bands of angels, martyrs and the saints of I early Christian times are depicted and preserved in a significantly better condition. The church was i dedicated to Christ or the Archangels and during the 10th-12th centuries was the cathedral of Thessaloniki. During the Turkish occupation, it was turned I into a mosque and the minaret, which stands in front of it, was built (1591).

After the liberation of the city (1912), the building was re-tranformed into a Christian church under the name of Saint George (Agios Georios). Finally, the name Rotonda prevailed due to the cylindrical shape of the monument.

Arch of Galerius

Kamara The quadruple arch was part of the large building complex which included the Galerius Palace, the Hippodrome and the Rotonda. Four gates were formed with two gates on today’s Egnatia Street and the other two on today’s Demetriou GounariSstreet, the road that ran from the mighty Galerius Palace up to the Rotonda. Only 2 of the 4 original columns remain intact within this impressive structure, upon which are impressive and artistic reliefs on which represent the Galerius’ victories against the Persians and the triumphal celebrations. It was built at the end of the 3rd century or early 4th to honor the victories of the Emperor Galerius against the Persians in Asia Minor and Syria (297 AD).

A more robust understanding of the sculptural program of the arch such as possible inscriptions or other features which have been lost to time are of course limited by the great loss of the majority of the marble panels during various periods of historical strife within the city, but the remains give an impression of the whole. Four vertically stacked registers of sculpted decoration were carved on each pillar, each separated by elaborate moldings. A label for the Tigris River indicates that there were likely labels on other representations as the builders deemed necessary. Artistic license was taken in the representations, for instance, the Caesar Galerius is shown in personal combat with the Persian King Sassanid Shah Narses in one of the panels; although it is historically agreed upon that they never actually met in battle.

On the façade of the arch is a stallion-mounted Galerius attacks a similarly mounted Narses bearing a lance as an eagle, bearing a victory wreath in its talons, approaches Galerius. The Caesar sits securely on his rearing horse, while the Persian king appears nearly unhorsed. The panicked Persians cower under the hooves of the Caesar’s horse in the chaos of battle. The panel expresses the power of the Caesar Galerius.

The relief of the imperial family conjoined in a sacrifice of thanksgiving owes its distant prototype to the Augustan reliefs on the Ara Pacis in Rome. Galerius’ wife, Diocletian’s daughter Valeria, is shown at his side, helping authenticate his connection to his predecessor. Here as elsewhere all the faces have been carefully chiseled off, whether as damnatio memoriae or in later cultural intolerance of images.

The ruined Palace of Galerius sprawls east-west across the square.

You can descend into it, or just peer over the handrail. Pieces of floor mosaic, columns and a few walls survive. Similar as many other famous Romans (Julius Caesar and Pompeii, Brutus, the Emperors Anthony and Octavius etc.), who had stayed in Thessaloniki, Galerius Valerius Maximianus, one of the four co-emperors of the Tetrach of the Roman Empire at the end of the 3rd century and in the beginning of the 4th (297-307), had chosen Thessaloniki as his seat. Galerius decided to adorn the city, in a true Roman way, with imposing buildings and structures. As a result, along with the Eastern Walls of the city, he created a large palace complex that consists of huge buildings, the palace itself, the ‘octagon’, the Rotonda, a large Hippodrome, arcades, triumphal arches amongst other, smaller exposed ruins.

Where Navarinou Square and Demetriou Gounari Street is now located, a significant part of the Galerius Palace complex has been excavated including massive walls, a large internal courtyard, peristyle, corridors and rooms with beautiful mosaic floors, fountains and springs.

On the southwest part of the site is where the Octagon lies, a large octagonal structure of almost 30m in internal diameter, which was a temple or the throne room with a wonderful floor paving remaining.

The Hippodrome (400 m in length), lies on the east of the Palace, unfortunately underneath the block of flats in the Hippodrome Square.

Many of its remaining marbles and stones were later used in various repairs to the western walls. On a large marble archway found on the site, which is now placed in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, two main figures of the city are represented, the embodiment of Thessaloniki and Galerius himself.

Folklife & Ethnological The F.E.M.M-Th. explores and studies the traditional culture of recent times in the region of northern Greece. This building operates in a way which gathers, preserves, safeguards and records the material evidence of that past, making it available to the public for purposes of study, instruction and amusement.

The Museum’s collections comprise some 20,000 items of all kinds-associated with agriculture, livestock breeding, fishing, as well as crafts such as weaving, sewing, embroidery, metalwork, carpentry and ceramics. These are artifacts which served man’s basic needs for food, housing and clothing, as well as other items playing a part in his social and spiritual life.

Through knowledge of the society of yesterday the Museum hopes to promote a better understanding of today’s world. Its role is first and foremost a social one. Athonos Square is one of the most vibrant and exhilarating areas in downtown Thessaloniki

It’s located just before Aristotelous Plaza within a small walkable distance of about 200 meters west from the church of Agia Sofia (Holy Wisdom) next to the traditional Kapani market, making it in the heart of the city’s center.

Built immediately after the fire of 1917, it was a major space for flea markets. Today the square has formed its new character with tavernas, coffee shops and bars, but keeps its traditional character with the remaining woodwork, beads, and herb shops. Thus the alter name Karekladika (a word in Greek that means shops that trade wooden chairs).

The place is considered one of the best places to eat and a favorite destination for both local and tourist visitors. There are several taverns specialized in Greek traditional cuisine while several Balkan and Eastern elements are quite obvious. This pretty much depicts the city’s identity and history, as Thessaloniki was the crossroad of several different civilizations each one representing a different food culture and philosophy. The majority of the taverns and restaurants are beautifully decorated and some include live Greek traditional music.

The environment is usually warm and friendly. Prices are generally considered reasonable and the service is fast. Make your own combination of salads and other smaller but less expensive tempting dishes. Mezedes are at their best here. Try as many different flavors as possible! The dessert is usually provided free of charge everywhere, and samples are often encouraged.

The Teloglion Fine Arts Foundation boasts an impressive, modern, state-of-the-art building with a panoramic view over the Thermaikos Gulf and Olympus, set in a large green park on the outskirts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki campus. It houses some notable collections, created by the husband and wife team Aliki and Nestor Telloglou in the spirit of philanthropy and serving the local community.

As part of the largest university in Greece, the Teloglion Foundation of Art links research, teaching, scholarship, the child, the worker, the third age and art and culture in their broadest sense. Consisting of more than 7,000 works, its extensive collection can to a large extent tell the story of Modern Greek art up to the present day. In addition to important nineteenth and twentieth century artists, the strong points of the collection are its representation of abstraction in Greece and Northern Greek painters.

There is an exceptional collection of twentieth century punts, complemented by smaller collections of sculpture, antiquities, Far Eastern art, ceramics, glass and textiles, while new donations are added on a daily basis. The most important donation/research tool in the Foundation is the Library and Spiteri Archive, donated by Tonis and Ioanna Spiteri, which covers Greek and European art, especially Paris between 1945-1980.

Other important donations to the Tl include the Giorgos Mourelos Archive and the Marinos Kalligas Library.

The Thessaloniki Museum of Photography is the only state-run museum in Greece which is under the supervision of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Tourism that is dedicated exclusively to photography.

In1897 a group of people brought together through the “Parallaxi” society set up the first museum of Photography in Thessaloniki.

However, this endeavor did not fare as it should have done. In 1995 the Organization for Thessaloniki Cultural Capital 1997 founded the Museum of Photography, which has been an independent body since 1998. Since December 2001 the museum has been housed in Warehouse 1 in Thessaloniki harbor, the same building which houses the Cinema Museum.

The museum’s mission is to collect photographs, especially those of historical and artistic quality to Greece, to organize exhibitions and events to show the museum’s collection, to join forces with other similar bodies and work together, and to publish books on photography.

The museum has 57 photographs and 700 negatives by the photographer Nelly, photographer Socrates Iordanides’ archive, with themes from fashion, news stories, cityscapes and such like from the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s, and is ready to go ahead with the purchase of the collection entitled “Picture and Image” (the work of 39 contemporary Greek photographers), the archive of photographer Giannis Stylianos and part of the collection entitled New Images.

Since 1999 the museum has collaborated with a host of Greek and international bodies to undertake the organization of “Photo Synkyria”, the country’s most important and longest-lasting photographic institution.

Recent excavations for the building of a new underground parking garage in the square in front of the Ministry of Macedonia md Thrace (Dioikitirio) revealed fabulous collection of ancient ruins of ancient buildings (3rd century BC) and early Christian to post-Byzantine monuments such as public buildings, baths, a marble head of the goddess Aphrodite, bronze bust of Athena etc.

It is the only such architectural unit known in the city. It is strikingly well preserved with building walls standing to a height of 2.80 meters (~9 feet). This urban island lies to the east of a Roman road, 6 meters (~20 feet) wide, which formed one of the main arteries of the perpendicular road network of the city. To date, a dense network of drainage and water supply channels of various types has been found, including the earliest drainage system of Roman times with a stone built vaulted covering.

Something really special about Thessaloniki is that significant archaeological finds are fairly commonplace (especially during the building of the metro) and offer a very local peek into the city’s past. When you step out of here you’re back in the modern city and the differences are exhilarating!

The Byzantine Bath of the Upper Town (Ano Poli area) in Thessaloniki is the only Byzantine bathhouse that has survived from the middle Byzantine period in Greece. It is located on the Theotokopoulou Street in the Upper Old City of Thessaloniki.

The bathhouse tradition dates back to the late 13th and early 14th century and functioned continuously, relaxing and rejuvenating residents for nearly half a millennium, until 1940. The original architecture follows the typical conventions of Roman baths, with a frigidarium, tepidarium and caldarium, each with two rooms. To the north of the baths was the cistern that provided it with water, with a hearth beneath to warm it. In Byzantine times the building was alternately used by men and women, but in the Ottoman period the bath was divided into exclusively male and female sections, by blocking off each pair of rooms from each other.

In 1988, it was included among the Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki on the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

Thermaikos suburb The exchange of the Muslim and Christian populations after the Asia Minor catastrophe resulted in the establishment of numerous settlements around Thessaloniki by refugees from Asia Minor. These settlements were established along the eastern coast in the wider Municipality region at Perea, N. Epivates (formerly Baxe), Agia Triada in the former Thermaikon Municipality, Angelochori, N. Kerasia in the former Michaniona Municipality and Mesimeri in the Epanomi Municipality, which now constitute the new Thermaikon Municipality under the Kallikratis Law. The Thermaikos Municipality stretches over 50 km of coastline to the east of the city of Thessaloniki. It is a stone’s throw away from

the airport and is an ideal tourist destination for visitors all year round. At the dozens of small taverns that are literally strewn along the beach, one can enjoy fresh seafood and traditional appetizers accompanied by excellent local wine and the well-known “tsipouro”.

It is made by local producers in the traditional manner and its recipe has been created and handed down from generation to generation.

There was intense residential development in the region due to population re-settlement in the 1990’s by predominantly “new” families who then settled permanently in the region in search of a better quality of life close to the sea and the nature.

TIP

If you stumble along a roadside “kantina” (Greek food truck), be sure to try a pansetta (fried pork) or souvlaki sandwich.

Customs House Monument

The original Customs House stands firmly in the Thessaloniki Port.

It was built in 1910 by the designs of the famous Italian architect Eli Modiano who also designed the Kapani marketpalce in 1922. The views of the building follow neo-renaissance lines and are easily recognizable along the seafront.

Dioikitirio Dioikitirio stands in Dioikitiriou square between Agiou Dimitriou, I. Dragoumi, Cassandrou & Proxenon streets. II houses today the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace, The building commenced in 1881 based on designs by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli. It was in this building that the Turkish general Hasan Taxin Pasha signed over the city of Thessaloniki to the Hellenic Army on 26th October 1912. The top floor was added on later in 1955.

Ot toman Bank On the corner of Frangon and Leontos Sofou streets. It was built in 1903 on designs by Barouh and Amaron the site of an older building destroyed by sabotage from the Bulgarian army in April of the same year. It belonged to Jake Abbot. The Turkish Sultan Abdlmecit I was a guest here in 1858, when he visited Thessaloniki. Later the building housed the Thessaloniki branch of the Imperial Ottoman Bank. Today it is the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki.

Villa Allatini It is located between Plutonos and Queen (Vasilis) Olgas sand Kydonion streets in the Depot district. It was built before 1888 to designs made by Vitaliano Poselli and in 1909 became used as the residence of the deposed Turkish sultan Abdul Hamit II. In 1926 it briefly housed the newly founded University of Thessaloniki and two new wings were added in 1929. Later the building became the 424 Military Hospital. Today, Villa Allatini houses the Prefecture of Central Macedonia offices. Some residents say it looks like a doll house!

Hatzidimoula Mansion On the corner of Ermou & Karolou Dil street. It was built in 1924, by the architect Filizis Dimitrios. Today the Deposits and Loans Fund of Greece is housed in the building.

Roman Forum

Ancient Agora Just a few blocks away from the bustling Aristotelous Square lies the quiet, Roman heart of the ancient city, the Roman Forum, also known as “Ancient Agora”

Monument

The Agora was constructed by the Romans in the late 1st century A.D. The Forum was the center of political and public life in Thessaloniki.

It was a large open area surrounded by buildings of various functions some of which were elegant, impressive buildings, thus displaying the financial prosperity of the city, especially during the Hellenistic and Roman period of its history because of its growing strategic importance.

Being the social, religious and administrative center of the city, it was connected to all the main streets, like the roman Via egnatia to its southern section. They were beautifully decorated with arches, cloisters and fountains. Inside the agora you will be able to see the restored conservatory with its stands and scene, elements and parts of columns that once formed the ancient agora arcade, and well-crafted mosaic floors.

The extremely well preserved “Cryptoporticus” semi- subterranean corridors are of special interest.

Beautiful artifacts and rare pictures along with some really informative presentations about the city’s historic past await you there.

Early in Greek history (18th century-8th century BC), free-born male land-owners who were citizens would gather in the agora for military duty or to hear statements of the ruling king or council. Later, the agora also served as a marketplace where merchants kept stalls or shops to sell their goods.

The archaeological excavations revealed this treasure in 1966, while its findings revealed important topographic and historical information about the city. A large number of silver coins, stone and marble sculptures were also found and are now exhibited in museums.

Restoration efforts started in 1989. The result of these efforts can be seen today in this beautiful, easily accessible archaeological site.

THE BEST OF THESSALONIKI

Bus #22 is one of the best-kept secrets of the neighborhood and is an attraction surely worthy of its view. Far from urban panic, climbs on the quietest (and narrow) streets of the city, guides you to neighborhoods-scenes which are an absolute delight and this saves you from a rocky uphill and downhill journey (the route began operation in 2010). Oh, and when you see the bus coming, simply wave your arm to remind the bus driver that your intention is to ride and not simply enjoy the sunshine at the bus stop. Once aboard, you’ll cut off a ticket, sit down and then start your winding ride.

You will spend 40 to 45 minutes on it. Also, the driver keeps his roundabout, starting and ending at the end of the Olympiados. You will love this small yet exciting journey for a variety of reasons. First of all, it looks like a mini-touring coach or a children’s toy. On the outside he has painted paintings with all the mural clichés and urges in a playful font “We go uphill”.

The Walls

Kastra The Thessaloniki Walls (Fortress) are the result of a long building process and continuous maintenance, that dates back in the foundation of the city from Cassander (316 BC) till the beginning of the 20th century, and have saved the city many times from the external enemy. The main construction phases were undertaken during the 3rd, 4th and 5th century A.D., while the expansive sections that have been better preserved belong to the Byzantine period, particularly the time of the Emperor Theodosius (4th century AD). Overall, of the 8,000m of Byzantine walls about 4,300 m remain today.

Monument

The ancient city walls of Thessaloniki (or “Kastra” meaning castle, as they are well known among citizens of the city), covered all the uppermost northern side of the city, the Acropolis, and descended the eastern and western sides down to the sea, where they continued along the seafront.

On the west side, where now lies Dimokratias Square (Vardaris district), stood a great gate, the “Golden Gate” of Thessaloniki Walls.

Moreover, a small, octagonal lower formed part of the west fortress, whose part of the remains can be seen behind the courthouse.

The western walls of the city were mainly constructed from marble benches and architraves from demolished buildings of the ancient city. The Eastern Walls begin from the Tower of Trigonio (“Triangle Tower”), at the edge of the Acropolis, where a well-known gate that has been preserved is the “Gate of Anna Palaiologou”. Further down the city center, where Syntrivani Square is today stood the “Cassandrian Gate” and close to the sea was the “Coastal Gate” of Thessaloniki Walls. One of the towers that strengthened the fortification of the walls was the White Tower.

Between 1873 and 1911 the Turkish army demolished both the sea walls in order to allow the sea breezes to cool the city, and parts of the western and eastern land walls so as the city to expand beyond its original fortified limits.

Ano Poli The area is famous for its charming ‘sprinkling’ of beautiful little restaurants or tavernas, with delicious culinary representations of Greek hospitality best enjoyed with a fresh juice, cool glass of wine, or the traditional Greek drink tsipouro spirit with a great view of the whole city.

Nearly all folks would agree that its one of the prettiest spots in Thessaloniki where its chalk full of many traditional taverns, cafes and restaurants. The streets here wind up and down with old, traditional homes, small alleyways and beautiful views on the city and on the Thermaikos Gulf. Most restaurants are located on the east side of Ano Poli, near the Portara (Great door) area. If you find yourself on the northwest side, don’t miss to visit Tsinari. The name derives from a plane tree (in Turkish ci-

nar) that grows in the area and the namesake cafe located from the 19th century on the corner of Clio and Alexandra Papadopoulou street. Opposite the big restaurant there is a fountain from the Ottoman era and next, just beside one another, are the remaining architectural features of the1925 Tsinarli Mosque.

The area was in the 20s and reception center for refugees to find this many refugee houses built next to castles.

Exhibitions organized by the National Map Library include History in Maps in (Government House, Maps of Ports of Greek Cities of the Twentieth Century in the National Research Institute, and Greek Cartography in Thessaloniki in the Twentieth Century.

Coast Line Alongside the seafront, on Nikis Avenue, you will find dozens of lovely shops, cafes, bars and restaurants in Thessaloniki, from the White Tower all the way to the port. It is ideal for all hours of the day, since you can start out in the morning drinking your coffee, relaxing in the afternoon or evening after work, shopping, or start your night outing going out for your first drink. There are many bars along the coast of Thessaloniki that stay open until the early morning hours, while it is suitable for all.

As you stroll down alongside Nikis Avenue, you will come across lots of restaurant-bars that are open from morning ‘till the wee hours of the night. There are some restaurants and taverns along the Nea Paralia Coast, up right where the Concert Hall (Megaton) is located, Also there are restaurants located inside hotels that are stated along this coast line.

You can also find traditional taverns mainly towards Botsari Street and near the Concert Hall. If you want to combine the magnificent view of the Thermaikos Gulf with your dining this is the area you definitely have to choose.

A significant monument in Christianity as well as for the city of Thessaloniki, a visit to the Agia Sophia church is an opportunity not to be missed. Standing in the plaza which bears the same name, the church can be described architecturally as a basilica with a cupola that supports the cruciform with a dome. On the eastern side, there are three apses which give form and symmetry to the building while on the west side, there is archaeological evidence of a covered gallery. It has been determined that the original Agia Sophia church as constructed sometime during the 4th century and was dedicated to the “Wisdom of God”, immediately after the triumph and establishment of Christianity by the Decree of Mediolanon in 313 A.D. and the 1st Ecumenical Synod in 325 A.D.. Following later construction works in the Justinian Period (6th century) or possibly later, during the 7th-8th centuries, the church was given its current form. Fires and earthquakes have led to slight damage, yet overall is in marvelous condition.

Agia Sophia

This church is dedicated to Christ and to serve “the true Word and Wisdom of God”. Fascinatingly, the church was erected upon the original location of an Early Christian Basilica that existed in the same location. Another, similar example of a domed transitional cross-insquare church that features a peristoon is located in the city of Istanbul and is also named Agia Sophia.

The Vlatadon Monastery in the Ano Poli (Upper, Old Town) is the only one left of the many that existed in Byzantine Thessaloniki and in the area surrounding it, in the foothills and on the slopes of Mount Hortiatis. It was founded in the middle of the 14th century by the Vlataioi brother monks, possibly with the support of Anna Palaiologue, who was in Thessaloniki at that time. The panorama from the monastery looks out over the city, reaching in the far distance the peaks of Mount Olympus. Out of the old buildings of the monastery, only the chancery (14th century) remains, called “The church of the Transfiguration of the Savior” even though the monastery was actually dedicated to the Almighty. The church was built on the site of an older building, the frescoes and other elements dating from the 11th century.

This monastery never ceases to amaze both visitors and residents alike! There is special attention noted to the building and the Catholic features of the original building which bleed through the many repairs and restorations. The unique inner wall is a perfect example of the style of the second half of the 14th century.

Agia Aikaterini or St. Catherine church (13th century), is emblematic of the architecture of the Macedonian School. Agia Aikaterini is a cruciform church with a central dome and four smaller domes at the corners. It is an exceptionally stunning building with many fascinating characteristics. The church lies high above the city, overlooking Thessaloniki from the Western walls of the Ano Poli (Upper Town). Through careful restoration, the façade of the church is in an excellent state of preservation and retains its original form with the domes supported over expertly decorated arches. Built from bricks of the surrounding area, the architecture and décor are breathtaking when viewed in-person. The masterful architecture of both the brickwork and the marble pieces that have been incorporated give the impression the walls have been embroidered. During the Ottoman Rule which lasted for nearly five centuries, the was converted into a mosque.

The church of Agios (Saint) Dimitrios (Demetrius), the patron saint of Thessaloniki, was first built in the early 4th century (306) as a small house over the vault of the Roman baths in which the Saint was martyred. A century later the sub-prefect Leontius, cured of a serious illness by the grace of the Saint, as he believed, built in the place of house the magnificent basilica, which at that time dominated over the whole city. In the 7th century, this monument of early Christianity was destroyed by fire, not aided by the fact that its roof was of wood.

It was immediately rebuilt, more or less in its original form, but was once more burnt in the fire of 1917. After the destruction of 1917, the Macedonian architect, A. Zachos, started the reconstruction of the church, preserving what was left after the fire. Zachos gave all the new sections of the building their original form, even the roof, now concrete, was built like the old wooden roof.

Saint Demetrius

Saint Demetrius crypt museum The crypt of Saint Demetrius has been an archaeological site since its discovery in 1918. After 1950, some of the sculptures that survived the great fire of 1917 were transferred by Saint Palakanides in the area of the fountain in an effort to remodel the whole place.

In the years 1985-1988, excavations were conducted in the north part of the Saint Demetrius Crypt, and its remains were restored. An exhibition was organized, including the excavation finds as well as the antiquities that were rescued from the catastrophic fire. The Saint Demetrius Crypt museum contains early Christian sculptures of the 5th, 6th and 7th centuries found in the church, Byzantine sculpture from the church, dated to the llth-14th centuries, and various excavation finds (coins, pottery) dated to the 5th-14th centuries.

Shopping is one thing that you will definitely enjoy lots of during your stay in Thessaloniki.

The city offers plenty of options so that no taste or wallet is left unsatisfied. It’s more than certain that you will find Thessaloniki city center shopping area extremely convenient. All you have to do is step inside and wander around the “square” that is formed by four major streets: Egnatia Street, Ethnikis Amynis Sreet, Nikis Avenue and Venizelou Street. In this area you may find yourself from being lost in a department store or staring the storefront of an international brand to discovering a unique bargain in an independent local brand or tasting delicacies in the famous food markets of Thessaloniki.

simiski Avenue is without compare the major axis of Thessaloniki city center shopping district. Tsimiski is a 1.2 kilometers in lenth and runs through the the heart of Thessaloniki, parallel to the sea. The famed street is actually named after loannis Tsimiskis, a Byzantine Emperor known for his struggles against the Bulgarians, although prior to the Balkan Wars it was known as The Second Parallel, counting from the seafront of the city. Before the 1900s it used to connect the eastern city walls to the west side of the city. Unfortunately the Great Fire of 1917 destroyed the Avenue. Ernest Hebrard, a French architect, was assigned the redesign of Thessaloniki city center after the Fire that wrecked approximately 32% of Thessaloniki and more than half of its commercial shops. Part of this design was Tsimiski in its current form. Tsimiski Avenue is extended from Aggelaki Str. by the International Trade Fair area to lonos Dragoumi Str., right after Venizelou Avenue. Along Tsimiski you will find many boutiques, fashion shops, delicatessens, large bookstores and errant venders. It’s the street where you can find famous international brands such as Zara, H&M, Massimo Dutti, Diesel, Intimisimi and many others. Moreover, you will come across with five multi-storey department stores; Notos Galleries, Kanellopoulos, Marks & Spencer, Fena fresh and the shopping center “Plateia” with plenty of stores, restaurants, cafes and entertainment options with the famous “Odeon” multiplex cinemas located

on Tsimiski Avenue, near Aristotelous Square. If lucky, you may discover some brand names at real bargain prices there. Your walk will most likely be accompanied by live music, since many local and some foreign less known bands perform on Tsimiski Avenue especially during the Christmas season but also throughout the year.

Agias Sofias st. (vertical to Tsimiski st.) has been restricted to cars and was made a pedestrian street, but its final form is still under construction. It is a beautiful shopping area where you can find some local brands with a very good value for money concept. Agia Sofia Street should not be missed when it comes to shopping. Some less expensive fashion stores selling stylish clothes and accessories and one or two modern cafes and patisseries lie in this area. On the crossroad of Agia Sofia Street and Ermou Street you will encounter the well-known Agia Sofia church which was one of the few buildings left intact by the Great Fire of 1917.

Right on the corner of Ermou and Agias Sofias Streets lies the known to the city’s residents as Red House, a building of remarkable architecture dated back to 1928. This building houses many rumors and myths of being haunted and doomed. On the neighboring to Agia Sofia streets and alleys, like Agias Theodoras, the visitor can discover some more vintage fashion stores and boutiques. Don’t forget to take your time and have a coffee in one of the plenty cafes around, where you can relax in a quite environment in Thessaloniki city center shopping area.

These streets are also very popular with locals for its coffee shops and bars that stay open till late at night even on weekdays, so, if you feel like it, take a break and mingle with them in one of the stylish cafes. Although on all of the above Streets the customer will find some low cost shops, Egnatia Avenue is the place for those with a stricter budget. In this area, you will encounter tattoo shops, bohemian fashion and accessories boutiques and some stores that sell second hand music CDs, LPs, collectible magazines and books at low prices. The odor of the herb sticks sold by errant venders in the area is heavy but pleasant. Of course once you are there, check out Kamara monument (“Arch of Galerius”), Navarinou Plaza and Rotonda.

While walking in the center of the city you will soon discover that pretty much anything you can imagine is for sale; you just have to find the right place and shop to suit you. Take your time and enjoy your shopping adventure!

Shopping in Thessaloniki is not limited in the city center, and nowadays people tend to choose big department stores, malls and hypermarkets, that offer easy access by car, ample parking and good prices. Every Saturday, these stores are filled with shoppers from countries from all over the region; hence we feel that some info will interest you. Large stores are located at the east part of the city, towards the airport and are really easy to access:

From the city center drive towards the airport (go towards the seaside Meg.Alexandrou Ave. and follow it eastbound). If you take the ring road, exit towards the airport at the Kalamaria exit (NOT the Halkidiki exit). From Halkidiki, you take the turn towards the airport and then towards Thessaloniki and Kalamaria.

By bus:Take any eastbound bus towards the IKEA terminal (A.Z.IKEA). Nevertheless, have in mind that‚ the distances between the stores are not walkable.

Mediterranean Cosmos is located 11km east of the city center. It first opened its doors in October 2005.

Since then, it has made its way to the resident’s daily life and it is now a very popular destination not only for the locals, but also for residents of nearby cities and towns and for tourists heading to Halkidiki, who stop by. Apart from approximately 200 stores, it also features 30 restaurants and coffee shops, 11 multiplex cinemas, a playroom for kids, a large super market, hairdressers & manicure services, a church and so on. Although it is considerably more expensive than shops in the city center and other malls of Thessaloniki, as a result of the variety of stores and activities that it features, Mediterranean Cosmos is a quite busy shopping destination, especially during Friday afternoons and of course on Saturdays, so it is probably best to avoid these days. The Mall offers large parking space for cars, motorcycles and buses with a ticket came into use (1,5€). Despite the relatively small fee, the new system was not received well by the majority of the customers, something that led many visitors to avoid its use, thus preferring to park their cars in the nearby roads around the Mall.

MEGA OUTLET If 400 brands, from Adidas and Puma to Diesel and Calvin Klein, in extremely low prices and 850 free parking spaces seem to you like a good idea, then you should not miss a visit to Mega Outlet, the biggest discount shopping center in Balkans. The location of the shopping center at 43, Georgikis Sholis Avenue in Pilea Thessaloniki provides easy access to both the residents of

Square Square

Today, Aristotelous Square is one of the most famous and recognizable landmarks in Greece and practically inseperable with the city of Thessaloniki itself!

This large, plaza-style square has held an important role in the cultural as well as socio-political life not only of the city, but for Greece as a whole. Large public gatherings and political speeches have been organized in Aristotelous Square, such as the rally for Macedonia in 1992, and may occur sparingly and in an organized manner throughout the year. The square is used for many different cultural events, such as festivals and the annual Christmas village and carnival celebrations which offer fun for fun-goers of all ages. The energy of the square beckons life and the numerous cafes and bars that line up the square make it popular with the younger generations.

The two quarter-circle sides of the square are occupied by important buildings. On the left is Electra Palace Hotel, which is one of the best five-star hotels in Thessaloniki and on the right is one of the city’s most famous movie theatres, the Olympion Theatre cinema, site of the annual Thessaloniki International Film Festival.

Aristotelous Square is the main ‘city square’ of Thessaloniki and is located on Nikis Avenue (on the city’s waterfront), in the city center. It was designed by French architect Ernest Hebrard in 1918, but most of the square was built in the 1950’s. Many buildings surrounding the central square have since been renovated mid its northern parts were largely restored in the 2000s.

Before the Great Fire of 1917, the city lacked much of what was considered to be “essential” in European architecture. Under Ottoman rule, the city grew without the guidance of a general plan for expansion and had narrow streets. The absence of squares in pre-1917 Thessaloniki was addressed by Ernest Hebrard, who proposed a number of large squares in the city, including Megalou Alexandrou Square (“Alexander the Great Square”), now Aristotelous Square, all of which have re-shaped the city’s numerous social spaces.

There is no redevelopment currently under consideration, but numerous proposals have been submitted over the past twenty years. When Thessaloniki became the European capital of culture during 1997, the city council put together an organizing committee for the redevelopment of the waterfront of the city, including the redevelopment of Aristotelous Square. Of the many designs that were presented to the committee, some of them were very radical and others less so. In almost all proposals, there were provisions for a marina or a similar extension of the square to the waterfront, as well as a wheel similar to the London Eye in London. Up to date, no official redevelopment scheme has been made official.

Transportation in Thessaloniki The only option for public transportation, while the metro construction is underway, in Thessaloniki is the public buses. There is an elaborate network of bus lines connecting most parts of the city and the suburbs. The bus line that connects the airport to the domestic bus (KTEL) terminal is the express 1X (which is called the 1N if it’s past 22:00) line.

All buses are run by OASTH. The ticket costs 1.10 Euro when bought from the kiosks, or 0.50 for people entitled to the reduced price (over 65 of age, handicapped and students), except the tickets from the airport that cost 2 euros with an applicable discount of 1 euro for students and senior citizens.

All buses are air conditioned and many are suitable for handicapped people. In order to reach some destinations, one may have to combine two or three buses. The ticket that is valid for 70 minutes after its validation and does not need to be validated again in subsequent buses costs 1.2 euros, or half price for students and seniors and children under the age of 6 use the bus free of charge. These tickets allow for unlimited boarding during the time specified (70

minutes). Students pay half the price for tickets, as long as they are holders of a valid student card. Information on routes, schedules, etc. is given at the Information Centre: call 185 daily, 07.00-22.00. Taxis are available throughout the city, 24 hours a day. Along the main city streets you can find a taxi only in designated places, easily identified by the “TAXI” sign. In all other streets, taxis will stop when hailed everywhere.

It is not uncommon for passengers to share a ride, if it is suitable for all of them. During off hours, taxis are stationed in “piazzas” waiting for customers; ask anyone for the closest piazza and get in the first taxi in line. Taxis are also readily available outside major hotels. Surcharges may apply, depending on the time of the ride, luggage, airport pickup, appointment, etc. Fares change frequently and one should check for the latest fares when entering a taxi: they are always posted in a visible spot, usually in front of the co-driver’s seat.

A metro line has recently started to be constructed. When finished (the completion is projected for 2023) its length will be 9.6 km with 13 stops, while its extension towards Ka-

lamaria and Stavroupoli will add 10. 8km and 10 stops more. Works have started in summer 2006 and traffic in the city is expected to be seriously disrupted during the course of construction (at least 5 years), so visitors should be prepared for heavy traffic. The work is being constructed by Athens Metro, but the trains and stations will be more sophisticated than those in Athens.

The Macedonia Bus Station is on the west side of the city and is located on 244, Giannitson Street (T 2310 595400, email: info@ktelmacedonia.gr). It is the major bus station for travelling around Greece by bus. To provide passengers with the best possible service, tickets may also be purchased from the ticket office which is located in the heart of Thessaloniki.

If you wish to travel by train you will have to go to OSE train station which is located in the west side of the city on 28, Monastiriou Street.

The New Railway Station of Thessaloniki is the central passenger railway station. Inaugurated in June 12th, 1961, the passenger station replaced the old and much smaller passenger station which now handles the city’s cargo rail, hence the name “new railway station” which has stayed on since. Although unchanged since the 1960s, it remains the largest and busiest railway station built in Greece. The New Railway Station currently features large waiting areas, a central hall, cafes, restaurants and a shopping center.

Macedonia Airport is the second biggest airport in Greece, located 14km away from the city center and serving 3.5 million passengers per year. Located in the very heart of Thessaloniki, this unmistakable, baroque-style building has housed the Bank of Athens and the offices of the Jewish newspaper “The Independent” (one of the very first newspapers in Greece) and is a silent witness to the great Jewish presence that once filled its streets with the language of Cervantes, redolent with the odors of the kitchens of Seville and Toledo, silent from Friday to Saturday in observance of Shabbat.

The Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki evolved out of this complicated matrix of historical circumstances. It is but one of several endeavors created within the structure of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki, in a building renovated by the Cultural Capital of Europe Organization Thessaloniki 1997. The Museum includes artifacts from its permanent collections, photographic exhibitions and the Simon Marks Photographic Exhibition Thessaloniki, Sephardic Metropolis.

On the ground level are monumental stones and inscriptions that were once found in the great Jewish necropolis that lay to the east of the city walls. Accompanying these stones are a series of photographs showing the cemetery, as it was in 1914, and its visitors.

Central to the first floor is a narrative history of the Jewish presence in Thessaloniki from the 3rd century BCE until the Second World War. This exhibit was designed at the kibbutz Beth Lohamei Ha-Gettaoth in Israel and its reproduction in Thessaloniki was funded by “The Michael Marks Charitable Trust”. Complementing this exhibition are many artifacts from the collections of the Museum, giving the visitor the chance to have an image of religious and everyday life of the vibrant Jewish Community of Thessaloniki that was prevalent prior to WWII. Today, the State of Israel is collaborating with the city to one day have a new, more robust Jewish Museum in the city, but plans are not definite.

A fabulous and impressive exhibition of musical instruments from the ancient, the Byzantine and post Byzantine times in a restored three-story building in the Ladadika district is located in the center of Thessaloniki.

The museum belongs to the Bank of Piraeus and opened its doors to the public in 1997. The museum has an exhibition with more than 200 musical instruments in display, which existed between 2,800 BC and the beginning of the 20th century. The instruments were accurately reconstructed with the help of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki aiming to be the museum’s initial collection.

The instruments were reconstructed on the basis of pictorial and literary evidence (pottery, sculpture, figurines, illuminated Byzantine manuscripts) using the same materials mentioned in the original sources. Each instrument is accompanied by the pictorial evidence of its existence. It is possible for many of those instruments to hear their original sounds.

A distinctive and impressive instrument is the seven- stringed forminx (ancient guitar) coming from the Minoan period as the double pipes with an air chamber coming from 5th century BC.

Thessaloniki Concert Hall was created in order to satisfy the need of the city for a venue that could house not only artistic, but also various other activities

The Thessaloniki Concert Hall is built along the coast of the city, near the Posidonio Athletic Center of Thessaloniki, in an area of 18, 000 square meters large. The principal purpose of the Thessaloniki Concert Hall construction was to provide a contemporary cultural and conference center of international standards with the capacity to host various events, including concerts, ballet, theatre and opera, cultural and art expositions and conferences. It was thus designed as a building that would satisfy all the requirements for this purpose as well as becoming a landmark for the city. Therefore, the Thessaloniki Concert Hall has all the characteristics that make it important: exceptional acoustics, a main hall of 1.400 seats, a reception hall (foyer), the rooms of the administrative and technical offices, as well as all the necessary facilities for the support of the events (dressing rooms, rehearsal studios, repositories for instruments etc.). Special provision exists for people with disabilities, by means of appropriate seats and elevators. Moreover, the external appearance of the building has been entirely harmonized with the history of Thessaloniki, combining elements from its byzantine part as well as from its contemporary cosmopolitan role.

Designed by the renowned architect Arata Isozaki, M2 (Building 2) adorns the city with a unique construction that epitomizes the virtues of modern architecture, Geometrical lines, extended glass surfaces and elements of steel compose an image of imposing simplicity. Filled with natural light and enjoying a superb view to the sea, M2’s foyer is a vast space of sophisticated aesthetics. Equipped with cutting-edge technology and having an exceptional infrastructure, the Amphitheatron Hall can seat 500, whereas the Flat Hall, which can seat 300, can be subdivided by means of moveable partition to form three smaller rooms of 100 or two of 100 and 200 seats. Underneath the M2 building lies a two-level underground parking lot of I 11.800 square meters, offering seats to over 230 vehicles. Consistent with its cultural role, the Thessaloniki Concert Hall is proud to house a Music Library and a Museum of Musical Instruments in its new building. Regular performances began in May 2000. The Thessaloniki Concert Hall is expected to decisively contribute to the cultural, social and economic development of the city and is a focal point of the cityscape.
