2012

The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation® (PDF®) is a leading national presence in Parkinson’s disease research, education and public advocacy. We are working for the nearly one million people in the US living with Parkinson’s by funding promising scientific research and supporting people with Parkinson’s, their families and care partners through educational programs and services. Since our founding in 1957, PDF has dedicated over $90 million to fund the research of leading scientists throughout the world and over $37 million to support national education and advocacy programs.

“Creative expression helps to focus on the whole self, integrating abilities and disabilities.” The 2012 Creativity and Parkinson’s calendar is dedicated to Carol Blann, a friend of the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation (PDF) and founding member of the Creativity and Parkinson’s project, who passed away on July 2, 2011. Ms. Blann’s photographs were featured in three of the annual wall calendars and a quilt panel that she created was part of the first Parkinson’s Quilt. Nearly 1,000 individuals voted amongst five photographs by Ms. Blann to decide this year’s calendar cover image.

Creativity

& Parkinson’s The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation proudly presents its 2012 Creativity and Parkinson’s calendar, showcasing the inspiring creations of 13 artists living with Parkinson’s disease (PD).

Research suggests that painting, sculpting, dancing and other creative activities may temporarily ease Parkinson’s symptoms. This calendar is part of PDF’s Creativity and Parkinson’s Project, an initiative that encourages those living with Parkinson’s to explore their creativity and its potentially beneficial effects.

This initiative is also home to the Parkinson’s Quilt, the first global awareness project of its kind in the Parkinson’s community. A panel from the Quilt is featured for the month of April, which is recognized as Parkinson’s Awareness Month. To see the incredible work of all our artists, including those featured in this year’s calendar, view the online gallery at www.pdf.org/creativity. To submit your own artwork, contact PDF at (800) 457-6676 or email creativity@pdf.org. Due to the early release date of this year’s calendar, many PDF and other community events could not be confirmed in time for our print deadline. To view an up-to-date listing of these events, visit www.pdf.org/event_calendar.

MARGARET TENNANT | NEW CANAAN, CT

Milford Sound, South Island, New Zealand | Photography

“I have had Parkinson’s disease for 11 years. I have rough days now and then, but have found that Parkinson’s need for daily rest and exercise helps me focus on living a healthier lifestyle. Leaving a demanding and stressful job has also allowed me the time to develop a love for photography.”

“My Parkinson's diagnosis in 1999 expanded my circle of friends to include many people who are also affected by Parkinson's. Through creating art, I have the opportunity to explore my new life, which has been shaped by Parkinson's and this network of friends.”

ALAN RUBIN | DELAPLANE, VA

Drum Roll | Oil on Canvas

“When friends ask me what I'll do if my hands get too shaky to create such detailed paintings, I tell them I'll become an abstract expressionist. Picasso once said that painting everyday is like keeping a diary. I am excited to look back at what I will paint post-diagnosis, to see what my ‘diary’ tells me.”

Flowers of the Field | Embroidered Quilt Panel

“The saying ‘Flowers of the Field’ inspired me to create this quilt. It means we each have our time, and then we pass, like different flowers in a field. Parkinson's is different for each person, although we all have common symptoms. We're all different tulips; all beautiful and unique.”

GARY TURCHIN | OAKLAND, CA

House, Through the Flowers | Art Markers on Photographic Print, Digitally Remastered

“As I sail on the uneasy waters of Parkinson's (diagnosed in 2006), both my anchor and rudder are creativity. Words, pictures, images, stories, they keep this vessel on-course, and rooted to its nature. My little boat may sway, suffer waves of doubt, there may be leaks and other breaches, but the captain is concentrated, has no time to dawdle, and the destinations, like little harbors filled with exotic and unknown wonders, pepper the coast and await their discoveries.”

“After I was diagnosed with Parkinson's, I had to resign from full-time work. With the extra time I had, I began custom designing wooden gifts and toys. Parkinson’s gave me the opportunity to utilize my energy in a creative way. I encourage everyone to find ways to use their limitations as stepping stones to great achievements.”

In My Mother's Garden | Bead Collage

“At the age of five, I decided I was going to be a fashion designer one day. My career followed the art and design path until I received my Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2005. My diagnosis changed my life in many ways, but not my art; I continue to paint and create collages, using beads, gold leaf and fabrics.”
