Hvalfjörður

Hallgrímskirkja í Saurbæ The church site Saurbær at Hvalfjarðarstönd was once home to the priest and hymn poet Hallgrímur Pétursson (1614-1674) and the present church Hallgrímskirkja, consecrated in 1957, is named after him. Hallgrímur served as a priest in Saurbær from 1651 to 1659 during which he wrote his most notable work, the Passion Hymns. The hymns follow the Passion of Christ with great empathy. The hymns have been published more than 80 times in Icelandic and translated to numerous languages. Hallgrímskirkja is generally open to the public during visiting hours.
