Lets have FUN this summer!

Spring and summer are chock full of great Scouting events for Simon Kenton Council Scouts!

The first weekend in May is circled on my calendar for Thunderbase 2018. This is a “don’t miss” event with 5,000 Scouts and leaders from across the Council’s 18 counties expected to attend.

Scouts are sure to have an experience of a lifetime, with shooting sports, inflatables, Scout skills, hands-on displays, an arena show, fireworks and lots more.

Summer camps are gearing up to be the best yet! Camp Falling Rock will host 3 sessions of Boy Scout camp, and then transition to Webelos resident camp.

We’ve added a third week for Webelos by popular demand – we hope you don’t get left out! An addition to this summer’s program for Boy Scouts at CFR is mountain biking. We’ve added 70 new tents as well, to help make the experience even more enjoyable.

Chief Logan Scout Reservation is quickly filling up. New at CLR this summer is a STEM Lab, which will feature robotics and 3-D

printing in addition to their ever-popular traditional program offerings.

A second week at Camp Oyo has been added for this summer, doubling our capacity at this popular camp.

With the improvements from 2017 to the dam, there are even more activities in which Scouts can participate, including boating, kayaking, canoeing and fishing.

And new to Camp Lazarus this summer is STEM camp for Cub Scouts. Two sessions are offered, one for Cub Scouts (grades 2-3) and one for Webelos and Arrow of Light Scouts (grades 4-5).

Each features the choice of five different Labs – Robotics & Engineering, Space Exploration, Drones, Chemistry and Biology – for Scouts to focus on during their week.

With so much planned for Scouts from May to August, it is sure to be an exciting summer for Scouts in the Simon Kenton Council. See you at camp!

Many thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Columbus for its generous grant of $5,000 or Simon Kenton Council's Urban Scoutreach program. These funds will help make it possible for disadvantaged Cub Scouts to participate in Day Camp. New Roof for Bucher Lodge at Camp Lazarus

Thanks to the generous support of Martha G. Staub and Elisabeth State funds of The Columbus Foundation, Bucher Lodge at Camp Lazarus has a new roof.

Little Syrup, Still Lots of Fun Volunteers tapped more than 1,000 trees for this year's Maple Syrup Festival at Camp Lazarus.

Even though the weather was not ideal for maple syrup production, that did not stop more than 1,200 people from enjoying a pancake breakfast, outdoor cooking, whistle making, blacksmith demonstrations and more over two weekends at camp.

A: Using the same Scouting program offered to older boys, the organization will deliver a program for older girls that is scheduled to launch in February 2019 through which girls will be able to earn the highest rank of Eagle Scout.

Youth Protection Training Has Been Updated The BSA has announced that they have made updates to their Youth Protection program as an ongoing effort to protect youth. The updated course takes an hour to complete and covers topics like bullying, neglect, exposure to violence, physical and emotional abuse, and child sexual abuse.

April 14 Jr. Gardener – Bear Rank At Franklin Park Conservatory, Bears will explore the science of compost including the Conservatory’s Red Wigglers-the worms that keep the gardens growing healthy. Bears will take home seeds to plant a small garden of their own, and will complete steps five through seven of the Fur, Feathers and Fern required adventures.

April 14 Robotics Merit Badge At Math Plus Academy, Boy Scouts work in small groups as they discuss the official Robotics Merit Badge workbook and have fun solving problems with their robotic creations.

April 27-29 Leave No Trace Trainer Course Become certified as a Leave No Trace Trainer which equips each participant with the ability to understand, demonstrate and teach minimum impact techniques as well as lead outdoor ethics conversations and conduct Leave No Trace Awareness workshops.

This course is offered to all Scouters and Scouts 14 years or older. The cost is $65 per person.

Adult April 13-15/May 18-20 Wood Badge Enhance your career, volunteerism and community service. Wood Badge is designed for all unit, district and council leaders of any BSA program. Many Scouters consider Wood Badge to be the "mountaintop experience" of their Scouting lives. This course consists of two 3-day weekends at Camp

Falling Rock and at least one meeting in-between.

Weekends start early Friday morning and end late Sunday afternoon.

Cost is $270 and scholarships are available.

This all day course is designed as an introduction for Cub Scout Leaders interested in adding a camping component to their Pack activities. April 21 BALOO Training & Scoutmaster Outdoor Leader Training (Chief Logan Reservation).

BALOO Training is for Cub Scout Leaders interested in adding a camping component to their Pack activities. Scoutmaster Outdoor Leader Training is for Scoutmasters looking to complete their specific training. Cost is $20 for BALOO (overnight required) Saturday at 8:45 a.m. until Sunday at 1:00 p.m. $15 for Scoutmaster Outdoor Skills Saturday only from 8:45 am to 9:30 pm.

MAY Youth May 11-13 Canoe Merit Badge Clinic This class teaches your Scouts paddling competency including all requirements for the Canoeing Merit Badge.

Cost is $30 per participant and includes a patch.

This event is from Friday at 7:30 pm to Sunday at 5:00 pm at Alum Creek – Galena.

May 11-13 VOA Shooting Campout Come out to Camp Lazarus for the VOA Shooting Campout. Enjoy activities like rifle and pistol shooting, archery and a scavenger hunt.

There is also a beach party on Saturday Night, so bring your Hawaiian shirts. Cost is $10 per person and units provide their own food.

May 12 Free Skate Night at The Chiller!

The OhioHealth Chiller Ice Haus invites you and your Scout out for a night of free skating. This event is free to Scouts and $7.00 per person for friends and family.

Adult May 12 Den Chief Training A Den Chief is a Boy Scout, Venturer or Sea

Scout assisting a Cub Scout Den. In this training, prospective and current Den Chiefs will learn how to assist a Den Leader with planning and conducting engaging den meetings and fun activities. Adult leaders taking this training will learn how a Den Chief can help your Dens and Pack. Boy Scouts should be at least 1st class or have the approval of your Scoutmaster to take this course. Venture and Sea Scouts should receive Advisor approval. Cost is $10 per person.

May 19 Wilderness First Aid 16 Hour Course.

The Wilderness First Aid course provides an intensive 16 hours of training covering injury assessment, rescuer safety, bleeding, shock,

orthopedic injuries, longterm patient care and treatment with materials at hand during practice sessions. This event is open to those Scouts 14 years old and older. This course costs $75 and each course is limited to 20 participants.

June 1-3 Rappelling Clinic Join us for this weekend training clinic combining rappelling skills with fun and fellowship. June 22 22nd Annual Boy Scout Golf Scramble Join us for the 22nd Annual Boy Scout Golf Scramble at the Chillicothe Jaycee’s Golf Course. Registration begins at 7:30 am with a Shotgun Start beginning at 8:30 am.

This event includes a golf scramble, skills contest, side games and a trophy for the winning team.

July 1-6 VenturingFest 2018 This is a special Scouting event at the Summit Bechtel Reserve open to registered Venturers, Venturing-age Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts, Explorers and adult leaders.

This six day high adventure experience invites participants to explore the best that the Summit has to offer. As if the adrenaline pumping activities weren’t enough, VenturingFest attendees will also get to jam out to concerts and meet new friends. Cost for youth is $500 and adults are $400 if paid

The Columbus Clippers have been a partner of the Scouts for 19 seasons and have invited thousands of Scouts and their family members to the stadium to enjoy hotdogs, watch fellow Scouts throw out the first pitch, to run the bases, and to camp on the field after the game.

The “Pitch for Scouting” campaign has been vital to our spring recruiting efforts over the years and is designed to recruit new Scouts during the spring and provide exciting programming for existing Scouts.

Positions are available at Camp Oyo in West Portsmouth, Camp Falling Rock in Newark, and Chief Logan Reservation in Ray. Are You Ready? Thunderbase 2018 Thundebase is about a month away, so be sure you and your Scouts are ready for an awesome weekend. Here are some frequently asked questions and answers: Q: Can my Scout earn achievements?

A: Scouts will have the opportunity to work on several achievements while at Thunderbase.

Q: Is food provided?

A: Food is available for purchase on Saturday through a variety of vendors. Units are encouraged to bring their own food and eat together for the weekend.

Q: Do we have to follow a schedule on Saturday?

A: Participants are expected to attend the opening ceremony at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, but Scouts are able to determine their schedule for the day. You definitely will not want to miss the big show Saturday evening, which includes a concert and fireworks.

Yes, We're Already Planning for Fall Recruitment We're taking a new approach to fall recruitment training. We want our volunteers to learn through experience. Two trainings will be hosted in April. At these trainings, volunteers will get to experience a fall recruitment event, sit through a real parent orientation night and even go through the youth station. Who should attend? Cubmasters, Pack Committee Chairs, and anyone in your Pack engaged in the recruitment process.

Facebook Discussion Groups Provide Resources for Parents and Leaders A new resource for parents and leaders is now available on Facebook. The Simon Kenton Council has created Facebook Discussion Groups as an additional means of supporting your efforts as a Scouting parent and leader. Here you can share your family’s Scouting experience, ask questions and benefit from the comments that other Scout leaders have shared.

There is a group for each level of Cub Scouts as well as ones for Boy Scouts, Venturing, Commissioners, and Family Scouting. Find these groups at www.facebook.com/SKCBSA under 'Groups' on the left hand side and join the group(s) that interests you.

Track Advancements on the Go The Boy Scouts of America has developed a new Scouting App to help track advancements on the go. Scouting adventures can happen anywhere and with the new app for iPhone and Android, Scouters and parents will be able to track those adventures anywhere, too.

The Scouting app connects to Scoutbook.com to sync existing advancement data. The information is also stored on your device, so you can use the Scouting app offline.

Why is Tecumseh District Volunteer Connie Ison Celebrating?

February and March are two of the busiest months in our Friends of Scouting fundraising campaign. It’s a hectic two months filled with many Blue & Gold Banquets and Courts of Honor that make the ideal venue for a Friends of Scouting presentation.

So why is Connie celebrating?

At the council's mid-campaign report meeting last month, Connie was excited to share that the Tecumseh District had exceeded the half-way point in it's family campaign. And she joined many other districts in sharing that success. In fact, to-date, the council's volunteer presenter teams have raised more than half of our 2018 family campaign goal.

Showcasing How Scouting is for Everyone

The Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio hosted World Down Syndrome Day on Sunday, March 18 at the Athletic Club of Columbus.

Local Scouts attended to showcase a series of Scouting activities for the kids and their families to experience.

This year Troop 117 from Darby Creek District helped lead the activities which included indoor fishing.

Represent Scouting at the Ohio State Fair The BSA has a booth at the Ohio State Fair and we need your help! What are we looking for? We are looking for Scouting units and families to volunteer at the booth, as well as Scouts to participate in the daily parade.

And that means, they have been super busy the last two months. Just how busy were they? Here are some stats!

•

The SKC presenter team raised more than $164,000 for local Scouting programs n February and March.

That’s nearly 1,100 “support one Scout” level gifts.

•

170 individual presentations were conducted. That averages out to nearly three presentations per day across SKC from February through March.

While this wraps the busiest time of year for Family Friends of Scouting presentations, there is still much work to happen.

Across the Simon Kenton Council, our teams of volunteer presenters have an aggressive goal of raising $437,250 for local Scouting programs. We are over half way there with $223,755 raised at the time of printing.

So, where do your Friends of Scouting dollars go and how can you help? Simply put, Friends of Scouting dollars fund the operations of the Simon Kenton Council. This includes the upkeep and maintenance of our camp properties, camp scholarships and uniform assistance for Scouts in-need, the convenience of three service centers, adult volunteer training opportunities and insurance coverage for our Scouts and Scouters.

Each day the Scout booth features a theme along with activities to coordinate with the theme, so sign up for your favorite.

Scouts 14 years or older are also invited to volunteer as individuals to assist with activities and events at the booth.

The fair runs from July 25 to August 5 and the Scout booth is located at the fair’s Youth Discovery Center, Lausche Building. Youth and adults who volunteer for at least five hours get free entry into the Fair for the day, a participation patch, and a meal ticket. For more information please visit skcscouts.org/statefair.

CELEBRATING THE COUNCIL’S SUCCESS The close of a successful year in 2017 allowed for celebration at the start of 2018. Council President, Gregory Comfort, Scout Executive, Jeff Moe and Past Council Commissioner, Bruce Boyle accepted the council’s Silver Journey to Excellence recognition. Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers and families for making 2017 a year to celebrate. What a great way to start the first quarter of 2018!

SCOUT NIGHT WITH THE COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS On Saturday, March 17 over 600 Scouts, Scouters and their family members cheered on the Blue Jackets as they beat the Ottawa Senators. The night was full of fun and celebration including a Blue Jackets win.

Among all the Scouts were the council's top 150 popcorn sellers including the top 10 popcorn sellers who got to enjoy some pregame fun sitting on the team's bench or in the penalty box during warm ups, ride the zamboni and watch the game in a suite.

The night also celebrated our partnership with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation and OhioHealth Chiller Ice Rinks. Our partnership through Skate Into Scouting has been vital in our fall recruitment campaign success over the years. Thank you for your continued support of Scouting.
