Formal Recruitment Hannah Steketee

Hi lovely sisters, My name is Hannah Steketee, and I am the current Vice President of Membership for Sigma Kappa Beta Theta. We just had an incredibly successful recruitment, and had 11 new members pledge Sigma Kappa! All of our members were extremely helpful and did a great job of telling the Potential New Members what they would gain from joining Sigma Kappa. Our first night was themed Camp Sigma Kappa, and we decorated the house like a summer camp. We had campfire cupcakes, and marshmallows dipped in chocolate and graham cracker crumbs. The second night was philanthropy night. Our amazing Leadership Consultant painted the philanthropy posters for us, and she painted each one a different Disney movie! My favorite two were Gerontology that was themed Up, and the Maine Seacoast Mission that was themed Little Mermaid. They looked great and we were really thankful that they were done so well. For food, we did magic wands with fruit salad and kebabs, and princess cupcakes. For Preference Night, the theme was Great Gatsby. We wore black dresses and pearl necklaces, and an amazing alumni made cream puffs to give to the PNM’s. The house mom for the Chi Omega Housemom and her daughter are both Sigma Kappas, so they were able to participate in our preference ceremony with us. Recruitment went so well, because of the involvement of our alumni and the hard work and dedication from our sisters. I want to thank them one last time for being so amazing and helping me so much. Sigma’s love and mine, Hannah

Bid Day Kirsten Fleming This time of year is always exciting, because our chapter is growing and we get to share our sisterhood with more women. On bid day, September 18, we welcomed 9 new members home! Each one full of excitement and curious about the weeks that lie ahead. To welcome them home, we ate lots of food, played Minute to Win it games, and matched our new members with their heart sisters. Lots of laughs and smiles were shared on this memorable day! About a week later we welcomed two more women home, and we could not be more excited to add them to our new member class! Our new member program has already gotten off to a great start, we had our first meeting and are planning class mixers, big/little mixers, and initiation. Our wonderful new members are eager to learn about Sigma Kappa, and are anxious to get their bigs! The next few weeks are going to be filled with events, meetings, and sisterhood, but we are ready to help these 11 incredible women transform into thoughtful, inspiring, and sophisticated Sigma Kappas. New Member Class of Fall 2016: Allison Bronski, Katie Detsch, Kaitlyn Dzuroff, Shannon Haessly, Kenzi Hall, Jade Heeter, Brooke Hirsch, Quinci Jones, Shannon Patberg, Taylor Pennock, Elizabeth Weeks

Walk to end Alzheimer’s Shelbi Westfield

Participating in The Walk to End Alzheimer’s with Sigma Kappa has always been an event very close to my heart. I remember my first Alzheimer’s walk like it was yesterday. It was fall of 2014, my sophomore year at Marietta College. We arrived for the walk as a chapter at the site in Parkersburg, signed in at the registration table, and were then directed to a table covered in pinwheel flowers. There were piles of four different colored flowers, each holding a different meaning based on our personal ties to Alzheimer’s. I walked past the orange, past the blue, and stopped at the yellow. Yellow represented someone currently supporting or caring for someone with Alzheimer’s. Had I participated in this very walk one year ago I would have picked up the yellow flower, but on that day I continued walking past the yellow and reached for a purple flower to commemorate the memory of my Aunt Gloria who had just recently passed away after a long, hard fought battle with the disease.

Years prior to becoming a member of Sigma Kappa, my Aunt Gloria was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. At times it is easy to feel very alone, like no one can truly understand what it is like having a loved one who is combating such a disease. But Sigma Kappa changed this for me, because when we walk I am not alone. Seeing the sea of colored flowers walk through the streets of Parkersburg every fall reminds me that we are all fighting to diminish this disease together and have all been touched by it in some way, shape, or form. Each year we walk I am surrounded by a group of women who are passionate and driven to support a Sigma Kappa philanthropy that affects so many individuals today. We may all be walking for different reasons, but in the end we are all there to support, raise awareness, and fight to cure this debilitating disease. September 17th, 2016 was my final walk with the Beta Theta Chapter, but it most definitely will not be the last walk I participate in. Sigma Kappa has given me a tradition that I will continue to support and play an active role in until we have found a cure and Alzheimer’s disease is but a memory of the past.
