Beta Theta | Marietta College Fall 2015 What’s Inside Recruitment | Homecoming | Meeting Alumnae | Updates

An Update from Beta Theta

This fall semester has been a crazy one for sure. It was jammed pack full of events that we are excited to share.  Through recruitment, we gained 9 wonderful ladies who initiated and are more than excited to be a part of Sigma Kappa.  We had a great time at our sisterhoods, including going to Sweet Apple Farms to pick pumpkin and decorated them.  We had a wonderful time meeting so many alumnae at Homecoming and having Katie Transue (’16) represent Sigma Kappa as our homecoming candidate.  Founders’ Day was successful with our Alumnae Chapter members on November 7th.  Our chapter spent many days volunteering around town which included the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Parkersburg and helping the Marietta in Bloom beautiful gardens. We are all looking forward to what the spring 2016 semester has in store for us!

Fun Times in the Fall!

Just Do It through Recruitment By: Kelsey Schenck Fall 2015 has been an exciting semester for the Beta Theta chapter of Sigma Kappa! It has been amazing to see how much the new members have grown already in our chapter. They are all so eager to get involved and couldn’t be happier to know the house code so they can come visit whenever they like. Two of our new members are even taking on executive board positions for the upcoming year! Our Vice President of New Member Education has done an amazing job at educating our new members and making sure that they feel comfortable moving forward within this chapter. As Vice President of Membership, I have had the opportunity to learn a lot more about not just Sigma Kappa, but also about myself. I feel like this position has really helped me to grow as a person and had also helped me to appreciate everything that Sigma Kappa Beta Theta has offered me over these past four years. Senior year is flying by and I couldn’t imagine my time at college without the experiences I have at in Sigma Kappa. I am so happy to have helped in gaining the amazing nine new members that we have and I look forward to all of the things that they will do for this chapter. I am also very happy for Hannah Steketee, who will be serving on the executive board next year as the new Vice President of Membership. I know that Hannah will do an amazing job at this position and will lead our chapter in a fun and successful recruitment!

Congratulations! We would like to congratulate some alum on major life changes!  Maddie Griffiths (’15) married Matt Roberts in July  Hannah Brewer (’14) got engaged to Kevin Davis in  Ellen Schott (’13) got engaged to Brad Gies in September  Cari Koelsch (’13) married Nathan Schafer in October

Home is Wherever I’m with You By: Katie Transue

There I was on Homecoming Weekend filled with nerves and excitement, waiting to walk out onto the football field at Don Drumm stadium to find out if I had been elected Homecoming Queen. As the announcer called my name and started reading the description of all the things I’m involved in, I heard it. I heard the sound of the group of Sigma Kappa alumnae cheering me on. When I finally made it to my spot on the field, I looked up at the large crowd in the stands and I saw them. The women that I had looked up to so much as an underclassman were there, cheering me on from the stands. I no longer felt nervous, just happy. Happy that I had the opportunity to share this one special memory with these women I admired so much: my Sigma Kappa sisters. After the football game, we had the opportunity to catch up at the Alumnae Open House event. We shared laughs and memories and the alumnae reminisced about their time spent in the Sigma Kappa house living with their sisters. We spent time getting to know alumnae from earlier years and listening to stories of what Marietta was like when they went to school and comparing our experiences to theirs. The next morning we shared brunch and said our goodbyes as all of our alumnae left to return to their families and homes, wherever they may be. While we were all left to finish our studies, one thing was clear; even 50 years down the road and no matter where you are in the world, a mystic bond like Sigma Kappa can never be broken.

The Places You Go, the People You Meet By: Shelbi Westfield Alumnae from Sigma Kappa Beta Theta travel far and wide following graduation from Marietta College. As a current member of the chapter, it is always such a pleasure to meet alumnae and learn about their experiences while at Marietta, their involvements and accomplishments while on campus, and their life since leaving Marietta College. I had the opportunity to meet and alumnae of our Beta Theta Chapter while racing at the 2015 Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Massachusetts. Jaime Duck was an Athletic Training major, as well as a member of the Marietta Women’s Crew team and Sigma Kappa. Following graduation she continued her education at Marietta’s Physician’s Assistant school, and is now working as a PA in the Emergency room. The weekend I was first introduced to Jamie, she was racing in the Marietta alumnae eight boat at Head of the Charles. Talking with her about her experiences as a previous science major, collegiate athlete, and Greek woman was extremely insightful and inspiring. I was able to make eye opening comparisons between her past experiences and my current experiences, as I am involved in very similar extracurricular and also plan to attend PA school following my Undergraduate studies. Having the opportunity to meet Jaime, along with many other alumnae who once stood in the same shoes I am in right now, is nothing short of inspiring.

Welcome Home New Doves! Amanda Arrowood Groveport, OH International Business with minors in Marketing and Graphic Design I chose Sigma Kappa because it was one of the sororities that made me feel like I didn't have to impress anyone so they would like me. I also felt more at home and comfortable around the girls in Sigma Kappa.

Audrey Lusk Houston, TX Petroleum Engineering Although there are many reasons I joined Sigma Kappa, the main one is it just felt like home, from the second I walked through the door during recruitment.

Maria Mudre New Albany, OH Graphic Design with a minor in Advertisement and Public Relations I was looking for a good group of girls that I could instantly bond with, people who genuinely care about you, enjoy random adventuring and just like to have fun together. I also want to continue to strive to be a better person through my college years whether it's improving my grades or taking on new academic and social obligations. When I saw that one of Sigma Kappa's values was personal growth I knew it had to be my new home.
