“Creating Community through People, Parks and Programs” A few years ago we took a trip to the Caribbean jungles of Costa Rica to thaw out and enjoy the tropical wildlife. Driving conditions were horrid and after leaving the city roads near the airport, we took to dirt paths pocked with deep craters as we rumbled towards the national park where we were staying. Our hopes were set high as we were wandering through a park in Costa Rica in anticipation of catching a band of howler monkeys swinging from vines or a gang of sloths hanging lazily from trees. We had visions only Disney could propagate and after spending a year of getting our boys ready for an excursion to the wild rainforests of Costa Rica, we soon realized their keen imaginations had perhaps raised their hopes to unrealistic levels. Our two boys weren’t going

As we rounded a corner in the trail and our kids were asking us whether an ensemble of Spanish speaking parrots would be waiting at the next trail intersection to tell us which direction to take, we spotted a family of four coming in our direction As this young couple with two kids in tow approached in quiet unison, a howler monkey suddenly darted from a hidden position on the edge of the trail and swiped a ham sandwich from the their three-year old boy. As the boy began to wail, the mother instinctually reached into her side satchel to pull out a bag of sandwiches and snacks that they had packed for their excursion. Without warning, another opportunistic monkey lunged from the brush and with the determination of a high school fullback, grabbed the bag and began running down the trail towards us, looking pleased with his gamesmanship as he raised the bag above his head in victorious fashion. The kids still talk about their experience in the forests that day and for Memorial weekend of 2010, we decided to take them to our own rainforests--the temperate rain-

forests of the Olympic Peninsula. As many of you might remember, Memorial weekend was filled with three days of rain and in the rainforests of the Olympic National Park, the rains were especially torrential. The kids were unfazed and couldn’t wait to get on the trails upon waking each morning. And although there weren’t monkeys stealing lunches on our weekend of hikes, we saw owls, raccoons, elk, eagles, deer, and other significant NW species. While out on the trails, it didn’t take long to realize most all of the other people were speaking languages from all over the world. While we travel great distances to see the parks on the other side of the globe, those on the other side travel great distances to see our parks. A classic example of the greener pastures syndrome. With all of the places of grandeur, we often forget about the parks we have right here in our own backyards. With a winter trip to Northern State Recreation area, elk can be heard bugling on the northern end of the park, while bunnies scurry for cover and hawks soar overhead. Memories develop when we leave the comforts of our screen filled homes and make excursions to see our parks and open spaces. We all have unique stories from days we have spent in the parks and natural areas of Skagit County. I often hear many of these stories when I see people in the stores, at the post office, or at a restaurant. What is your park story?
