OPENED IN 1962 In the late 1950’s, three women questioned the state of the hospital in Anacortes and asked “What does it take to build a new hospital?” That question sparked the establishment of Skagit County Public Hospital District No. 2 and the eventual building of Island Hospital, which opened in Oct. 1962. The spirit of community support continues and was on display in 2004 when local voters approved a $30.5 million bond to rebuild Island Hospital. In July 2008, the Island Hospital Renovation & Expansion Project was completed, resulting in a new hospital for west Skagit, north Island and San Juan counties. With 43 beds and more than 100 active physicians, Island Hospital has been recognized as one of the best small hospitals in the U.S. In fact, IH was awarded the 2005 100 Top Hospitals by Evanston, ILbased Solucient, a national healthcare-information corporation. Since 2002, Island has received seven awards for quality services, including recognition by Consumer Reports for excellent patient communication.
