Welcome to Sedro-Woolley, gateway city to the North Cascades and where timber meets tech.
Sedro-Woolley’s roots may lie in the logging industry, but we are a progressive city with success in the development of innovative and cutting-edge technology in the fields of aerospace, sustainable waste processing solutions, and production of sophisticated electronic products specifically designed for military, law, mining, and logging; all this while maintaining our small-town Americana feel.
Sedro-Woolley is a great place to live, and we continue to see new growth and development city-wide, with our population expanding from 11,000 to over 13,000 in just a few short years. Our downtown business district has welcomed new stores and restaurants, as well as a beautiful library, whose design celebrates our past and present history. We boast beautiful parks and there are several trails to explore at the SWIFT Center, Veterans Park, as well as the Cascade Trail that runs 24 miles from Sedro-Woolley to Concrete, all amid spacious farmlands and forestry.
We enjoy sharing our heritage with visitors through the multiple festivals we celebrate throughout the year. From Blast from the Past to the Loggerodeo™, Founders’ Day, and the Christmas Parade, which begins with a live tree lighting ceremony in the center of town, I think you’ll agree it’s nothing short of spectacular. Our community spirit is probably best experienced during Loggerodeo™; a multi-day celebration that provides something for everyone. Be sure to stay for the Grand Parade and climactic fireworks, which are always a hit and will have you planning your next 4th of July back here in Sedro-Woolley.
From spring to fall, families, friends, and class reunions gather to enjoy BBQs, music festivals and other celebrations in one of our scenic parks. In addition, we have several playfields that host a robust community driven variety of youth sports. Whether it be little league, softball, pee-wee football, or soccer teams, our spring and summer afternoons resound with much cheer in our recreational fields.
There is much to be proud of and celebrate here in Sedro-Woolley and we welcome all to join us for a memorable visit.
I am honored to have this opportunity to serve as Sedro-Woolley’s Mayor and I hope to see you around town.
Julia M. Johnson Mayor of Sedro-Woolley

Nestled in the heart of Skagit County, Sedro-Woolley seamlessly blends its rich historical roots with a forward-looking spirit. Known as the “Gateway to the North Cascades,” this vibrant city offers residents and visitors alike a unique mix of small-town charm and economic vitality.
The towns of Sedro and Woolley officially became one on December 19, 1898. Today, after more than 100 years as one community, that sense of unity and heritage lives on through the descendants of our founding families, our many historic buildings, and the beautiful wood carvings that line our streets. Sedro-Woolley proudly holds the title of Chainsaw Carving Capital of Washington State and the Pacific Northwest, and hosts the longest-running 4th of July celebration and parade in the state!
Sedro-Woolley is perfectly positioned between the majestic Cascade Loop to the east and the world-famous San Juan Islands to the west. Every year, the North Cascades National Park and recreation area attracts over 750,000 visitors. Our
town is right off Highway 20—just minutes from Interstate 5 and ideally located between Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, B.C. The Cascade Loop itself spans more than 400 miles and is designated a National Scenic Byway.
For many, Sedro-Woolley’s biggest draw is its access to the outdoors—parks, rivers, mountain trails, skiing, fishing,
and the nearby islands are all within reach. Families are also drawn here for our highly-rated Sedro-Woolley School District, known for building strong publicprivate partnerships that benefit students and the local economy.
Despite our growing population, SedroWoolley has maintained its small-town charm and strong community spirit. Locals

and visitors alike come together for favorite events like Loggerodeo™, Blast from the Past, and the Lighted Christmas Parade, all set in or near our revitalized downtown. As the city continues its evolution from timber town to tech hub, we’re seeing a fresh energy infuse our historic core.
Whether you’re visiting or looking to put down roots, Sedro-Woolley is a place where tradition and progress walk side by side. It’s not just a great place to visit—it’s a great place to call home.
The 84-acre Upper Skagit Reservation, which sits east of Sedro-Woolley, is home to a tribe with 504 enrolled members; descendants of a tribe that once inhabited 10 villages on the Upper Skagit and Sauk Rivers. The Skagit Tribe opened its popular $28 million Skagit Valley Casino Resort on a 15-acre site off of the Bow Exit on Interstate-5 in 1995. The $11 million, 103 – room hotel and conference center was opened in 2001. The tribe also owns The Skagit Bow Hill Gas & Food Mart.

Tourists come to see the beautiful wood carvings and murals spread through the downtown area of the city, mostly along Metcalf Street. The carvings come from the annual chainsaw carving competition - part of the Loggerodeo™ festivities. Many of the painted murals were inspired by world-famous photographer Darius Kinsey, who had a photo-studio in SedroWoolley in the late 1890s. He was known for his emphasis on Western scenery, logging, and railroads.
Sedro-Woolley’s 2025 population is estimated at 13,256, making it the 104th largest city in Washington State. SedroSedro-Woolley is currently growing at a rate of 1.21% annually. The median household income stands at $72,140. The median age in Sedro-Woolley is 35.1 years; 34.2 years for males, and 36.1 years for females. The two largest ethnic groups in Sedro-Woolley are White (Non-Hispanic) and Hispanic.
Sedro-Woolley home prices were up by 5.4% over last year, with single-family homes selling for a median price of

$495,312 in February, 2025.
Sedro-Woolley is served by the Skagit Regional Airport in Burlington (owned and operated by the Port of Skagit, it offers corporate, business, and recreational flying services), the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific freight rail lines, Amtrak passenger rail service, and a regional transit system. The city is also a one-hour drive to the Paine Field Airport in Everett, a half hour drive to the Bellingham International Airport, and a one-and-a-half-hour drive to the Sea-Tac International Airport. With city growth expected to occur mostly north of SR20, the Jones/John Liner Trail Road Corridor projects will provide an important east-west corridor for relieving traffic congestion on SR20. The projects will also provide pedestrian and non-motorized facilities to enhance connections between neighborhoods.

Nestled in the picturesque Skagit Valley, just a scenic 60-mile drive north of Seattle along Interstate 5, lies the Sedro-Woolley School District—a beacon of educational opportunity serving not just Sedro-Woolley, but also the vibrant communities of Big Lake, Clear Lake, Lyman, Hamilton, and Samish.
With a student population of approximately 4,385, the Sedro-Woolley School District is a tapestry of innovation and collaboration. Its educational landscape encompasses a range of offerings, including a special education preschool, seven K-6 elementary schools, a middle school, and two high schools—one traditional and one alternative—each designed to cater to the unique needs and aspirations of every learner. The schools are united in their dedication to student success.
Good Beginnings Preschool offers tailored support for children with developmental delays, including those who are medically fragile. With certified special education teachers and dedicated paraeducators, the program focuses on fostering essential skills like communication, problem-solving, and adaptability. Every child receives individualized attention. Transportation services ensure safe access to and from school, making Good Beginnings Preschool a nurturing environment for every young learner.
The Foundations K Program is designed for students turning five between September 1 and August 31, who show need in academics, emotional/social development, fine and gross motor skills, and language development. The program, located at Big Lake, Central, Lyman, and Mary Purcell elementary schools, aims to provide tailored support to ensure a successful transition to kindergarten. Parents or guardians interested in enrolling their child are encouraged to complete the application process promptly for the early October start date. Visit https://www. swsd.k12.wa.us/page/foundations-k.
At the heart of the district are the seven K–6 elementary schools.
• Big Lake is known for fostering close partnerships with families to support student success.
• Central has a special emphasis on project-based learning and is home to the district’s Highly Capable Program. Student engagement is a priority. Central also has the district’s elementary self-contained behavior (EBD) program as well as the newest Foundations K classroom.
• Step into the classrooms of Clear Lake, where the VISIONS Program offers an exceptional educational journey supported by parental involvement and

community backing.
• Lyman is known as a great school in a great community that provides a safe and productive learning environment for all students to take risks and grow every day. Every student is a valued, capable, and unique member of the learning community.
• Mary Purcell is known for its thriving parent group actively supporting students’ academic and socialemotional needs.
• Samish is a small community school dedicated to fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment in every child.
• Venture to Evergreen where STEM education ignites a passion for discovery and innovation in every student.
As students transition to Cascade Middle School, they embark on a journey of growth and exploration. At CMS, high levels of learning and collaboration lay the groundwork for success, preparing students for the next chapter of their educational journey.
Sedro-Woolley High School takes pride in a rich tradition of excellence. The school’s comprehensive program extends far beyond the classroom, encompassing academic courses, career and technical education, athletic programs, and a plethora of co-curricular activities. Whether students aspire to pursue higher education, enter the workforce, or blaze their own trail, the school’s mission is clear: to prepare them for success in life beyond the school gates.
With a commitment to student success, SWHS offers a diverse array of class options spanning all subject areas. From Advanced Placement (AP) courses to College in the High School (CiHS) classes, in partnership with Skagit Valley College and Central Washington University, SWHS provides students with the tools they need to thrive in an ever-evolving world.
The CiHS program allows students in grades 9-12 to seamlessly integrate college coursework into their high school experience, all at a minimal cost. With opportunities to earn college credits while still in high school, students can leap confidently into their future endeavors, equipped with both knowledge and experience.
As an alternative to SWHS, State Street High School’s core program places an emphasis on preparing students with the skills needed to earn and pass the state mandatory testing and earn a high school diploma. SSHS combines small class size with a very caring environment to support students both academically and in personal growth. State Street’s Home-Centered Program is designed for students who work best independently. To be successful, students must be competent in basic skills, especially reading and math. Students work at home for 24 hours a week. Log sheets that document the hours worked must be turned in each week and students must complete a minimum of one credit every six weeks.
Whether you’re considering a move to the area or simply seeking educational excellence for your child, the Sedro-Woolley School District invites you to embark on a journey of discovery and growth. From its scenic surroundings to its unwavering commitment to student success, they’re more than just a school district — they’re a community dedicated to empowering futures

and shaping destinies. Come, be a part of something extraordinary. Families who live outside of the district’s boundaries can submit a “Choice Transfer” request to attend SWSD schools. Find more information at https://www.swsd.k12.wa.us/domain/904.

The Sedro-Woolley Museum has been a special part of the Sedro-Woolley community for more than 30 years. The museum celebrates the city’s evolution from its frontier origins to the present day, making it a beloved resource for both SedroWoolley locals and visitors from around the country and the world. JoEllen Kesti was elected as museum board president and executive director in November, 2022. She, alongside equally passionate board members and volunteers, aim to keep the museum alive for many generations to come.
The museum volunteers work to refresh and add new exhibits every year to keep things interesting. This year, the team is working on the expansion of the Skagit Steel exhibit. “We’ve moved the Skagit Steel exhibit from the back of the museum to
the front, and we’re working on a complete overhaul to better showcase its major contributions to our community. We’re currently working with Don Wudtke, a retired Skagit engineer and holder of multiple patents, to help bring the exhibit to life,” shared Kesti.
Museum volunteers continue to build on last year’s exterior remodel. The museum’s exterior was updated and repainted, and the outdoor artifacts were organized and relocated to the south side of the building for easier viewing. “Thanks to a generous donation from Sedro-Woolley Rotary, our outdoor snubber will be repainted, and new signage will be installed to help visitors learn more about the artifacts on display. In addition, through the generosity of Dan Sims, we’ve been able to purchase and
preserve the vintage Herb’s Chevron gas pumps in memory of his father, Vern Sims,” Kesti said.
The museum entrance features Carnegie light pillars, memorabilia from the old library, and exhibits including a photography collection by Darius Kinsey and Frank LaRoche. Kesti invites visitors to explore the interactive Main Street with a vintage post office and old-fashioned newspaper office, step inside the jail for a mugshot, belly up to the bar in the saloon, and head in to “make a deposit” at the bank. Discover the history of logging, railroads, military service, and local industry, including the upcoming new Skagit Steel gallery. Guests can also learn about the Upper Skagit Tribe’s heritage, the founding fathers and early pioneers who laid the
foundation for Sedro-Woolley, and enjoy the expanded Northern State Hospital exhibit.
“Our dedicated volunteers are working diligently to digitize our research library collection, ensuring it is preserved for future generations and easily accessible for those conducting research. As a result of this work, we are making it easier for the public to access archival materials, including photographs, maps, newspapers, and more,” said Kesti. This will help researchers and families uncover answers about the area’s history and past community members.
The museum’s gift shop offers unique, history-inspired items that let visitors take a piece of Woolley heritage home with them. Purchasing from the shop also helps support the board’s efforts to preserve and share Sedro-Woolley history.
The museum sponsors many special events that offer a variety of experiences for the community to enjoy. Check the museum’s website, or follow its Facebook or Instagram pages for upcoming monthly events.
